      He’s got them, but only used them for putting on the rings with the new gears @14:45. The original rings don’t have holes in the ears so you just have to finagle them off however you can.

      @tomtheplumber7322, I was thinking the same thing. The rounded tips on those pliers are designed to fall off the way he’s trying to use them. If he pointed them straight down they’d work better.

    Great video man thanks! This video gave the courage to try to replace mine, they were just as bad as yours! 😅 I ordered the gears and it turned out they were smaller! They are 38mm and I need something around 45mm (I can’t measure the exact diameter ‘cause the teeth are busted). It’s an MXUS motor, do you guys know what size is the correct one? The originals are 15mm width and 8mm center diameter.

    thanks for this helpful video. Only thing i might mention is you should not use petroleum based grease on plastics as a general rule, it can cause some to go brittle or soften, depending on plastic type. maybe nylon is not affected i dont know but just to be safe it would be wise to use lithium grease like the manufacturers do and one less thing to worry about.

    ive noticed alot of similar problems from these hub motors, what i think is happening is the lack of grease from the factories, thats the one common thing they all share is not enuff grease, and i think its causing it to get super hot and causing premature failure of the gears as they are over stressed, also tell your boy he put the gears upside down, they do have an orientation, and it matters cuz some of them when you put it upside down they dont catch the entire teeth in the hub shell, and some times the gears have a harder time spinning freely cuz theres not enuff clearance with the clutch

    • @flosa1995
      @flosa1995 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These nylon gears last longer until they start tearing and are on purpose plastic
      Because then just the gears break, now your housing is also at risk for being grinded up
      Doing partly metal and plastic gears/teeth is common practice to avoid breaking everything
      So better switch back to nylon unless you don't care about that motor

It is making noise and the bike doesnt move when I hit the throttle. These bums at ecotric told me to make a video to prove it's defective. I made the video. They said they accept the return . But they are going to charge me a 20 % restocking fee. Ridiculous. They sent me a defective wheel n i have to pay a restocking fee wow. It sounds like I have the same problem it sounds like it's the gears are jacked up in the motor . I feel like if it's not that expensive to change the gear wheels I might as well keep it n pay the little extra money to get it fixed . Instead of losing money for restocking it . I'm scared to open motor , thinking they might know I opened it , and come up with some nonese to take more money off if I send it back . Can you tell me how much it would cost if that is the problem . I think it would be worth it to come from Brooklyn to bring the wheel to his shop . Can you give me a quote please . Why didn't you replace the nylon gears with metal gears? I just bought my first ebike and it has nylon gears. This is probably going to happen to mine over time, I was thinking when the time comes to replace them, I might replace them with metal ones but might run the risk of damaging the whole motor instead of just the gears haha. Any thoughts on metal gear replacements?

    • @47f0
      @47f0 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As far as I can tell the only downside to metal gears is they are significantly more noisy.

    • @dawsonmobley
      @dawsonmobley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you put metal gears in you run the risk of eventually breaking something else that's much harder to replace and\or expensive to replace. Those plastic spider gears are probably an engineered failure point because they are cheap and "easy" to replace and protect the rest of the drivetrain.

    • @47f0
      @47f0 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dawsonmobley - What other more expensive parts could we be protecting?
      If the motor seizes, the nature of the drivetrain is that the wheel will continue to coast - that's built in. If the wheel seizes, from picking up a stick jammed in the spokes or some other catastrophe, the controller should detect an immediate overload and shut down power.
      If protecting against some sort of a stress failure was the goal, that could have been accomplished much more easily and cheaply with a simple shear pin on the sun gear output shaft without having a bunch of chewed up plastic gear teeth getting into everything.
      When KitchenAid was an actual company, a subsidiary of Hobart, their consumer kitchen stand mixers used metal gears in their transmissions. When Hobart sold the rights to the KitchenAid brand, all the sudden those $300 mixers started using plastic gears. They were quieter, but reports of failure are much much higher.
      I have seen a lot of planetary gear systems. None of them were designed to fail. But some of them weren't designed very well to succeed.

    • @dawsonmobley
      @dawsonmobley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That metal ring gear in the hub and the pinion gear on the motor shaft would both be much harder to replace than the the three planetary gears since they are probably pressed on.
      I have a tsdz2 middrive motor on my mtb that has one plastic gear in it that protects the rest of the drivetrain. That one gear is the easiest to replace and inexpensive. Some people replace it with an expensive brass gear that does last longer but moves the failure and wear point to other much more expensive and difficult to replace steel gears.
      I can't afford a high dollar system like the Bosch that is probably built much better overall so I appreciate that the tsdz2 has that failure point designed into it that protects the rest of the admittedly cheaply made product. I put bafang in the same category as my tongsheng as far as quality goes.

    Bolton eBikes has custom made sprocket removal tool that will easily solve you issue. The easy way to remove the clutch assembly is to rotate the motor 180 and give it a smack to the ground, it should just slide off the shaft. Gears that usually break that way was caused from jumping the bike and not letting off the throttle. If you don't clean out every single piece of broken gear, there's guaranteed to be a clicking noise when put back together.
