    I remember when I houseruled level ups to help my brother get through the quests solo. In the end, his elf turned into an unstoppable juggernaut with a full spell list and a whole bunch of extra body/mind points along with all the best equipment. Good times.

      You're welcome. It's funny how, when I wrote them a couple of months ago for personal use, I had no idea I would end up making a TH-cam channel where I would end up advertising them to other people. When I made the TH-cam channel recently to make tutorials on making custom cards, I briefly mentioned my house rules and got several comments asking for a video to show my house rules. I thought that was a cool idea for another video and the rest is history. 😉

    Thanks for sharing this! I love your deadpan narration style with the occasional humorous quip and jab. These house rules are awesome. I plan to use some of these as well as some of your card ideas. In a discord I'm on we use a house rule where if a hero rolls 3 white shields, or a monster rolls 3 black shields, you get to perform a wrestling move. Roll a combat die and if it comes up a skull you can perform the attack and inflict 1 unblockable damage. It is a modification of the yeti hug rules to break out.

    I like the study mechanic as an idea (one action, no monsters), but I think I will just use a single HQ dice roll: Regain one of the spells on a shield, get a wandering monster on a dread/chaos bunny and nothing for a skull. Shuffle the discarded cards before drawing if there are multiple cards in the discard pile. An additional D6 roll might be a good way to incorporate mind points: roll below (not equal to) mind points.

    • @HeroQuester-gn2oy
      @HeroQuester-gn2oy  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Sounds like a good alternative to messing with custom cards. Originally, when I was coming up with my house rules, I was going to use the red die and the number of mind points kind of like how one escapes a Sleep spell to try to regain a cast spell, but make the action only available if the hero rolls a double for movement and manages to be in a place unseen by monsters.
      Also, for the furniture search house rule, I was planning to use a 12-sided die to look up a value in a table to find out what a hero finds in a piece of furniture. As soon as I found Actionfence's HQCC app and videos on printing cards at home, I went on a card-making spree and changed as many things as I could to be based on custom cards. I probably got carried away, but at least it makes cool content for a TH-cam video. 😁

    • @ScooterinAB
      @ScooterinAB 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I like this a lot more, though I might do it with a black shield getting a spell back, white shields being a wandering monster, and maybe one die per 2 or 3 mind points (for a max of 1 spell or 1 monster). I like the idea of wizards being a little more useless and less resource-starved (the elf can still fight if out of spells), but I wouldn't want this to turn into "and roll every time you cast a spell until you regain it." Risk and reward.

    I like the wandering monster rule. Here are some of ours, using the 1990 release + expansions, nothing modern.
    >Casters roll against mind points on a D12 when casting (at player discretion). If they roll under they get to keep the spell but their mindpoints are reduced by one for the remainder of that quest. This can continue until their mind points are spent. This adds value to the talisman of lore that is otherwise mostly worthless.
    >Movement : Players are given a dex number (as you would expect elf -> dwarf -> barb -> wizard) and can move that, or they can use a d10 to add additional movement - however if they roll a zero they trip and lose all their movement that round. This must be announced before moving.
    >When running the DM can opt to do a wandering monster check since the heros are being noisy. I use tokens to represent monsters out of LOS in this way as they make their way towards the players from other parts of the dungeon. The check could also be used for alerting enemies behind closed doors, so the characters must consider when they do this.
    >Due to the time expenditure for searching for traps I roll wandering monsters on this as well as the usual in the treasure deck.
    I also have a deck of abilities for the barbarian who gains a token for each point of damage taken in combat and can spend these on abilities. Once combat ends (in the same way as courage?) all these tokens are lost. It is not useful for small rooms but in larger fights is pretty fun getting abilities to push, pull agro and do multiple attacks if the character had an additional 1h weapon (giving a reason for the barbarian to have the lighter weapons).

    • @HeroQuester-gn2oy
      @HeroQuester-gn2oy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting. Keeping cast spells at the cost of losing a mind point that help get out of mind spells. More movement at the risk of no movement. More risk of wandering monsters. The barbarian having built-up combat abilities that go away when he no longer sees a monster.
      It would be funny if you had it where, if a hero uses the dex and rolls a 0 that it automatically triggers a wandering monster and/or if the hero uses the dex at all that it had a small risk of triggering a wandering monster.

      I don't know what this means. I own the 90s version, kellars keep and return of the witch lord. Mind points in this content is used.. once? Maybe twice. There are no "mind spells".
      If there was a use for mindpoints I probably wouldn't have used them in this way.

    • @HeroQuester-gn2oy
      @HeroQuester-gn2oy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@joel6376 Oh. By "mind spells," I was just talking about spells like Sleep that affect the mind where you need to escape them by rolling red dice for your number of mind points to break the spell by rolling a 6. I just like to refer to those kinds of spells as "mind spells."
      If you lose mind points, it will make your chances of getting out of spells like Sleep harder as a tradeoff for keeping a cast spell according to your house rule. I thought that was an interesting tradeoff.

    What is the card makeup of the study deck? i.e. how many of each card?

  • @ScooterinAB
    @ScooterinAB 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Prefaced with the fact that I see this as a simple game that should stay a simple game...
    -Selling gear. You can already sell equipment at half the price.
    -Inventory. Generally, you keep the cards for the items you have. Though I do like your idea of printing out extras for common items.
    -Study deck. I don't hate this idea, since HeroQuest is basically entirely about fighting monsters. Unlike a roleplaying game, where a wizard would have other actions they can take and the ability to fight their way out of a wet paper bag, a HeroQuest wizard is kind of a 3-hit wonder. That being said, I'd maybe just include more scrolls as treasure, rather than have the spellcasters stand around forever trying to refresh their spells.
    -Searching. I get where you're going with this. But as with the Study concern, I worry that this would just turn every room into a 15-turn slogfest. There's also accounting to consider, if you need to know which specific items were searched. Might slow things down too much to be worth it, given that you already have a treasure deck that can accomplish much of the same.
    -Furniture. I don't hate this either, though I worry that it's being overcomplicated. I like the line of sight thing, and would like to see more jumping on tables and such. I can maybe leave the rest though, in the interest of keeping gameplay moving.
    -Traps. I'll have to review this, because you touch on a lot of important points.
    -Switching items. I'm a bit less cold on this. While a lot of the assumptions do work, I've never found HeroQuest to be a game where you're carrying around 40 weapons. Aside from the shield thing, I have to wonder how often this would come up.
    -Trading items. We have rules for this as well, and they're less complicated.
    -Unconscious. I like the idea that heroes don't just instantly die and are lost, but I feel like the fragging thing overcomplicates the game. It's also unthematic for monsters to drag dead heroes around instead of monstering.

      You could look at my Custom Cards Tour video th-cam.com/video/p9OYkzY_tNU/w-d-xo.html chapter "Ability Cards - Study" 11:02-14:34, but it's comprised of these 40 cards:
      Study Unsuccessful: 16 cards
      Wandering Monster: 6 cards
      Unlock Mind: 2 cards
      Study Successful: 7 cards
      Study Exhausted: 2 cards
      Spider Bite: 2 cards
      Spell Scroll: 1 card
      Self Healing: 1 card
      Potion: 1 card
      Heal Room: 2 cards
      There wasn't any kind of hard science behind my decisions as to how many of each card other than to try to discourage the wizard and elf from studying often.
      I have yet to play with my comrades since making all these cards and house rules. Once I do, I'd have to figure out how well this works and if I would need to remove some of the cards or change the rules to make it more balanced. At the moment, I have it where the wizard or elf can do this action on any turn her or she can't see a monster, but I also wanted it to be risky so as not to allow them to get too much benefit out of studying all the time. I would hope that they would only study if low on spells and desperate to recover one of them and willing to take the risk. We'll see.

      @@HeroQuester-gn2oy first of all, keep going with the good content man.
      I really appreciate your effort you put into this and on providing the downloads for your house rule cards.
      I played HQ ages ago when i was like in my teens, and now I got a group going again with the new edition and it´s great fun again, I love it.
      Up until now, Wizard was kind of a hazzle to play for most of the group so I searched for newbie friendly possibilities to make the wizard more potent and not only save spells for the biggest monsters.
      I think your houserule on that is the best I have seen so far and we will incoporate it into our next session.
      What I will do ist make the action for one of each room between either you search for treasure or do the study action. By this we can still use the companion app to track the searched/studied rooms for us and limit the amounts the wizard/elf can search. Still I think i have to tune some of those numbers of yours a bit so that it is a little bit (not very) more likely to regain a spell.
      Thanks again man, keep the videos coming :)

    We've implemented a lot of new homebrew rules in my group without making it overly complicated but it can be slightly more difficult should the dice punish you.
    Opportunity attacks: If you try and break away while engaged in combat, the hero/mob gets a free 1 die attack that is not defendable.
    Flanking rule: When 2 or more mobs adjacent to the target, the defender get -1 DEF die against flank/back attacks. So, defender position matters, i.e. which way they are facing.
    Urgency rule: After the first kill of the game, Zargon can roll a 1d6 (in secret). 1/2 = 1 wandering monster, 3/4 = 3, 5/6 = 3. They heard the attack and start at the spiral staircase and head towards kill location. This keeps the heroes moving. Zargon can re-roll when all the monsters are slain. Heroes can also close doors in an attempt trick the wandering mobs. This rule is also Zargon's call. Depending on the quest location or objective and such, he can decide to roll or not.
    Search rule: Heroes have to declare and be next to the item you are searching for treasure or traps. Makes furniture and traps matter in the room.
    Attempt to break down a door for a surprise attack. Each hero has a different skill check. This rule has been a lot of fun with our overconfident barbarian. Failure gives all the mobs in the a room a free move & atk after the attempt. On a success the door flies to the opposite wall, the first monster gets hit and has to defend. Unless it's a goblin. A goblin is immediately crushed under the door.
    Jumping on certain furniture gives you a atk/def bonus, but can also leave you prone for a turn if you fail. Each hero/monster has a different skill check.
    Attacking furniture is also an option. If a hero or monster is standing on the table, you can attempt to destroy the table. Taking away their advantage and causing a little dmg.
    Stealthily open a door for a peek inside. Dwarf/Elf/Rogue only right now.
    We were also thinking about a time or turn limit rule but we haven't fleshed it out yet. I might design a few quests with a turn limit to test it out.
    We also use the half price sell back feature
    There are a couple more I cant recall at the moment. We instituted these rules because the first few games were really boring playing by the normal rules. It was a slaughter and pretty boring with just doing the move/kill/search/move formula. We wanted to spice things up a bit.

      It could be, but it kind of already is when heroes collect a lot of life-saving healing potions that they can use at the moment of death. A rule like the heroes goes unconscious instead if dying could motivate Zargon to be more ruthless against the Wizard without feeling guilty of just being mean, because another hero might be able to revive him, but then try to get all heroes unconscious before that happens.
