Yeah, a more raw vocalist for sure, I preferred him too! I talked with Jim Durkin for like a week on Myspace, (when that was a thing..lol) and he also preferred Rob Yanhn over Gonzales, with Don on vocals! Evidentially, whatever quarrel the band had with Don, which led to his dismissal didn't affect Jim Durkin's relations with Don! But from what I've heard also, Don was too much of a party animal with booze and drugs and was too chick crazy, at least at a stand point of it affecting his rehearsals and performance with Dark Angel.
One of the best concerts I have ever seen....the brutality and the raw vibe of Dark angel is impossible to capture slayer or other bands back in the days...Darkness descends is the most chaotic thrash metal album of all time... can't wait till play it entirely in 11 July for first time in Hellas ( Greece).
I was still a 4 years old kid watching He-Man on TV at that time, I wouldn't start listening Heavy Metal before 1992, and got in the really mean shit (such as Dark Angel, for instance) by 1999, when these guys were already disbanded. Fortunately they reformed and I got to watch them live 3 times since 2013 (the last time being last week), but when I see the shows of the 80's and 90's of all the heavy, thrash, death and black metal bands, I can't help to think I was born too late!
@@MoreAwsomeMetal I just saw them in LA a few months ago. It was one of the better old school thrash shows of the modern area. They absolutely killed it and the venue allowed everything, stage diving included. It was insane. You never know what you'll get with the "old guys", but there are a few bands that still go all-out, and this is one of them.
0:48 Darkness Descends (Intro) 2:20 We Have Arrived 5:04 The Burning of Sodom 9:26 Welcome to the Slaughterhouse 14:41 Death is Certain (Life is Not) 20:30 Falling from the Sky 24:58 Vendetta 29:03 Hunger of the Undead 33:57 Merciless Death 41:21 Perish in Flames
I saw them twice in 1985. Once with Slayer at Reseda Country Club, and another show at some tiny, gutted out plane hangar (?) in Van Nuys, Ca. The 2nd show was absolutely BRUTAL. Stage was only about a foot high. Literally wall to wall moshing the ENTIRE time, and I mean getting hit with clenched fists while being pummeled by stage divers. Completely immersed. Most insane pit I’ve ever been in. My friend had to go outside. He couldn’t hang. 😂
In the mid-80s I saw Exodus, Possessed, D.R.I. and Death Angel live. Dark Angel was advertised but they didn't play that night. I finally went to see them at Fenders in 1987 but it wasn't Don Doty on vocals. Instead it was the other guy. Sucks I never got to see the only vocalist whoever mattered fronting Dark Angel.
+p4horror I was at that Jan '86 show at Balboa Theatre in LA w/ Exodus, Possessed, DRI and Death Angel too...Yes, Dark Angel did not play. I saw DA in Vegas with Don Doty then again in Summer '87 at the Country Club in Reseda, CA...Sacred Reich just got signed and supported them along with Viking. Glad I got to see them with Don twice before they went downhill.
Kevin Leonard Wasn't that a killer show! LOL! I didn't dig seeing that bouncer socking guys up though when they would slam up the crowd onto the stage. But yeah, that show was awesome, I still remember the details. Possessed was the highlight for me. The way they walked on and Becerra started yelling something out before opening with The Exorcist. That show was intense from start to end. In fact, most thrash shows in the 80s didn't have any filler bands on the bills. I went to shows where Hirax, Voi Vod, Pestilence; etc as the opening bands. Those were some great gigs man.
Yeah, I had to go see the Original Dark Angel at the Troubador! Summer of 1986! They were beyond freakin' glorious, small Club with a Full Bar! Sorry about ALL the "Suicidals" at Fenders, Olympic Auditorium, Sta. Monica Civic!
This was when Gene was still working on the vocal arrangements of the new songs. Don sings the same verse 4 times on Death is Certain and skips the entire first section of the lyrics. I remember soon after this they started playing Black Prophecies live without lyrics. Ended up being a masterpiece of song writing. Good times.
Saw them in late 80's at the Stone in SF, Darkness Descends tour & then few years later at The Cactus club. Got a signed Live Scars poster from the Cactus Club show. Darkness Descends is a masterpiece classic. The lyrics are so fucking well written, I remember reading them from the LP( which I still have)over and over again. Death is Certain, Black Prophecies,Hunger Of the Undead are my favorites. Darkness Descends goes in the top 20 all time best metal albums, maybe even in the top 10. Anyone who says otherwise is prob too young to know how epic this was in it's time or is just a douchebag and deserves to Perish In Flames!!
I used to listen to heavy metal radio show back in the '80s called Midnight Metal. It aired on a radio station based out of New Rochelle, NY. Six hours of heavy metal music every Saturday night! Anyway, Gene Hoglan came in for an interview in the Spring of 1987 (about six months after Darkness Descends came out). Gene said there had been misprint on the Darkness Descends album jacket. The instrumental intro Darkness Descends was actually supposed to listed as a separate track called "Harbinger Of Doom".
I saw Dark Angel at the Stone in San Francisco in 86, I think Vio-lence opened, and it will forever go down in my memory as one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Hung out with Gene and the band for like, an hour after the show, went into a tiny store by the Stone and watched Gene buy all of their pirogies, he offered me one but I hadn’t ever had one and I’m sad that I didn’t take one bc damn they’re delicious

The Big 5: SLAYER, Dark Angel, early Metallica, early Sepultura, Bathory. Anthrax and Megadeth are so freaking overrated.
