I think it's tough calling Scott Pilgrim the best Beat em' Up of its time when Dragon's Crown was kicking around, but after looking at the channel doesn't seem Top Hat knows about that one, must be its platforms exclusivity or something. Since I saw the trailer a few weeks ago for this game's release, I just knew Top Hat Gaming Man would be doing a great video about it. I just didn't know it would be so soon! I'm glad I was wrong on that regard.
I was so happy Super Shredder was the final boss. I've played through the Story Mode with each character. This game definitely hits all the nostalgia notes. Please do a video on Fight'n Rage. And have you played Dawn of the Monsters? It's basically Streets of Rage 4 with Kaiju lol
The shoot 'em up observation suddenly makes so much sense! Konami were one of the KINGS of the horizontal shooter back then, of course they would use that kind of know-how and apply it to their beat 'em ups!
It's so wonderful to see some of these genres of the past returning better than ever. It makes you wonder why people ever gave up on them to begin with. Maybe I've been bitten by the nostalgia bug of age, but I've been playing a fair few Megadrive ROMs lately, and while there are certainly some that aren't as great as I remember, there are far more than I expected that not only hold up, but in some ways outshine modern day games, which goes to show that if you get the gameplay right, the limits of technology really don't matter at all.
This game is great! As a kid one Christmas morning me and my brother got Turtles in Time and we played all it all day. We played Turtles 2 in the arcade and Turtles in Time. Now me and my brother live so far apart but my goal is to get us together to play again like we did as kids. Great review Top Hat. Big Up. Yeeah!
This game is such a gem ! I bought it yesterday, already finished it, but can't wait to level up my characters in the story mode. Little nugget : The main character concept artist here is legendary Paul Robertson, an austrian animator, who was none other than... the chara-designer and animator of Scott Pilgrim Vs the world. And before that, he was already worldwide famous for his 2 animation shorts Pirate Baby Cabana's battle street fight in 2006 and Kings of Power 4 Billions% from 2008 (I highly urge you to go watch them ! They're part of animation's history), where you can already tell the guy is an absolute monster in pixel-art beat'em all spritework (and pretty sure these 2 shorts were the ones that landed him the job on Scott Pilgrim). From an animator's point of view, I'd argue this man is the one that single-handedly spearheaded the Renaissance of the 2D beat'em all genre in the 2000's ! When I saw his name in the end credits, I was like "Oh !? But of course ! Who else !!?"
The fact they got the 4 original voice actors from the 80’s cartoon show to reprise their roles as the turtles in the game was enough to buy this game!
Yes, back when I was in elementary school and my mother decided to keep me in school in the place where she worked (while we lived over 25 miles away), sometimes we'd get there early and she would allow me to play the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game at a store that had it.
just goes to show, consumers dont get tired of things, they get tired of _terrible_ things. give people a good game in any genre and they will eat it up. drop some shovelware in their lap, regardless of genre, and most will wretch.
I love how you mention these are the best beat-em-up arcade games we had in years, yet the arcades don't have anything. Sad. I know with EXA and all that, but the industry would rather keep spitting tickets out at some overpriced D&B's, while all the good stuff really is coming home. Now somebody please build a 6-player cabinet.
Scrolling beat em ups and one on one fighting games were my favourite genres back in the 80's & 90's. Loved the Turtle games, Double Dragon, Final Fight's and Streets Of Rage games. The Punisher and Captain Commando arcade game were awesome too!!. Then companies started making half arsed crap 3D fighting ones. Sprite based games never lose their charm, 3D counterparts although can look great don't hold up in the same way. I hope more companies start make more of these types but put in the effort. With the technology these days they could do far more fluid animation, lots more moves, characters and levels. REMAKE FINAL FIGHT!!!.
TMNT Shredders Revenge is my favorite game of 2022 because of bangin soundtrack, super sweet pixel art graphics, tight controls and solid combat made this one of my favorite beat'em ups for the modern era, easily top SOR4 by a good mile which also another solid beat'em up too. Thanks for the video Top Hat

Played to level nine by myself then jumped into a multiplayer stream someone I know had on. Aaaand we ended up finishing it haha, with 4-6 players for most of the time too. There were constant connection issued and drop-outs but it was pretty easy to jump back in with folks mid level. Having six players unleash special attacks at the same time against a boss is an amazing experience haha, like Smash Bros but a beat'em up. Good stuff, very much enjoying it and the entire thing oozes style and personality.
I'm so pumped this game has received universal praise and love! Just goes to show 2D games, beatem ups or otherwise, are here to stay and if it ain't broke don't fix it! Absolutely proud to see this game and other excellent retro games flourish!!!
The major appeal to all beat 'em ups were the cartoon like graphics. Finally we have the technology to make them even more like an interactive cartoon. Love it!
They deserve the Golden Pizza Slice for adding the Rising Attack -> Dive -> Rising Attack ... making clearing a screen of air enemies the pleasure that it should be Also let's not forget Rat Kings stage music gets another GPS
I think the Scott Pilgrim vs The World game, Streets of Rage 4 and this game proved side scrolling beat-em-ups are still popular. Some others I would love to see come back with a sequel are… Final Fight X-Men (based on X-Men ‘97) Ninja Baseball Batman (let me dream!)
Don't forget the exceptional Dragon's Crown, which was basically the best Golden Axe game ever made and possibly the best Beat 'Em Up ever. Heck, Vanillaware's other Beat 'Em Ups, Muramasa Rebirth since Odin Sphere Liefthrasir, are too shelf, of you don't mind them being single player only.
Everyone and I mean EVERYONE I watch who has a gaming channel is playing and talking about this game showering it with praises!! Well earned BTW: the gameplay, sprite-work and overall fun factor is top notch!
I watched Darius Truxtons play through yesterday. I prefer to watch channels like him first because he'll tell you the truth it's a great game but not without its flaws. He has no financial incentive and he's an old school gamer
Yep magnum opus indeed. If they wanna draw inspiration from releasing future character dlcs to complete fan’s “toy collection” they should check out TMNT Rescue Palooza.
As a beat em up fan I've seen plenty on steam go un noticed. The unique thing here is 6 players, and the popular IP, and the actual effort out into it. If we can get all 3 things I think the game will be successful. But getting all 3 is pretty rare.
You pronouncing 'François' with a hard 'c' is the most British thing ever. I'm British/French Canadian, so I'm exactly halfway between worlds on this one and that gaffe made me laugh out loud.
I wouldn't say it's "better" than SoR4, but it's definitely more accessible. SoR4 requires more skill to play, especially on the harder difficulties. That being said, I love both games equally. Playing arcade mode online is the next best thing to walking into an arcade and popping a quarter in to join an ongoing game. So fun!!
I love this game. I hope they make another one or dlc levels and characters. I bought it digital on my xbox and ps4 and have physical versions on preorder as I don’t want to ever lose these games to license rights. I love it and want to also show my support. I would consider getting a Arcade 1up machine if they added this to the original arcade games in one cabinet.
thank god the beat n' up genre is getting a revival. that's good even for me. i want to create my own beat n' up game, but i don't know much about game developing , i'm going to learn these topics by myself. I even have the character designs and the plot ideas but i need to put them on the paper and learn how do draw too. this will be tough but it's a personal challange.
Double Dragon SO needs a (decent) treatment like this. Updated moves and music with dynamic levels and enemies. But so afraid of it going the way of Battletoads.
I have to say that April & Casey Jones are my favorite characters to play. I've played with the Turtles & Splinter of course. But the way April & especially Casey fight, their moves, combos are slammin!! :)
Not a huge fan of beat em ups, but in the right hands and with the right direction they can become more appealing for casual fans like me, who had their fair share of fun with Golden Axe, Streets Of Rage 1 and 2, Final Fight 1 and 2, Original Battletoads and Battletoads and Double Dragon, Fighting Force for PSOne, Comix Zone on Genesis and off course last but not least ALL of TMNT games for both Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo! (I don't remember how much there were, but i remember playing at least two of them for sure on Genesis!)...there were also a couple of Superhero themed beat em ups, one was with Spider-Man (also on genesis), i think one or two were with Batman and some X-Men game too, forgot the title! All of them were fun enough for me to stick and play them for a while, but tend to get boring too fast, especially if i had nobody else to play it with...But i don't get bored of "Shredder's Revenge" and "SoR4" as fast as i was getting bored with old beat em ups, because they modernized these franchise to have way more content and have way more replay value!...I'm still trying all those extra achievements and unlockables in Shredder's Revenge and still cannot do many of them even after playing for nearly a month now!...
I just downloaded this game today and I am thoroughly impressed. They knocked this one out the park. They really paid homage to the original classic turtles games that I remember growing up.
Cool game. It's like a renaissance of beat 'em up games. At a recent steam festival, I played the demo of another potentially good game - Arnold Bounty Hunter. It looks more like the first Battletoads - there are not only fights, but also various adventures with platforming, hydrocycles. It also looks interesting.
I do glad this game was not able talk the talk but walk the walk as well and with the technology today it made it possible that the Beat'em up genre isn't dead. I would like to see a Batman the animated series as a beat'em up or the X -Men animated series too either or I'll be down for that.
The Brawler/Beat-Em Up Genre is amazing, most recent games just do a poor job of making the game right, Pixel Art may be the best way to go rather than trying to make everything 3D or stylized drawing graphics. the new SOR's story was quite lacking but was one of the best game play wise in many years. Looking forward to getting my physical copy of Shredder's Revenge whenever they finally ship out.

That pixel art is amazing. Looks so much better than the recent streets of rage
As a beat em up fan I've seen plenty on steam go un noticed. The unique thing here is 6 players, and the popular IP, and the actual effort out into it. If we can get all 3 things I think the game will be successful. But getting all 3 is pretty rare.
This game was made with love, care and it was made for me. If you feel the same way, we are Brothers.
You pronouncing 'François' with a hard 'c' is the most British thing ever. I'm British/French Canadian, so I'm exactly halfway between worlds on this one and that gaffe made me laugh out loud.
I am very good at ruining people's names - but it was 3am so I was even better at it than normal!
So fun!!
I would say it’s the “best” beat-em ups EVER! 🤔
Now We’re just waiting for that Cowabunga Collection (yeeaaahhhh!)
I'd like a Survival, Versus and Boss Rush modes, then it'll be THE perfect turtle game! ;)
Just played this with my daughter! It was fun and played for hours!!! We did the same for Streets of Rage.
Darn it , was the like just after the EVIL-NUMBER , , darn 👿🎃👿
You couple a beat ‘em up with RPG elements and you have a masterpiece. Eyudin Chronicles, Shredders Revenge, SOR4 and that mode on Tekken 3.
thank god the beat n' up genre is getting a revival. that's good even for me.
i want to create my own beat n' up game, but i don't know much about game developing , i'm going to learn these topics by myself. I even have the character designs and the plot ideas but i need to put them on the paper and learn how do draw too.
this will be tough but it's a personal challange.
First Streets of Rage, then TMNT!
That's 2 for 2 incredible titles by this company and everyone involved.
Next up, Double Dragon!
Double Dragon SO needs a (decent) treatment like this. Updated moves and music with dynamic levels and enemies. But so afraid of it going the way of Battletoads.
April was doing the "Two pointing Soyjaks"? *chefs kiss*
Beat em ups are alive and well
💪😎
💯
2:22 that describes nintendo sooo perfectly.
Bring on the retro beat em up revival. I hope they revive X Men and Aliens vs Predator one day 🙏
I suspected you would be reviewing this game, and you delivered!
I have to say that April & Casey Jones are my favorite characters to play. I've played with the Turtles & Splinter of course. But the way April & especially Casey fight, their moves, combos are slammin!! :)
May this be as much of a watershed for the genre as Doom 2016 was. Revived Golden Axe and Final Fight please.
Imagine a game just like this but with Marvel or DC characters
I just downloaded this game today and I am thoroughly impressed. They knocked this one out the park. They really paid homage to the original classic turtles games that I remember growing up.
GAME OF THE YEAR! 2D is back....I'm so tired of 1st person shooters
God I'd love to see them do X-men next!
I’ll second that!
Best TMNT game and arguably best beat em up game of all time.
Cool game. It's like a renaissance of beat 'em up games. At a recent steam festival, I played the demo of another potentially good game - Arnold Bounty Hunter. It looks more like the first Battletoads - there are not only fights, but also various adventures with platforming, hydrocycles. It also looks interesting.
I love love love tmnt and this game.
Streets of Rage 4 still did it better
This game is a masterpiece. They hit it out of the park.
This game was everything I hoped for.
I do glad this game was not able talk the talk but walk the walk as well and with the technology today it made it possible that the Beat'em up genre isn't dead. I would like to see a Batman the animated series as a beat'em up or the X -Men animated series too either or I'll be down for that.
I love all the konami era stuff .. but the new stuff takes the best elements of those games and give us every inovation of the genre
Now if they can bring back the X-Men arcade. Also do you think the TMNT game is better then streets of rage 4?
"Dubious Star Wars games" shows footage of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
It has always been great and with the new tech you can play with these sprites.
SoR4 uses art and it works.
I really hope that Super Shredder is added as an unlockable character in this game.
They got the freaking wu tang clan to make a song freaking 🔥
Tribute games needs way more recognition.
