    The internet is on fire with opinions about the new Toyota Supra and BMW Z4, but it seems that there isn't much in the way of facts. We decided to dig into some research and find out what the truth actually was behind the Toyota and BMW partnership.
    Spoiler alert: Most of the internet is wrong. (Surprise, I know!)
    This took hundreds of hours of research and translation from German and Japanese as well as a number of in-person interviews with the actual designers and engineers from both the BMW and Toyota teams. Below I'll drop the online references we used in order to get the information presented in this video, feel free to check them out! Albon, I want to thank you for this video. Honestly. The amount of keyboard warriors who talk trash about the A90 without ever having seeing one in real life, driving one, and experiencing one is too much. This video compiles FACTS and TRUTHS in such an unbiased way. I feel a lot of the anger towards the A90 by most people who are against it are due to the fact that it was codeveloped, when they don't understand that the legendary Supra name had to be executed in such a way that would comply with Toyota's standards.
    I truly am so stoked that a new Supra exists and that it is actually attainable at less than $100K CAD; the GTR and NSX are out of most people's price ranges brand new, and this to me was a very wise business move on Toyota's goal to make this more attainable for everyone.

    • @albonfilms
      @albonfilms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Thank you for the kind words! The A90 has definitely been a polarizing topic for sure, but I think that the facts will prevail in the end. I, like many others, have my fair share of complaints about the project, but having driven it and now having owned one, I can safely say that it is a genuinely great sports car, especially for the money.

      Not true at all, it all depends on which BMW you decide to go with, if you chose n54 for example, well then you might be right., Also it comes down to how much maintenance you do on your car, that an knowledge of "what to do".

      You've either owned 2nd hand junk yard BMW's or you're just trolling or had some serious bad luck. I'm driving BMW for the last 12 years, replacing every 2 years and never had any issues with the car, dealer or backup service. I agree with Gabe, people comment very easily on what they think, not what they actually have experienced.

    • @williamkorver9856
      @williamkorver9856 5 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      LMP Riptide, There is much to love about BMW but 12 years worth of 2 year relationships does not a marriage make. Having turned wrenches on cars for 35 years my experience has mimicked in general the average of the various reported statistics on used car repair rates that are available to review. Replacing broken parts and especially rebuilding drive-line components strips away a lot of the euphoria of the brand oriented opinions so popular on the internet. Compared to cars in the early 80's, almost all cars have dramatically reduced repairs under 50k miles due to improved technologies and materials. So until you get into a "12 year" relationship with one car please understand that the strong emotional tie you feel towards BMW is due to experiencing the newness of German engineering. Enjoy it! But understand what it is.

    I can really appreciate the research and facts brought out here. It really clears many things up concerning the Toyota/BMW collaboration. Well stated and very interesting to say the least and otherwise without their partnership, we would've never gotten either of these cars. Manual of course is always good but then again how many sports cars today at all price ranges are really using a manual anymore? As much as some of us like to row our own gears we have to accept that they are just about gone now for dual clutch transmissions instead. And this seems to be the standard for most sports cars today. The auto industry has moved in this direction so we have to adapt to the change as well. Complaining and whining about manuals now is not going to change anything. If a company happens to offer one great but don't expect this to be the case anymore. But I digress, an odd pairing between these two companies but all in all I think we may end up pleasantly surprised. Just because it's new and different than previous ones doesn't mean it still can't be good in it's own way.

      Edit - I was wrong. Yahama did not make the 2jz. I can admit when I am wrong. I apologize for misinforming anyone. My opion on Mk5 still stands though. I still dont see it selling well.
      Well then they aren't hardcore fanbois because the Mk4 Toyota Supra was made in conjunction with Yamaha. Toyota did not make the motor Yamaha did. I understand what Toyota was trying to do here and it would have been a solid pick to go with BMW to help them with the straight six motor aspect of the supra since BMW has some of the greatest straight six motors of all time no question. But what ends up happening is feeling like Toyota took the easy way out and used a bunch of parts bin cookie cutter BMW crap instead of making it feel like a Toyota. Its just a shame all the way around because to be honest I'm sure its a great car. But I don't know how great a car can be if its only got 350hp in a price bracket that its competitors have 450+ hp. I mean ever the BMW Z4 that has the identical motor as the new Supra comes from the factory with more HP than the Supra haha. Just doesn't make sense to me. I understand a great car isn't just made from a hp number but for what its up against its got a lot to make up for only pushing 350hp if that makes sense.

    I’ll put my two cents in - I bought a Supra 2 years ago. I love it. The shape is distinctive and still turns heads. The sound of its stock exhaust is entertaining and never fatiguing. It’s suspension provides comfort at distance and over the pot-holes in the battered U.K. road system. Very few exist in my area - the ownership experience thus far has felt like I am privileged to drive such car. I cannot quite understand the revulsion people have for its excellent auto gearbox, it’s paddles allow full control if you want it. There is plenty of room for tuning and upgrading - why this car hasn’t sold in larger quantities seems to me to be pure prejudice against its BMW - Toyota hybrid origins. This video is the best I’ve viewed in describing the cars design; superb work. Thank you

  • @Smychavo

    Been thinking about this for awhile. What the 'Supra' was to other people will not have any real meaning to me since I didn't grow up in that time period. From what I can tell, it was a GT car more than it was a sports car. One could argue that some of that spirit went into the LC more than the new Supra itself, despite not explicitly being inspired by it. Which leads me to another thing, everyone seems to have an idea of what they think the Supra should be, and it feels like that's clouded so much of the discussion (BMW parts aside) around it. But fact of the matter is, to the CEO, and to Tada, Supra meant sports car, and it's one hell of a sports car at that. I feel that when people refer to the spirit of the car, it's more to do with their own predispositions, their own nostalgia of the past models, rather than having to do anything with the car itself. I know this because sitting in one for the first time, it felt special right off the bat, despite the switchgear, there was an aura of anticipation I experienced. I can imagine the same could be said for any other sports car that other people have lusted after before back in the early 2000s, or in the 90s, or 80s, or any other time period for that matter, that's just the cycle of things, and I've come to terms with it. What I haven't come to terms with, however, is whether I like this or the LC 500 more lol. They both set out to make driving fun, in different ways while having great, focused interiors, concept-car styling, and excellent engines and chassis dynamics to boot. While the LC is much more expensive, as a stretch goal car, I could see myself going out of my way to make it work, like I could with the Supra. Ahh, decisions, decisions.

      And @Jack Carline, Yes, there is something bad about BMW's. They are frigging money pits, literally the opposite of Toyota's philosophy, hence the controversy.. Yes, they drive nicely, but not that much better than most other sporty cars. Most of their mystique is thanks to the brand awareness AKA, badge whores... In short, BMW's are overrated (and yes, I have actually driven them, several of them). When double blind taste tested, most could not tell the difference between 99cent coffee, and overpriced Starbucks coffee. In fact, some preferred the 99cent stuff!. And yet, people still overpay for Starbucks because of brand awareness, and I get it, it's what they want other people to think of them, they want to be seen being able to afford overpriced coffee... But that right there is another problem. People will be overpaying for BMW maintenance without even enjoying the badge whoring aspect, double fail.

Not manufacturered in anyway by Toyota. That is a hard sell, namely you slap a Supra badge on it. The other part, a lower HP driver's car with no optional manual trans at launch is a huge contradiction to their sales pitch for who they are marketing it towards.

    I have to say, it was a definitely unexpected design, and I was a bit standoffish from the company at first. But the more I looked at it , read about it, and thought about it, I really have come to start to like it. I think the problem was that we ( supra owners ) have come to love the exact design of the mk4. I think there are so many people unwilling to accept change, or anything they're not used to. Realistically speaking, this car is pretty nice, and reasonably priced ( It's a f*ckin supra, c'mon ). I don't really mind that it doesn't have the so wished for 3jz. It doesn't need it in all honesty. We already have the mk4. Why do we need another? My respect has increased for toyota having the absolute passion to constantly innovate and create new, unique cars.

      BMW and Toyota does not need to work together. They are doing fine by them selves. But they decide to work together across the different time zone and cultural barrier to envision something new.
      I'm sure both companies learned a lot from each other and that's good for all of us.
      Maybe BMW QA team learned thing or two about quality control.
      Maybe Toyota learned thing or two from BMW’s design philosophy and what us must for them.
      For me, this shows that both companies are willing to explore new possibilities and step away from corporate group think ( once you are in a group.. It becomes the echo chamber. Sooner or later everyone is repeating everyone else. ” That's how we always do things.”) and willing to spend $$$ on R&D.
      This is big win for both companies even if the cars do not sell in high volume.
      Selling more car was not the goal. It's more of process improvement and testing / design methodology they learned from each other.

    I was a hater of the Supra MKV. I thought it was the greatest failure ever. With the low horsepower numbers to the B58 being a mediocre engine, at best. Then, the numbers started coming in. The first were the 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times. No way this engine is producing 382 HP. Then, you witness the dyno numbers and you realize Toyota was lying about the numbers in the best way possible (the dyno numbers presented 382 at the wheel which translates to around 440-450 at the crank). Then Papadikas racing did a breakdown on the B58 and your realize it's a beast of an engine with so much potential. Now that they've released the manual, I have one on order.

The people who actually might buy this car new are they type that drive used Corvettes, and Boxters today. They want BMW handling, with some small suggestion of reliability. The Supra's interior shares 80% of its parts from BMW (see the photos), it has BMW sourced engines, has a BMW sourced suspension, the list goes on. The only difference between these cars are the exteriors and possibly the driving dynamics. Under the body, the Supra is most certainly a re-badged BMW. Having been a Toyota factory trained technician in the T-TEN program I can appreciate the Japanese desire for reliability. I was surprised when learning of their mechanical theory of extra hardware and on the electrical side multiple redundant links to ground. I often asked if they'd not have significant savings in a production run to leave out some of the things along those lines? I was assured that both were weighed and reliable transportation was more important than the numbers on the bottom line. I have not been in the industry since the last Supra due to being involved in a non-work related vehicle crash with an unaccounted variable of a driver without sufficient concerns for our lives or of the occupants of their vehicle. Takata has left many with a black eye and the corporate has had a few questions about the motoring public world wide. Into every life a little rain must fall. How we come back from it is where the plumb bob of our reputation is hung from. I know that most people who I know that are NASCAR fans aren't especially happy, but all you can do is your very best and see where the flag falls at the end of the race.

I have always LOVED the MK4 Supra - it was a real engineering masterpiece and still so much fun to look at this its timeless design. I mean who hollows out the carpet kit to save on weight? Truly inspiring engineering. That all that said, this is where the BMW-Toyota partnership ultimately falls short for me: I really wanted Toyota to engineer it on their own to uphold and nurture the Supra HERITAGE. The new Supra doesn't hit the mark for me in doing that, because it was inspired by BMW. By this I mean, similar to what Nissan has done generation after generation with the GT-R, they maintained the HERITAGE of the model brand and that is where I feel Toyota missed out. As Toyota doesn't have that kind of system, it looks like it's an improvement you'd want to have in a Supra.

And though emissions control are necessary in the coming times, to avoid loosing our planet's survivability, without partnerships each Goliath(read Piston-wheels) will turn to dust in front of the new David(read E-cars) eventually. But I don't like the idea of autonomy; no matter what, or how comforting it could be; would be the death of fun in driving. And certainly after a few decades, people will just forget how to drive a car.

      and trust me those BMW parts won't last ... not because the Germans cannot engineer it to last but precisely because BMW has mastered the engineering and modeling for the parts to last lots of miles but fail not long after the warranty "times" out. My company specialized in resin formulations and we can tweak the chemistry of any resin material to fail after a set amount of time/cycles and my experience with my very low mileage M6 has me convinced that the parts failures are no accident.

    Great video! The armchair speculation surrounding these cars is a bit absurd, and we really should be celebrating the fact that these vehicles were brought to market. I must admit that the interior of the Supra is, in my opinion, disappointingly too much BWM and not enough Toyota. And while I would still love to drive the Supra, the lack of a manual transmission option would prevent me from buying one.
    I'm not completely sold on the styling of the Supra, either. Toyota's current design language is, for me, quite hit or miss. It seems like every so often they come up with a redesign that looks great, but is surrounded by other vehicles that just don't look good to me. (I largely feel the same way about Honda's more recent offerings, too.) I won't even get into some of the stuff they've done with Lexus. From a design perspective, the Supra looks okay in a lot of ways, great from certain angles (especially the rear), but overly complicated or outright weird from other angles. The front end in particular seems a bit off.
    I miss car designs that had simpler lines, less creases and swoops and superfluous edges that only serve to clutter everything up. It seems like manufacturers these days regard clean designs as boring or something, as if everything has to look complicated in order to stand out. One needs only to look back at the Mk IV Supra for a great example of a car with simple, clean lines that looks great. Even exotic manufacturers like Ferrari are doing this. I think almost anything they've made in the past 10 years pales stylistically in comparison even with many of their cars from the 80's. I think Lamborghini is about the only company who can consistently pull off complicated designs that look good, but even then, these modern designs are starting to make cars like the Murcielago look classic.
    Getting back to the Supra though, I really need to see one in person. Actually, I'd like to see several in person, in different colors. I imagine I'd probably like the styling a lot more if I saw it up close.

    This car is hated by people who can't afford it, who think its cool to hate it because other people do, or simply because they're 15 year old MK4 fangirls. You've got a two-door RWD inline 6 turbo car that runs 12 seconds flat on the 1/4 mile stock, and an engine that is easily receptive to power gains. Compared to other cars on the market in an era where sports cars are being discontinued for people movers and SUVs, it is amazing. The ONLY screw up is that there should have been a manual option, for the purists.

  • @CleanSC
    @CleanSC 5 ปีที่แล้ว +57

    Look I have no issue with this car's existence or the reasons as to how they made this way. BUT. Don't call it Supra. Let the nameplate die an honorable death instead of using nostalgia as a money grab. This should have been called the Toyota 89. Big brother to the 86. That way, NO ONE would have gotten pissed off. It's just another jointly built machine. Plus give us a damn manual, FFS. All this emphasis on driving enjoyment and perfect balance, blah blah blah and you nerf it with 2 pedals? Come on, guys... The 86 has it, this one should, too.

    • @CleanSC
      @CleanSC 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@cheefukeefu I'm fully aware of the AE86 call back. I've been building Toyotas for over 2 decades. The new Supra was supposed to be the spiritual big brother to the 86, so a larger number would make more sense to the general public which has no idea was JZA80 means anyway. Besides, this new Supra has nothing to do with the old one so any reference to JZA80 would be pointless. It fits in with the typical numbering standards automakers are using. Use any number, letter, greek alphabet character, I don't give a SHIT. Just don't use Supra!

    • @CleanSC
      @CleanSC 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@cheefukeefu I don't buy that because it has an inline 6 makes it a Supra. Many cars have inline 6's. BMW has been doing it forever and they still do. Are other BMW's then related to the Supra, because of the inline 6? That's like saying the Camry V6 and the Taurus V6 are the same car. Both FWD V6 sedans, yet entirely different.
      The fact remains this car is mechanically a BMW with a Toyota body on it. It's a joint venture, much like the 86. The new Supra has more in the common with the 86 than it does with the MK4 -- by a wide margin. This is why I have a problem with the name, not the project. Had they called it anything else, there would be no backlash.
      Make no mistake, this car is NOTHING Supra. To say the BMW inline 6 makes it a Supra is ludicrous. It's not even a manual, even less relation to Supra.
      They just did it for the commercials and sales. Despicable.

    • @CleanSC
      @CleanSC 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@cheefukeefu It seems we agree on all counts but the name. ;) To me, it's just not a Supra. Toyota did not build it so... not a Supra. If Porsche and Subaru got together and built a new 911 with on top of an Impreza platform flipped around so the engine was in the back, would you be ok with that being called a 911? I mean, it's got a boxer engine in it, so YASSS it's still a Porsche. No way man. This is the same thing here. Collabs are fine. But call them what they are.

    Nissan had the 300zx

    Lexus the LS
    After that japanese sport and luxury cars started slowly declining towards the 2000’s.

No i don't think someone would compromise his/her safety, In addition spare parts are now being sold by bulk by the dealers and are very expensive where are the good days of selling that specific part that is broken and not a full unit!!, Another thing they force you to fix in the dealer by making the design complex so you can't do it by yourself!!
      I'm an optimist personally, But that i had to say.
