Ive watched 4 of your cutting board videos back to back and they remind me of those artists that draw upside down. I dont see the pattern until you flip the pieces over and im like, "ooohhhh"
If i beg and plead can you do a demo/explanation of your clamping table? That looks amazing!
Boy, you really did upgrade that planer. Mine's not nearly as musical. Beautiful boards, btw!
Thanks!
08:03 just melts my brain, as the pattern isn't there and then suddenly is. Love it!
Love watching it come together!
Excellent dedication and work ethic. Thank you for all the time that's necessary for the builds that you accomplish!
Thank you!
Wished you would teach how to make those. You do great work but teaching like sizes, angles, ect would help so many people out wanting to build these.
Then he would have more competition
@@woodworkingandepoxy643 He could make more money selling how to do these then you would selling the boards themselves.
He has heaps of videos showing how he does it, and there are lots of other people who have tutorials and plans available on the internet.
Everything you need is out there, so if you are still waiting for someone to tell you one more piece of information I suspect you aren’t really very motivated to actually make the thing.
@@pieflies Not everyone watching these has the tech savey you may have re. how to find this stuff, doesn't mean they are unmotivated. Fact they are asking for more info demonstrates motivation.
@@ptbaily1
maybe, but I can only speak from my own experience and what I have observed in others I’ve had to teach things to, and in those cases someone wants to be spoon fed all the information usually ends up not having the motivation to stick with that thing once they are on their own.
People who just get in and give something a go tend to learn faster and more deeply and have already shown that they want to do a thing enough to get themselves out of their comfort zone.
I wasn’t saying it in a mean way, more in a practical way since that’s usually how it works out and if they really want to make boards they should just get in and give it a go instead of waiting for more information to come to them.
I don’t entirely buy the tech savvy argument, since they are already watching a video on TH-cam and there are lots of tutorials on here but I agree that everyone isn’t starting from the same place in that regard, which is the same with anything. Learning how to learn is part of learning.
Asking questions is only a small part of it. It’s what you do with the answer that matters, and what you do if you don’t get the response you need. Can you take the initiative to get the information you need.
I know that I can do that, but I also know that with a lot of things I have a passing interest in, I’m not interested enough to actually make the effort to do it.
It can definitely be hard to know where to start though, and a new topic can be overwhelming when you’re just starting out, but there are lot of resources out there that can help.
In fact there is often so much information available now that you can get stuck taking in information and never actually doing the thing you’re learning about, which is another trap you have to watch out for.
Depending on where you live there might also be people you can learn from in person if you go looking. A lot of people will do better that way vs having to direct their learning for themselves but again, unless you’re a child being forced to go to school you have to seek out your teacher for yourself.
Maybe the original commenter got no response, then went off and sought out the information they needed elsewhere and has success, in which case my comment was irrelevant to them as they already did what I was suggesting.
But if not, or if someone else wanting more information comes across this comment, I hope they will not just wait and hope someone feeds them the information but they go and seek what they need to get going.
You inspire me! Love the cutting boards/ butcher blocks. You do awesome work and I love you videos
Great video and fantastic end product. Nice work.
WOW!
the pattern is unbelievable
Pretty cool hey
jealous of you shop upgrades. well deserved.
I love the pattern on the boards. Great video!
I absolutley love they way you play with the audio on these vids :)
I have fun with it 😁
As always absolutely gorgeous!!!
Thank you!
One dope ass tutorial! I feel much more comfortable attempting now.
Glad it was of some value
Ryan, thanks for sharing. Those boards are F****G works of art, not just wood working! Happy New Year to you, your family, friends and loved ones! Wishing you all the success you deserve for 2024! ❤
Thank you so much, same to you my friend!
I love your work. So precise!!!
Thank you so much!
stunning!!
Thank you!!
amazing work!
Thank you!
Fantastic looking board my friend.
Thank you!
Astonishing.
And you make a very arresting video for all the work.
The video itself was a masterpiece!
As someone mentioned already, this is a work of art.
It belongs in a museum.
You have the shop for an organized project like this, which helps immensely; but truly, this is a mind blowing, fabulous work you have created.
Thank you very much for sharing it with us all.
Top notch work!! You produce some of the nicest and quality boards...many blessings to you and keep the videos coming!!😊
Thank you, that's my plan!
Beautiful
Thanks!
Wonderful work
Many thanks
Absolutely stunning. ❤
Love watching these videos.
Glad you like them!
awesome job
Hi Ryan had message to contact you
I'm obsessed. I gotta have one.
Amazing!!
Thanks!
Absolutely fantastic! Well done Ryan 💯🔥 Happy New year bro 👊🏼
Thanks! Same to you!
Great job👍🏼
Amazing 😊 And thanks for the mineral oil tip!
beautiful boards. I'm not surprised you're selling these well, that's a lot of work per board, and customers can see that
Thank you very much!
Bonjour, Ryan, c'est vraiment magnifique, beau travail, ces grandes planches à découper sont du plus bel effet! Félicitations et tous mes vœux pour 2024! 👍👍
Have you considered upgrading your planer with a helical cutter head? I upgraded to the lux cut iii and it's a game changer. Cost more upfront but it has already paid for itself by not having to buy blades anymore. Still one my first edge after a lot of use.
Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦. Happy New Year. Wow, I enjoyed this video and am amazed with the final product. It seemed like a lot of work but it's well worth it in the end. Great video. Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
Thanks Ryan
Thank you!
Beautiful. Question, looked like you took the rough sawn boards straight to the planer to flatten the faces. If one face isn’t perfect is that a good idea? I thought one face and edge should go through the jointer first.
No matter how I squint, it's impossible to NOT see the 3D effect! Lol! Love it - So impressive!
Great video and thanks for showing how you made them! Couple of questions if you have time:
Is there a reason you don't have a drum sander in your workflow?
Are you cauls just ripped 2x4, or are they "bent/curved" as to apply even pressure to ensure they're straight when clamped?
fantastic job, love the board. Would love to have a step by step process to make these. I would be willing to pay for that.
greate job!!!
Thanks!
When you offset your boards do you measure exact or are they roughly the same?
Great video!
Why not flattening the boards on the planner (min 10:10)?
Fantastic video and builds, thank you for sharing! After resawing the cherry, do you plane or otherwise clean up the bandsaw marks? Or do you just make sure to glue the surfaced side to the walnut/cherry piece?
If I ever made that, even I would have a hard time using it. I have made many funky cutting boards and given crap to the receivers not using them. I would use all the ones I made. But that is sick
The flaw in my own shop is the lack of clamps! Thanks for the look into your process!
I've got quite a few but not quite enough
Great video Ryan! My favorite step is applying the mineral oil!!! Actually, everything is fairly simple once you know how to make different patterns as you do, it just looks like it’s extremely time consuming. I’d probably get everything glued up and discover I aligned the boards incorrectly just as I’m applying the mineral oil. I imagine that’s happened to everyone at least once. The worst part of the process is unquestionably the sanding. Maybe one day you can purchase a drum sander, although you’d still have to manually do the final passes with the orbital sander. That can be a job for your kid when old enough! Do you find that you use less sand paper with the Cubitron rather than something like diablo? Does the Cubitron paper leave a better finish? I just bought a couple boxes of higher grits as I’m not wealthy, nor do I believe it’s necessary to use Cubitron for all the grits, but haven’t had a chance to use it yet. Anyway, the boards look great!
Yes, I find the cubitron to be far more efficient than the other brands. I use way less of it as it lasts a lot longer and it speeds things up immensely. Worth its weight in gold if you tend to do a lot of sanding.
Mr. Ryan good afternoon! I am your fan, what you do is a work of art, I want to buy one of the boards from you but unfortunately I can’t yet
I’ve watched a couple of your videos, it seems you don’t face joint your boards before running them through the plainer. How does this work? If the board has cup or twist, doesn’t it still have that after planing?
You Need a cnc router would make things a lot easier
I completely agree
How do you avoid snipe on your glued up boards
How do you deal with the skiff at the end of the boards ftom the planer?
I use the same brand glue. Went to my local Rockler earlier in 2023 where there was a pile of the green off to one side with a "not for sale" sign. I asked about it: on the in from the manufacturer in Minnesota the load had frozen solid and they deemed it unusable. Has yours ever frozen?
Excellent Content!...once again! question.....is it not necessary to "joint" one side before running it through the Planer? I always thought you needed a flat reference side before running it through the Planer.
That is definitely the correct sequence of milling. My jointer is no longer up to the task of face jointing hardwood and I need to get a new one. So what I do is pick out the straightest boards I can at my supplier and skip plane them which gives me some satisfactory glue faces.
Nice boards. How do you keep them from warping after they’re done. I made one for Christmas and it has bower a little over time.
I make mine beefy, these are nearly 2.5". I find the added thickness gives an end grain board an added rigidity that keeps the board from wanting to warp
What band saw do you use? I'm in the market for one to replace my old 1940s band saw but not sure what to go with. Do they still sell yours?
Laguna 14/12, I've had for for 7+ years now, been super happy with it. They still sell it.
Awesome 🏆👍👍wow … new subscriber !
I have nothing to say really, but I appreciate your content, and wish to help with the yt-algorithms.
As always, I appreciate you!
Awesome. I have one question why do you offset the first panels? But those are some beautiful boards. Also see you have a new planner what brand did you get? It looks like a beast.
Simply to minimize the cutoff and maximize yield of strips during the bandsaw step where I slice everything up at a 45 degree angle. Planer is a King Canada
@@ryanhawkins Thanks that is what I thought then I watched your video on the falling block boards and you mentioned it You are truly a master craftsman.
I'm curious about your aversion to juice grooves...why? I know it's a preference but I just wondered why you don't like them.
Having a groove all the way around can make sliding chopped things off the board tricky. I've often thought about trying a 2 or 3 sided groove and leaving one side open. And from a labour standpoint, they aren't very much fun to sand
hello Ryan & it's is Randy and i like yours video is cool Thanks Ryan Friends Randy
Hi, glad you liked it!
Can’t you flatten them in a drum sander instead of a router sled? Or is that much slower ?
With all the other quality tools you have why wouldn’t you get a drum sander (large one) that would pay for itself rapidly if you make a lot of these. A good drum sander works amazingly well and yes on end grain. Anyway, remarkable board and operation.
Can you do a houndstooth pattern?
Never tried one before so right now I'll say no
How do you figure out all the cuts to make the different shapes?
I first learned from the plans I purchased from MTMWood whom I mention early on in the video
Wow
Nice work Ryan. Can you tell me why you use mineral oil as opposed to say pure tung oil? Wouldn't it solve the curing problem?
I've worked with pure tung oil before and the stuff I used recommended at least 3 applications and minimum 24 hours in between and it also had quite the odour to it even after fully dry. With mineral oil it's a simple matter of dipping the board, letting dry and then on to wax.
Thanks for reply. Perhaps not all tung oil created equal@@ryanhawkins
how many times have you messed up a glue up?
Oh, more than a few times😂
I'm guessing your shop is about 32' X 60' or larger , Ryno how big is your shop?
how much you sold each?
One this size sells for $860 CAD and I've sold quite a few at this point.
What do you charge for something like that?
$880 CAD + shipping for a 20x24"

🙌
I would easily have payed 800 USD for that cuttingboard, then i would have banned my family from using it and placed it on the wall as artwork. By the way, how many screwclamps reside in your workshop? :)
Dam m8 there stunning. Feel like a may have seen them before? Although 2 videos in a week ill take that more of that schedule please. 🫢 Did a also spy new sander?? Hope you had great new year can't wait see what u come up with this year. 🏴👍
I've got a ton of cutting board footage I'm working through, have some big ambitions for some big projects this year!
@@ryanhawkins ohhhh interesting. Can't wait am gonna try attempt few of your styles this year although for my business I'll never get to prices you get. Bandsaw masterclass would be good one. I've recently purchased my first. 🏴👍
@@ryanhawkins was that new sander u was using??
@@michaelwillson6847 I picked that up as a substitute while my festool rotex was away on a warranty claim. The Bosch is great but I still prefer the Festool
@@ryanhawkins fair enough did wonder didn't think you'd of went away from festool unless was to either Mirka or the 3m equivalent. 🏴👍
Beautiful
Thanks!
