  • Did Toyota make a mistake making the new Toyota Supra with BMW? We get a 700HP heavily modified 2021 Toyota Supra in the shop to find out how well it's holding up.
In this video we check out a sweet 2021 Toyota Supra that's modified and done well. The owner of this Supra really did this one well!
The best part is this car have had these modifications for over 10k miles and has been absolutely reliable. Not to say that this is a reliable car. This goes to say that the current generation Supra has a lot of ties with what made the old one great.
With simple bolt on modifications you can make a lot of power without having to have a complete engine rebuild.

I had a 2020 Supra and changed out my downpipe easily. The turbo is completely exposed when you remove the airbox making a turbo swap a 30 min job. Toyota/BMW know that the owners will modify this car and so they built it as such. A mod friendly platform. Truly an enthusiast car. Compared to the new Nissan Z you need to drop subframe to get to the turbos. You will spend many many hours on that car.

Money talks. Developping an entire platform with drivetrain costs a lot of money. If the platform and drivetrain is sound, why not? The B58 is apparently a very well-built, strong engine. The ZF trans is arguably the best auto trans ever. They are built in big numbers so parts are likely to be available for a long time. The Z4 is supposed to handle very well. The only thing I was hoping for, just like the GTR, is that it would come with a V8...imagine a supercharged Lexus V8, I think it's called the 2ur-ge, that 5 litre beauty which started in the 1st gen isf. Now, THAT would've made this car truly special but also quite a bit more money thus less accessible. It makes sense for what it is. It's special enough to attract buyers now that the mk4 prices have gone silly. I would not buy one because things like corvettes exist but it's pretty cool.

Speaking of brakes, Just checked my own, 76,000 miles on stock brakes, and still at 4.5mm of pad left front and rear and the rotors are in perfect condition. If you drive well, you can save a lot on brakes. Pretty much every used car I ever bought came with completely destroyed pads and rotors and for some reason, brake fluid with lots of moisture. My new cars NEVER have these issues. Bought my sister a 2017 camry, only had 19k miles and already had bad brakes and rotors, but how ever she drove, it only got worse to the point where one of the pads completely sheered off the pad mount, leaving just the clips and calipers. Within 24 hours the rotor was also...toast. How you drive matters so much.

My Supra brand new was burning a quart of oil every 700-1,000 miles. Toyota did nothing to fix it. No one at 2 nearby Toyota dealerships knew how to work on it or even wanted to work on it because it's a BMW. They have 1-2 techs per dealership "trained" over a 3 day crash course on how to work on a BMW that they will see only a few times per year. Toyota Corporate did nothing to fix the problem and after months of hearing hot air from them about a TSB that never materialized, I dumped the car. I won't be buying another Toyota product again after they wasted (effectively stole) my money and sold me a defective product without repair. If you want a BMW, buy it from BMW because at least they will know how to work on it.
