Beautiful. And you've got such great plans! For the river bed, I'd really warn against using weed barrier. It doesn't stop weeds coming up from the bottom, and it doesn't stop them coming in from the top. And when weeds do seed in between the rocks, the roots get really stuck in the weed barrier and are really hard to pull out.

vinegar/road salt spray certainly works to reduce, nearly eliminate weeds in areas where there are no desirable plants, like dry river beds, pathways, patios...

Thanks! I've looked into the pros and cons of the weed barrier. I don't want to be worried about weeds in the dry creek bed all the time which I will be if I don't have some type of barrier. We lived in a home that had a dry creek bed (builder installed it) and it had a really great weed barrier and I NEVER had to pull weeds in it so I think I will try that technique at this property again! I don't expect it to be perfect but hopefully will help! Cross your fingers for me! 💗

You know what would be cool. Place a “Lavender River” to outline your dry creek creek bed in amongst your grass. Like your inspiration picture of the “Lavender River “. I enjoy your videos, so inspirational ❤

Janey, it is hard to believe how far you have come with this garden in such a relatively short time - wow! The center island is really shaping up and I love how you included plants of different heights - trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs, etc. - it will look mature very quickly because of that and of course those artistic curves lend it grace and beauty beyond the plants. Brava!

It has been so fun watching these spaces become what you’ve made them, Janey! 1. I can’t believe how much growth the Willow tree has put on! 2. Have you considered painting your tree stakes black like you did at your last house? 3. I bet your alliums will be fine. Mine, in 8b, look like yours right now and they are gorgeous earlier in the season. ❤

I watch a lot of videos of gardening & just can’t design my yard. I finally started because I get anxious & overwhelmed. So, I took a suggestion of one channel that said just do a 4’x4’ area & add to it or do another area & then combine. It did allow me to start because I had one area I imagined for a native pollinator area & it’s a big I guess 25’x12’ area. I feel so happy w/ it. I’ve gotta start another area. I am so envious that you can start w/ a blank slate & create.

What I've learned is that you need to be prepared that your first go is not going to be the final product. Every plant can be moved so dont put too much pressure on yourself to put it in EXACTLY the right place! Basically don't worry about messing up just start planting! 💗

What a difference cooler weather makes! The front garden color is wonderful. Janey, could you devote some time to discussing dormant spraying (when you do your lavender redbud)? I have crape myrtle bark scale on all my 6 trees. According to the information I found, I will have to dormant spray the bark once the tree has lost it's leaves to, hopefully, get rid of the insects, I have never had to do this on any of my trees, Thank you!

The garden is looking fabulous. You must be so proud of the progress. Don't worry about not pruning the roses correctly. Here in Australia we just use hedging shears to reshape ours a couple of times a year when they are looking wild and they look fantastic as pruning encourages more flowers and a better shape. I always remember this advice given by a David Austen grower a long time ago. Roses are so resilient.

WOW! Everything is beautiful. I live in zone 8b and alliums tend to grow in the fall and spring and go dormant in the heat of summer we get in the high 90’s up to 105 from July through September. I usually just cut the dead tops off and they pop back up in late September for me.

Hi, Janey: I always enjoy watching your progress!! You've accomplished a lot. I've used Liriope in my garden and would suggest trying it next to your lavender. Unlike other grasses, it doesn't wander with its root system. It does get larger, similar to a Hosta, where you can divide it every 3 or 4 years and get more plants. Even in the heat of the summer, it just keeps on doing its thing without showing any signs of stress. My kind of plant! Also, just a thought about your island. I also follow Northlawn Flower Farm, and Danielle just added a custom-built library to her garden. It's such a cute structure. The workmanship is just so beautiful, and she used reclaimed materials. I wondered if you could partner with that same builder to do something for you. Danielle is in PA, but maybe the builder would love to visit sunny CA!! Just thinking out-of-the-box!

Hi Janey! I found a Nuccio Pearl Camellia at Costco and was so excited because I wanted one to plant as a remembrance for my mom. She loved Camellias. I had also heard that gophers don't like allium, so I planted a couple of bags from Costco without gopher cages and was so excited to see them bloom. Then I noticed that each one was disappearing as the gopher munched away. Arggggh!

Me also, my mother loved them. But hard to grown in the hot dry desert where I live, only in pure shade. Which I don't have much of. So I'm growing in pots on my patio. She had pink and white variegated (which is very hard to find) red, white, and pink.

Everything is looking gorgeous! Just FYI, gophers LOVE alliums, garlic and onions, they are one of their favorites and will go for those things first. At least the ones around here do and in my friend, Paula's, garden too. Her husband removed the gopher protection of one garlic and onion bed and a gopher decimated them all. He trapped it so it is history but she lost her crop. I have to plant my ornamental alliums, garlic and onions in gopher cages or raised beds with protection on the bottom. We find gophers tunnels where they circle the bed trying to get in during the season which makes it is easy to know where to trap them. I know this goes against what everyone claims but here those plants do not repel gophers, rather it attracts them or so that has been our experience with them. Maybe it is California gophers. 😉

Good morning. For the Alliums that have new growth you should not pull them out, just cut back the old growth in the spring and leave it alone. It will naturalize and will expand as well as the seed heads with spread new plants into the garden. Therefore you will save yourself money. As well as rabbits, rodents and deer do not like alliums or anything else that is in the onion family. You may have had gopher mounts near them however the bulbs were not touched.

The garden is looking amazing! Just a suggestion on the creek bed though. You might want to dig a bit deeper especially along the center if you want it to look more like a creek and not a path. Once you cover in rocks it will significantly raise in height and look more levelled with surrounding area making it look more like a rock path. Adding the trees in your garden was a game changer. Just love the structure it brings to your yard ❤ You and Jason have come a long way in such a short period of time. Great job!
