    Hi JD. Worked in fasteners for many many years. They actually stretch more than you would think, and you should never reuse nuts, lock nuts, or split lock washers. They lose all their effectiveness after use.

    Can;t belive you are using crescent wrenches. Use the correct wrenches and sockets.

  • @kevinculbertson7623
    @kevinculbertson7623 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Just a suggestion for you. If you use just a single socket, not a flip socket with an extension, you will loose a lot less torque from your impact driver. I’m sure you already knew that though. Lots of years of being a mechanic talking there. Love the channel sir. Keep up the great content!

  • @robert281979
    @robert281979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    JD, just an FYI. Just my thoughts... On the Demco hitch, you should use 4 bolts on it instead of the 2 long bolts. Here is the reasoning behind it. The hitch you took off, is solid across the top, across the bolt holes, where the Demco is not. The Demco has a "cut out" portion, thus it is more susceptible to "ball side load" when turning. That's why it came with 4 bolts. Maybe that is something you can look into and maybe cover in a video?

    • @ericwright3382
      @ericwright3382 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree 100%. The coupler has the words cast into it... use 4 bolts. I was betting you would change tactic to use 4 after the undoing was a hastle... and that they supplied the hardware.

  • @homergarcia376
    @homergarcia376 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The reason for it being so tight is to keep the coupler from rattling. It squeezed the channel around the coupler. If you look closely the channel is a little squeezed in from the first coupler.

    • @tonydeluca178
      @tonydeluca178 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Exactly! It’s suppose to hug it tightly. The coupler should not rattle whatsoever.

  • @kmath8321
    @kmath8321 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    JD, being that there is nothing between the mounting holes of the new hitch, I would use the 4 bolts. By doing it this way it will be solid on the trailer with no slop not to mention stronger. Just a thought and suggestion.

    • @preachers4135
      @preachers4135 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But upgrade the bolts to at least grade 8. I’m surprised a trailer couple comes with grade 5 hardware and makes me wonder where else they choose to skimp out on things.

    Great video, I just ordered this same latch for my new Texas Pride Trailer. My other Texas Pride Trailer which I took delivery of on November 2021 already had the Demco EZ latch installed from factory. I like it so much that I ordered one given that my new trailer will come with that other system. The Texas Pride representative from the Perris location told me they can’t get Demco because of “ supply issues”. Who knows.

    That turned out to be some project that was unexpected. I like that auto coupling hitch. I can’t use it because I don’t have the hitch that will bolt in like your trailer JD. Thanks for the video I got a chuckle from watching you and your buddy working on that project.

    These couplers are great for the average user, for the guys that use it every single day a ball hitch is not near strong enough or convenient enough for multiple hookups and detaches, a pintle ring is the best way to go a pintle ring with the hook style not the ball style is nice and tight and is extremely durable

    • @Alex.AL_26

      I agree a good pintle hitch is very durable, can handle abuse better than most couplers and is a great option in off-road conditions but man-o-man the banging and clanging is enough to drive a man to other options.

    The reason they send 4 bolts & nuts with the coupler is so you can squeeze the sides of the female channel to the sides of the coupler and not have the coupler rattle in the mounting channel. The squeeze between the channel sides and the coupler is part of the design strength of the 21,000 lbs. rating, One other thing to watch for is adjustable channel on trailers are not all the same width inside. There are 2 standard width female channels in the industry one is approx. 2.9" ID and the other is approx. 3" ID. It is important to make sure you are using the correct coupler in the correct mounting channel so when the bolts are torqued the coupler is tight. That is why the kit came with a mounting channel to ensure the proper fit. It you mount a narrow coupler into a wider channel a thin flat washer along one side to take up the gap will help to reduce rattle of a loose coupler. About 150 ft. lbs. torque on the 5/8" mounting
    bolts for Grade 5 bolts.

    Those bolts need the proper torque. If they are grade 8 I would torque them down to a minimum of 140 ft. Lb. Probably 180. As someone else mentioned don’t reuse lock washers or lock nuts. I never use lock washers myself. I have seen way to many break and then you loose your clamp load.

    We have a trailer here at work and we had to adjust a couple on it and trying to get the bolts loose it was crazy I think we torqued ours at 120 ft lb but I was going to warn you keep an eye on your bolts whenever you haul in the trailer and stuff we have had them where they break the bolt heads off and you got to replace the bolts

  • @danielbanks2366

    Fyi, demco recommends 225 ft-lbs on those 5/8 grade 8 bolts. I have the same coupler on my trailer, super easy to hook up

  • @aaronschinlaub9704
    @aaronschinlaub9704 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    And that's just from the load of hauling on the trailer we never exceed over 12,000 lb in the trailers are 16,000 but every now and then we'll have a bolt head break off guess it just must be from the weight and bouncing on the trailer and I know 12,000 lb is pretty well maxing out of trailer that is 16,000 so it is kind of at the max but not all the weights up on the hitch it's on the middle of the trailer in the axles we haul water on them and spray gravel with them

    The four individual bolts would be better than the two longer bolts. Also, Grade 8 will give you zero warning before they fail. If you have an impact or something, the Grade 8 might snap while the Grade 5's would just bend or stretch.

    Adjustable wrenches were never ever made to turn a nut/bolt torqued anywhere near as tight as that bolt is and as tight as those bolts should be tightened to. And grade eight bolts can really be tightened to high torques. And for a trailer that size, designed to haul as much weight a trailer like that is made for should be really really tight if you do not want enough slack to allow movement in the hitch assembly. Movement causes wear which causes it to become even looser and cause even more wear.
