I used to think giant gaming laptops were stupid but after living with one for the past year I have completely changed my tune. It’s fantastic to have a portable gaming desktop with serious performance. While at home, I keep the computer docked and use it as a desktop with a desktop monitor but then it can fold into a bag and travel with me. If you can afford something like this, you won’t be disappointed. It will, in fact, be hard to go back to a regular desktop.
Glad to see another convert. I hear all the time "why don't you just build a desktop" and whilst that's great if you are always in the same location to use it, I am all over the place so its amazing to be able to set up in 1 minute and do all my work or gaming wherever :)
Yeah, but the game has changed quite a lot the last 3 years. It just now recently you can get decent performance from a laptop without serious heat issues. I think gaming laptops started to get usable with the mobile geforce 3060. But now with the 4090 they have taken yet another step.

Yeah me too, this is my first mercury Razer Blade after countless black, and it has to be mercury from now on where possible. The only problem is I am not having to buy all mercury peripherals 🤣

So Razer states that the max RAM capacity on the Blade 18 is 64GB. Is there any long term concern or potential problems from installing more than their stated limit? 96GB would be more than enough future proofing for the heavy 3D simulations and 8K video editing that I do...
@MashITTech Thank you for posting this! The 96GB Crucial kit performed extremely well. I currently have the Fury 64GB sticks but the results show there is only very minor differences in speed thankfully, for me having another 32GB of bandwidth would be worth while for task extensive projects like my Pro Tools sessions with tons of plugins running at once.
you can also run your Laptop with open bottom on 4 pedestals, for testing and installing stuff. I used 4 SSD boxes on the corners to hold it up while leaving the bottom case off.
Whilst I totally agree with you and often do something similar when trouble shooting it’s not something I would recommend people less experienced do 😀👍
Keeping the case off can be beneficial however it can also make the laptop warmer because there is no draft or airflow it's the difference between keeping two windows open in your house so there is a draft going through your house then walking into your front yard and not feeling a breeze.

Thank you. Happy 1 month with 4090 I found the M.2 to be one drive 2tb. I have used it for my PS5 and upgraded to 2x 4 t.b.. The build is very nice and Form factor is best. Hard to justify the price to everyone but worth it for me.

@MashITTech I was messing around with this yesterday in XTU, first time. I noticed I could get it down from 100C by lowering the p core multiplier and an offset voltage of .09 to .1 but I'm not 100% on what I need to be tracking/ how. Tried opening Cinebench and it wouldn't load or it at least wouldn't be able to complete itself whenever it was loaded. I've been lucky in the past with PCs and Laptops. This problem is going to force me to learn alot. And thanks for replying! I'll tinker with it this morning and see what goes on

I am concerned about the fan noise and heat, especially when rendering for long hours, how is your comment on this? Thanks for the great review !
It certainly is a desktop replacement. The fan can get loud if you put it in the maxed out settings but if you run it on balanced it is not bad at all and the temps are well within check. I have been hammering mine for months with no issues. I also undervolt the CPU which means you get more performance per clock too.
Hey Mashit this was just a cool thought but would you be able to take out the battery in the blade 18 and put it in your blade 16 possibly as you own both would the battery from the blade 18 fit into the blade 16 and if so would it improve thermals from the blade 16 as it has a fan built into the blade 18 battery would love to know! Love your content and in depth reviews of these awesome laptops.
Thanks mate. Let me take a look but I don't think they are the same size and have connectors in different places plus you would need to have a fan header for the battery fan. I will let you know what I find out when I am in the office later
Also haven’t watched all of your video yet but as you previously said the Crucial Ram bundle 2 x 48gb kit is nice to get 96gb in your high end laptop with fast speeds and I’m assuming you put a Samsung 990 Pro 4TB SSD single sided SSD’s for that lovely 8TB of SSD storage in your high end personal laptop.
yes, I am a really heavy ram user so 96gb is amazing for me until they release 2x 64gb stick 🤣 and yes, I used the 990 pro 4tb as my main drive and the lexar 4tb nm790 as my secondary as its cheap with great performance and I use my secondary drive only for games
Have you already tested the temperatures of the crucial and fury ddr5 memories? I have 64GB crucial 5200 that reach 75º C in tests; too hot!. It should come with a heatsink. Could you test?
although the blade 16 is more portable, I still prefer the blade 18 which actually feels to me like a 17" laptop as its pretty compact. The blade 18 fits in my 17" backpacks and I love that larger 18" panel for work and play. I will compare the 2 laptops together soon

Got a razer blade 16 and upgraded the ram with the same Kingston kit you used (64gb ddr5 hyperx 5600). They worked at 5600mhz until razer released bios updates 😒 it won't detect the memory any higher than 5200. Has anyone got any luck doing it?
Oh damn! I haven't updated my BIOS on the 16, mine is still running at 5600! In all fairness, I wouldn't worry too much, you loose 400mhz but gain tighter CAS timings so probably very little real world difference. I will message razer though in the hope they can bring it back in a future BIOS
can the 13950hx models be upgraded in Ram? At razer website it says they max out at 32 gb. Is it how they sell it, or does it mean the case has 1 ram slot?
Hello and thanks for the video. Q1: I've got 2 TB ssd and 32 GB preinstalled in my Razerblade 18. Since the device has 2 slots would it be ok just to add the 4TB pro and be done (no need to clone etc?). Or should I make the primary the pro drive and use the current as backup? does it matter? Q2: Also, is it possible to simply add another 32 GB stick to get 64 GB ram. Does it have to match or can it be different. If I need to match, do i have to take it out to know which model of ram or is there another way. Thank you so much!
With regards to the ram you will have 2x16gb sticks so you will need to swap that for 2x32gb. You can probably sell the old ram though to make some back. With regards to the 2tb, if it’s a single drive then yes just put the 4tb in the second bay, no need for cloning unless you want to also increase the capacity of the primary drive. Razer use decent quality drives so speed will be similar anyway

Can you run the boot drive from the secondary SSD slot on the Razer laptop's? I have a blade 15 (2022) and watched your video on upgrading the ram and SSD on that but have bought upgraded double sided sn850x which will only fit in the top slot with a single sided SSD card for the bottom slot
I have a question. I bought the 2tb version and since it comes with 2 x 1TB can i unplug the 1TB secondary drive and slot in like a 4TB drive without having to back it up or does it come out of the factory with data on that second SSD?

My wedding ring is quite snug to my finger and it has never scratched or marked the blade. If you are concerned about scratches you could buy a skin. I added a skin to my blade 14 and blade 16 and they look excellent. There is a video on the blade 14 skin on the channel if you are interested 👍 also if you are binging blade 18 videos I also did a video on tweaking the blade 16 which also applies to the blade 18 as Trent are essentially the same 😀
How many win10 vms can a laptop such as this run in parallel ? Since it will have a 64 or 92 gb of Ram i guess nearly 8 to 10 since it will be bottlenecked by the cpu.
Fortunately the CPU has 24 cores and 32 threads so I reckon you could get away with 12 at a max if each VM was for light use, personally I never really run more than about 4 at a time (depending what I am testing).
I clicked your link for the Kinston memory on Amazon, I found it was not being sold directly by Kingston but by a third party seller for about about 100$ off the price from the Kingston site. Just wanted to double check if the seller was legit?
that is often the case. you are covered by Amazon so if for any reason the seller isn't legit you can just return it but I buy from third party sellers a lot of the time

Savin Tip: Get the 4090 but with the lowest spec possible and upgrade to what you want after buy. You don't want the RAM they ship with it anyways, they are quite subpar compared to the rest of the machine. The high spec's ones are also over prised compared to the low spec versions.

I do multi stream 4k 10bit editing from our Sony Cams with no issue, multi cam is fluid and export times are great. This is in davinci resolve studio BTW. I think it would perform about on par with a m2 max in editing as the Macs are pretty much designed for photo and video editing but no so great for other tasks
I have a Razer Blade 18 (32GB model). I want to upgrade the RAM to 64 GB. I clicked your Amazon link and bought the 'Kingston 64GB Fury 5600mhz RAM'. After I changed the stock RAM to 'Kingston 64GB Fury 5600mhz RAM', my Razer Blade 18 showed a black screen. I can still see the blinking of the green light on down bottom right but it keeps showing a black screen. I was so scared and stressed. I returned to stock 32 GB and it still shows a black screen. I pressed and held the power button for 10 seconds and the screen finally showed a white Razer botting logo. I wanted to try one more time so I changed my stock 32 GB RAM to 'Kingston 64GB Fury 5600mhz RAM' and pressed and held the power button for 15 seconds. It still shows the same problem. This is definitely a problem of 'The Kingston 64GB Fury 5600mhz RAM'. I want to say that 'Kingston 64GB Fury 5600mhz RAM' shows a problem in Razer Blade 18. Is there anyone who has the same problem as me? Now, I am thinking of buying a 'Crucial 96GB RAM kit'. Should I buy 64GB or 96GB? Is 96GB faster than 64GB? Razer Blade can only support RAM up to 64 GB. However, if 96GB is faster than 64GB, I want to purchase a 'Crucial 96GB RAM kit'. Is 96GB faster than 64GB?
that's really odd! it should work, maybe your kit is faulty, I have used Fury ram in blade 16 and blade 18 with no issues. The crucial 64gb and 96gb is the same speed so get the 64gb unless you need the extra capacity.
I recently bought the mercury 4090 Blade 18 for testing basic Machine Learning (ML) models (advanced models for a laptop but basic for the $250k university system). I installed Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) (the Ubuntu distro) and also play some games. Got the choma v2 stand as well. should point out that the 13980hx is not an enterprise chip according to intel but the 13950hx is. This means it has the reliability and features needed for enterprise development. Then I saw this video. $700+ later I got the SSDs and RAM. one major difference is that I got two Samsung 990 pro rather than one sammy and one non-sammy because I wanted top reliability for ML and the occasional video edit. Yesterday I took off the back and installed the two 4TB SSDs and two 32GB RAM. I expected it to take a while on first boot and 5 min later I got a blue screen saying something was wrong and it's tried to boot multiple times. It asked (on the Blue DOS-like screen) if I want to boot in safe mode, go to recovery options and 2 other things. I chose recovery. I was worried because I just finished installing all of the machine learning stuff and configured it with WSL and now I potentially had to do a recovery and lose everything. None of the recovery options are what I wanted so I canceled and rebooted again. This time it rebooted fine. Ever since then it is rebooted fine actually and it actually boots fast now. One thing to note about Samsung magic migration is it doesn't clone the OEM recovery partition so if you want that OEM recovery option you have to create a recovery thumb drive before cloning so if you ever want to go back to the factory setting you have a recovery to that. That wasn't mentioned in the video and it's not a big deal it's just something to note. Great video @MashITTech !
My computer went through this same process you described. when I rebooted for the first time after installing the ram & SSDs it was a black screen with a blinking green light. (keyboard Backlight also turned on but not my setting ) for about 5 or 6 minutes before prompting me that it couldn't go any further what I would do is try and Boot and just let it sit there go get a coffee watch a TV show just let it time out and when it comes out go to the recovery. If that doesn't work something might be faulty and you might need to do a traditional, real recovery

have you undervolted your 16 yet? that makes a massive difference to temps

Got a razer blade 16 and upgraded the ram with the same Kingston kit you used (64gb ddr5 hyperx 5600). They worked at 5600mhz until razer released bios updates 😒 it won't detect the memory any higher than 5200. Has anyone got any luck doing it?
Oh damn! I haven't updated my BIOS on the 16, mine is still running at 5600! In all fairness, I wouldn't worry too much, you loose 400mhz but gain tighter CAS timings so probably very little real world difference. I will message razer though in the hope they can bring it back in a future BIOS

can the 13950hx models be upgraded in Ram? At razer website it says they max out at 32 gb. Is it how they sell it, or does it mean the case has 1 ram slot?

Q1: I've got 2 TB ssd and 32 GB preinstalled in my Razerblade 18. Since the device has 2 slots would it be ok just to add the 4TB pro and be done (no need to clone etc?). Or should I make the primary the pro drive and use the current as backup? does it matter?
Q2: Also, is it possible to simply add another 32 GB stick to get 64 GB ram. Does it have to match or can it be different. If I need to match, do i have to take it out to know which model of ram or is there another way. Thank you so much!
With regards to the ram you will have 2x16gb sticks so you will need to swap that for 2x32gb. You can probably sell the old ram though to make some back. With regards to the 2tb, if it’s a single drive then yes just put the 4tb in the second bay, no need for cloning unless you want to also increase the capacity of the primary drive. Razer use decent quality drives so speed will be similar anyway

Can you run the boot drive from the secondary SSD slot on the Razer laptop's? I have a blade 15 (2022) and watched your video on upgrading the ram and SSD on that but have bought upgraded double sided sn850x which will only fit in the top slot with a single sided SSD card for the bottom slot
I am pretty positive that will work fine, I didn’t test it on the 22 version but it worked on my old 21 model

I have a question. I bought the 2tb version and since it comes with 2 x 1TB can i unplug the 1TB secondary drive and slot in like a 4TB drive without having to back it up or does it come out of the factory with data on that second SSD?
unless it is setup in RAID (I haven't bought a 2x1tb to be able to confirm) you can just swap the 1tb for a 4tb
Binging on these Blade 18 videos. Off topic question ... do you find thar your ring scratches the laptop? Wondering if I am going to have to wear gloves to handle this beauty or handle it ringless 😂.
My wedding ring is quite snug to my finger and it has never scratched or marked the blade. If you are concerned about scratches you could buy a skin. I added a skin to my blade 14 and blade 16 and they look excellent. There is a video on the blade 14 skin on the channel if you are interested 👍 also if you are binging blade 18 videos I also did a video on tweaking the blade 16 which also applies to the blade 18 as Trent are essentially the same 😀
How many win10 vms can a laptop such as this run in parallel ? Since it will have a 64 or 92 gb of Ram i guess nearly 8 to 10 since it will be bottlenecked by the cpu.
Fortunately the CPU has 24 cores and 32 threads so I reckon you could get away with 12 at a max if each VM was for light use, personally I never really run more than about 4 at a time (depending what I am testing).

The difference is so minimal outside of benchmarks you won't see a difference, the SN850x is very very slightly faster

that is often the case. you are covered by Amazon so if for any reason the seller isn't legit you can just return it but I buy from third party sellers a lot of the time

Hey mate, also got your email. Will reply here for the sake of anyone else interested. Yes you certainly could (I would love to but 8tb drives are so expensive in the UK currently) both slots fit a double sided SSD which all 8tb drives are.

That's odd! Did you try the port at both sides of the computer? is the sabrent and Samsung showing up in device manager?

can you check device manager and see if 990 pro shows there? it won't show in my computer until it is initialised

In theory yes, they should be fine. I haven’t personally tested them though. No heatsink necessary as the heat pads are on the base

Savin Tip: Get the 4090 but with the lowest spec possible and upgrade to what you want after buy. You don't want the RAM they ship with it anyways, they are quite subpar compared to the rest of the machine. The high spec's ones are also over prised compared to the low spec versions.

I do multi stream 4k 10bit editing from our Sony Cams with no issue, multi cam is fluid and export times are great. This is in davinci resolve studio BTW. I think it would perform about on par with a m2 max in editing as the Macs are pretty much designed for photo and video editing but no so great for other tasks

I have a Razer Blade 18 (32GB model). I want to upgrade the RAM to 64 GB. I clicked your Amazon link and bought the 'Kingston 64GB Fury 5600mhz RAM'. After I changed the stock RAM to 'Kingston 64GB Fury 5600mhz RAM', my Razer Blade 18 showed a black screen. I can still see the blinking of the green light on down bottom right but it keeps showing a black screen. I was so scared and stressed. I returned to stock 32 GB and it still shows a black screen. I pressed and held the power button for 10 seconds and the screen finally showed a white Razer botting logo. I wanted to try one more time so I changed my stock 32 GB RAM to 'Kingston 64GB Fury 5600mhz RAM' and pressed and held the power button for 15 seconds. It still shows the same problem. This is definitely a problem of 'The Kingston 64GB Fury 5600mhz RAM'. I want to say that 'Kingston 64GB Fury 5600mhz RAM' shows a problem in Razer Blade 18. Is there anyone who has the same problem as me?

that's really odd! it should work, maybe your kit is faulty, I have used Fury ram in blade 16 and blade 18 with no issues. The crucial 64gb and 96gb is the same speed so get the 64gb unless you need the extra capacity.
I recently bought the mercury 4090 Blade 18 for testing basic Machine Learning (ML) models (advanced models for a laptop but basic for the $250k university system). I installed Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) (the Ubuntu distro) and also play some games. Got the choma v2 stand as well.
should point out that the 13980hx is not an enterprise chip according to intel but the 13950hx is. This means it has the reliability and features needed for enterprise development.
Then I saw this video. $700+ later I got the SSDs and RAM. one major difference is that I got two Samsung 990 pro rather than one sammy and one non-sammy because I wanted top reliability for ML and the occasional video edit.
Yesterday I took off the back and installed the two 4TB SSDs and two 32GB RAM. I expected it to take a while on first boot and 5 min later I got a blue screen saying something was wrong and it's tried to boot multiple times. It asked (on the Blue DOS-like screen) if I want to boot in safe mode, go to recovery options and 2 other things. I chose recovery. I was worried because I just finished installing all of the machine learning stuff and configured it with WSL and now I potentially had to do a recovery and lose everything. None of the recovery options are what I wanted so I canceled and rebooted again. This time it rebooted fine. Ever since then it is rebooted fine actually and it actually boots fast now.
One thing to note about Samsung magic migration is it doesn't clone the OEM recovery partition so if you want that OEM recovery option you have to create a recovery thumb drive before cloning so if you ever want to go back to the factory setting you have a recovery to that. That wasn't mentioned in the video and it's not a big deal it's just something to note.

My computer went through this same process you described. when I rebooted for the first time after installing the ram & SSDs it was a black screen with a blinking green light. (keyboard Backlight also turned on but not my setting ) for about 5 or 6 minutes before prompting me that it couldn't go any further what I would do is try and Boot and just let it sit there go get a coffee watch a TV show just let it time out and when it comes out go to the recovery. If that doesn't work something might be faulty and you might need to do a traditional, real recovery
