      He will be fired - or to be more exact, Stellantis board will bid farewell to him with that $40 mil golden handshake for doing what they asked of him - sticking that dagger deep into the bowel of Chrysler and consigning Chrysler to the scrap heap of history so the European masters can go back to focusing on Europe and the rest of the world.....as they should. Chrysler is beaten to death already years ago and only the Americans can't see that it's been dying of a thousand cuts. All Tavares has done is put Chrysler out of their misery. That was the whole plot from Tavares' day one, period.

      @@dobbo7690 You’ve missed the plot in the first place. His job WAS to put Chrysler out of its misery. The board is happy with that; that’s why he got the $40 million golden handshake. I’m not here to defend Tavares- i could care less about him. I’m here to set the record straight - seems you Americans don’t know you’re barking up the wrong tree.

      Probably did think he'd survive, but I'm sure he doesn't think he's untouchable. Demanding & getting such a pay raise suggests he was getting danger pay. CEO pay is always uncertain: the job tends to be high-risk & short tenure. Tavares has been spectacularly dumb. But no worse than Mary Barra - who is ALSO making bank. GM will die, but she'll get rich on it before that happens.

      Legacy company CEOs may be trying to extract as much cash as possible, while possible. They may have done the math and determined that it's unlikely their companies will survive.
      I think it's Shell Oil that is borrowing money and using that borrowed money to pay dividends to stockholders in order to support their stock prices. People at the top need to be able to cash out their stock at higher prices before reality sinks in with the general market.

      Not sure how much he makes. But Mary Barra gets $70 million/year and it sure seems like she has no clue what she's doing. The average person off the street could probably make better decisions. If I were in charge (and I'd take the job for a million or two per year, I'm not greedy!) I would not have cancelled the Bolt. Just kept making it, even at a loss. Make up for it with profits from Cadillac or GMC. Keep improving it, year after year, until it's getting 350 miles range, charges in 15 minutes, and is as good as a Tesla! Why not. Instead they cancelled it and are trying for a pie-in-the-sky new product "Ultium". Also shouldn't have cancelled the Volt. Oh and they shouldn't have cancelled the original EV from the 1990s.

    Firing the CEO is just kicking a can down the road. The real problem is Chinese carmakers coming for the throat of every other carmaker in the world. The problem is Americans not accepting the fact that cars are quickly becoming mainly for the rich if Chinese cars and Chinese car parts are banned in the US. Stellantis moved upmarket to try and avoid China and it is not working. Starting next year we will see the first of many traditional carmakers going out of business and it will be shocking.

      @bobwallace9753 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The US government may well build a wall that keeps Chinese EVs out, even those made in Mexico. But that just creates a shooting gallery for Tesla and, probably, Hyundai/Kia. It could mean the US will arrive at 100% EVs a bit later than most of the rest of the planet, but we'll get there.
      The kicker is the Tesla robotaxi. It should be easy for Tesla to manufacture two million robotaxis in the US per year. Each robotaxi should replace five to ten privately owned cars. Even at a rate of five, 2M Tesla robotaxis would put a very major dent in new car sales from GM and Ford.

      Jeep and RAM are highly profitable and are keeping Chrysler afloat (I can't speak to the other divisions). Chrysler should come out with a competent small EV pickup that can tow for 300 miles. Also an EV Jeep would probably do very well (currently there's a hybrid Wrangler, not sure how good it is). They have a PHEV minivan that's very competent, but doesn't seem to be selling all that well, maybe because minivans are a dying category. But there's a lot they could do; not sure why they're seemingly standing still right now.

      Making the move may be impossible for many legacy companies. They need profits to pay their very high debts. They can't make profitable EVs anytime soon. EVs are eating into ICEV sales. As ICEV sales drop, profits drop. There's less money available to fund not-yet-profitable EVs and pay debt obligations.

      To be honest, the USA only represent about 4% of the world's population and under 25% (falling each year) of the world's new car sales market. So whilst the USA is an important market it's not the primary one for a global automaker to seek to prioritise it's company's strategy around. The same goes the other way around, GM had a go at being a global player, tried to apply the US approach to the rest of the world, which didn't work out and so retrenched back to the US market.

      That might protect Ford and GM for a while. But Tesla and Hunda/Kia will be eating into their US sales with EVs that people want to buy. I can't say I blame Tavares if his only crime is ignoring the legacy of the Chrysler stable of cars.
    Think about it: what's there in that stable worth keeping? Nothing. I think the Peugeot people, the core of Stellantis, really were ever only interested in the sales network associated with the Chrysler brand AND any European car brand they'd acquired over the years. Technologically speaking, Chrysler itself (not including the European brands it owns) is nothing more than a pile of rotting carcass. So, yeah, while the American dealers might bitch about Tavares' strategy, Tavares and his masters back in Europe can't really be much bothered by the whole commotion. Tavares has done what his masters have hired him for - kill off what's left of the Chrysler baggage if it can't be revived on its own merits and let's all move on, RIP Chrysler - and thanks, he can go off to the sunset with his $40 mil golden handshake and Stellantis can go back to focusing on Europe and the rest of the world as they have ever only intended.

      To be honest, the USA only represent about 4% of the world's population and under 25% (falling each year) of the world's new car sales market. So whilst the USA is an important market it's not the primary one for a global automaker to seek to prioritise it's company's strategy around.

      @@GruffSillyGoat And let’s face it: the cars that the Europeans make are optimised for performance, ie power nuanced with refined handling. Americans don’t get and are interested only in brawns. As an auto engineer, I’d find catering to the American market terribly uninspiring. And the stats prove the point: there are no worthy American auto brands that I’d consider a global player. (Tesla/Musk was always viewed by the American establishment as nothing more than an adopted American and an outsider whose Americanness is occasionally invoked just to co-opt for fake American bragging rights.)

    That's because of his losing strategy of building vehicles that no one in the north American auto market wants primarily being EV s , our country's grid need major improvement before that will ever happen , charging stations are a joke half of them do not work and in this country we actually tow things I can get 600 miles to a tank on with my 2024 f150 be comfortable and tow up to 14000 pounds when I need it , why would I want some thing that I get maybe 200 miles on a cold day take an hour to charge because I had to wait in line waiting for a charger and have no room for my family and a lot of luggage along with the family dog can't do that in an EV 🤔

      Isn't that F150 fuel capacity more to do with compensating for the *very same* drop in range while towing that electric pickups struggle with - so you can *tow* for 300 miles? I can't be sure, but I don't think many of the F150s I see parked up at the grocery store while their owners buy quarts of milk actually _need_ to travel 600 miles. Or tow hay balers. And using an EV whose 300 mile summer range has dropped to only 200 miles in wintertime still handles the 40 mile average daily commute just fine.

    2. Lithium Alloy LFP battery in developing stage, energy density is expected 300 wh/kg
    3. Anode free LFP battery in developing stage, energy density is expected 400 wh/kg. Higher than MNC batteries and twice than current LFP battery.
    4. Solid-state battery. In 2027~2029, medium/luxury model / in 2030~2032, all BYD mdels. Plus Sodium-ion battery.

    Of course the auto market is shrinking - in Western countries.
    - demographics are in free fall: our populations are shrinking;
    - AI + Robotics assures there'll be less labor content in products AND services;
    - we shipped our manufacturing capacity to China; it isn't clear we'll reverse the outsourcing;
    - EVs use less manufacturing content, parts: they have a smaller manufacturing footprint;
    - China is flooding western markets, dumping EVs below cost;
    - Autonomy ensures fewer people will buy cars going forward.
    The car market WILL expand as more developing nations' populations become sufficiently well-off to afford a car. But that won't completely offset the factors above.

    Dear Electric Viking,
    What happens after Tavares is out? He was extremely greedy, and let's even assume the next person won't be. Everything is still going rather poorly for CDJR (Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram) in USA, and I hear for Stellantis abroad. People don't want to buy their cars. In the USA, Chrysler dropped pretty much all their good stuff because of government order. They're probably not going to get EV's anywhere near Tesla. Chrysler hasn't built the 300 in years. The only Chrysler remaining is an overcomplicated and poorly built Pentastar-powered minivan that's inferior to its competition. Dodge is not worth purchasing now that the HEMI is gone. The only thing left is the rather untested new "hurricane" motor that they're starting to put everywhere including RAM trucks. I don't know, when I think of hurricanes, I think of blowing.
    If you're thinking that Jeep is doing good, they're actually the only part of CDJR that is actually doing good. They're the cash cow, and the only way Jeep is really suffering, is from Chrysler "engineering" being forced onto Jeep. On the Wrangler you have to choose between the dreaded 3.6L Pentastar or the 4 banger turbo with some E-torque module that costs $2,000 to replace and breaks all the time. If it was Taveres' decision to make the Wagoneer at 100k price point to compete with the Escalade, that's an ambitious move. Problem is, there aren't enough Americans with that much to spend.
    As for Dodge, Ram, and Chrysler, they're sitting on lots man. They're not selling. Stellantis will have to sell at huge discounts to move old inventory. They're already way off MSRP. Tavares saw the writing on the wall and used the golden parachute. Where does that leave those brands? In ruin. Chrysler is dead at this point. It doesn't matter who the new CEO is. The CDJR dealers hate CDJR. The customers hate CDJR and CDJR dealers. People see the way CDJRs are known to randomly glitch out at high speeds and all that.
    I hope Chrysler and Dodge die. It's time to make the way for something else. Ram isn't going anywhere because working company people actually use it for work. Jeep's not going anywhere. Dodge and Chrysler have overstayed their welcome though.

    Years back, some of us were talking about how the transition to EVs was likely to play out. First stage, some companies figure out how to make good EVs. Second stage, the cost of EVs fall and companies that hadn't taken EVs seriously would be panicking as they faced bankruptcy. Third stage, only EVs makers survive and many legacy companies would probably have gone extinct.
    I thought the panic phase would happen between 2025 and 2030. It looks like it has arrived sooner. What we didn't factor in, back then, was the emergence of good, very affordable EVs from China. Right now, I can see us losing some ICEV brands before 2030. Some countries may keep their major brands alive with tax dollars out of national pride and political pressure. But by 2030 the ICE is likely to be fatally injured. Close to 100% EV sales before 2030 and very few ICEVs left on roads by 2040.

They have to replace all human drivers for it to work here. I own a Tesla and have tried Waymo in San Francisco. It’s a nice novelty, but no, it’s not going to happen here.
