I'm SO tired of "trends." Find what you love and decorate the way you love and have fun with it. Being unduly influenced by what we're seeing in stores/magazines/wherever and changing our decor every year or three is consumerism gone mad. I'm a big fan of thrifting, creating, repurposing, and keeping classic pieces we love. We're living in our houses, not preparing for a magazine shoot. 😆 Cheers

This is exactly right. Why would I decorate on trends - when that will be outdated quickly? I have enough stuff. Any style can look good if it's done with thought as it reflects your style and how you want to live and express yourself.

Thank you! It was so refreshing to read your viewpoint. Trends are often expensive so finding creative and affordable ways to decorate while still looking somewhat current has become a bit of a hobby. I’ve found that repurposing and up-cycling is much more satisfying and personal than the latest “catalogue showroom look.”

I agree to disagree that multi function room is going 'away'. First off, it's only a trend to those who are able to afford it as a trend. For the rest of us , especially those living in cities with sky high rents, and now with inflation going through the roof and still going up, multi functional room is a NECESSITY.

No kidding. Not all of us have massive homes, etc. That we have the extra space that is flexible to use how we want. Most of us have a room that serves multiple purposes. Office, workout room, guest bedroom. That won't change for many of us. Most of us live in smaller spaces. 😉

Seeing maximalism explained by interior designers that don’t completely dislike it helped me understand why it can be such a magnetic style. It requires a high level of curation, high level of personality. It’s great for those who love lots of art, or lots of handmade pieces, or lots of photos, or are an artist, or love being surrounded by memories & things that tickle our fancy. Many TH-cam comments I’ve seen remark that the modern minimalistic style on almost every social media interior from 2021 is an overdone instagram style, where they all look the same (some say that’s why it’s predicted to lose popularity).

    • @ilikecontent2327
      @ilikecontent2327 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Yes. Correct. I am an artist and can appreciate art and culture and all the nuances of design. And I don't know if I agree with the notion that the Maximalist style is overdone anymore than the neutral/modern style with its carmel/or white sofa and striped rug or taupe/cream throws, wood accents, textured plain art with stripes of black/cream/white and throwing in some neutral pillows or adding in a green plant and calling that adding color. (Lets not even get into the bedroom with the plain white duvets or white walls, neutral tones and taupe throws, or simple design rugs, etc.)Or adding a textured clay vase, or sculpture maybe a black accent wall. I find these styles bland and boring, but safe. Very over done.
And yes like creating a beautiful complex piece of art it takes great skill and in-depth study and contemplation(trust me--it is not unusual for me to work with 15 or more shades, tones, colors of paint to create one piece of art--that is how you get depth to piece and make it coheisive). The Maximalism style is hard to pull off. I am not a designer, but can appreciate the difficulty some design styles present. But unless you have a keen eye for color and design(or can afford to hire a designer)you can really miss the mark when you pull a room together with this style. Which is why so many people choose a safer route of neutrals and classic designs and are afraid to embrace color.
Believe me when I say that even professional designers(and artists)when doing a more challenging design(or say art piece) can fail at the attempt. The Maximalist style or styles that are similar can utilize all spectrum of colors and furniture(old and new) art that is modern or traditional--textures. But that it is all the same? That is like saying a Monet painting is the same as a Picasso. Because of the difficulty in pulling off that design in my limited knowledge I can say with confidence that I have as well as other artists(even at the highest level of skill) can work countless hours on a piece only to fail and start over.
But we have a passion for what we do and that makes it all worth it. And when it works! Well that is everything... And when you make someone happy with the finished product...it is very rewarding. Be it a more complex design style or a piece of art. So that is what matters. 😊

One can freshen it up with pillow change, new lamp shade, different rug, perhaps a new color paint but the bones stay the same and the freshen up bill is not outrageous! Husband wanted modern style when we first got married. He is cheap! When I explained that the price tag for his choice was going to hurt every 5-6 years….traditional it is.

This is why I don't style my house because of a trend or someone else's taste. I walk my own path far from a follower.Decorate with what YOU love & your style will never go out of style ♡ I don't have just 1 style. I love the modern yet old with warmth & character. So mine is a mixtures of both with a little cottage here & there. I LOVE going into homes with character & that reflects those that live there instead of everything being only 2 or 3 colors. Color, light, more family pictures vs art. That's what makes a cold home a warm home. I encourage everyone to surround themselves with what they love. There isn't any rules in decorating..except staying true to yourself ♡ as long as you love it..that's what matters. Same same! My main rooms are monochromatic with color in plants or art etc, but my smaller, more personal rooms make you feel alive in all the right ways. It started with our new home after the pandemic and 2 hurricanes. We were living in a camper and received help to get us in a mobile home. I let my kids pick the color of their rooms to make them feel more optimistic and personalize it.
      I. LOVED IT.
My 6yr old daughter picked yellow. YELLOW! I wanted to run and hide but did it anyway. It’s bright, highlighter yellow and she has rainbow-light “curtains” with sheer drapes. We put jewel toned butterflies in clustered flight patterns all around. She has a night neon rainbow bedspread and a cloud lamp. I have never felt happier in a room in all my life.
My 13 yr old picked bright neon green and a deep suede blue (two opposing walls green, the other ones blue). We put a 5 arm metal lamp with diff color led flood lights and painted the moon phases on an arc in the corner of his room starting on one blue wall and going to the other green wall. The moons are in chalk paint so he can write himself notes. He’s also got a large silver, seated wolf statue, howling at a framed piece of full moon art that says “Just a Phase” and wow I LOVE the mood it sets you in.
Our master bedroom has an entire chalkboard wall where the bed is against it. I draw diff headboards any chance I get. I’ve learned to draw amazing flowers and I hung two giant Edison style pendant bulbs from ikea and I mean huge egg shaped dark glass bulbs that glow Amber at night with the giant filament. This is my least colorful room because I needed it to be calming, but it’s always interesting with chalk art. I draw my side, the husband draws on his side. I have beautiful flowers and my husband has a giant wizard arm reaching down with a finger extended like it’s tapping him on the head. It’s so absurd and yet so fun.
The kids bathrooms is done in a red and black flannel, log cabin feel with rustic wood and red/black checked lodge style shower curtain and geometric deer/bear heads as art on the walls. It’s to help them remember the trip we all took once to Great wolf Lodge in TX. It’s an amazing space…
Our master bath is soon going to be a deep deep peacock teal with wood accents as frames around windows, doors, and showers. I also have a copper and gold metallic pen that I’ll use to stencil in a fun line art pattern. Plan on finishing it off with boat hooks (like to wind rope on to secure sails, etc) as towel hangers. The counters are a faux white marble and I’m painting a giant nautical compass in the center of the ceiling.
I’ll never ever go back to a boring, colorless house again LOL this place literally breathes new life into us ever day.

I’d consider swapping the homeschool room for a multi-generational home library - the one thing I wished I had for the past 50 years. This is a place without a TV, but with comfortable places to do homework (which includes adult homework) or relax with a good book and a cup of tea. It’s also a good place to discuss business with guests such as your tax accountant, or someone doing work on your home. While so didn’t grow up with a library, there was one set of bookshelves in our living room that instilled in me the notion that my family valued reading, studying, knowledge, and intellectual growth as a regular and normal part of life at home. It’s a preference, of course, but one side love.

I think we need to remember the oldest Gen Zs are now 25-27 (depending on who you ask the start is) and starting their first home decor journey and they are going to be guiding the design movements for the rest of the decade and the 2030s. The couples who PURCHASED the houses on either side of mine are both under 30. 1) Small spaces are a fact of life due to economics, as is renting, so I believe that multifunctional spaces are here to stay for MANY years as is bold wallpaper since it is easy to remove and landlord compliant. 2) The 1970s and 1980s trends (whether older Millenials or Gen Xers, like me, like them or not) have less to do with nostalgia for younger Millenials and Gen Z and more to do with design reemergence. It might not mean much to us older home decor enthusiasts (which is what we are) but the new and upcoming renters didn't really have much exposure to the 70s anywhere. I really hope the bland, too much neutral, boring, minimalist, 2000-to-2020-era, Pottery-Barn-and-William-Sonoma-catalog look-a-like homes go far far away. Please.

I’m so thankful that Modern Farmhouse is phasing out. I have a hard time (as you mentioned) with farmhouse “dressing” in a space it doesn’t belong (penthouse, suburbia etc). The modern farmhouse aesthetic to me (having actually grown up on a dairy farm) was about posing as a farmhouse, not actually having the lifestyle of a home on a farm. My humble opinion is if you have to have a sign that SAYS farm fresh eggs, yet there are not farm fresh eggs on your counter from your chickens (or something of the like indicating ACTUALLY gardeners or farmers live there so you don’t need signs to brand your home as farmhouse… perhaps you could find something a little more authentic? My point (and strong irritation all along) is that a farmhouse doesn’t need to tell you it’s a farmhouse by screaming “I’m a farmhouse!”. It just IS and if you look around at the life being lived there it couldn’t be known as anything else. I’ve gone the past few years growing in loathing of “Modern Farmhouse”, thinking that WAS how farmhouses were being “feathered” at this point in history, BUT recently I realized a classic, timeless lovingly restored ACTUAL farmhouse leaves room for WAY more personality, more simplicity, more functionality, and often done in a MORE beautiful, pared down, modest way than a Modern Farmhouse would ever do for me. But that’s ME and MY humble opinion. 😁

A formative memory for me: When I asked the guy at the store to mix my paint he commented he never had anyone pick such a green before and asked if I was sure. I said yes bc it was for some little wooden boxes that sort the contents of my beloved green Ivar metal cabinets. He mixed the paint just going about his job, and went to put the dab of color on the lid like usual. He froze, staring at my fresh paint can in a trance like state for what had to be 2 whole minutes. I was about to ask if everything was alright when he snapped out of it saying, “Sorry about that ma’am, that’s just REALLY green. In my 10 years of owning this establishment I just well… I’ve never seen something THAT GREEN” and I burst into laughter so strong I started crying and he joined in realizing no offense was taken. That incident over my paint means Valspar’s Ivy League will forever exist in my home, because without a doubt, it’s green. It was spot on to match my cabinets and even just looks outright black in low light, yet Kelly green in sunlight. Jewel tones are very strange indeed and aren’t for the faint of heart. My home is straight from the glamour of the Great Gatsby and my stupidly green green works beautifully 🤣

At age 21, when I got my first apartment in the early 70's, the magazine, Apartment Life, was my bible. I was into dark chocolate carpet and walls and earth tones. I had a large ladder rack (made by my father) that I suspended in front of a floor to ceiling window where I hung over thirty plants (watering them was a big undertaking). There were Pier 1 bamboo shades on the windows and rattan bar stools. In the 80's, it was all about dried flowers, antique lace, antique furniture and Laura Ashley décor and clothes. There was also some country French in there, too, and there were definitely a lot of baskets.
I have definitely moved on and my tastes have changed. I now enjoy a more neutral palette and cleaner lines. Having said that, I have to admit that I took pleasure in some of those "trends" and the part that they played in my life over the years. Finally, sorry, Valentina, but I have bangs.

Cheryl Kavanagh...SAME!! Tho I'm not remembering Apartment Life, more like House Beautiful and other shelter mags. My design style was also shaped in the late 60's and 70's (including many of the things you mentioned!!). It has continued on all these years and beyond into today's millenia. I for some reason was wise enough to have purchased great antiques, really because they were cheap and it was what I could afford, many of which I refinished myself if they needed it tho always with a light hand to preserve the character and patina. American Primitives, like a great dry sink lined with the original tin that I put a huge plant in. Also a pine corner cabinet, I used to display a museum worthy (literally) collection of fine antique Native American baskets, pots, beadwork in, as well as a sizable collection of early Navaho and Saltillo rugs and blankets which I draped over sofas and on the floors even in the kitchen. I hung early quilts on the walls, they were on beds, folded in cabinets...all of which I purchased for a SONG at the local flea market. It was all very Ralph Lauren, Mary Emmerling-ish but I gravitated towards this look before I discovered them. I don't live out west, (but I worked in the Country Music business, which was fitting) and people in my area didn't really know the worth of these highly sought after pieces so I was able to buy low and many years later, sell high to finance my first home with a whopping down payment to keep my payment low. That is one of the benefits to purchasing good antiques, they not only hold their value but in the right market can be a great investment. I still have a number of my first pieces from the late 60's and 70's, but as you noted, my aesthetic also has changed over the decades. I could kick myself over somethings I sold but fortunately I have some professional photographs of my apt. that I lived in for 20 years!! My rent ranged from only $150 a month in 1971 to still only $450 some 20 years later! It is now $2,000 a month when I saw a sign and inquired. It was my most favorite place I ever lived, a large 2 bedroom, 3rd floor walk-up in an early 1900's building with hardwood floors and huge windows facing east, south and west! On one of the most beautiful streets in "Music City"! It looked out thru magnolias and maples and was dreamy and romantic beyond words! Sigh! Of course being young, foot loose and fancy free didn't hurt either!! Anyway, it is fun to reminisce about those days tho this may seem like much adieu about nothing to some. I have a feeling from your sweet recollections that you can relate with your own memories! I certainly enjoyed your highly relatable "word pictures" and it triggered some of my own. 😉👍!

The kitchen/dining area was wallpapered in HUGE orange, yellow, brown, and pink, yes pink! flowered wallpaper. The carpeting throughout the house was what we called Mexican Splash. It was a mixture of orange, yellow, black, brown, and beige splotches. We bought the house in 1983 and sold it in 1995. We gave the new owners a carpet allowance to put in what they wanted as we never did replace the carpet. My floors in my current home, an 1896 Victorian we bought in 1996, are hardwood. Trends themselves are here to stay, lol! It can be fun to be in-the-know, but it can be exhausting and expensive to try to keep up. Sometimes we can feel "less than" if we feel "outdated." So I try to be judicious when taking in this info and design/decorate so that my home is a reflection of me, a place my family feels comfortable and happy. Like Valentina said, knowing the current trends can be useful if wanting to renovate, restyle, or put a home on the market, esp for those looking for inspiration or those who are here looking for guidance. I think it's important to remember that we can just use touches of things or simply repaint to make changes while keeping the cost down. You can add touches of what's coming or keep touches of what's going out...whatever resonates with you! I love some aspects of the styles that are going out. For example, I love a few of the jewel tones at this time of year (October as I write this), like a deep plum or a burnt orange linen cover on a throw pillow. Using neutrals for the walls and the upholstered furniture makes it easy to change the feel of a room by changing the pillows, throw blankets, or even hanging artwork. A woven wall hanging has a 70s/boho vibe, but it also feels warm and cozy in winter months. Mixing it in with a more modern style can make a modern room feel cozier. Touches of these things are great ways to enjoy styles from decades past and keep cost down. But like you say, if someone really loves a particular style, then they should go for it...whatever makes them feel happy, calm, and "at home" because this is where we want to relax and renew ourselves. Valentina, I would love some videos on DIYs we can do at home to freshen our spaces, walls, etc...like some of the paintings you've done...while keeping costs down.

I agree the 70s are gone. I distinctly recall the active hatred of natural materials back then. Anything made of wood, wool, or cotton was "dated." If you've ever reno'd an older home, most of what you have to rip out is from that decade. I love maximalism, but higher-end maximalism. I think a wall full of cheap prints in Ikea frames, a dozen plants, and a hot pink table with mismatched chairs is trash-diver chic which, thanks to young people having to furnish apartments while paying sky high rent has become its own thing! But it gives true maximalism, which requires nice stuff and an amazing eye, a bad name.

The only things I really dislike are anything that looks really generic. My home is not fully open concept but I absolutely love it because I enjoy having a formal dining room and a sitting room. I think most people wouldn’t love my style, but as long as I like it and feel like I’m being true to myself I don’t mind. I so agree...eclecticism is the only "trend " to follow. I bring old and new into my home...the rule is do really love it and can the item blend. But it's usually easy because at age 74, im very confident in my style and tastes. The consistency is what works. If I separate items in a store (or even ad's from interior design mags) into what I truly love and what i truly dislike, as long as I choose from the first group , it will work in my home! I don't even think about palette any more. Things from the "I love it" section will automatically be colors that will blend I've never loved periwinkle ( maybe in ribbons for my hair) or purple, except in food. If I'm consistent in my choices is easy-to-use blend. For example, I have a more modern, mid-century look in my living spaces. But my gorgeous, walnut and mahogany Italian refectory table ( garage sale item from 80's) has a place under the window smaller window
in my living room. Not sure that I'm doing a good job making my point, lol.
This is my first time checking out Valentina's site. I'm curious about your spaces visible on camera.
is there any color at all in your home? It's clear that 70's , 80,s and 90's would never be on the "Love it" side for you. You make my point: know yourself, commit to your own tastes and your home should be beautiful. Your house seems totally consistent .
And never make apologies for what you love and choose.

Stop with the 16oz coffee cups!

That's funny, I guess the cup designers don't drink coffee! Kinda like I always have to throw in my 2 cents when I go to buy a major appliance, tho it has gotten better. Still you can pretty much tell they, refrigerators especially bad, were designed by men /people who never cleaned one in their life! For years the shelves had little waffle-ish dimples on the top side of the shelves. If you spilled say like a jar of jelly or anything sticky, you'd have to remove the entire shelf and soak and scrub it with a brush! Utter insanity! They finally did get the message! There are still engineering faux pas with just about every appliance. People nowdays do make their voices heard in review sections, and things like this. Manufacturers would do well to take note cause bad reviews can result in thousands of $$$s of lost sales! Anyway, I'm on a rant and rave tangent...down with the biggy size mugs.... P.S. I don’t want to insult anyone but I can’t live in an all white, sterile minimalistic neutral world. As I get older and wiser I need layers, some color and textures. Things that are comforting and cozy to me. Things that have a story or a history and make me happy just looking at them.

I didn't get the first point because Vogue magazine in an article wrote about dual purpose rooms being a good trend that is here to stay. With a lot of people burdened with inflation, high interest rates, exorbitant rents, we gotta make most of the spaces we are in. Sometimes my living room will become my yoga studio in the morning..

I have two large wool Heriz rugs that match the room @19:46. I just built a new house and I am going to incorporate the rugs. My interior designer used primarily the primary colors with pops of brighter colors on the art. It’s traditional. I’m going to keep it. My designer is retired at 83 and I miss her visions of making my furnishings work no matter where we move. Thanks for the update.

Very Peri? Eeeeewwwww. Never been a trend gal. I have ALWAYS leaned into neutrals with a tad of green, which is why I LOVE your channel. I painted my dining room a darker, neutral/muted green a few years ago and it's the only color on my walls anywhere. Again, we have to do what we like and to heck with what's "in or out". Great content as usual V!

Great content as always! Not a big fan of trends. When I was 16 (in the 80s) I wanted to paint my bedroom black - lol my mom overruled me. Also, since the pandemic, I've been working remotely from home and will continue as our office spaces are being pared down drastically. So I'll be moving my temp work from my bedroom to another room and making it full office. I need the separation and don't want my bedroom to be a multi-use space unless it's for cozying up in a chair to read or crochet 😁

I think people will think I'm redoing my house in 2022 trends. Sage green walls, purple and green accents. While I'm using the green trend as "permission", it's not that - they're just my favourite colours 😂 (the big pieces are all neutral - wood and beige)

I feel you are incorrect with the home office. I’ve had a home office since the late 1980s. This room has always been it’s own room in the last four houses we’ve built. It’s definitely smaller in my current home but every inch useful and lux. I have several coworkers with a giant network of others who all work at home with the need of a separate room due to our type of work. Anyway I doubt that is going away anytime soon.

As an artist, I love colour, but yet since my home has always been styled in neutrals, I thought that I must have been a bit rubbish at designing my home using colour.
It has taken many years to realise that my home is decorated in the colours which I like to wear, and so has always been perfectly styled to suit me and not a trend.
In a world obsessed with throwing out one's own nose and getting a new one, it's important to love one's self and one's home and not be a slave to the rhythm of social media fads.
Thank you Valentina for showing us that our homes can be fresh, exciting and rejuvenating but equally encouraging us to aim to live sustainably, embrace diversity and stay true to one's self. x👏💞👏x

  • @vanakamtsiou3089

I don't think maximalist will go out. People are becoming more and more free to live in a house that reflects them as individuals, what makes them feel good, being as unique as themselves and not looking like museums or store catalogues. The key to maximalist is to use feelings as a guide to build your spaces. How do you want the spaces to feel? What kind of stories you want to tell? People are discovering that living with colour can be very enjoyable if they are their favourite colours. Living with your favourite objects that you love can also be very sentimental and warm. Besides it is so much fun and creative to curate it all and become the director of your personal stories. Hunting for treasures in antique and thrift shops that you will love looking at them every signal day, remembering exactly the day you discovered them. Mixing all kinds of patterns, shapes, colours, styles like creating a beautiful painting that is also a kind of a portrait of your being.

  • @anneann9127

To parrot a few other replies, decorate in what you feel comfortable in. Trends can sometimes lead us to find things that we would love to have around us. I just painted a room in hunter green and I love it, loved it in the 90s and still love it today. I love wood trim or white trim depending on the climate you live in. Wood trim is great for the northern states and white trim is great for the southern regions of the states. I'm not in love with the super dark painted trim like gray or black, that feels like something I would be over in a few years! Paint is pretty easy to change out. I think finding the furniture pieces that you love and decorating around them is best.

I disagree that multi functional rooms are not going to be trendy because they're necessary for families especially with young children. That's kind of what urban living consists of, apartments, condos etc. Don't get me started on those of us that don't have control of space because it is incredibly annoying lol. Inflation is also still very high for the average person. First spend on what you need & if it's a good price, get what you want. Ps: nope on the berry perry.

A person who has style is always aware of the trends. Like clothing fashion, your decor foundation should be full of classics in your preferred design style, but trends should be introduced carefully with low stake items to keep a home/space current. Slip covers, throw blankets, duvet covers, throw pillow covers, vases, and storage boxes are all low stakes places to play with trends, as these wear out, or can be easily thrifted.
