ThresherFishing I did commercial fishing for 25 years. We were harvesting grass shrimp out of the South Bay San Francisco Bay. We sold the shrimp to bait shops all around the Bay Area. Many a time I had to deal with bat Rays Stingray. The biggest one I've ever seen in that we caught in Our net. What's close to 5 feet wide. The biggest sturgeon we caught was over nine feet long. We were using a beam trawl net. The boat was a converted Minesweeper from the Vietnam era it had a 32 inch diameter prop. I was working for one of my best friends. Unfortunately he passed away.
Boy does that remind me when I went fishing at Padre and I had an Uncle that had property at a place called,” Rattlesnake Point”. We use to catch stingray’s and always hated to get one on your line. I remember how they would hug the sand and then you could hardly get them in. We would have to kind of pull the line taut and then letting it go and sometimes it would get them loose. Thanks again for all the good memories. David
Hey dude, what size weight did you use on your medium rod when you bagged that ray? Looking into getting that combo but really want to know the heaviest weight without having it affect the cast.
do you have any recommendations for rod and reel combos for beginners? I'm looking into getting a pole for surf fishing here in cali, not looking to spend a whole lot since nearest beach is 2hrs away from me.
I think the Okuma Tundra would be a good starter. $40 for 10' combo on amazon right now. Do be warned do, its a fiberglass rod so its more on the hefty side and it has a pretty "Standard" reel it will last but don't expect it to be unbreackable. Another option would be the Pursuit II combos but they are more pricey but also are built stronger. Just depends on how much your willing to spend
I'm a landlubber. Got on a party boat in Destin and watched my brother tie terminal tackle with the crew while I ate one of three burritos for an early morning breakfast (okay, three of three burritos) washed down with a Foster's oil can on the way to the fishing grounds. "Yer gonna git sick." Nope. I was also drinking Ginger Ale with TINCTURE OF GINGER. It fixes motion sickness so you can fish in the motion of the ocean. Also, helping the crew tie tackle, correctly, doesn't hurt. Tight lines all.
Not ideal, but stomach acids will dissolve the hook eventually. I always use barbless hooks or semi-barbless even when sea fishing if I expect to return my catches.
Folks in here raggin on this guy for leaving a hook in have either no clue or simply not fished long enough to know that when a fish gets gut hooked, you're more likely to kill it by trying to remove the hook. Better off cutting the line and setting it free or putting it out of its misery then cooking it up..
Yes, Rays are "edible"...as are rattlesnakes, Pufferfish and Almonds for that matter (all being poisonous)...but rays and skates are great to eat, the meat is dense...call me crazy but I think it tastes like fish/lobster..point being they are delisious
We fished the incoming tide from the surf/rocks @Half Moon Bay California with 12foot fishing poles & hip waders for Sea Trout, Sea Perch. The hook typically hooked on their lip & easily & quickly extracted the #4 hook. Bait was Pile worms flown in from Maine. Nothing more tasty then same day fried fish. Was rare for us when a fish swallowed the hook. Might be worth a try to cover its eyes with a rag, use needle nose pliers to wiggle the hook out.
Good Channel enjoy your fishing shows I ran across this one and it brought back old memories from when I live there in 1970 greatest place ever back then there was only two buildings on the whole island you can camp on the beach and nobody was there thank you for bringing back the old memories
Fun Facts... Stingray Point (Virginia) gets its name from the 17th century when Captain John Smith was stung on the point by a stingray while fishing.[2] Smith was seriously injured by the sting, and even gave orders to his men as to the disposal of his body. However, he was saved when Native Americans provided a cure, found at a nearby creek, now known as Antipoison Creek.
southern rays twice this size are good to eat.. remove the wings, skin, remove meat from gristle, cut into 1"x1" pieces, bread, deep fry and eat. tastes like scallops.
5winder could be! in the south I learned that if you sharpened the edge of a piece of s.s. tubing in a diameter of choice you can use it to punch out round "scallops" all day long.
They are very dangerous. My buddy took a spike all the way through his forearm. It was like 1/4 second. Very fast and very powerful. He was 2 weeks in the hospital and $40k in medical bills.
uncletigger of course man lol Visited NZ last November and went to Auckland then Christchurch Hokitika Wanaka Queenstown and Milford Sound and loved it. You have a wonderful country man!!! Will be back one day.
This was interesting, it's reassuring to me to see a young guy like you enjoying what you do and how you do it. There are so many young people that just do not want to get out and interact with nature. Hope you inspire other young people to get out there and have fun in a good way.
I'm not sure if it's common knowledge or not, but you have to "play the banjo" when a ray settles into the sand. Pluck the line. The vibrations piss it off and get it moving again.
What's up bud? Big fan from San Antonio! My Silverado is not 4x4 and I been dying to get to PINS. Just wondering how far you are able to go down the beach in the mustang?
@ 6:18, right next to the eye you can see an area which l;ooks dented. Grip your fish here. A tail and stinger that short wont reach your hand. You can then use the other hand to carefully remove your hook before return the fish to the water none the worst for wear. Obviously, make sure that its tail is NOT long enough to be able to whip around before you grap a ray of any kind there. Actual skates can be held there really easily and effectively to control them. Unless of course you have caught one of the giant common skate weighing in at 100lb or more.
I hate catching Rays. I always keeps a old tshirt handy. Wet the tshirt, flip the Ray over, and throw it over him. Makes it a lot easier to get the hook out.
No use using the wet towel as the ray can whip it's tail forward and the barb or sting could pierce your hand. Just flip the ray using a plyers and take the hook off. if not just cut off the line.
I caught one at Galveston that never came up. I was fishing with a heavy duty rod and reel. It took a lot of line then broke the line. It put up a big fight.
The normal stingrays like that are hard as hell to land because they stick to the bottom. I was fishing in NJ and was catching large cow rays that pulled line like a shark but could stick to the bottom when they came in close. Made for some tough fights!
We get em up north here too, very little problem, can gently step on them once beached, just handle from the front and getting barbed is'nt really an issue, i've always gotten them back in the water alive, unharmed, and never got stung.
Dude, I grew up in Corpus Christi fishing with my dad and his friends at PINS on past the 4WD to the end in the 70's. I am now 52. Down at what we then called Big Shell and Little Shell, we would hook up on monsters Ray's with 5' plus wing span. But, good job on the baby there Skippy!
Ever heard of nitro poles? It's a popular choice for conventional reel fishing out here in hawaii, they're great shorecasting poles too with the right setup
I surf fish in DE pretty often and use primarily squid for bait. I usually catch a ton of small sharks and rays like this that are considered “trash” fish by most of the locals as most people don’t eat rays. I enjoy catching them because they are powerful as hell and put up one heck of a fight. For me it’s pretty much all about the sport.
Always bring a 2x4 or 2x6 when you go salt fishing so not if, but when you catch a ray you can simply put the wood on its tail, and step on it preventing the barb from getting to you. Its also a hell of a lot easier to flip them on their back when removing the hook.
You did the right thing. Stingrays are a delicacy in South East Asia. We chopped off the tail first then take the wings which have the most flesh. They're from the shark family with no bones only cartilages. Many marine and aquatic centre have shallow ponds for people to pat the stingrays which is a stupid thing to do as they are wild animals and unpredictable. Remember how Steve Irwin died? The celebrity from Australia.
I do alot of surf fishing on the Treasure coast big Jacks, Snook and sharks. For sharks I use 30lb test with 80lb leader which can handle sharks up to about 150lbs without problem anything over 30lb mono I can't cast well. Great videos
Love your videos, because you are a great Angler! And the best is that you save the live of that fishes. This is really sportfishing at its best! By the way, when i see those fearful helpless eyes of the StingRay, i fell happy that you give him back to its home - we know, he will survive with the hook :) Thank You !!! Great video. Cheers, Frank ( Germany )
You should go do some fishing in carl joe gayman bridge by highway 48 there some good snooks and trouts rightnow and i even do some night fishing there to i take my genarator with some lights .
I'm pretty sure they evolved that way ,millions of years before there was any angling . I've heard they taste like scallops . I would not put my fingers anywhere near the tail and I wear ray guards. I once was hit by a dorsal fin on a small hard head in the middle of my palm , within an hour I could no longer fish and my forearm looked like popeye's . Much pain and ache . Thanks for the location ! Near Corpus Crispy .
im from southeast ga and stingrays definitely have no problem grabbing fresh bait but one thing for sure is if anybody says that a stingrays are not a nice fish to fight has never had one on their line!
Sometimes you can see on the waves where there are sand banks. You want to put your bait between sand banks, or at the foot of sand banks on the far side. That's a good place to start at least. Food items congregate in low spots, so little fish stand there, and thus big fish come there to get some too.
A few hours away from where I live the locals talk about what they call "car bonnet rays", they call them that because they are literally the size of car bonnets (pretty self-explanatory). I hooked into one of them when I was there, it went on a single massive run and after pulling out probably 150m (500 feet) of line it eventually broke me off, I'm confident that it would have spooled me if it didn't break off. Yes, stingrays do fight a lot, but I also think they are really boring to fight. All they do is go for one or two big runs, plant themselves into the sand, and then you drag them back in. They're pretty boring but super strong fighters.
When you come to Arizona, check out the aquatic attractions. East Valley has Odysea and Dolphinaris. West Valley has Wildlife World Zoo and down the Interstate 10 near Picacho Peak is the Rooster Cogburn ranch that features ostriches, lorikeets(?) and stingrays that you can hand feed! Heck of a desert state! After all that, go to the south end of Tucson and be awestricken at the Pima Air and Space Museum. P.S.: I love my native state!
YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS, Phoenix is one of the biggest shit holes in America. That track home hell hole is the last place you should be telling anyone to go to.There is nothing original about that flat hot parking lot. The land is awsome but thanks to shit holes like Phx there ain't much left. The Mexican food sucks all there is in that place are circle k Quik trips and mini malls. It is the most depressing place I've ever been. This dude is at the ocean and you're telling him he should visit that stucco hell hole. Let me cut you off at the pass before you bring up Mills mall or ASU,they equally suck! You should be telling people to visit northern AZ where there's still some real land to look at.
tips ...Well! You sure set me straight. I now hate my native state. Don't forget, always end your sentence in a preposition. Concentrate completely on your depression. Let it work its magic. When you can't stand life any longer, emulate Susie.
Truth is the ray doesn't have teeth, you can even pick it up by the mouth. if the hook has been swallowed, you will kill it trying to remove it. Cut the line as close to the rays mouth as possible. Hooks will rust and fall apart after a few weeks. He's just being as carful as he can and doesn't want anything to do with his tail.
I watch your videos I seen you catch flounders and I want to go and get some myself. so if one day in the future when you have some time and probably help me find a hotel for me my wife and son to stay. and help us get some flounder and bring it to Minnesota. Which state are you fishing in?
I liked the casual thinking out load coaching. Much to be learned by those who will hear. Not opposed to eating 'rays but I would consider debarbing stingrays where swimming is prevalent . Also, they can fight like a borrowed mule!
Yes a big stingray fights harder than a 4 ft shark. Like they said earlier flip upside down using the leader for a clean unhook. Then with your hands from the head area flip right side up and he's good to go. Nice VID tnx
Never do that, you will damage its internal organs as they have no bones, only cartilage like a shark. Best way is to either handle it with the leader to get it out of the surf or simply stick your hand in its mouth and pull it out by the upper jaw. They typically don't have sharp teeth so it wont hurt you and the ones with teeth will have ones like course sand paper. The stinger location is also not far up enough on the tail to come over its head and sting you except the small ones, their tails are disproportional so they can (
Patrick Martin no that's not true. Yes on the flat boney mouth but no on strength. Even large rays have weak jaws. Best way to save a beached large ray is to put hand in mouth n drag it.
Those little whiting are the best eating. You do NOT have to scale them. Just gut them, spice, and deep fry them. The scales turn into the best tasting crunchy batter ... omg! NOT bait, just good fish to eat. And yes you want to catch many and eat like fish on a cob. :) I live on North Padre Island buddy. Let me know when you on the beach... lol i would love to see me in a video. :)
The fish swallowed the circle hook beyond the esophagus. Extraction was not possible.
ThresherFishing dont let all these people crying about that hook get under your skin.
ThresherFishing you have never truly fished til you gut hook one. Happens to all of us
ThresherFishing I love to see someone from here to make videos again. We love Port A.

I got hit by a ray on the side of my foot, just behind the arch. You can still see the black spot. That was somewhere around 45 years ago.
Boy does that remind me when I went fishing at Padre and I had an Uncle that had property at a place called,” Rattlesnake Point”. We use to catch stingray’s and always hated to get one on your line. How may break blocks are on in your penn fathom 30? Do you think it is also good to use on pier? Im about to get one with same size.
4. Yeah it's good. No mag brakes though.
ThresherFishing but centrifugal break help?
on day use a taco or burger or burrito as bait xD
Hey dude, what size weight did you use on your medium rod when you bagged that ray? Looking into getting that combo but really want to know the heaviest weight without having it affect the cast.

Does your "Medium Rod" happen to be a Penn Squadron? I have one but I cannot find a good reel for it
Andrew C. Penn battle 2 or maybe daiwa bg series?
That's what I thought but it has the same stripes near the foregrip as the Squadron II
I'm a landlubber. What rig and bait do you use to catch that whiting?
Not ideal, but stomach acids will dissolve the hook eventually. I always use barbless hooks or semi-barbless even when sea fishing if I expect to return my catches.
What rig do you have on your big rod?
what did you use to snag the whiting?
What kind of set-up do you use on your mid rod
It's a modified bat wing on a left handed Arizona rig with a cats claw tied to a beetle buster on the turnstile.
Hello Thresher....What is the length of the rod and what is the max weight of it?
Folks in here raggin on this guy for leaving a hook in have either no clue or simply not fished long enough to know that when a fish gets gut hooked, you're more likely to kill it by trying to remove the hook. Better off cutting the line and setting it free or putting it out of its misery then cooking it up..
TWENTY EIGHT sting ray is good eating?
TWENTY EIGHT true
Stingray is edible? I'd rather not mess with it in the kitchen because of that poison it has.
Yes, Rays are "edible"...as are rattlesnakes, Pufferfish and Almonds for that matter (all being poisonous)...but rays and skates are great to eat, the meat is dense...call me crazy but I think it tastes like fish/lobster..point being they are delisious

Hey man, what weight sinker do you use on your Falcon?
Had to get the s197 in a shot. Where you located? Love to fish some of your spots
Is your main line mono in the spinning rod and reel the one that caught the stingray
Good Channel enjoy your fishing shows I ran across this one and it brought back old memories from when I live there in 1970 greatest place ever back then there was only two buildings on the whole island you can camp on the beach and nobody was there thank you for bringing back the old memories
Is that padre island by corpus or south padre in the valley
what kind off kayak do you use
Do you say wijting or whiting? Because here in the netherlands it is wijting
Whiting.

That’s stupid money for the medical profession to obtain just cause they can ,,,,,,,,,,there for you and I ha ha bloody ha
@uncletigger People generally fear what they don't understand. Sounds like you got treated well. What country are you from?
uncletigger yeah but you don’t have freedom in New Zealand and we have all the freedoms and democracies here in US
uncletigger of course man lol
Visited NZ last November and went to Auckland then Christchurch Hokitika Wanaka Queenstown and Milford Sound and loved it. You have a wonderful country man!!! Will be back one day.
So you got to sit on your ass for a week, on the tax payers dime, and you're bragging about it ???
I have that same reel, what size is yours mine is the 6000

I am going Southern California near LA and I will be shore fishing do you have any recommendations with lures it any tips
Hmm Cali surf is a lot different from ours.
I really like your fishing segments...they are fun, and you don't swear and curse... Thank you!
What do you fish at SPI and if so where and is it good for this time of year?
Is it normal for rays to come in really shallow like where the waves hit the beach because while I was in port a they would do that
Dude, omg, I just saw your video of you at Boerne Lake. I live in Boerne. Well, Berghiem. That's so cool. Do you live in Boerne or in Corpus?
I live in corpus right now.
Cool, I went fishing at Bob Hall Pier. It's not that far from there at all. Cool to see your videos and keep up the good work!
I'm not sure if it's common knowledge or not, but you have to "play the banjo" when a ray settles into the sand. Pluck the line. The vibrations piss it off and get it moving again.
You drag it back out with the hook set?
Did you get the hook out of it? It looks like you are removing the hook, but then it still has a line in when you drag it out?
The ray swallowed the circle hook unfortunately.
ThresherFishing. Why didn't you eat it ? What's the point of fishing if you don't eat it ?
There is a saying limit your kill and don't kill your limit
Porkchop's Papi because he likes to catch and release
+Lunar Empire. So now this fish is trying to survive with a hook in it's guts. Wounding an animal for fun. That's just great.

What's up bud? Big fan from San Antonio! My Silverado is not 4x4 and I been dying to get to PINS. Just wondering how far you are able to go down the beach in the mustang?

I too live in Delaware at the beach.
I catch a lot of skates and rays.
Dogfish also in the bay.
How come your line went from brade to mono when you where fighting the stingray
Braid backing with mono for too shot?
Nice video brotha , I'm gonna be out there this Friday night surf fishing for whatever hits my line, most definitely going to watch out for them rays!
Always bring a 2x4 or 2x6 when you go salt fishing so not if, but when you catch a ray you can simply put the wood on its tail, and step on it preventing the barb from getting to you. Its also a hell of a lot easier to flip them on their back when removing the hook.

And while you're busy trying to be a teacher take your ass outside oh but that's right there's a heat advisory warning you can't go outside
That noise you made when you cast the first time lmaooo
what kayak do you use and by the way your the reason why i love fishing so much and i watch your videos everyday
Thanks brother. I have the old version of the ascend fs12t. They don't make it anymore.
+ThresherFishing thanks man and tight lines brother
Truth is the ray doesn't have teeth, you can even pick it up by the mouth. if the hook has been swallowed, you will kill it trying to remove it. Cut the line as close to the rays mouth as possible. Hooks will rust and fall apart after a few weeks. He's just being as carful as he can and doesn't want anything to do with his tail.
hi does anyone know a good beach where I can do some surf fishing and run around truck and probably park there to some camping
Where?
in Florida
or in Texas
juan inocente I don't live in either places but if you want some good scenery you can probably hit the keys in florida
I watch your videos I seen you catch flounders and I want to go and get some myself. so if one day in the future when you have some time and probably help me find a hotel for me my wife and son to stay. and help us get some flounder and bring it to Minnesota. Which state are you fishing in?
Your vids are the best, I live in Oklahoma, do I need fishing license to fish in Texas
Yes
Rays fight like hell. Physics is real. If you can fight a big ray, you can fight anything.
i live in McAllen its like a 1 hour and 30 min away from the beach
South padre island??
I liked the casual thinking out load coaching. Much to be learned by those who will hear. Not opposed to eating 'rays but I would consider debarbing stingrays where swimming is prevalent . Also, they can fight like a borrowed mule!
Your editing is on point
what rod is this ,it looks like a ugly stik
hardhead remains scariest on those oil beaches, jellyfish, stinkrays, and mantawars
good catch. I love the fight of a big sting ray they fight like hell. good video
hey do you like fishing at the back bay
Good catch ,enjoyed it !
Yes a big stingray fights harder than a 4 ft shark. Like they said earlier flip upside down using the leader for a clean unhook. Then with your hands from the head area flip right side up and he's good to go. Nice VID tnx
Turn Ray upside down to take out the hook.
The stinger location is also not far up enough on the tail to come over its head and sting you except the small ones, their tails are disproportional so they can (
Justin van Zyl, they may not have teeth but those bony plates that can crush clam shells are not a place you want to put your hands.
Rudy Casias, I'm with you on this one.
Rudy Casias use pliers.
Patrick Martin no that's not true. Yes on the flat boney mouth but no on strength. Even large rays have weak jaws. Best way to save a beached large ray is to put hand in mouth n drag it.
Make sure you drag your feet on the bottom... they usually stab you when you step on 'em.
whats your fishbrain name ?
Those little whiting are the best eating. You do NOT have to scale them. Just gut them, spice, and deep fry them. The scales turn into the best tasting crunchy batter ... omg! NOT bait, just good fish to eat. And yes you want to catch many and eat like fish on a cob. :) I live on North Padre Island buddy. Let me know when you on the beach... lol i would love to see me in a video. :)
Thank you for the great ideas on your videos. I go to Corpus Christi twice a year just to fish.
