No, he is a Gift of Nature. Sadly. all too many have this type of ability, but never find their niche, until it's too late, if ever. And I have met some so gifted, it was never too late. My grandmother played piano her whole life. Her first job was playing piano at a Silent Theater. It was a competitive interview. She went first. Every other applicant heard her, sighed, got up, and walked out. Except for one lady. Who had walked in, saw her, and said, "Oh. Good luck, Sally." and walked back out. But, that isn't the point of this story. After my grandfather passed, grandma started teaching again. One day, a lady of my grandma's age came to her, and said, "Teach me." So, grandma did. In 3 months, this woman was playing Chopin scores that she was seeing for the first time.
Consider me an inspired 52 year old drummer who has been playing for 42 years. Quitting is just so weak and almost impossible to respect. Greats should never cause anyone to quit. Quitting is very character revealing.
@@respectfullydisagree711 I respectfully disagree.... ;) Sometimes people don't really know if something is for them until they give it a shot, it shouldn't be considered a weakness for someone to stop pursuing something they are no longer truly enjoying. Also, I suspect the original comment was more of a light-hearted joke than something to be taken too seriously. That said, I do agree with you about the part that "greats should never cause anyone to quit" because comparison is the thief of joy, as they say, and everyone potentially has something unique to offer.

I’m a bass player and was so amazed at the original version I found this reaction video from a real drummer. What a great lesson in musicality and developing the ability to chart as fast (and accurately) as possible even away from the instrument if needed!
You love the instrumental, then you love the drummer who fills that track, then you love the other drummer's reaction(his joy in his facial expressions) to the first drummer playing..a tiny spiral of positiveness.

I first heard Larnell several years ago when he was a last-minute sub for a CD release party in Toronto. I’m not even sure if it was kit. But the gig was in a funky art gallery. Our seats were literally six feet from the kit (shallow “stage” on the floor that went from the kit on the right to double bass, baby grand piano and singer). I’d always liked the drums to some extent, having played in high school. Jazz was okay to me, depending on the artist and song. But that evening made my mind explode. Larnell had never even rehearsed with the band. There were hushed conversations little longer than a football huddle and off they went. I’d never seen or heard anything so plugged in, so intuitive, so dynamic or so intimately wired into the soul of a song in my life. And I’ve been a massive fan ever since. Spoken to him very briefly a couple of times and he is SO humble that it almost hurts. And he’s always learning and sharing. I'm not lying when I say I had the shivers on this performance from the start to finish. He is just on another level. This is what true musician looks and sounds like.
Honestly tragic how we've cut funding music and arts programs. Im in neither of those fields but for me music has goten me through so much and whats more, having hobbies/newly discovered passions can change one's life for the better. This was awesome to watch; both Larnell and your reaction Mr. Rooney, great stuff
This is so true, we've funneled the youth into mindless education, memorize this memorize that. Very few schools encourage their students to pursue their hobbies and passions. Imagine all the amazing forms of art and music we'd have now if children at a young age are encouraged to pursue their passions.
“Lifelong commitment to music, not just drumming but music” is about as apt a description of an example of musicianship at this level as I’ve ever heard
Dude, this is the first time I've seen you. But i love how you respond and respect this dude. Your cut to the guy with tears; and that was how I thought you were feeling before the clip showed up.😆 I had to stop watching and write my comment. Dude, you seem like a great guy and soooo in love with 🎵🎶. I'm just starting at playing guitar at 60. You and that guy on the video really inspire me. Be blessed, ✌🏼🦁
When I first saw this clip I think I watched it three times--at least the final performance by Larnell. He's truly one of the absolute greats--not only for his technical skills but the tastiness to how he approaches it. You nailed it on the head by calling him a musician, not just a drummer.
Hello from France ! I'm an old beginner drumer (6 years from the start and 41 years old now) and I enjoyed a lot the original video. Your react video is really nice too. You seem to be a nice guy, and you make me think about my drum teacher who's an incredible man. Learning, hearing, understanding is all about his ways of teaching. It's never too late to start practicing music, so you all : no excuse ! Thanks again for your video. Gauthier
Yeah - the Snarky Puppy “We Like it Here” story about Larnell is legendary. This guy was born to play. The way he can improvise while sitting in the deepest part of the pocket is nuts.
I have never even played a drum in my life but I really enjoy your channel man.. love watching a truly talented person's jaw drop when they get to watch a god play so truly clean and effortlessly.. I think one of his parents must have been a drum.... Baaadabum
Wow, that's amazing. I don't even play drums or any instrument nor am I musical in any way but was still mindblown and not only appreciated this guy but appreciated your appreciation of him lol. Such precision in a short amount of time. What a skill and talent.
This is super impressive. I saw Larnell play Enter Sandman at TH-cam after 1 listening without pencil. He did a great job. If you like drums, Larnell and/or Metal, listen to that one as well.
Yes, that was awesome! I’ve listened to it a ton since it was added to Drumeo. (10 times, just tonight). Edited to add: He did say that it was the 2nd take, though.
@@nadogrl Yeah he said "take 2" which I wasn't sure if he meant that was technically his second listen or second performance because he did a "pass." The reactions and his commentary make it seem like he only did one full performance
The intro emulated the sax then broke of into a samba jam he’s so technically proficient at playing sounds & theory helps him weave in and out of music with ease. Bravo!
again, what a talent!!! without a doubt, knows his jazz, and so much that has come before!!! Know your stuff, your musical influences, know them well, it pays off!!
He's incredible obviously. Playing a chart that smooth and on time after listening only once is ridiculous. And he's wearing a pair of Vans hi-tops, so he's beyond cool.
I really love seeing your reaction videos, especially your thoughts and reactions towards it. You have so much experiences that shows a deeper understanding on what's happening in that vid. give me more!
I always love hearing drums on these kinds of genre (jazz if im not mistaken) because from the judgement of my ears they are the ones which have alot of change in beats.
Absolutely incredible! You can tell the difference between a musician hearing the music and a drummer playing the song. A HUGE difference. I would bring in a friend (bassist), Ron Jenkins playing the bass part on a song and then having me (primary inst. guitar) play bass on the same tune. Ron would make it sound like he had played the song all his life when the first he heard it was his first time through to hear it. I could’ve practiced it for a week and still have user errors. Ron is not only the best bassist I’ve ever played with but he’s a great guy to just hang out with. Each night we played was like sitting front row w/Victor Wooten. I never wanted the night to end! 🎵🎶❤️😷🤘
Man when you stopped that video after the first intro, I knew you was a REAL one cause I felt the same way. How did he do that after listening to the song like two times? That intro with the toms was ridiculously clean
Yes, I was wondering at the beginning if I'm listening to a Chick Corea song, and then I heard the piece from Spain. By the way he passed away on the 9th of February. :( Rest in peace legend.
One of my favorite "local" bands, The Midnight Devils, was booked for the Rocklahoma music festival one year. Their drummer was so strung out on drugs that they had to fire him. They met another drummer who learned their entire playlist (all original stuff) in one day and has been with the band ever since.
Just learnt about Larnell Lewis last night and have been binging his videos and as soon as I heard you counting I had to check if you were from NZ love it
We’re on stage in half an hour and our drummer is sick, what are we gonna do. Hold up is it a bird is it a plane no it’s Larnell Lewis, HERE I DRUM TO SAVE THE DAY
I took drum lessons for a year or so as a child but didn't stick with it because i couldn't get passionate about it. I pursued other passions in my life and I totally get your enthusiasm and excitement while watching Larnell play. I get the same goosebumps and mindblowing euphoria watching people who are good at the things I'm interested in showing their mastery. This was a really great video. I think I'm probably too old and too stretched thin to pick up an instrument in my life but I really enjoyed watching this. Thank you for posting!
This is legit the first time I’ve watched any of these videos. I tend to stay away from those “teacher reviews” or the like due to them being somewhat opinionated. Nothing wrong with that, just not something I want to watch. But I gave this a chance, and I’m so not disappointed. I’m an instant subscriber to this channel now. Well spoken, non opinionated and just all around feels like I’m having a conversation with the host. Now, about Larnell, the dude is a monster. I’ve never known anyone that can do this…learn a new song in one listen and just kill it perfectly. I’ve done probably a hundred gigs in my life where I had a day or two to learn a couple tunes and it was stressful. Larnell makes it look fun, and easy. But I know in now way could I learn something this absolutely intricately difficult and play it with such perfection with such amazing orchestration. Blows my mind to watch him play any time I see him.
Dont usually comment too much but this is what I heard Planned an into of drums into the piece Next was to enhance /build around the core instrument which was the sax. Then allows the sax to lead while the drums fall back. During the refrain drums jump back in to contribute to the piece Keeps up with the sax as to say drums can stick with the sax During the organ solo, it was like the drums were a train and the organ was a whistle going from town to town, Drums fall back with the guitar solo almost playfully Before the piece enters the build, drums get a say in the piece with a solo,,,
I'm not a drummer.. but I'm a jazz head... the way everything provides the backbone for the song, and emphasize the solo while being groovy and cool as fuck... chefs kiss...
LOL, and Thank You Andrew! I have watched this a few times on other channels, but you nailed what I could not figure out; Chick Corea's post "Romantic Warrior" sound from my "70's college days! Bravo to you and the incredible musicianship and fearlessness of Larnell in tackling this challenge.
OK seriously??? Your title way undersold this. I was expecting to hear something like a rock or metal song with fairly straightforward stuff going on and then just cover it. I was not expecting a jazz piece with tons of nuance and him actually creating a drum part. I'm a lifelong violinist who is "pretty good" at drums on Rock Band (the game), so I at least can appreciate the insane level of talent here.

Glad you enjoyed it!
This is world class musicianship
I was known, in high school, to learn songs very fast but this.. This is at a stratospheric new level! I'm completely in awe and humbled!
Hard to fathom this level of musician
I'm not lying when I say I had the shivers on this performance from the start to finish. He is just on another level. This is what true musician looks and sounds like.
Yes Samuel! It's just a thing of beauty. Bringing a track to life like that WOW
I get really emotional from beautiful skilled music, his performance had me misty eyed the whole time.
You can tell that man lives and breathes music, and has since he could hold a drumstick.
I need to hear Larnell Lewis, Tosin Abasi, and Victor Wooten make an album.
My band wouldn't survive this...
WOW- that would be the ultimate
You want to end every other musician's career?
YES
Or make a 👶🏾 🍼.
Ain't even just music and arts...sports, almost anything not exam related have seen funding drop.
Your stank face when he started playing was gold! Great to see other drummer reactions to Larnell's ability 👌🏾
“Lifelong commitment to music, not just drumming but music” is about as apt a description of an example of musicianship at this level as I’ve ever heard
Dude, this is the first time I've seen you.
But i love how you respond and respect this dude.
Your cut to the guy with tears; and that was how I thought you were feeling before the clip showed up.😆
I had to stop watching and write my comment.
Dude, you seem like a great guy and soooo in love with 🎵🎶.
I'm just starting at playing guitar at 60.
You and that guy on the video really inspire me.
Be blessed,
✌🏼🦁
Thank you so much Leo. I appreciate your comments :)
When I first saw this clip I think I watched it three times--at least the final performance by Larnell. He's truly one of the absolute greats--not only for his technical skills but the tastiness to how he approaches it. You nailed it on the head by calling him a musician, not just a drummer.
Your love and respect blew me away. You love the drums for sure.
Gauthier
Great to hear Gauthier!
Yeah - the Snarky Puppy “We Like it Here” story about Larnell is legendary. This guy was born to play. The way he can improvise while sitting in the deepest part of the pocket is nuts.
You nailed it
I have never even played a drum in my life but I really enjoy your channel man.. love watching a truly talented person's jaw drop when they get to watch a god play so truly clean and effortlessly..
My god….I could fall asleep just listening to his voice,so clam! His drumming and impro is amazing.
Thank you. It was a pure and refreshing moment of shared happiness.
GREAT!
He was a drum set in a previous life. 🥁 Knowledge and ridiculous feel no doubt.
YES!
I love how he's so humble about it too, the absolute cyborg
Yup!
The intro emulated the sax then broke of into a samba jam he’s so technically proficient at playing sounds & theory helps him weave in and out of music with ease. Bravo!
Yes Don!
again, what a talent!!! without a doubt, knows his jazz, and so much that has come before!!! Know your stuff, your musical influences, know them well, it pays off!!
You got it Douglas!
He's incredible obviously. Playing a chart that smooth and on time after listening only once is ridiculous. And he's wearing a pair of Vans hi-tops, so he's beyond cool.
He's painting a music by beating 'em drums. A true work of a master. Amazing!!!
I really love seeing your reaction videos, especially your thoughts and reactions towards it. You have so much experiences that shows a deeper understanding on what's happening in that vid. give me more!
Thank you so much Martinus!!
What a class act Larnell is, such a humble soft spoken guy.. And out of this world drumming talents.. Phenomenal video!
I always love hearing drums on these kinds of genre (jazz if im not mistaken) because from the judgement of my ears they are the ones which have alot of change in beats.
That feeling you get when you watch someone do something that you thought you were really good at way better than you've ever done it.
The sound from those TOMS on this video is out of bounds tight. So good.
Yes Alexander. His sound is literally perfect. Every note sounds like a sample
Isn’t it wonderful! Art! 💯👌
Man when you stopped that video after the first intro, I knew you was a REAL one cause I felt the same way. How did he do that after listening to the song like two times? That intro with the toms was ridiculously clean
Ooh...”Chick’s Pain...Chick Spain.” It’s a play on words
Yup Theo!
OOoooooo. Nice catch
cheeks pain too
Yes, I was wondering at the beginning if I'm listening to a Chick Corea song, and then I heard the piece from Spain.
Just learnt about Larnell Lewis last night and have been binging his videos and as soon as I heard you counting I had to check if you were from NZ love it
Excellent!
We’re on stage in half an hour and our drummer is sick, what are we gonna do.
Hold up is it a bird is it a plane no it’s Larnell Lewis, HERE I DRUM TO SAVE THE DAY
It's so fun watching master's work. Even a pro like you breaking down another pro, it's so awesome and fills in so many inquisitive holes I have
This guys dynamics are so tasty.
Yes. Beautiful!!
Chop nasty
The reference in the second solo was Spain. a great number played by many artist
Terence Fletcher couldn't even find anything wrong with this. INSANE.
Not quite my tempo. 😂
Played once to learn the track.
Played a second time to know the track.
Absolutely crushed it!! Everything so tight.
GREAT to hear.
Thanks for the kind words. Hope you enjoy the rest of the channel :)
Dont usually comment too much but this is what I heard
Planned an into of drums into the piece
Next was to enhance /build around the core instrument which was the sax.
Then allows the sax to lead while the drums fall back.
During the refrain drums jump back in to contribute to the piece
Keeps up with the sax as to say drums can stick with the sax
During the organ solo, it was like the drums were a train and the organ was a whistle going from town to town,
Drums fall back with the guitar solo almost playfully
Before the piece enters the build, drums get a say in the piece with a solo,,,
I couldn't even find the beat when listening to the raw track. Man is a genius.
Unreal skill
It's so amazing to see someone that fully understands music with a mastery of the drums. You sir are a wizard!
Yup!
His pure joy and unbounded delight is matched only by his stank face.
I'm not a drummer.. but I'm a jazz head... the way everything provides the backbone for the song, and emphasize the solo while being groovy and cool as fuck... chefs kiss...
I'm not a drummer, but I definitely understand the complexity of this and it's FUCKING CRAZY
Yes it's crazy
Beautiful
LOL, and Thank You Andrew! I have watched this a few times on other channels, but you nailed what I could not figure out; Chick Corea's post "Romantic Warrior" sound from my "70's college days! Bravo to you and the incredible musicianship and fearlessness of Larnell in tackling this challenge.
1st time looking at andrew and he seems really genuine and passionate...
HEY Jose! Thanks for watching brother!
i liked watching you stretch out the frustration of how good he was each fill.
HAHA
OK seriously??? Your title way undersold this. I was expecting to hear something like a rock or metal song with fairly straightforward stuff going on and then just cover it. I was not expecting a jazz piece with tons of nuance and him actually creating a drum part. I'm a lifelong violinist who is "pretty good" at drums on Rock Band (the game), so I at least can appreciate the insane level of talent here.
Pretty special player Richard!!!
Check out Snarky Puppy for more absolutely dank and ridiculously filthy drumming by Larnell. He's one of the greats.

Fellow Rock Band drummer and real life guitarist/bassist here. I can not agree more.
