  • Arran is a whisky distillery that is still growing up; they've only just hit their mid-twenties. But, wow. For a distillery that is still in infancy, in the grand scheme of whisky, they're giving us product after product of well made, balanced, robust, characterful single malt whiskies.
    This is The Bothy or The Quarter Cask. Nine years of full Bourbon matured raucousness in a bottle. Cask strength, natural colour, non-chill filtered. £50. TAKE ALL OF MY MONEY!

    Lately I have been intrigued by Arran and this sounded like I would enjoy every drop. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    I just tasted it today and it's a style I really like
    Warm, with vanilla and coconut, very rich and intense
    I don't usually drink whiskey but I'm glad I did with this one.

    Big fan of Arran 10 so I’m looking forward to receiving a bottle of the Quarter Cask tomorrow. Where would we be without Amazon Prime?!

    Wow! That's big praise for an Arran NAS bottling! I loved the old 10yo bottling which was also an ex-bourbon cask matured dram (and of course the old 14yo which unfortunately has been discontinued). So I can understand why you're enjoying this new Quarter Cask release. Like you, I also find young Arran spirit does really well with good ex-bourbon casks, helping to bring out those lively citrus notes as well as the honey and vanilla notes. Now that you've lavished it with praise I've ordered a bottle, which here in Germany you can pick up for €33, if you can believe that! Many thanks for the tip, Phil! Cheers.

      €33!! Enjoy that, Russell. Amazing price.
      They are a distillery with alot to love. Really can't wait to try their 25YO, should be out end of this year, start of next.

    I do think Arran is best in all or mostly ex-bourbon wood. That distillate is such a stunner you don't want to hide it behind too much sherry, IMO. (Ever get a chance to try the old 12 Cask Strength?)
    I'm wondering if we'll see this one here. Only just now starting to see the new packaging on the shelves.

      Should start seeing it soon! I did try the old CS. Loved it.

    there have been at least 5 different batches of Bothy over the years. That is the first of the new bottle and label. the new Arran bottles are sexy

      New bottles do look good, certainly set apart on the shelf with that vase like design.

    I still have some of their bottle of 10yo I bought probably 5 years ago in my cabinet and every time I pour a wee dram I ask myself "why is this bottle not gone?" It really is very good and with a drop of water even better. Would love to get my hands on this one.

      The new bottling of 10YO is a personal favourite. So much more not a lot.

    Is that braille on the label? If it is its the first time I can recall seeing that being put on. Its a nice touch for selling to people with sight loss disabilities.

      It is braille! I forgot to mention that, but, yes. They're the only distillery I know of that do that.

    Thanks for your review! I hadn't heard that Arran had a special microclimate that is a bit warmer--they seem to do well with both rich and delicate styles of whisky. I picked up a bottle of the 21 after seeing Chris Goodrum's review and it is indeed stunningly complex and well balanced--quite different from the also tasty sherry bomb 18. Have you tried the 21 by any chance?

      I'm yet to try the 21, currently saving for the 18! See what it does next to Glendronach.

    I don't know what I think about their new label design. But I've always been a fan of Arran, been lucky to go to the Distillery a few times. What's the watch Phil?

      I'm a fan of the new design, its suiting their understated but well put together whiskies. It's on my list! But current situations are sadly permitting.
      It is a very cheap copy of a Submariner, cost me about £35. Good beater watch. NATO straps are then way!

      I've no doubt that one side may have been in touch about that.

    I have the previous version (Batch 4) and find it a little bit disappointing: vanilla, butter and a lot of pepper but very little fruit. For me the standard Arran 10yo (again old version) is more complex and pleasant. Probably there is too much wood for me in the QuarterCask/Bothy. I will have to check whether that is still true with the new versions. Did you compare the two?

    • @WhiskyWednesday
      @WhiskyWednesday  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is my first bottle, no opportunity to try them side by side. This version has much more tropical fruit. The wood is there, that's for sure, but the balance really suited the style and ABV.

    Is this related to that great Scottish sage of surpassing sagacity, Ralfy of Ralfydotcom?

    • @WhiskyWednesday
      @WhiskyWednesday  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly not. A Bothy is a small corner of enjoyment in Scottish chat.

    Ok so there are two of you doing reviews on this channel. Clearly that's intentional but was it just two people who came up with the same name and you decided to collaborate?

    • @WhiskyWednesday

      Ah, so Joe started the channel first and then I took over in 2015? I think...as Joe has work commitments.
