As a teenager in the late '80s and early '90s, three-quarter and one-ton trucks came with gas engines putting out 190-230 HP and didn't even crack the 400 ft.-lbs. mark. People somehow towed heavy stuff back then (slowly) so we're in good shape these days.

...and if you did get a diesel engine they were simple and reliable. By no means quick, the non-turbo 7.3L Navistars actually did a reasonable job of moving around those old trucks and vans.

That’s what I tell people my dad use to pull a big ass old camper that that is much heavier than any new one with a 90s ford and 94 Dodge Ram and he never complained not sure what the HP was on those trucks I’m sure not 300 most likely 240 but he pulled it from GA to Alabama until he bought a lot on lake wise and pulled it up Carter’s mtn if any Ga boys know carters mtn it’s steep it’s a hard mtn to to pull something I use to have a Dakota and pulled a stratus bass boat up that mtn and it would only go 20 mph never heard my dad complain like I did when pulled a 2thousand pound boat up that one not saying it would do it every day with issues but my dad did it back then with much less of a truck

Great review. I've ran the 6.2 in a dually for 300k and only done one tune up at 279k. My new F250 I wanted the same engine. I have the xlt fx4 and live it. 10 mpg towing anything and on fairly flat road I get 18. And up around 60mph. 17 at 70. This is the last truck I will own as I'm too old to wear it out.

Hey, I’m looking to factory order and F-350 Dually with 4.30 gear and a 6.2 L engine for my landscaping business. Since you had a Dually with the 6.2, how was the gas mileage? Was it able to handle towing moderately heavy loads? Would you purchase a Dually with the 6.2 engine again?
If you could answer these questions it would be greatly appreciated.

I really appreciate your videos man, keep them coming. I was looking for just this kind of video. Recently identified that my Travel trailer (33ft)was just too much for my 17 F150, fell for the marketing scheme thinking my truck shouldn’t have issues towing at least 10K but in reality it only has 12800 GCWR… meaning I’ve got a bit over 7K towing capacity which is difficult to achieve with any additional gear/passengers without exceeding truck payload. I’ve been eyeing HD’s. Not really interested in the expenses and complexity of a diesel considering I don’t tow regularly. I like the 7.3 gas but it seems to have some growing pains with camshaft delaminating issues and they’re hard to find at a good price. The 6.2 is an old work horse that’s proven reliable. So its on my list but i like the capability of the 6.4 hemi. Keep up the good work.

6.2 checked all our boxes. My TT isn't all that heavy, but the tongue weight was enough to make driving with a decade old 1/2 ton an iffy proposition with four of us in the truck. I took a look at the new F-150s and while you have 500+ lb more payload capacity I decided I didn't want to have to worry about it. 7.3l would have been nice but it's extra $. We did opt for the 4.30 rear end. Diesel was a hard no. Looking forward to the truck arriving - ordered late September.

Good review. We love our 6.2 gas F250. Your tires were at 60 psi when you started, not 80, and your car/trailer balance is possibly impacting sway. Run it across a scale to see where the fulcrum is for axles. I have the 2018 version of this truck in XL trim. It pulls our 9K TT with equalizer hitch and sway control beautifully. Plenty of juice for the hills and avg. 9.6 mpg while towing all day.

Thanks for the review. I am now considering the f250 6.2 for my next purchase because of this review and comments from other owners. I'd like a slight upgrade for my Ram 1500 5.7 for towing my 5-6000lb 16' cargo trailer. Don't need or want anything to do with a diesel (had one). Reliability is high on my list so I think I'd rather have a little less power than the 7.3 and a little more peace of mind.

I'm running Michelin Defenders 275/70R18 on my 2017 6.2L F350. They're one of the better tires for towing...so I've been told by folks at the campgrounds when they see them. This video is GREAT. I'm towing 63-6500lbs and following behind my brother in his 2013 diesel F350 with his 10k pound 5th wheel and he's cruising up 6%+ grades while I drop back to 35mph because the tach was hanging out at 5300. I'll bump to to the 7.3 and be annoyed I don't drive the 8.1 they'll be selling by then. 🙂

Thing was great.

I have a 2020 with the same drive train,no issues so far at 80k miles. That made me nervous when you slammed it into park after having a gmc shifter come apart, they use a cheap plastic clip on the transmission to select gears 🫣 I did learn not to use to much armor all on those steps. After detailing my f250 I about slid off the steps and busted my ass😂 I would definitely put the audi a couple feet up further in the trailer putting more weight on the truck,it will clean up the sway considerably

I just traded in my Chevy 3 days ago for the 2020 F250 6.2L....I am willing to give up my 5.3 for a 6.2 any day.....Im just doing light towing with my classic cars to car shows and and dump runs. Plus I missed the space it gives me over feeling cramped in the Chevy. This suits me just fine with the 6th speed and when I had my F350 2 years ago when I was towing, the 10 speed was very "clunky" for my taste! Back in 2011 when I met my (now) wife, she had a 2008 F250 XLT with the 6.2. I don't remember what the rear end ratio was. I loved that truck, and it pretty much converted me from GM to Ford. Back in February of 2022, our factory-ordered F350 Lariat with the 7.3 and 4.30 rear arrived and man... We just upgraded our travel trailer to a 33ft rig that weighs about 8500 gross. Aside from some wind sway, you really don't feel the thing back there in terms of take off and braking. We ordered it with the "camper package" which includes a rear stabilizer bar, as well as upgraded front springs. Although I think that is more for 5th wheel hookup, that rear stabilizer bar seems to sure help with the sway.
We ordered that 2022 in the same color as her old 2008 F250, and I always wonder where that truck ended up after we sold it to help pay for our wedding back in 2014. It absolutely broke my heart at the time, but now I'm a lucky guy for being able to drive around the 2022 F350. It is funny how things come around.

I bought one of these used during Covid. Basic model, white no thrills. I have had it for two years now and when I bought it there was 24000 miles on it and now it has 65000.. i use it for my business and I have two job trailers. I live in pa between two mountains so it has to climb hills no matter where I go really. I usually have to tow a track hoe which weights about 7500 lbs and of course construction materials. I am happy with the way it tows. The 6.2 liter is strong, the truck suspension is strong. The only thing I found like you have found in this video is it seems to have an issue in the lower gears where it gets stuck in third if your going down a hill. It will do this even when you are not towing anything. I usually slow down and let it catch up when it does this. My house is on the top of a hill so when I leave I am immediately going down a grade and the truck seems to get stuck in 2nd or 3rd the rpms go up but it won't shift. until I either step on gas or apply brakes. The only other problem is sometimes when I put it in reverse, the reverse will thud. Seems to thud into reverse instead of smoothly going into reverse. I don't know if that will come back to haunt me when the truck gets a little higher in miles. Guess I will find out. Nice video!!!!

Just haven’t figured which way to go the exhaust brake would be nice for all the mountains out west here. But cost and overhead on diesels are high I run my trucks into the ground so kind of between a rock and a hard place on the deciding factor in the future. I never buy new vehicles so guess we will see what the future markets hold. Trucks cost to much for them to be a depreciating asset, and for most people not garnering a profit.

This was good. I was towing 6000 lbs with a 2008 Yukon Denali with the 6.2 liter engine. Towed good but would overheat if ambient temperature was over 60 degrees. That was a pain and in the end it blew the engine. I’m driving a 22 super duty with the 7.3 engine and I absolutely love it.

Seems hard to find a bad review of the 7.3 which is why it will probably be in the next truck I buy. I'm a ram guy coming from a 2500 with a cummins so this is a major step for me. Hope I don't regret it because these rams have been very good to me but I'm looking to get away from diesel and ram doesn't make an engine with comparable displacement.

@@treeamigo8447 yeah its true. Nobody builds gas engines like that. Except Toyota oh and industrial strength diesels. The 7.3 is also the factory option in the 15 ton Class A motor buses. I dont recall seeing the 6.4 hemi or GMs 6.6 being up to the task in that application😁

As long as you have the right gear ratio and drive the speed limit, gas motors are great. It's guys you wanna tow uphill at 70 that complain about em. My experience is both diesel and gas are great as long as you service em and don't treat em like hot rods.

Regarding diesel, they’re tow beasts fir sure, but multiple short trips are hard on a diesel. Discounting max tow capabilities, a gas engine is better for frequent on off cycles.

Get yourself a weight distribution sway control hitch if you pull a lot. I'm going to attempt to pull a 20' enclosed car trailer with a 2020 Mustang GT in it with my 2011 Ford F150. If it's to much I have access to a 2010 f350 v10. I think the f150 can get it done tho. At least I hope haha

I have a 2019 XL with STX package. Most of its life has been spent towing a 12k 5er (50 k miles). Happy with the performance overall however a diesel with exhaust brake would be nice. Had a couple incidents of brakes overheating even after installing disc brakes on the 5er and gain set to 7.
