    How about a smartphone with 3 cameras set up for normal photos, 2x optical zoom, and wide angle lens... that would be cool.

      Why not just have the sensor move between the 3 lenses with a slider rather than putting 3 sensors in the phone

    • @alexanderbarr
      @alexanderbarr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hidenproductions Then you can say goodbye to headphone jack, larger battery, fingerprint scanner and other things. its all about internal hardware space and keeping the thing we like vs the size of the phone vs a bunch of other things.

      Pretty sure some manf have thought about using 3 lenses with only 1 sensor but it would likely not work too well as lens + sensors are precision instruments; to make a mechanical system capable of doing that precisely over x number of actuations would probably be expensive and large

    my biggest frustration of smartphone camera's is not having optical zoom.
    At one point there was a debate if more pixels really are better. And I always supported more pixels just because it gives you the possibility to actually zoom a bit and keep the object sharp. Now with my 12 MP camera of the htc 10 I really miss that. I got used to taking pictures with mij Xperia compact Z3 and keep being dissapionted that even object a meter of 10 away from me are far from sharp.

    Good video, gary. There are/were smartphones with actual optical zoom like a lens on a camera - Asus Zenfone Zoom & a Moto-Z with that Hasselblad Moto Mod thing; and maybe one or two other older models that I don't recall

      Musa Hoosain, I believe the "zoom" for the 1020 is basically high quality cropping from that massive 40MP+ sensor, i.e. digital zoom

    based on my observation, the lens in smartphone actually moves when the camera focusing on object but it is very subtle movement. Try it with smartphone that has manual focus and large aperture. For example, Galaxy S7.

  • @TisICaptainVegetable
    @TisICaptainVegetable 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    1:42 Since the convergence angle changes when the focal length changes, a more accurate magnification ratio might be MR = (f1/f2)*(f2-dObj)/(f1-dObj) as derived from the Thin Lens Equation, instead of just f1/f2. Equivalently, MR = (f2/f1)*(f1-dImg)/(f2-dImg).

    there is a concept for a camera chamber sit inside the phone width with glass reflection and stuffs so it can increase/decrease the length from the lens to the sensor... don't know how long until we get this but it will supposed to be only use single camera and offer a custom zoom magnification level

  • @supernenechi

    My old Sony phone had a camera that when zooming in or focusing would make a sound with the camera. I believe it didn't have a fixed focal point but rather actual optical zoom

    what about those cameras from oppo and gionee which makes a 50 megapixels photo from 13 megapixel sensor..

    • @alpertwang4003
      @alpertwang4003 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Danish Khan that's multiple photo trick... don't be tricked. it's like, I take 10 photos with different ISO and other settings, and add them layer by layer in Photoshop, then I could get a photo with HDR and details from each photo of each setting. Problem is that Oppo's camera is not good enough to produce great photos, it's OK level. Plus the shaky hand and moving object, this type of photo is hard to be perfect.

  • @shawns9070
    @shawns9070 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    While what you have said Gary is mostly true there are a few phones that do not actually fall into exactly what you have said. The Nikon Coolpix S800c for example while technically more a point and shoot camera than phone but it was running full Android and so I believe could have made VOIP/Skype etc calls at least if you used a Bluetooth headset. I also thought there was a Sony phone but I can't see to find it. I think I remember reading on AA a month or 2 ago that one of the unreleased models is going to offer true optical zoom by making a sort of periscope.
    I could see in future that it may also be possible to use the High Res shot mode type technology used in some of the top Olympus cameras to offer more resolution in an image which then could be cropped with less noise etc. I guess in a way they are doing this to an extent now by combining the images from 2 cameras but doing sensor shifting I am sure to give a better result at least when there is nothing moving in the scene.

    The difference between digital zoom (cropping) and optical zoom is compressed perspective created by optical zoom.

    • @PhazonBlaxor
      @PhazonBlaxor 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      How is optical zoom a gimmick? It's very nice thing to have. 2x optical zoom is rather lame though, I'd wish seeing 5x or more and it would be cool if the phone could actually somehow move the optics to produce any focal length between 1x-5x. That might be impossible though with the ultra thin smartphones of today.
