- Scenario: As the Kingdom army strengthens its forces, Dimitri and the Blue Lions focus their efforts on capturing the Empire’s strongest defense: the Impregnable Fortress. With the Death Knight as the keep’s commander, Mercedes steels herself as she catches a glimpse of him clad in black armor with a scythe in hand. “Dear Emile… as your big sister, I’ll bring you back to your senses,” she mutters to herself. Family fighting on opposite sides… Mercedes prays the “Profound Ties that Bind” them will be enough for him to stand down. Meanwhile, Dimitri somberly awaits the day when he too must face his family in battle.

Personal Notes: As I mentioned in my last community post, I’ve been working on this since October last year. Initially, I wanted to start working on “Roar of Dominion,” but completing CF really endeared me to Jeritza. Whether it was getting more insight into his childhood to his unexpected (but adorable) sweet tooth, I loved getting to know him as “Emile." Now… I actually didn’t recruit Mercedes (aka his big sister) in CF, but OH MY GOSH I regretted it when I watched Jeritza’s supports with Mercedes because my heart SHATTERED when I learned that Jeritza a) told their mother to escape House Bartels with Mercedes without him because he knew that going with them would cause his father to hunt them down and b) slayed his father after learning that the latter wanted to marry Mercedes (his stepdaughter mind you) to bear more crest babies. It’s sad because Mercedes believed that she abandoned her little brother and that it was her neglect that caused his Death Knight persona. However, all of what Jeritza did was to protect her and their mother. It’s extra sad because Mercedes doesn’t get this kind of closure in AM and witnesses Jeritza’s death with her guilt still intact. So, with the theme of family fighting each other, I knew that “Profound Ties that Bind” would be the song to depict that. As for the lyrics… I do have a couple of tidbits I want to share in the process of writing them:
“Black armor in sight drips with memories/Of winds brushing the roses we’ve tended as three”
• This is a reference to Jeritza’s A support with Constance where he revealed that he used to tend roses with Mercedes and his mother.
“The blue skies above us/Envelop us just like old times”
• Similar to how “blue skies” in “Between Heaven and Earth” was used to refer to memories during the academy, I felt that “blue skies” in “Profound Ties that Bind” can also refer to Mercedes’ memories of fond moments with her little brother.
“But his path is fraught with sleeping the sleep of/Our unyielding swords”
• “Sleeping the sleep of/Our unyielding swords” is a reference from a kenning used in Beowulf. A kenning is a compound or figurative phrase that replaces a noun. “Sleeping the sleep of the sword” is a kenning for “death.” Many thanks to my mythology course for introducing me to kennings XD
“Every fish has to climb”
• Basically Byleth’s version of the phrase “when pigs fly,” which is a phrase used to indicate something as impossible.
“Every rose has its thorns/I’ve been one since I was born
• As we know from Mercedes’ support with Sylvain, Mercedes’ mother remarried Baron Bartels in which they later had a child together. That child was Jeritza. However, because Mercedes’ stepfather only married her mother to have a child with a crest (which Jeritza did have), he basically tossed Mercedes and her mother aside. That’s why I think “roses have thorns” is the perfect figure of speech to encapsulate the circumstances surrounding both the good and bad of Jeritza's birth.
“Your notions of death reeks of memories/Of days brushing off warm hands extended to me”
• I can’t help but wonder what a support between Dimitri and Jeritza would look like since they’re similar in the sense that they both viewed themselves as monsters and are forced to fight their sisters. Dimitri in AM, however, is able to start healing with the help of Byleth’s warm hands and his comrades. Jeritza, on the other hand, does not have anyone he can confide in. It’s really sad the more I think about it.

DUDE what when you said you were writing a FE musical I dunno what I was expecting, I think standalone original lyrics set to Life at Garreg Mach or something, but this was like an excerpt from a full scale production--SO IMPRESSIVE! It's evident your vision for this is HUGE and I can't wait when it's fully realized, it'll be like the best musical audio drama ever. Funny you say that because I jotted down a few lyrics for Life at Garreg Mach last year but haven't gotten anywhere with it. But ahhh thanks 🥹 Still unsure how long I'll keep this project up, but you and everyone else have been so awesome about it. UWOWEORWIHGFOIWUHGUH YEAAAHH Dude this one is soo good!!! Once again GREAT choice of song for this part, the title is so applicable still. I love these parallels you're drawing, using Mercedes vs Jeritza as a sort of foreshadowing device for Edelgard vs Dimitri and how he feels about that upcoming conflict... You've got such a strong grasp on this story and characters, and translating that into lyrics this good is so incredible. Amazing job once again!

I’m SO happy to see this amazing Emile and Mercedes content. Their backstory is so tragic, and I’m so glad they got to reconnect in CF after everything they went through. Their sibling bond is really beautiful, especially how Mercie keeps reaching out despite Emile thinking he’s not worthy. I was absolutely GUTTED by Jeritza’s death scene in AM (I played it after CF). It was fun to get to know him and find out how protective and endearing he truly is. (He was also a very fun and OP unit LOL.)
I just have to say once again that I really admire how much meaning you put into your lyrics, and I appreciate that you share your thoughts about them! I really loved the interaction from 2:46 - 4:00. Mercedes is constantly reaching out to others and seeing the good inside them. She has a knack for seeing past facades, and she knows that Dimitri and Emile are both good people who have been through terrible things that left their marks on them.
You are a genius for pointing out the similarities between Dimitri and Jeritza - I never really thought of it that way, but it’s SO TRUE. It’s so sad that they both see themselves as monsters when they’ve really been traumatized by the horrible people and situations around them. I wish there were one route where everyone could just be happy 😭.
Sidenote: I’ve really enjoyed watching Dimitri’s growth across the songs just as he grows and heals throughout AM. You've done such a great job with that!
I really didn't expect to get so attached to Jeritza, but his bond with Mercedes really is so beautiful. If there's anything I don't like about AM, it's definitely the fact that there was no way to save him :( At the same time though, it really speaks to the unfair nature of war and how sometimes it pits family members against each other.
I remember Mercedes' A support with Dimitri and how she gently pointed out to him that he's not a monster since the reason he kills is because he wants his loved ones to rest in peace. She truly is perceptive and so so empathetic. I love her character so much, and I'm glad you felt that my lyrics were able to convey those aspects of her.
When I was researching for this song, I saw someone comment about Dimitri and Jeritza's similarities, so I can't exactly take credit for it haha. But yes, both of them really did live such tragic lives. Also, the fact that Mercedes battling against Jeritza occurs a chapter before Dimitri has his talk with Edelgard further emphasizes their similarities in that they both have to fight their own sister. It's as if the narrative is building up to that climatic moment when Dimitri and Edelgard face off in the final chapter!

Honestly, I wish that there was some unique dialogue about how simalier the two are in game. Even in Three hopes they could have had Felix say something like "Wow this looks like something you would do Boar." When Jeritza killed all the bandits. (Granted I haven't finished Azure Gleam yet so it might have been mentioned if it is don't tell me)

I love this so much!!! The amount of thought and care you put into your lyrics is phenomenal! Your singing is so beautiful! I really love the diction and articulation you have. It makes it even more emotional. Also, when there are multiple voices I get so many chills!! I love the harmonies. I also love the amount of character development here. Holy smokes, this might be the best onne yet! I love how Dimitri draws multiple comparisons between himself and the Death Knight, trying to get through to him. The shared chorus between Mercedes and Emile was powerful and I can't believe you made that one line RED.

I believe the phrase "Every rose has its thorns, I've been one since I was born" Means that Emile sees himself as the wretched and evil part of their bloodline, while Mercedes is the flower that calms and helps people, a rose can technically persist even if you remove the thorns, and so Emile believes that his death will finally end Mercie's pain and suffering, he cannot help her otherwise, he is just a thorn, meant to hurt others, and so his death is the only way to set things right.
And now, a botany nerd's comment: Roses don't have thorns, but stingers, a thorn is a whole organ (Like a leaf or a fruit), stingers are just part of the plant's skin, and so their removal is less harmful.
Oooohhh your interpretation of that line is so good! I haven't thought about it like that before. And lol thank you for educating me on that note about roses not having thorns. It's interesting that thorns are actually organs! I had no idea about that.
