Janie that is way too thick of greens and straw that you’re giving those tiny chickens. It’s not going to break down for you and I would be very worried that it would attract mice who would want to nest in something like that.
everyone has their own opinion on the right way to raise chickens and I appreciate that. It's a very polarizing subject. I've done my research (as I always do) and have chosen the deep litter method for my personal property.
Janey, I did my composting same as yours but I have so much waste from my garden it took too much space. So now I have my husband help me (usually during fall cleanup)and we pull everything out, mulch it up with our lawn mower then throw it back in the bins. It’s amazing how much space it saves and it also helps turn and add oxygen back in. By this time we have dried up leaves I add to the mix and in spring I have wonderful compost to use in my garden.
For your vego garden bed flooring you could purchase horse stall rubber mats and no one would see the water issue under mats due to the horse mat specially designed for that. Plus it’s safe to walk on.
@@stephaniefullerHeads up, I bought a Sun Joe electric chipper shredder, and the name is totally inaccurate. It should be called a chopper. We used to have a gas chipper, and that truly chipped wood small and turned green waste into pulp. The smaller electric model is so inferior. It does make garden waste smaller, but I can't shred leaves anymore.
You should cut your plants that you remove in very small pieces for the compost heap, instead of throwing it on the compost heap intacked. It takes up less space and you will be surprised how much you can throw in your compost with smaller pieces! It will also break down quicker! You will also have a neater compost heap.😂💯👏😀
Hi Janey G’day from Australia! I just discovered your channel. You are doing a great job from the blank slate that you started with! Your enthusiasm for gardening is contagious, you have inspired me! Regards, Nicole
Good point about masking when cleaning coop and any activity with chips. We have a tree service business and deliver a lot of chips. Chips mold… it’s a part of the natural breakdown of the wood. You want to limit your exposure by wearing an N95 when spreading.
Great video, everything you did today looks so fresh, clean and tidy. Boy oh boy this is what i need to do tidy and clean my chicken house and run and sooooooo much cleaning and mulching my flower beds
Janey, you will be blown away by how much less space your yard waste will take up in the compost bin if you chip it or as someone else recommended, run it over with a mulching mower. For a chipper, gas powered are SO much better at the job (I miss mine), but the downside is the exhaust smell and noise. Little electric chippers take a lot more time to do the job and don't do it as well (mine just chops into 1 inch chunks), but they are quiet. If you have a tiny garden, you could get by with a small electric, but on a big property, gas is the way to go. I hope you put the chicken bedding in the compost!
Recommend you look into the wicking cells for the bottom of your raised beds to keep them from leaking. Great show, love PW plants and enjoy watching and learning from you. I also really liked your visit to Iseli Nursery and actually purchased two Low Glow pines after seeing it - they are exactly what I was looking for. Keep up the good work and your disposition and smile are wonderful.
I agree with you about the Vego beds. I have mine on concrete and am very disappointed because of the staining and mess on the concrete patio. Don't get me wrong, I love the tall beds but I will be moving them to another location soon!!! Purchased your cute ornaments!!! So excited. I missed out last year because they sold out so fast! ❤M
Put your soiled chicken bedding in your compost. It will help it break down faster. Maybe once all the piles start to shrink, you will be able to tern them all into one bin.
Hi Janey! I love my cob web broom too. I really enjoy watching your videos and learning so much from you. I have a suggestion, I think it would look really nice if you stained your concrete a slate gray or black so the run off from your raised beds won't be so noticeable. Plus the stain will protect the concrete an give it a little shine too. Please keep giving us this amazing material!!!
Jane you might want to think about spreading diatomaceous earth around after you put that fresh straw down and a little in there food. Keep those bugs away believe me you don’t want an outbreak. Love your videos ❤
If you add a shovel full of soil to each of your bins, the microbes will help things break down quicker. I don’t turn mine. I just simply layer it and water as needed. You’ll be amazed how much faster it’ll break down with that soil added. I live in the city and I have 15 (or is it 17) bins. They’re all in a row very nicely so my city neighbors don’t get upset with me.
Janey, you don’t have to change the drainage or any concrete work. I think the problem will be solved if you use the metal edging thing around that concrete pad to hold a layer of gravel on the concrete, that by itself will make everything look great. 😊 Concealer for the stained concrete, so to speak 😅
Try adding compost starter (or manure, or fertilizer). It significantly speeds up the breakdown. But I also live in a pretty rainy climate. I don't believe Charles Dowding flips his bays very often, but he definitely adds manure.
To train your chicks to use the nesting box, leave one of their eggs in the nesting box or you can get a wood egg. They will notice the egg and eventually learn to go in that spot.
Love your channel and watched you from the beginning. I have to comment on your cleaning out the chicken coop. There is lots of dust from debris and feathers that are airborne you will see it if you watch back. This is & can be dangerous to inhale. It's called bird fanciers lung. My mom grew up on a small birdbreeder farm of show chickens and other fowl. I remember her mentioning that doctors had asked her if she was raised where there were birds. Her lungs had been damaged from breathing in the dander from the hens and rosters when she was a young girl. The same can happen from parrots and other caged birds. Please consider wearing a mask especially when cleaning out the coop. Sandy in WPB,Fl.
You should stain your concrete a marble look with black, rust & brown. It would look uniform and blend your mulch, black accents and your rust spots. Look up stained concrete it's very pretty
Dear, I think 🤔 you clogged up the drain. I wonder if those are connected to the drain from the house. Look at the plans. Because a lot of compost is going down the drain. Look into it. If not remove the vego beds before the house poop backs up.
Janey, definitely wear a mask when cleaning your chicken coop. My neighbor was just hospitalized with a fungus in her lungs which is gotten from being around bird droppings.
Maybe edge your raised bed area with the same edging you used for your walkways with the decomposed granite or use a gravel that matches the color of the decomposed granite.
Since you don’t like the staining on your concrete, why don’t you put gravel down and it will hide the concrete stains. You could use metal edging or something like that to keep the concrete gravel in inside the edging. I hope that makes sense.
Hi Janey, can i please add to the chorus of 'please wear a mask while cleaning your coop' salmonella from cleaning a coop is real, wiped me out for 3 days 🤮
Love your little chickens. Be sure and check the spot where it was nestled in, you might find another egg.😊 I don’t think they fly or jump up and roost. The nesting boxes might be too high for them to get in.
Toss your compost over for the goats lol they will get rid of it quick!! (mostly joking) But on a more serious note...If you move your compost beds to a more sunnier area they will break down quicker.
Are those asparagus ferns? Have the deer bothered them at all? The zone method definitely works for us ADHD gardeners! 😆 I’m sure you know, but you didn’t mention it here… I received a notice that the avian flu has had a resurgence here in California. They recommend zero exposure to wild birds so maybe covering any wood ships etc. that go into the coop. In addition, always wearing gloves and I believe you do this but, coop only shoes. cleaning all rakes and any tools used inside. The coop with bleach will also help. It’s such a devastating flu. I would hate for you to lose any more of your girls.❤ regarding the standing water on your patio… I know this may be more than you want to tackle, but you could remove a small section in the middle and either put in drain or a French drain with a decorative top.
🍂Hi Janey, Jason 🦮 I've been needing to do Fall clean up, but got a little nippy and time got away from me, but I did have help with my raised bed clean up yay, I've already got it all figured out what I'm planting. Thank you for sharing this video. Your chickens are so adorable they seem to like you talking to them how cute. Have a great rest of your day. 🍂 😊👋
Why don’t you frame the concrete garden bed with edging stones or bricks and just lay down some inexpensive pea gravel right away without moving anything? You could literally do it in one day without it costing too much and it would hide the water pooling.
Hi Janet, I love watching your channel. Have you thought about pulling up the concrete patio where your vego beds are? Probably hard work, but you’re not loving the patio and it would give you more garden space. It seems to me that covering it with gravel will be a bit of a band aid, the staining will still be there underneath and the drainage problem will still be there as well. Just an idea 😊
Hire Robby and Brent to tear up the concrete pad 😂. I’ve heard they love ripping up concrete. Where does that drain go? Is anything else connected to it?
Janey, have you considered having that concrete area broken up and hauled away? Our backyard has a concrete pad that was used as a basketball area. It was installed by a previous owner. I hate it! Just wondering how expensive it would be to have someone get rid of it. Thanks for the heads up about your holiday items!
Janie that is way too thick of greens and straw that you’re giving those tiny chickens. It’s not going to break down for you and I would be very worried that it would attract mice who would want to nest in something like that.

Buy a chipper. Tiny pieces will decompose much quicker.
I want a shredder!
@@stephaniefullerHeads up, I bought a Sun Joe electric chipper shredder, and the name is totally inaccurate. It should be called a chopper. Have you thought of staining your concrete? A darker colour might hide the rust stains.
I came here to say the same thing! Maybe a brown and gold marbling look to hide the stains.
Never thought of that, that is a great idea, if it wouldn't make it to hot, heat rises. That's the only draw back.❤
Also you could do a layer of mulch or gravel and some metal edging to keep it in place

Dear Janey, please wear a mask when cleaning the chicken coop or laying wood chips to protect yourself against Histoplasmosis
Good point about masking when cleaning coop and any activity with chips. We have a tree service business and deliver a lot of chips. Chips mold… it’s a part of the natural breakdown of the wood. You want to limit your exposure by wearing an N95 when spreading.
I agree. I’ve developed asthma later in life. I am so aware now of airborne debris.
Please wear a mask.
I agree it’s a thing. Chicken poop is not good for lungs.
Great video, everything you did today looks so fresh, clean and tidy. Boy oh boy this is what i need to do tidy and clean my chicken house and run and sooooooo much cleaning and mulching my flower beds
Your calm gardening voice is so nice with morning coffee. Cheers from North Carolina.
I like the maintenance videos. Very satisfying.

Consider a stained concrete overlay (or DIY a painted faux stone flooring) using various dark brown tones to mask the staining.🧡
Recommend you look into the wicking cells for the bottom of your raised beds to keep them from leaking.

If you haven't already done it, place a fake egg in the nesting box. That'll entice them to lay theirs in there too.
Thought the same as the chickens don't have old chickens to show them the ropes.
I love maintenance videos…..great way to learn new ways of doing things
love the videos of when you are around you own garden...I learn so much. Thanks! LOVE Monty your helper!!

You are such a hard worker and seem to have lots of energy, you keep everything so nice and well maintained.
Great job Janey and I love fly lady method too . I had a chance to pet a silky chicken named cream puff.
Chinese Pistache Trees are GORGEOUS in the fall!!!
Put your soiled chicken bedding in your compost. It will help it break down faster. Maybe once all the piles start to shrink, you will be able to tern them all into one bin.
Wait! What!? California has a rainy season? Every year is a crap shoot for how much rain we get. And we are thankful for every drop.

I think Hazel liked the sweet potato vine nest you made for her❤️

HAHA Janey, of nothing else, they have a cozy bed.
Out in the garden is more fun than at your desk.
Paint the patio under the beds a brown color so you don’t seee the stains as much🤷♀️
Wonder if you should wear a mask while working in the chicken coop?
How about painting the cement pad, or covering it with wood chips, or decking blocks?
I do zone maintenance also. It works great for me. 👍

Janey, you don’t have to change the drainage or any concrete work.

Janey, are you going to get more chickens? You need at least 4 more so they can grow together ❤️
Hello, thank you for sharing very useful videos. Wish you always healthy and happy.
Maybe you should paint the concrete? If it’s black, the stains probably won’t be seen as much.
Janey …why don’t you stain your concrete pad brown ? 🫶🌻♥️

What would happen if you stained the patio around the Vego beds? Just a brown would probably help things blend together quite well.
Your neighbors goats need a gate they can compost for you 😂
Love this subject, Janie! So helpful!
I know this seems horrible but the spider webs catch bugs, so if there are spider webs near a plant there is a good chance that plant may have pests.
I love the beautiful girls, and Monty my boy ! You look like you need a hug from mom 😳

May I recommend just painting the cement either brown or black in the mean time? Quick and inexpensive fix🤷🏽♀️
Won't the rotting vines introduce bacteria & mold that could harm the chickens ?

Who is Courtney that Janey mentions at the end with her shop?

Definitely a chipper is needed. If you're serious about eggs, you need more chickens, hardy prolific chickens.
Heya..it's straw NOT hay..just say'n. Thanks ☮️
Sorry, but no. This is alfalfa hay.
Janey I’ve loved you for years! Please return to real videos. I’m not a fan of narrated ones. But…still love you!
Thanks but you don’t have to watch the narrated ones. Other people enjoy them and I enjoy making them.
