Honestly the one of the most heartbreaking moments in this game was when Kandori was about to die in the cave and Nanjo offered him a chance to escape - a chance at life again - a chance to not make the mistakes he did and he refused. He knew from the start he should’ve never been brought back from the dead and needed to pay for what he did. His comments throughout the game about how him and tatsuya were essentially in a similar boat really stuck with me. I was hesitant on the addition of Kandori but everytime we see him he just seems really out of it. Nanjo doesn’t push Kandori anymore about it but god it hurt. Especially with Chizuru and Kandori die and there’s that moment of silence afterwards and the game continues on. It’s really cool to see how much Nanjo has matured from the original persona game. While some people may think the characters in p1 weren’t fleshed out too well, I really did become fond of Nanjo after his promise to his butler to become the best man he can be. From what we saw Alfred was basically Nanjos mom /dad he had nothing else. Learning how to live without that support and going through everything he did in p1/ep i can’t imagine what that was like. Even if he was rich money can’t solve everything or buy back the dead...
I absolutely love the darker, almost Lynchian tone of the older SMT games. One thing I didn't quite like about Persona 4/5 is the more light-hearted anime-like tone. Don't get me wrong, they're great games on their own merit but there was something really special and mysterious about the classics.
It's kind of funny that 4 and 5 are both M and do have some intense moments, but they steer clear of any explicit references to sex and drugs beyond average anime standards. I think the themes are just as dark as the older games, but the style and dialogue seem a little kiddy and it kind of waters it down. I guess they're trying to grab a more mass appeal audience, but it's kind of weird. I get it though, Persona pretty much keeps Atlus open these days.

It remains quite dark and grim like the older games in some regards but it's also the point where the more "anime-y" stuff was introduced -social links, aesthetic, etc. It's a great game I have fond memories of it, especially the PSP version.
@@89Dustdevil yeah you're right, it's definitely a move by atlus -and a smart one at that- to appeal to a wider audience. And it proved to be really successful in the end so I cannot blame them. SMT games used to be quite "niche" so it's understandable that they try and change things a little bit. Luckily we still have the main SMT games that remain almost the same in terms of tone (although Apocalypse had its fair share of anime tropes here and there)

Ngl, these earlier persona games stories definitely feel as dark as the main line and I hope for the sixth game we get that again, as well an adult cast. Love the anime style but I'd definitely appreciate a darker game story wise
@@blizzred2143 the only dark chapter of Persona 5 was that Kamoshida was a sex offender hired by the school who looked the other way . After they took him out , it was just about a group of teens taking down crooked ass adults that have a lot of influence in the government
Persona 2 being a darker game doesn't necessarily make it not "anime." It's just as anime as the other Persona games, just with heavier subject matter in play

The literal separation point between SMT and modern persona. Reality is fractured and nyarly has his tentacles shoved up so far he still can’t get them out. You’ll notice that Greek, Japanese, and Christian gods have been the antagonists of the last three persona games. With the themes of sacrifice, truth, and rebellion as each games cornerstone idea. Chaos has moved further away with each plot as humanity proves its virtue time after time. Who knows where it could end up next.
the fact that nyarlathotep isn't actively destroying human-world and philemon passing his job to igor are good. give tatsuya a damn break, he stuck at the original timeline alone because nyarlathotep and philemon.

It's a nice little nod that shows that the devs show interest in other systems of mythology apart from Japan's. The Crawling Chaos is a reference to a short story written by some person named Lovecraft, by the way. Not sure if anyone's ever heard of him, though. I love how the PS1 version of Persona 2 uses the same English names from Revelations Persona, kinda makes it like a funny little alternate universe idk.
I would love to see a third game for Persona 2 that follows the original Tatsuya back in his original world, that way we could possibly get the first two parts of the game ported over to the Switch with the same function of transferring over save data between the games, including the possible third game. I'd love to see that third game with Tatsuya attempting to recreate his world back to the way it was, or at least have it livable for humans again.
A 3rd P2 game wouldn't happen because EP was the end of the story. However, new ports would be awesome (with IS using the PS1 stats and maybe change the color of the UI to match the JP PS1 boxarts)
i guess that's why none of the persona 2 teams showed up in persona 3 the first group doesn't remember the events of sin and the second group im not sure why none of them showed up maybe they don't remember either

Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment are the best games in the Series for me! This Rumor System is absolutely brilliant and as a completionist, of course I went hunting for Rumors, in order to get them all, so I can fully benefit from the system. Love it!

Just a small silly note, but the part of Baofu confronting himself and Monado Mandala has two outcomes and him being punched by Katsuya is the bad one iirc. Doesn't change much at the core [accepts his responsibility]. He has a nice chat with Miki + the outcome is different and sweeter with the team accepting him as he is now rather than Baofu trying to shake it off saying it was an act.

I'm playing this game right now (I've gotten to 23:09) - and I must admit that I'm unsure of what's even going on with the plot. Had to watch this video to remind myself of what's going on
ahhhh now I see why it's everyone's favorite persona! after playing innocent sin I had my doubts I won't lie the writing/characters felt very convoluted and didn't do much for me. HOWEVER eternal punishment is much much better.
So maya move on not talking to tatsuya. So did she reject him by moving on or did she not mint to talk to him believing fate will bring them together again? So Tatsuya got rejected or what?
how good is this game? i remember playing innocent sin as a kid and liking it but i replayed it a year ago and i loved it so much but i've never played eternal punishment because i thought innocent sin was wrapped up nicely
And now I am reminded that nothing persona 4 did was original, and the shadow self thing and confronting it was already present in both persona 2 games... and yet people wont stop shouting over how original the shadow selves in p4 were and shit...
Sure, Persona 1 and 2 utilized the shadow selves first, but Persona 4 did place a heavier emphasis and introspective twist to them. The shadow selves in P2 were minor components in the overall narrative, while P4 made them a major focus. Both approaches do work quite well, imo,. Even if I do think P4's narrative isn't quite as strong as the other games, it does deserve credit for what it does well

Can I suggest you do the yakuza series next? Many people want to play it but not the entire franchise as it'd take too long and some of the games (Yakuza 3-5) are just old with outdated game mechanics.

Innocent Sin's ending was made to set up Eternal Punishment, and not as an actual end to the story.
