JEFF, I was wondering when you would get to this one. It is probably my favorite Snarky Puppy tune in a while. It has everything composition and performance wise, and emotionally speaking just leaves me happy and smiling. Michael League is a genius, and the guys are just SUPER talented! This song has been an earworm since I heard it 20 seconds after the release!! Thanks for the reaction... you are the man!
The more times you listen to this, the better it gets! You mentioned Larnells roll towards the end of the song... the fill. I noticed the 3 drummers taking turns playing snare and kick for different passages with the other two guys playing "zones"; highhats and crash cymbals or tom fills and off-beat stuff on the cymbals. Just REALLY great coordination between 3 pros; Larnell, "JT" Thomas, and the youngster Jamison Ross. Just a REALLY great performance by this ensamble!
Absolutely ridiculous. All that talent and they leave egos at the door. The drum section😳😂 what in the world! Incredible!!! Thank you for the reaction!
Yeah Jeff, thanks, just another awesome Snarky track. It doesn't have the fireworks of Lingus or What About Me, but just a smooth, feel good groove all the way through. Empire Central, which will be released in full next month, has a shuffle tune called "R/L's" which I think you'll really like too.
Yep, another super fun tune (I had to do a transcription, just obsessed). It's a really interesting composition in so many ways - the basic material is pretty straightforward but there are so many small tweaks, and as always, the arrangement / orchestration is brilliant.
It's totally fine to have several drummers switching and stacking when you have a percussion ensemble that holds everything together like super glue. Hats off to the percussionists! They hardly get any love from us listeners.
I love how these guys communicate through music, how they communicate with each other, the way they layer sounds without muddying everything up. And still each listen brings something new that I hadn't heard before. I have a feeling Empire Central is going to be on REPEAT for quite a while! Jeff to help you on your Bob Reynolds rabbit hole dive, do check out Bob Reynolds Guitar Band - all 6 songs are fabulous. He also has his TH-cam channel and one of my favorite things was seeing his behind the scenes when Snarky Puppy did the Immigrance album - so cool to see their process and how all that chaotic energy transforms into incredible music.
Hey thanks for mentioning Bob Reynolds “Recording of Immigrance” series. I’m new to Snarky Puppy and have had so many questions. How the create such amazing music, how they learn and record all this stuff and no sheet music!? Fascinating to see these videos and get some answers. Great stuff! I’m on a new music journey. Snarky Puppy at Royal Albert Hall next!
If you havent seen it already, you should react to a performance from the Bob Reynolds Guitar Band called Can't Wait for Perfect. Awesome live performance with a killer long form Mark Lettieri solo.
Hey bro, there is this song called Belmont on the (Empire Central Project) that has an instrument that we don`t see much, taken a very very nice solo, especially in a band this size .I know you will be blown away once you React to it!!
Hi Kenneth! Ya I JUST uploaded my reaction to it on Patreon as an early release (to post on Sept. 20). I’ll be posting it to TH-cam eventually. I really enjoyed it! Zach Brock is awesome! 👏👏👏
I am going make an allusion to the Rippingtons....a group that I truly admire. But Snarky Puppy brings that genre to much higher technical level and with more voice and energy.
Michael actually said that he brought this song to the recording sessions as a pure funk piece and thought it was too 'simple' for Snarky Puppy but that he didn't have much else so he brought it anyways. The other band members just worked with what Michael brought and added the Brazilian elements etc.
Always good comments from your extensive experience base. I'm always amazed at how many people they get playing together yet it never feels cramped or that people are stepping on each other. I've been pleased lately to see you reacting to some less well known musicians (for instance "Drift Lab" at least to me). In that spirit I wanted to suggest a fantastic Hungarian guitarist named Mike Gotthard. Plays a lot of really great fusion and in this particular cut has Gergo Borlai on drums. This is one of those musicians I'd love to see get more recognition stateside and that made me think of you. Hope you can find time-if not for a reaction- at least for a listen. He and his group are really a good listen. Best wishes. th-cam.com/video/ZsBRZDBAoAo/w-d-xo.html
I haven't figured out how they use two drummers who manage not to clash with each other. And I can't understand why two drummers are necessary, especially when there's percussion. Any thoughts?
From JT one of the drummers in response to a similar question: "... it's about sonic options. Same thing we do with guitars/keys and perc players. The 3 drummer started with Culcha Vulcha(though only 2 of us at a time per song). We thought it was a blast, so we've kept it. Basically our answer to your question is, Why Not! I say it all the time, Drummers are Musicians Too! Nobody says why have multiple horn players/guitar players/keyboardist/etc etc...."
I've NEVER seen a band so happy to be playing together...
hahah so true!
Choices. So many players making such perfect choices..

Just 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😅🙂🙃🙂😍🥰. Thank you so much for making a reaction to this one as well with Snarky Puppy🥰💚🤗.
Thanks, Jeff. It's amazing how so many players can stay locked in to the groove together.
It really is amazing 🤩

I’m late to this Snarky game I LOVE it. Who writes all their stuff? I would think they collaborate??
The main guy is the bass player Michael League but a few of them contribute to the writing!
Thank you! That’s kind of what I though, glad for the confirmation!
I am going make an allusion to the Rippingtons....a group that I truly admire. But Snarky Puppy brings that genre to much higher technical level and with more voice and energy.
Us: "Hey Michael League....can Snarky Puppy do Brazilian?" Snarky Puppy: "Hold our beers."
😂🤣😂👏👏👏

Tio Macaco is also hugely influenced by Brazilian music
I would like to see you explore Cory Wong and his band Cory Wong and the Wong Notes.

Mike League likes what each of the (3) drummers bring to the ensemble. So they work it out as to who is going to take the lead on each phrase.
