I was at the skatepark yesterday and there was a rather heavy guy, likely 200-230 LBS in his late 30s or early 40s who was in a flat area practising ollies and kickflips repeatedly for two hours. When I left to go to work, he was *still* there, and now jumping onto ledges. I am 215 and lean, and only wish I was as good as this guy!
Work at it folks... if someone who is over 200 LBS with a beer belly can do this so well, anyone can learn!!

weed nose practicing during quarantine is the best because less people will see you fall (it’s totally normal to fall but some people stay away from it because of that aspect, so think about it less people are out so less will see you fall, and the less nervous you are the less you actually do fall so it all works out) plus once quarantine IS over then youll look like an OK amateur instead of a newbie at the skatepark because u got all the practice in :)
i suggest doing it in ur neighborhood or streets/alleys and stuff and if ur roads are as sloped and cracked as mine and it makes u too nervous (it did for me at first when i got back into skating but im used to it now) then find basketball&tennis courts in ur area and skate on those, tennis ones in particular will be softer landings and they will be emptier places than skateparks n parking lots will. hope this helps :)

I had my ”click” today. When things just locked in place for me. Started trying to skateboard now 10 months ago after only trying it as a kid. Been trying to do ollies on and off for 7 months or so but not really intensely. But for about the last two months I’ve been doing it a bit more intensely. But have been a bit terrified since I’ve managed to injure the same wrist twice in a week so been afraid to commit fully and slip out and land with the same wrist again.
Today though I landed 18 rolling ollies in a row. Some a bit sketchy for sure but some that were probably the best I’ve ever done.
Overall the pop sounded so crisp today. The slightly delayed slide felt so good and on point. I really felt the board level out. The difference between my old ollies is that now I felt and percieved the entire motion from start to end almost in slow motion in comparison to just landing before with no clear idea of how I ended up there.

been doing the same, but since september been really practicing every day. and i can relate to this. i have done a few now where it was like slow motion i actually had time to process and feel my foot leveling me out. Before it was all over in a blink and i could never be consistent or work out why it was good or bad that time. There are many factors to ollie i guess, it just takes different amounts of time for the timing to click in your head.

    • @RikRiorik
      @RikRiorik 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ThisIsDownstate love it! Yeah I find you’re constantly finding some little thing that’s part of the bigger picture to work on be it height, stability, keeping straight or just levelling out. Or any number of things connected to these. Keep practicing is really the best advice. Enough attempts and eventually you’ll start figuring it out.

Also really focusing on kicking forward with my front foot to level it out. Thanks! Im a mom and sometimes feel like I should give it up because it's weird for a mom to skate but that feeling of popping a solid ollie is just too good to give up. • @mattpeak2226
      @mattpeak2226 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@jetmak6975 about 5 months to learn it rolling. Don't learn it stationary it's a waste of time TRUST me. Start rolling slow. Baby steps. Skating is VERY VERY hard and takes a VERY long time. But to your point about waking up and losing all progress, that's totally normal. Happens all the time. To everyone. Even Nyjah. You didn't lose any progress brother trust me. It's all in your head. In fact I just had one of those days last week. I couldn't even ollie. But I found a way to fix it and it's all mental. You have to completely zero in man. Totally focused on you and your board and nothing else. Push yourself with each and every single ollie. Literally try your hardest each and every single time. Think about everything. From squatting lower to lifting your front leg higher and popping that back leg harder. Think about and visualize every thing that you do. You can make bad days a learning experience. But man the biggest piece of advice I can give you is something every skater will tell you because it's true and the ONLY way to get good is do not give up. Keep going no matter what. Skating is so hard and takes SOOO LOOONG to get good at. With time you'll get more comfortable and confident on your board. It just takes a long time man. Keep at it!!

The "tackle small Ollies" tip really helped me out -- For some reason, in my head, the science of performing an Ollie while moving doesn't quite compute at this moment, but with that tip in mind I am able to consistently Ollie (small ones so far), and now, I can pop the board while moving without compeletely losing it the moment I pick up my knees. I am now more confident than ever that I can finally learn to get over curbs at speed. Even the good how-to videos don't stress the importance of the little Ollie. I don't comment on TH-cam Videos but you, sir, deserve the credit where it's due. You rock! 🤘🏽

I have a major tip for anyone still struggling.
I used to not be able to get my back wheel off the ground at all and it was mainly all because I didn't pop hard enough (due to me being scared to pop hard for some reason and that could of gone alot easier if I was already comfortable on my board) and I also did the foot drag motion somewhat but I only dragged it up a little or bearly at all. I also had the timing all wrong because I kind of took it like steps (pop, drag, land) but really its just supposed to be all at one motion. I finally got my ollies off the ground after getting educated about them and really understanding the proper way to do them. It wasn't just that but it took me a lot of practice and I mean alot like 3 hours a day straight. PRACTICE IS VERY IMPORTANT TRUST ME IT PAYS OFF AND I LEARNED THAT. but annyways here is a list of things you should know for your ollies:
    1. Bend your knees and use them as a spring when you jump
    2. Actually jump while doing the motion
    4. Think of the pop as a flick of your foot
    5. Think of dragging first, because the pop is really quick and it will happen if you know how to do this correctly. (This works for me when I think about it because it helps me always get the timing right but it doesn't work for everybody)
    6. When all 4 wheels are in the air push down the foot that you dragged down to the ground, while lifting the other foot that you popped.
    7. Alot of vids or ppl dont mention this but the drag foot placement before you ollie is super important. If you are a bit taller put the foot you drag with closer to the foot you pop with. If you are shorter like me put the foot you drag with further away from the foot you pop with. (BUT MAKE SURE THAT YOUR FOOT YOU USE TO DRAG IS STILL CLOSE TO THE MIDDLE)
    8. Land each foot on the bolts
    9. If this still doesn't work go back to the simple motions of pop, drag, and land and keep on doing them over and over.
The best advice I can give to you is to practice you will get it eventually and be consistent like do it everyday even if you just try 10 a day you will see some improvement in a week.
If you have any questions feel free to reply!! Have a good day/night
YALL CAN DO THIS I BELEIVE IN YOU🤗🙃

also i have a little tip. when you are pushing your front foot forward to balance the board dont think of it as a slide. try to do the pop and front foot forward together in 1 motion. and sometimes it doesnt work because your back foot is on the board so it cant go higher. so try to jump as high as you can (try to jump and bringing your knees to your chest)

So I learned to skate when I was 8, just pushing goofy for 2 years, and got very comfortable. When I was 10 I started to learn tricks, and I have absolutely no idea how I made this mistake but I learned my ollies regular, and never did them rolling. When I saw the problem, I started to learn pushing regular but over the years I never fully got comfortable, most likely to me skating on and off for 6 years. All I learned in 6 years was better board control and higher ollies riding regular. Now 16, I finally decided to just say fuck it and I’m just relearning ollies goofy instead of regular and it’s a real damn struggle

In case it helps anyone, the game changer for me when transitioning from stationary ollies to moving ollies was to lean my weight on my front foot while doing the moving ollie. I think stationary ollies conditioned me to put most of my weight on my back foot because I was thinking about the pop a lot. If you feel like your board is going to shoot out from under you forward when doing moving ollies, try leaning your weight on your front foot before popping.

Sounds like you need to stay centered over the board and stick your foot out or pull it up so it doesn't hit the board. Ball of your foot should be near the edge of the board behind the bolts, do an Ollie and flick at the conclave, keep your leg out until it's done flipping. If you get credit carded, your not sliding your foot up the board like an ollie.

if you want to ollie higher then put your front foot further back from the front bolts, skate a bit faster than you are comfortable with, and when you go to slide your front foot make sure you roll your ankle and slide your front foot up the board as aggressive as possible.. Also, to get better quicker, make yourself ollie over something. Pick something that is taller than you are comfortable with and dont stop till you do it. if youre like me skateboarding doesnt come naturally like it does for these instagram kids so you gotta be stubborn and force it. i have been skating for 2 years now and im still practicing my ollies everyday.. you can do it if you put in the work. I wasn't getting any pop whatsoever until today, I noticed that when I was trying to pop the board while jumping I was shifting my weight mostly onto my back foot, thinking I needed to load up the back leg to get more power in my pops but it was having the opposite effect. Once I shifted my weight back into the center I was able to get a little pop going and have all 4 wheels off the ground. I still got a long way to go, and I don't even know if that's the right thing I'm doing but I'm gonna keep practicing

To anyone who has trouble doing an Ollie up a curbing or any other type of step - up...
First off - it's NOT as scary as it seems.
First off try just popping the board and jumping... Don't even do am Ollie. Your back truck will just ride up the curb and you'll stay on the board... Just make sure you pop high enough to get your FRONT foot and wheels above the curb... Cuz obviously if your front wheels don't go higher than the curb, you'll fall.
So just practice popping and literally riding up the curb... Helps to start with one of those curbs that's kinda angled, but it works just fine with square curbs also.
When there's no pressure on the back of your board from you standing on it you'd be surprised how easily the back truck can just kinda ride over stuff.
So make sure sure you can do an Ollie rolling first... Then try doing an Ollie over a small obstacle, like a garden hose or a 2x4 piece of wood etc... Small stuff.
Then work on your rolling Ollie until you can Ollie over a board. Not a board laying down - a board sitting primo.
Back when I started skating in the 90s, we had 2 different ways to measure how high you can Ollie... We called it "true" or "stack"...
For example - being able to Ollie "2 true" meant you could Ollie over 2 boards where the wheels of the top board were sitting on the edge of the bottom board, and the edge of the top board was sitting on the wheels of the bottom board... So you were doing an Ollie over the "true" height of 2 boards. Hopefully that makes sense.
"Stack" meant putting the top board in between the trucks and deck of the bottom board... So only a little more than half the top board was sticking up above the bottom board. Hopefully that makes sense lol....
So 2 true is HIGHER than 2 stack... And 3 stack is just barely higher than 2 true....
Next time you have a couple buddies with you, have an Ollie competition. If you can Ollie 2 true or 3 stack, that's pretty damn good and it means you have enough control over the board to Ollie down bigger stair sets, or Ollie into grinds etc.
My highest Ollie ever was 3 true +1 stack... I know that's confusing... But imagine 3 boards sitting "true"... So literally the exact height of 3 skateboards, then the 4th board had the deck in between the deck and the trucks of the 3rd/top board.
I know this is weird sounding to people new to skating, I'm sure there's a video about the difference between "true" and "stack" on TH-cam somewhere... I'm not sure if skaters still even use true and stack... I haven't heard the kids using it - they just use the "stack" technique and refer to it as being able to Ollie 2 boards, or 4 boards etc.
But 4 stack is WAY smaller/shorter than 3 "true".
Basically 4 stack is like 2 true +the height of the base of 2 trucks.... So like an extra 4 inches.
It also might have been a Florida thing because when I went to Colorado and people asked me how high can I Ollie, and I said I can do 3 true easily and have done 3 true *1 stack, they looked at me like I had 2 heads.
Then once I got a few boards and set it up they understood.
So moral of the story is practice just doing rolling Ollie, and get comfortable enough with it that you can literally Ollie anytime over any little cracks or whatever. See if you can do 3 or 4 Ollie's back to back without taking more than 1 second in between... That will teach you how to Ollie and keep your feet on the right spots to land and be ready to bust another Ollie right away.
It's just practice, and getting over the fear of face planting.
90 percent of skating is getting over the fear... 10 percent is commitment.
And don't be afraid to wear a helmet or elbow pads at first... Don't wear knee pads cuz it'll feel weird and negatively affect your Ollie's.
If someone makes fun of you, tell em to shut up... If you get in a fight, you'll win because you have a helmet on!!! They will punch your helmet, cry and you can go about your day and practice, practice, practice.
Last tip - LEARN HOW TO FALL.
The best skaters in the world slam HARD but they know how to fall so they don't hurt themselves.... Basically you just learn to let yourself fall, and roll into the fall instead of slamming.
That comes with practice too, but that's something you can easily learn at home in the driveway or parking lot... It sounds dumb, but practice falling.
Then you won't be as scared to fall. Which means you won't have as much fear...
Which means you'll commit to your tricks...
Which means you'll stomp your tricks and become a badass skater.
Get out there and practice kids... And don't let anyone hate on you if you're a beginner.
There's a HUGE difference between a beginner and a poser....
If you're actually riding a board and trying to do tricks, you cannot possibly be a poser. So don't let that word bother you.
Posers are the people who buy a pair of skate shoes and Supreme clothes but have no skateboard - and they don't ever ride or try any tricks.
If you're trying, you're a damn skater. Period.
Don't give up, and accept the fact that you WILL FALL DOWN ALOT.
The best skater you know who did the sickest trick on video probably fell about 20 times before landing the trick once.
So if you fall more than you stomp it, you're just like the pros!!!
If you stomp everything first try - you're not challenging yourself to get better and try harder tricks.
Everyone starts by having a gross Ollie and face planting and getting hurt. Literally everyone.
For the first year I skated, literally the only trick I could do was an Ollie. For an entire year.
It was because I was not committed to trying other tricks... And I got called a poser ALOT by kids who could do a kick flip.
The good part was that since all I did for an entire year was Ollie - I got really good at them.. And the Ollie is the base for almost every flat ground trick.
Once I told myself OK Mike you're gonna learn how to kick flip... I spent an hour or so on carpet, holding onto a counter top until I could land on the board.
Then I got rid of the carpet but still held onto something until I could land it repeatedly.
Then I got the carpet back out and stopped holding on - and just doing kick flips on carpet until I could land 5 in a row....I did all that in 1 afternoon and after that day I just went outside and practiced in my driveway, and practiced doing it rolling... Slow at first then slightly faster... Until it felt comfortable. I could do a kick flip from that day forward no problem. I did the same thing the next day to learn heel flips. It took a while, but I learned those in one day also.
I still remember so well going skating after school Friday with the whole crew of the homies... It was like our thing to have everyone go skating after school Friday, and stay the night at each others house so we could all go meet up late Friday to skate some more.
I went from only doing Ollie's on a Friday to doing kick flips and heel flips the next Friday... And all the kids who were calling me a poser a week ago were suddenly asking how I learned so fast... And weren't calling me poser anymore because alot of them couldn't do heel flips.
Learning those 2 basic flip tricks got me super stoked... And within like 3 or 4 months I could do tre flips, and do kick and heel flips down stairs or up onto ledges... After 1 year of skating, I could only Ollie.
After 2 years, I could do all the basic flip tricks and I learned how to board slide, 50-50 grind, and do flip tricks into a 50-50 grind on small curbs and ledges. All of the sudden I became one of the best skaters in my middle school (junior high) and the kids who used to call me poser were asking me for advice on how to do tricks.
    That felt damn good!
So don't give up on anything and don't be afraid to learn how to do tricks YOUR way - whether it's on grass or carpet, or sk8r trainers or whatever.
I so wish we had sk8r trainers when I started... We used to steal tennis balls from people at the local tennis court, cut a big slice into them and put them on our wheels so we could learn tricks without rolling, and it worked pretty damn well for us.
Don't get frustrated... Skateboarding is hard. It's hard for everyone in the beginning... But once you get the hang of it, tricks just become easier to learn because you instinctively know what the board is doing and what it's gonna do.
Just skate as much as you possibly can... And don't be afraid of looking dumb.
Learn good Ollie's and you could become the next Jaws! He's a great skater and half his video parts are just Ollie's!
I don't suggest trying to go super huge like him... Lol... But if you can Ollie while rolling you can Ollie a 3 stair easily. If you can Ollie while rolling even normal speed, you can Ollie a 6 stair easily. It's just scary being in the air that long... But you absolutely can do it whether you realize it or not!!!!!
Just skate, skate, skate. It will come to you eventually I promise - and the more you say "fuck it I might fall but I won't die" the faster you will learn!
Always stay positive, even when you slam and hurt yourself.
A good slam is a badge of honor!!!
(I'm over 30 so old af)

So, what if your shoulders are square and the board still turns. I'm just getting back into skating after almost 20 years. I've videoed myself, I used something to hold on to like a low fence, changed my feet. I know it's usually a problem with opening the shoulder. But, if that is what is happening to me, I can't see where. It feel like the board and my feet turn out from under me and I have to turn to keep up. Don't know. I'll keep working on it though.

How long does the progress daily gear usually take to ship? I ordered some a week or so ago and can’t wait to get it but noticed there’s no tracking available.

hey hill! my bday [23] is on Wednesday and I want to know if I'm too old to get into skatetricks.. I can ride comfortably and I'm athletic but what's it gonna take to "progress daily" and get my first kickflip?

I found that in order to level out while moving I actually have to slightly dip my front shoulder into it once I’m in the air (not when on the ground). I don’t think I’m actually dipping it with respect to the ground, but pushing them back level to the ground by dipping. At a certain point it starts to feel like my upper body is leading the ollie for a split second when I’m moving really fast (~7mph). Then the board catches back up with my body because I dipped my shoulder into it. At the end of the day it’s all about commitment though, and finding what works out the weird kinks for you.
