Always wonderful to listen to you and Michael Glassman solving garden issues. I have deer sleeping in my backyard, giant hawks perched on the tiny dogwood to watch the sparrows in the azalea, chipmunks in the front, back and side yards; squirrel nests nigh in the willow oak and pin oak trees, moles and voles (we do set out poison for them, I'm afraid) and rabbits who eat from the driveway -- not even running away when I drive up and park. We also have many other birds. I enjoy them all except for the moles, voles and squirrels. I do not have gophers; the neighbors have those. Remarkably the animals do little damage, but I inherited a mature garden, so I am just trying to add perennials and native pollinator plants, and get rid of poison ivy and reduce other invasive plants. Thanks again.
Hi Janey, since Monty is a golden it should be easy to train him to stay out of your flower beds as long as he understands "no" and "good dog". Walk him through the pathways multiple times and say "no" every time he strays into the beds, and then follow with "good dog" every time he goes back on the path. If he is laying on a plant use "no, off", followed by "good dog" when he gets off the plant. That is how I have trained all my goldens to stay out of my flower/food beds. 5 goldens to be specific over the past 30yrs.
I can identify with the war against those critters. It was a battle over the course of 12 yrs. I learned alot during that time. I lived in a rural wooded area. I put up a deer fence and learned deer would not jump if there was not a clear landing space. So plenty of trees and shrubs were planted in my garden. The bottom of the fence I reinforced with chicken wire for the rabbits. Also rebar to hold the chicken wire down in the ground. For vole issues, I surrounded my perennials at the root with a fine gauge wire basket. All of that worked.
To keep deer out of the yard would I have used in the past is a motion operated sprinkler . It doesn't necessarily have to spray the dear but with the motion sensor it'll pick up their movement and activate sprinkler and deer are very skittish so the noise of the splitter popping on and shooting water scares them out of the yard and over for a period of time they learned not to come back into the yard. It was an easy fix the homeowner was happy and so we're the plants that I planted. I believe the brand was orbit they have two different models one that sticks into the ground and another one that is on a tripod so you can move it around the yard. 6 years ago it was around $100 on Amazon. The sprinkler had tons of adjustments also so you can adjust it to fit your circumstances . I highly recommend!💦
Agree, I use Orbit Motion Activated (northwest Michigan ) and recommended to Christopher and Eric at Grow for Me Gardening. They, too, have used with success.
I had a dog that liked to run along the fence. She would destroy everything I planted. I finally decided to give her about a two foot area next to the fence so that she could run along it. Be sure you can get your mower through the path. I moved my border of the flower bed out two feet and still had the same amount of planting space. Everyone thought I left the space between the fence and bed so I could get to the back of the bed for weeding.
Our two goldens as pups loved to run up to our wrought iron fence and entice walkers by to pet them through the rails. They, of course, where trampling my flowers - dahlias actually - in the process. I simply put two, 3ft wide tile pathways to the fence specifically for them and that's what they use now. I agree, work with the dogs and everyone is happy, especially - in my case - the walkers by who love to engage with the now 4 year olds who will now toss their ball through the rails and wait for the humans to throw the ball back in.
I remember the day my mom was looking out at her Koi pond with the herring "statue" overhead; until she realized she didn't have a herring statue! hahahahaha
My brother put an electric fence around his vegetable garden. At only 3 feet tall, the deer could have easily jumped over but he took foil, wrapped it around the wire and put peanut butter on the foil. The deer lick the peanut butter, get a mild shock and won't cross the wire even when the power is turned off.
We have a problem with raccoons. They will dig up the whole plant, searching for worms. This is a big problem in my veggie garden because of the loose soil. I have found that enclosing the whole raised bed with bird netting supported by cucumber frames works best. Good luck....
Hi - Janey did do a tour! It's Michael Glassman's back yard. She toured it in a May 2023 video, title is 'Award-Winning Landscape Architect's Home Garden Tour' -check it out! 😄
@@teresaj6585Oh thanks! I did see that before. Didn't remember. I will go back and look at it again. It was really nice. And his Halloween decorations.
You two are so funny! I think with some solutions to a problem, you’ll need to alternate with another solution. Eventually the critters will adapt. Rats are very intelligent. The rats loved my husband’s shop. He tried so many “rat traps” and the rats eventually figured them. The best thing he accidentally tried was a 5 gallon bucket of water that was left over from cleaning. It was 1/2 full and it trapped about 5 rats!
Great info! Love Michael’s stories and energy. -if you can afford the wonderfully talented Michael get the deer fence!!! Have wire baskets put in place for plants roots. -on a tighter budget lay hardware fabric under raised beds. -when planting make hardware wire baskets to place in the hole -plants are expensive -critter deterring repellents are expensive…. And need to be reapplied when it rains or the lawn sprinkler washes it off. -4x4 cemented in the ground 8” high with hardware cloth would be pretty inexpensive. Painting it black makes it almost disappear 😀 -I deal with squirrels 🐿️ in containers. Now anything I pot up is surrounded by chicken wire. It’s a pain BUT they no longer tear my plants digging holes to store acorns and again to retrieve them later.
Thanks for the info! I have a terrible gopher, mole and vole problem. Tried many different ways to get rid of them and I have had some success with Volex and Gopher Hawks. But, just remember, they will come back...and when they do, stay on top of getting rid of them. I learned the hard way! They can become a huge problem very quickly. ❤M
Hi Janey and Michael 🍁 . Very cool video about these animals .I'm so happy that We don't have dear rabbits and squirrels in my area . Have a wonderful day . 🍁🌻🍁
I'm in the UK and my biggest critter problems are squirrels and other peoples cats! The squirrels dont eat my plants but do bury nuts, acorns, conkers etc which then grow into unwanted sapling trees which can be a nightmare to dig out even when they are small. They particularly like hiding them in my plant containers. The cats unfortunately leave nasty surprises in the soil. I try to think of it as free fertilizer but its not pleasant when you end up getting it all over yourself. I have a fence around my garden but its no deterrent for either as they just climb up it.
Putting up a fence worked for us to keep the deer out. Before we put in the fence the deer would lay in our yard like dogs. One was hanging out on our porch once.
Squirrels kept eating all of our bird food. What stopped them was threading a slinky over the pole that the birdfeeder hung from. It only took one time for the squirrel to jump up on the slinky for us to have no more squirrel problems.
100%! My area has had bad drought the last 4 years. They are in my yard several mornings a week when it's been a few weeks without rain. When we've had a decent rain, they don't visit often. Their grazing and water sources dry up without rain. My plants have water in the foliage, so I imagine they eat anything just to get hydration.
We had a squirrel come into the house via the toilet! My husband drove 2 hours to get the thing out of the bathroom. He drove back 2 hours. The next day the squirrel came into the house via the toilet again! My husband had to drive 2 hours again! So he put mesh on the vent pipe on the roof. No more squirrels since.
My beef is elks. They do an incredible damage to my ground cover every winter. They are so strong they push the fences down with seemingly no effort. I can accept the occasional nibble of the odd deer there is always one who didn’t read the list of deer proof plants, chopped a daffodil and spit it out.
Ugh! I'm in Texas, and the armadillos are driving me crazy. Ammonia-soaked rags work fairly well, but must be refreshed daily. Seriously considering calling in trappers.
Always love to see you and Michael together. Living in SE Fla, I am beginning to see iguanas in our garden eating my orchid blooms and many other plants. They are an invasive species and are very destructive. A pellet gun is very effective.
Hi Janey and Michael 😊 Another very informative video, It is always a pleasure to see Michael, and I love his stories 😊 Thank you for sharing. 😊 Luckily we don't have any critter pressure here except male dogs that sometimes like to do their business on or around plants. The Squirrels stay on the highlines or fence tops.. My story many years ago did not contain plants... We had Rabbit cages and the rats 🐀 🥴😡 would get in them (idk how) to eat the food.. my ex had I believe a 22 that he would sit outside at dusk and shoot the rats. Uggg... Another place we had mice getting in our enclosed porch to eat the wild bird food and Squirrel food so finally we put a metal trashcan with food in bottom, piles of mice 🤢 would jump in there and daughters boyfriend would fill 1/2 way with water, drown them then dump them. Yuck-o... I love most critters and would adapt well in those situations BUT, Rats, Mice, and Snakes... No thank you... Recently we had a garden snake here that freaked me out (I get it they are good, ) in the past I would grab a shovel and chop chop chop any kind, but, I left this one alone... My neighbor a few days later had a huge black Moccasin that evidently is living under her back porch steps... 🥺 I live in zone 9b Texas Gulf Coast. But, growing up in Arizona desert with all the diamond backs etc. My mom kept me in fear since I could walk when it comes to snakes or scorpions 🦂 I also have a fear of Alligators . JS I am sorry for such a long post that is not about plants. 😁
did not find any mention about battery ?? repels the mice/rats from a garage. Need that info and did not see it on more info. Thanks for you help in this matter.
I am not sure which I have - moles or voles. They killed the grass at the end of summer and the dirt is very squishy. Hard to describe it’s definitely not regular soil like before.
Interesting, however in oc so cal don't have any of those problems, I embrace feeding now 6 generations of ravens, the birds, Fluffy the squirrel who sits on my lap, comes in the house for peanuts and trained my little dog to not chase them. However you did'nt talk about ants, those I have, but Iguess just call an exterminator.
Our neighbors have cats that roam around and LOVE digging and pooping in my raised beds. I don’t have a solution, but I’m ready to re-home them myself! I’ve covered my beds with chicken wire and cut holes to plant things, but now I have old plants stuck and I can’t get new plant in without tearing it up. There was a small 3” area the chicken wire didn’t cover and it got dug up. We had to dig out the cat poop soil and replace it this spring because it was so bad. The cost of taking 6 huge plastic totes of cat poop to the dump, plus all the new soil we had to buy is making gardening too expensive to continue. I don’t have an extra spicket to run a motion sensor sprinkler. Please send ideas if you have any!!
I tried moth balls to stop the squirrels from digging in my flowerbed and cats from using my yard. IT WORKED! I just put the little mesh bag in a dish and set it in the bed because I didn’t want the mothball ingredients to leach into the soil. Easy, cheap fix❤️
When we moved into our house, our solar panels had tons of pigeons nesting under them. The patio was constantly covered with pigeon poop and it kept giving my dog eye infections. So, our solution was to build a cat ladder so our 2 cats could get up on the roof. Problem got solved very quickly.
This is so timely! Over the last month, I have been pulling everything out of my mom's overgrown garden. Last week, I replanted everything. Japanese maples, hydrangeas, butterfly bushes, and various other shrubs. This morning my parents got up and something has dug 5 of the trees and shrubs. These are large plants and the digging was substantial. I suggested a dog but they don't have stray dogs running thru the property. They live in the country, and they have coyotes and foxes. Would a coyote dig up plants and trees? We used Bio tone and I suspect that's what the critter was after. It only dig up the largest plants, which would have had more fertilizer than the smaller ones... They are going to replant them and put large tomato cages around the plants for awhile. But I'm wondering if anyone else has had coyotes or foxes dig up plants to get to Bio tone??
My dog just loves Biotone starter fertilizer and any organic fertilizers. Luckily, she is older and easier to manage. Our neighbors dog (who is welcome in our yard), jumped up on a Green Stalk planter and broke several plants because she smelled the organic fertilizer. It has to be stored out of reach of critters.
we have everything that loves biotone, foxes armadillo, opossum so i usually keep round pieces of screen about 2ft by 2ft with a hole cut in the middle put it down after i freahly plant something and then put bricks on that in a semi circle. i can see where they try to dig around it but never make it to the plant, oncw the biotonw breaks down u can remove the screening and use it again i usually leave it down for about 3 months just to be safe
I am unable to watch your videos on my t. V, they're still in Spanish. I went to the settings to change the language and I have every language to choose from, but english
Also for my domestic diggers, my dogs, i laid down chicken wire flat on the ground and my perennials grew up through the holes. The dogs could not dig thru that chicken wire.
You can keep deer from your plants by spraying. I have used Bobbex for years on my hostas, azaleas, hydrangeas etc with great success. There are other brands but I like this the best.
Skunks! I live in a large city. I have squirrels, cats, ‘possums, raccoons, and Skunks! Deer come across my front yard once in a while. All wander through but during the colder months some choose to live under my neighbor’s shed. The damage caused are little holes across the yard BUT the skunks dig under the wooden fence, Every Night, even though I cover the holes with bricks, stacked two high in some places❗️The fence surrounds my entire backyard so this isn’t a practical, long-term solution. My fear is that I’ll walk out and get sprayed some night. My motion sensor light does NOT deter any of the wildlife. UGH! Is a wire mesh buried along the fence line my only solution?
I hoped I’d hear solutions for squirrels. I didn’t really hear that. It seemed like deer and wildlife in the ground was the focus. I guess I’ll keep hoping the bird spikes will work. The squirrels have already ate some of my tulip bulbs.
For squirrels they listed plants at the beginning and also said coyote urine. Someone in the comments mentioned putting moth balls in a mesh bag. I’ll try that too. I also have a horrible issue with feral cats all over our neighborhood!
@@tracythomas343 hmm maybe but I don’t let my dogs go to the bathroom in my garden. It’s gated so I can control them, just not all the other critters 🤣
I love this series but it didn’t help me with the feral cat issue. I didn’t really hear any tips for that except motion sensor which I’ve tried and it didn’t work. Any other ideas from anyone here that’s had success?
There is no way to get rid of deer. Some days I have eleven deers in my garden. There are so many trapped in our neighborhood. They even eat deer resistance plants. I go outside and they just look at me. I am ready just to quit. They even ate my allium.
Big dogs and a doggie door. My huskies sit on my deck guarding the yard like lions and any rabbit, squirrel, deer that enters is chased out in about 2 seconds flat. Once that happens the first month the don’t come back. Wonder if borrowing a friends dog to dogs sit for a week if you don’t want to own long term would help. Bringing it back temporarily to remind them.
I hear ya! Same in my yard. I have tried to remove all deer favorites and replace with more of the stuff they are not eating, but it's only a matter of time. This year was especially bad because of the drought and this year (first time in 14 years I've lived here) I now have a rabbit problem too. I'm nearly ready to surrender. I thought gardening would be a great hobby during retirement, but it's been a lot of hassle, disappointment, and heartbreak. I'm in Wild Wonderful WV. Wild, yes. Wonderful, not always. Raccoons, Groundhogs, Skunks, Turkeys, O'possums, Squirrels, Moles, Chipmunks, Birds. These are all the things I've seen in my yard. I tried bird feeders once. Disaster. It was basically bait to draw ALL wildlife into my yard.
Yes! Whenever people are suggesting things to try that they have heard for deer, I’m always like…you don’t deal with deer do you? I plant said “deer resistant” plants…only about a 1/3 of them work…it is so devestating!
Raccoons!!! The 38yrs I’ve lived in my house, I’ve never had raccoons till this year. She literally unscrewed the bottom of my finch feeder, seeds everywhere!!! What a mess!! Don’t want to hurt her, just want her gone before it’s baby season again. I only saw 1 baby with her, but was told there was 4 😮
Hey Janey! The audio track defaults to Spanish now (I watch from Mexico). While I imagine a lot of people would like that, I really don’t. I like the OPTION to hear you in Spanish, but I like your own voice much better.
Hi Luisa! We have been trying to troubleshoot, and it seems that something changed with TH-cam’s default settings. We have changed it back, so please let me know if that has fixed the issue!
You skipped cats. Cats cats everywhere! Tired of hosting their litterbox needs in my flowerbeds. I'm in the process of laying hardware cloth on every square inch of unplanted area in my flowerbeds.

It has to be stored out of reach of critters.
we have everything that loves biotone, foxes armadillo, opossum
so i usually keep round pieces of screen about 2ft by 2ft with a hole cut in the middle put it down after i freahly plant something and then put bricks on that in a semi circle. i can see where they try to dig around it but never make it to the plant, oncw the biotonw breaks down u can remove the screening and use it again i usually leave it down for about 3 months just to be safe
I can’t remember the beautiful plant to the right (or Michael’s left) with the white flowers? You guys are so fun to watch.
It looks like white “Iceberg roses” next to Michael
@ thank you.
The 3 foot double fence works really well for the deer……..until they figure out they can come through the driveway
😂
Wallabies are my problem, solution shut the gate at all times and don't plant close to the fence :)
👍
You can keep deer from your plants by spraying. I have used Bobbex for years on my hostas, azaleas, hydrangeas etc with great success. There are other brands but I like this the best.
My question is how to control frogs? They are in my shed as well.
Yup, I live in Washington and otters came in and ate all my koi. I give up.
My son has so many deer in his yard he has a pooper scooper for them 😂
How about voles wrecking the lawn?
I hoped I’d hear solutions for squirrels. I didn’t really hear that. It seemed like deer and wildlife in the ground was the focus. I guess I’ll keep hoping the bird spikes will work. The squirrels have already ate some of my tulip bulbs.
For squirrels they listed plants at the beginning and also said coyote urine. Someone in the comments mentioned putting moth balls in a mesh bag. I’ll try that too. I also have a horrible issue with feral cats all over our neighborhood!
@ I know my dog pees on some of the pots, I wonder if that has the same effect as coyote urine? 🤷♀️😁
@@tracythomas343 hmm maybe but I don’t let my dogs go to the bathroom in my garden. It’s gated so I can control them, just not all the other critters 🤣
🙏🏻
Janey, what happened to your barn cats?
I love this series but it didn’t help me with the feral cat issue. I didn’t really hear any tips for that except motion sensor which I’ve tried and it didn’t work. Any other ideas from anyone here that’s had success?
You did not mention armadillo s as a garden pest here in the south
I am dealing with something that likes my beneficial plants like garlic society and marigold.

What about rabbit resistant?
Deer is a non count/mass noun.
Yes! Whenever people are suggesting things to try that they have heard for deer, I’m always like…you don’t deal with deer do you? I plant said “deer resistant” plants…only about a 1/3 of them work…it is so devestating!
@@mindybond9166an 8-10 foot fence, which isn't allowed by most bylaws, is the only deterrent.
@ You fixed it!
Sheep is eating my plants and they are not my sheep. What plants can I plant that they do not eat
Squirrels that eat my avocados are the most frustrating
Didn’t hear anything about moles. Besides deer, it’s moles.
The 2 of you are magic! I love Mr Glassmans stories 💚
Fake owls work for 2 weeks....then the birds sit on their heads🤦🏾♀️
You skipped cats. Cats cats everywhere! Tired of hosting their litterbox needs in my flowerbeds. I'm in the process of laying hardware cloth on every square inch of unplanted area in my flowerbeds.

My video language is Japanese today . No option to change to English. It only happens on your channel.
Mine was in German with no English audio option on the TV, but it’s in English like normal on my phone
Mine mine is in a different language on my TV, no English option. Ok on my phone. This is happening only on this channel.
Try going to the wheel on the top right on the video screen, click on audio track and change it to English. Hope that works!
