Last minute and out of the blue nomination, Hope you enjoy this feel Good Friday video.. so glad we could get this all sorted for Remembrance Day! Next week Part 6 at Normans.. It's going to be a cracker. Have a great weekend and thank you for watching
Saludos desde Valdivia al sur de Chile 🇨🇱
❤ that restores some faith in Britain, I went hunting for a puppy today I couldn’t believe it couldn’t find one anywhere. Finally, I was told an old lady had knitted some and they were in the hairdressers. Be proud of what you do not just in World War I or World War II hundreds of thousands of died so we can live the life we do. I have full respect for the sacrifice they have made. Thank you for honouring them
This was definitely a feel Good Friday. Nice seeing Sir Theo and Sir Arthur celebrating Rememberance Day/Veteran's Day (US) with the family.
Thank you for the video.
This looked pretty difficult. With uneven ground, lots of corners and inconvenient distances. The result looks impressive.
Best wishes from europe
That doesn’t look like a public war memorial that the council would be responsible for. Looks like it belongs to a private organisation. Great job though
Not only did the Council neglect the monument and grounds, but waited till the very last minute to get someone in to fix it up! Thanks to these two wonderful men who did such a fantastic job, as usual.
Wouldn't have been left until the very last minute either they more than filmed this video 3/4 weeks ago !
@@leefrancis7416 the title of the video is How could the Council let this happen.
Last years service would have needed a clean too hey? That level of neglect must have taken more than a year?
Councils are not actually required to maintain any war memorials and this one seems to be in the grounds of a club
@@Judep4237 Yet in the video it's members of the council that have come to have a look at Ben's work.
Clearly the local council and Royal British Legion don't give a damn about the site of the memorial throughout the year to let it get into that terrible state until there's going to be cameras around to get pictures taken laying a wreath on Rememberance weekend. It makes my blood boil with anger, there's no excuses for them not to maintain that site well. Thank you so much to you and your Dad for restoring some honour and pride to that memorial site!!
Ask yourself who is on the council. DIE? then you won't have any loyalty to england.
The RBL are too busy selling off their land and making profit!
From a Veteran and a retiree, highest respects, highest regards. Thank you so much for your efforts.
Thank you for your service!
This is a memorial to represent the men and women whom died for their country whoever is in charge of keeping these grounds looking respectful should show as much compassion as you and your dad do much thanks from Florida USA ❤
That's because the council is third world migrants.
@@karenharrison885 and somewhere in there, buried deep, is a sentence struggling to get out. What are you trying to say?
Your work shows that you dont need a uniform to be a hero. Great job, Ben and dad.
Very well said 😊
So true. Couldn’t be said any better.
Amen
Too true, nor a cape.
You couldn't say it any better
I'm an army veteran, and I'm really moved that people will go out of they're way to show respect for our fallen heroes.
Disgraceful the council let it get in such a state !! They should rethink their priorities, name and shame the council so people know , when they're next canvassing !!!
Once again thankyou so much for your hard work and respect ❤❤❤
Thank you for your service!
That is completely disrespectful of the so called counsil for letting it go . They should not be on a council . Thank you and your dad .
Members of my family fought in The Great War and WW11 for king and country. Several never returned home. Newfoundland was Britain's first colony and was a country until we joined Canada as a province in 1949. This is a mockery of their sacrifice. Thank you for doing this. Shame on whoever allowed this to happen.
It's a disgrace that any war memorial should be neglected like that. Well done! We should never forget those who served in all conflicts and especially this who gave their lives.
Amen
Agreed. Completely disrespectful. If it was taken care of all along, the green parts would look so much better.
WOW - I am shocked that a War Memorial would be let go like this. Council should be ashamed. I’m from Australia and our local Council is meticulous about looking after our War Memorials. They are always beautifully maintained, as they should be. We should never forget the sacrifices that were made by the fallen. They should be honoured and remembered forever. Thanks for your hard work in restoring this Memorial.
I lived in Australia and you guys do it right over there .👍
Ours is here in Wales as well. It is beautifully maintained all year round. Unfortunately there always will be those who are shameless and uncaring. This is an egregious disgrace. Now I wonder what will it be like before Remembrance Day next year?
The first time you see an Avenue of Honour in Australia it’s truly emotional. Aussies remember those who served but back in England it seems as if there are new priorities.
I'm from the States. As a child, we, guides, cleaned the memorials. In Germany, where I live, they have a special fund that looks after the huge memorials. The guides along with other youth organizations help as well.
Shocked! SHOCKED!!
The Royal British Legion neglected this not the council. If this was council property it wouldn't be locked away on private property.
Well to be fair are you going to expect someone in their 90s or above to shove a lawnmower around on an incline? Though of course they could have hired someone I guess, which then comes in to how much money they have.
@@NewSpirituality local army cadets , or scouts or TA etc could chip in. It is a community memorial.
Good on these guys for getting the job done.
it depends on the actual War Memorial as the custodian could be one of several organisations or a individual. The council even if not the custodian have a duty to ensure that it is maintained at least yearly
@@rnp497 No, they have a power not a duty.
The Legion vacated the site in 2010! It became a private club, and now that seems to be in trouble as well.
What a mess! A memoral should never be let go like this. It should be shown respect and maintained regularly. Thank goodness for you and your dad ❤❤❤
What a difference... thanks to you and your Dad, they can now be remembered with dignity.
Hopefully it is looking respectable for all that will turn up to pay their respects. Thank you RJ have a lovely weekend
A família que tem que cuidar dos túmulos. Para ser lembrados não precisava de uma equipe de limpeza.
Thank you. Lest we forget 🫡
Incredibly disrespectful to let it get in that condition. If they don't care about the monument, how can they say they care about the people it serves to remember? That angers me. But you've restored the honor that was lost, and the dignity that's so deserved. Well done, Ben and Paul! It's beautiful again❤
Assuming your in the uk there are lots of war memorials that have sadly gotten to this stage in church cemeteries where they arnt maintained any more
There's simply no excuse for a memorial to fall into such a state.
You and your father did a lovely job. It has regained its dignity thanks to you.
As a US Veteran, I thank you for doing such a nice job cleaning this memorial up.
It always bothers me how shallow people are with respect to appreciation of veterans and their sacrifices we all made for everyone around the globe.
We don't want much, just please respect our service; and when you do decide to pay homage, please consider the long term care of those memorials.
Nothing serves as a more thankless slap in the face than letting weeds, trash, and muck neglectfully accumulate on your fleeting signs of recognition.
Please remember, all gave some but some gave all; for you...

The Fifth Commandment: Thou shalt not kill - May God have mercy upon your soul
@@anneli1735 just curious, not trying to argue, I promise, I have always struggled with this one growing up and still Christian going to Church. I always wondered if it really meant/said, thou shalt not murder rather then kill, i.e. protection of loved one/bodily harm is being done to someone etc. your thoughts?
Heartbreaking that a War Memorial has to be behind security fencing 😢 A great transformation, that I am sure the whole community will be grateful for 🙏🏻
Looks ugly doesn’t it
The barbed wire puzzled me because, by the looks of it, anyone could just walk in around the right hand side.
@@ronm3245 Probably to protected it from mindless yobs vandalising it. Sign of the times sadly.
It's a common tactic used by local councils. They'll lock the place away from the general public then neglect it and finally sell it off for a peppercorn price to one of their buddies. You can bet they already know who they're going to sell it to.
I hope the government paid you for your time. I can't believe they let a memorial get so neglected. Proud of the work you and your dad are doing.
Why? It's a privately owned, closed, property. Why should the Government pay for a privately owned memorial that the legislation states is the responsibility of the custodian?
Was it private property? I felt like they framed it like it was council grounds but I’m not sure
This wasn’t an overly large project. However, it was labor intensified. And what an amazing difference the two of you made. You should be very proud of the volunteer work that you do for your community. Splendid job!
From a Veteran, thank you so very much Ben and Paul. Your caring helps heal my heart. Thank you.
My deepest respect to you Deborah. Thank you for your service!
Thank you too Deborah. 🌺
Thank you Deborah for your service it is greatly appreciated. My late father was a service man. He would never accept praise for what he did, but I think you should all be showered in praise.
What a beautiful Job thank you from Australia
Thank you for your service from the bottom of my heart 🫡
What on earth are the council thinking total lack of respect to our armed forces 😮 well done to you both .
Tina, most council's have no interest in the history of our country, or the people who preserved it.

Sad that the British Legion couldn't keep this tidy. The war dead will appreciate this wonderful clean up in their memory. Excellent work from two fellas who really cared. 💞
Ben, while you were power washing, I read the words on the granite wall nearby. Thankyou to you and your Dad for actually showing how you both honor and respect what all those people did for your country.

Thank you to Ben and Paul for really showing honor and respect for those who have sacrificed themselves to keep us safe. I salute all of you.
@@preciousbeautyj1043 I paused the video so I could read it all which brought a few tears. Shame on the committee who should be keeping that clean and taken care of. Apparently all of our fallen heroes are forgotten these days.
Yes, me too. Apparently the words “Lest we forget” were forgotten.

After reading your post I went back and read them too. My favorite was (paraphrasing because I can't remember it verbatim) "When you go home, Tell them and say, We gave our tomorrows, For your today." So beautiful.
This place cries out for and deserves several trees and lots and lots of poppy seeds (many varieties to choose from.) peace and love
That would be lovely. I want to re-stain the memorial benches too. They would look so much better and be more protected from the elements. I’m not in England though. 😊
I grow soldier poppies and cornflowers together, remembrance flowers of Great Britain and France I believe. And both are self replacing. And good for the pollinators.
Here in New Zealand they are blooming today for Remembrance Day.
That is what we need now in the UK more actual British People that ACTUALLY CARE about our country
Nice one guys.. These days it's almost considered a crime to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, it's a bloody disgrace if you ask me.. You do great work and give back to those who deserve it. Love your work 👌
This clean up moved me to tears for some reason😢, you guy’s put your heart and soul into this cleaning. It should never have got that bad. My father in-law severed 20 years in Korea and Vietnam wars. He’s 88 now. Thank you from the bottom of my ❤️
Can you thank him for his service please 🙏
@@MaliaP702 Yes I can do that , 🙏🏼
Great work!
I’d say every member of the council who did nothing about making sure that monument was cared for should be voted out of office!
Great work indeed. However, I wouldn't be too quick to blame the local authority. Their funding and finances are squeezed hard these days. Many struggle to deliver even essential services and have to cut out everything else. Whilst a war memorial is important emotionally, nobody will go without food or a roof over their head if it is neglected. The choice is that stark for many councils.
@@laurieharper1526 This memorial surely can be tended to without having to spend money...... either by a landscaper that has a TH-cam channel like Ben and his dad or by asking the community to come together for this. I am sure this can be done.
@@320iSTWEditionI'm sure it can, but it depends on people such as Ben being willing to give up their time. It isn't reasonable to blame councils. Everyone wants comprehensive public services but nobody wants to pay any taxes to fund them these days.
@@laurieharper1526 Everyone/nobody is a basic generalisation and not an argument...... furthermore i don't believe that. I do believe that people do NOT want to pay unjustified taxes. And i KNOW they don't like it, when taxes are wasted for unjustified projects.....
And how any council is run and handles its income needs to be evaluated individually and CANNOT be generalized!
I for one don't know how this council operates and sets its priorities.
Gathering from the topic Ben has chosen i can only guess they had a hand in this neglect. But one would need to ask them why they chose this title. I guess they were talking to the women that can be seen at the end of the video and they probably have a better understanding of how their council works and it almost definitely sparked controversy. Otherwise this title would be different in my opinion.
How OTHER councils work is anyone's guess.....
So i don't generalize in THIS special case, i merely conclude from what is in front of me.
@@320iSTWEditionOh dear, CAPITALS. "Unjustified taxes"? I guess you also want Scandinavian levels of public service provision and American levels of taxation. Try as hard as you like, but you won't square that circle.
Shame on that council!
And bless the vets and you sir!

As a veterans wife, thank you so much Ben and dad for doing this, these memorials should not be neglected and the sacrifice given by so many for the country should never be forgotten.. Much respect and gratitude.
There's a dreadful incongruence to a forgotten memorial. God bless you for doing this!
First of all: great job! Good to see there are still people that care. The council member responsible for this neglect should be ashamed. Second, it’s a disgrace that a war monument has to the places behind a high fence.
I know all councils are struggling with funding, spiralling costs and bureaucracy form filling, but I have to say that’s a disgrace. I’m a little surprised local community groups wouldn’t have been involved though. I’m a council worker and we take great pride in our cenotaph and it’s kept very well with the help of good staff and community involvement. Such a great job you done there, hopefully now it’s finished it’s not forgotten about for another year and a panic job. Thank you for taking the time to do it 👍
@markmagee2382 > Arh they (councils) strapped of cash are arh??? 'form filling'...... is that what they call skimming the pot/hand in the till now? Are you having a laugh or what?
Being the council is a licence to print money on demand they're never short of cash spending here & there most of the time all in the wrong places! Oh let not forget the gold plated pensions/bonuses for the top brass/highly inflated salaries in management/% profit from parking + road fines + all the wasted funds on 'projects' that are doomed to fail before they start ! I'm only starting here.
I know people in all ranks in a few councils it never surprises me at the figures (yearly increasing) that I get to know about & not get told about in the yearly report that we all get. It's a total con job their racking it in hand over fist but the public will not see any of it of as it goes in their own pockets often from work contracts letting their own firms input a inflated bid & win every time .......WISE UP 😆
Thank you so much for giving our fallen a decent memorial.. shame on this council.. it’s a disgrace.. love to you and your family for upholding our sacred traditions ❤
You have a right to be proud. What a fantastic job! You're right, how could the Councill (and the community) have allowed such negligence? You two made it right, and I applaud you for that. I'm from Minnesota, USA.

@@mariabrito1836how do you know the family members don’t care? Plus it’s not their responsibility to take care of those memorials. Not the time to be negative and pointing fingers at family members. Their families served for the entire country. Think abt that.
It’s on the site of an old Legion Social club, it is not the official war memorial.
Well done for doing this, must be a rough area if the war memorial is behind a barbed wire fence. If they respected it, maybe the local community would have looked after it.
Question- Being a military family, Why doesn't King Charles and the courtiers (those with titles) of that area pay once a month to have those areas cleaned and looked after. Give back to the community kind of gift.

I know we think our councils should do more, but we can all play in huge part in looking after monuments like these. Great job😊
But your Council takes money off you, so that they can do the maintenance that they should, in your Council Tax (used to be called “Poll Tax”)

A bit hard when, as an indictment on modern society, they are behind security fencing and locked gates.
