Most of Yamoaka's music that gets the praise is from the more well-known soundtracks of SH2 and 3, and while they're great in their own right, this game's soundtrack truly is a unique experience. It isn't sad and melancholic ambient ike SH2 or lofi upbeat alt-rock like SH3, it's just pure, grinding industrial and oppressive drone. It feels like one long, unrelenting nightmare, utterly cold and inhuman. To say this was original and ahead of its time in 1999 would be a massive understatement.

It really feels unique and unsettling for a horror game soundtrack. I'm a music guy, and the closest thing I can compare this to is like, weird, experimental music from the 70s. Something like CAN, though even those albums have more traditional, ear-catching melodies and moments, whereas this just feels like I'm in hell. In a...good way, I guess? But that was the intent, for it to be a soundtrack to a HORROR game. This out industrials and out creeps and out-grosses Trent Reznor's Quake OST. Can I say that (for the most part) this soundtrack as it's presented in this video has a weirdly decent "album" flow. Like just as I feel like I'm really gonna lose my fucking mind we get Tears Of...and it's a much needed break.
@Finkster5 It definitely flows well, but I'm sure Yamaoka did that deliberately! The soundtrack for the 3rd game is another great example, it has a perfect flow from start to finish. I listen to that one all the time, and nothing gets skipped!
mrsiggia I've gotta say the first four are all masterpieces to me, in their own way; SH4 is much more psychologically disturbing to me than the rest (and yet somehow the most beautiful), SH3 has the best character lead in Heather (she's so badass!) and villain perhaps in Claudia/God, and SH2 the best story. SH1 is as you said perfectly, a classic that set the rest in motion.
***** I'm not being fanboyish, I'm stating a personal opinion. I havent played HL2 until about 3 months ago, and yes, I personally think it is superior to Silent Hill, though, don't get me wrong, S.H is an excellent franchise.

@@gzaf83 It's the building of layers with each track. Take "Over" leading into "Devil lyric" for example. The build to nothing then slow drag on into devil lyric after cutting all the main sounds and leaving the shrieking on it's own. It's just fantastic sound design, in my experience, no horror game since has used music in such a way that puts such an endless dread into the player. A remastering of this game would need to either use this template and simply improve the sound or just leave the soundtrack well alone and just bring the graphics up to a more modern standard. It's hard to stay afraid nowadays looking at polygons with the graphical leaps and bounds with come since this game first came out.

Silent Hill is a masterpiece in the horror genre I think, and I wasn't raised on Silent Hill nor did I play it when I was younger, I only got into it recently but it's just amazing, I'm not sure what the consensus is for the best Silent Hill game among the fandom but just Silent Hill 1 is amazing so I'm not sure if they topped it or not, it's so mysterious but so intriguing throughout the entire game. Even if most might say they topped it I'd find it hard to believe, everything after getting to the school is true horror.

Too bad they only used that industrial scream music for one very short cut scene. That song should've been playing everytime a monster was chasing after you. Imagine the first 20 minutes you're walking through the fog, its so quiet you can only hear your footsteps. And then. You see him, Pyramid Head, walking towards you. And then a message pops up on the bottom of the screen, "DON'T LET HIM GET YOU." That is MY Silent Hill.

Pyramid Head was from Silent Hill 2, and ONLY Silent Hill 2, as he was specific to James Sunderland's character. The "Pyramid Head" from Homecoming was actually called "Bogeyman" and was supposed to be a completely different character (despite being a blatant ripoff)

It's crazy. I can look up any SH song on yt, and when I look at the comments there are always fresh ones at least a week old, as if loads of people are mourning the team silent era, team silent itself and silent hills maybe.

I've put it for on 'for fun' while driving in the night through forest. Did not manage to listen for more then 10 minutes cause I was getting scared AF and was imaging seeing stuff on the sides of the road. Testament to how great this soundtrack is.

Fun fact... did you know... that some of the soundtrack for this game was made with a dentist's drill but slowed down... i hate the sound of a dentist's drill and i shat myself as a kid when i went to a dentist and heard the drilling in my head...
Wow! I luuuuuuvvv this game! I started playing video games when my 15 year old daughter was playing this and was too scared to get through the school. So she asked me to play it so she could continue. Haha! Her mistake! She never got the controller back. Thus launching me on my passion for PS, PS2, PS3, etc.!

I think Silent Hill 1 is the most terrifying one to me. Maybe because I was being initiated in the series, but it feels so dark and oppressive. I think the soundtrack is the scariest one too, so disturbing! The overall experience is different from the more melancholic SH2. Maybe the low-poly aesthetics leaves some room for the imagination too.

Silent Hill 3 was grotesque and creative, but also aesthetically really pleasing, and that's what i think they were going for. it took me a month to finish this game because of fear,and i was always only playing it during the evening or night.Listening to certain tracks from this album resurfaces the fears of the past which were around 15 years ago.

Despite all the technological advances in the gaming industry. Silent Hill 1 and 2 are undoubtedly the two most disturbing games I have played...Masterpieces is a shame Keiichiro Toyama left the series.

I have no nostalgia for Silent Hill, other than my experience of watching a Walkthrough as a curious teen, but man, what an experience it must have been to play it for the first time! I envy people who got to enjoy the gems of the original Playstation during its prime.
It was amazing :) The intro melody haunted me for all my childhood... it still does, but now I am not as scared as back then😅 Back then, Resident Evil and SIlent Hill were my #1 horror franchises.

Sometimes in games the people making the music will give crazy titles to the music files, for personal identification. So, later on when people dig around in the game files and find them they just call the crazy names the official track titles. So sometimes music tracks in games can be pretty ridiculous. A good example of this is almost any song from any Age of Empires game.

fuck this game or should i say unimaginable amount of fuckable fuck When i was in school i was only able to endure it for 15 or 20 minutes.Then i stayed away days from it,retried only to end with the same result again and again.I was even afraid to leave my room for toilet while i was playing it... Then i managed to withstand it's terror.It was powerful.I hope new Silent Hill would be as scary as this. P.T didn't seem frightening at all
I cri ev'ry tiem! (Sorry) But for real tho, that part of the game was just so heartbreaking! Seeing it for the first time was unsettling and confusing of course, but every time I got to that moment, whether playing SH1 or just watching the cutscene on TH-cam, just fucked me up every time! The ending of the scene kills me! Watching Harry lock Lisa in the room to protect himself, and hearing her sobbing behind the door because she's so frightened and so alone-- *that* definitely made me cry! Especially when you see that it's killing Harry to do this! He's come to care about Lisa throughout the game, just as the player has, but he has to lock her up for his own protection because she's turning into one of the nurse monsters from the game-- if she ends up killing him, then Cheryl will be lost to him.
I once listened to this just before falling asleep, and ended up having the weirdest dreams. I don't remember them very well, but I know they were weird.
While there are quite a few good horror games out there. Silent Hill is definately my favorite. The games, the soundtracks, the atmosphere... I love it all!
+Dewey F. Alone in the Dark did actually, back in the early 90's. Another game that comes to mind is Ecstatica, though that's more of an adventure game than horror iirc

This whole soundtrack is buried in my head! One of the best games ever! i just love the otherworld in Silent Hill 1 and 3, it's bloody, rusty, dark, lying or hanging dead bodies, barbed wire and chains hanging from the ceiling, plus this whole creepy industial, disturbing soundtrack. God this game had a dark and creepy atmosphere. It's one of the best horrorgame ever

I remember myself running through alternative Silent Hill, I was scared shitless and then I had to fight that caterpillar, or the first encounter with the nurses, I was like No No NO NO I wanna go back :)!!!!!... damn, I love this game.

Recuerdo que tome el Crash Bandicoot 1, el Dino Crisis 1, y no sabia cual elegir de entre los demas, y el me dijo Silent Hill, tienes que jugarlo, si o si. me lo lleve, y no lo tome en cuenta, hasta que una noche, Notese, una noche me puse a jugarlo... This music represent how I feel everyday, how i felt in the last year, it expresses my emotions, my state of mind but with no frustrations only resignation. I feel at peace when I listen this and sh 2 soundtrack, i love sh 3 soundtrack aswell they make me feel like i belong to a unexplainable world where I'm at peace with myself
Silent hill is my Alice in wonderland. The journey from the original up to s.h. the room has pushed me through the looking glass and beyond. Except I never awoke from my beautiful nightmare. My soul will always walk the roads of silent hill.
'She' was the very first song i ever heard from Silent Hill, it was on a video promoting the game, and it's quite possibly my favourite, though i love them all. Stellar game indeed, fantastic soundtrack too!
Oh man, this album and a few of the other Silent Hill soundtracks got me into noise, trip hop and ambient. I love Akira Yamaoka for creating such a wonderful entry way to those other pretty difficult styles

+Mexiun Trivio i've been a fan since the first SH came out and it didn't ruin my ight/day/week/year; PT looked like standard, typical survivor horror...i don't see why everyone has their panties in bunch; it was just a demo and the demo didn't impress me any... and this is coming from a guy who loved/loves the first three SH games
18:33 35:13 38:49 The most visceral panic I've ever experienced, I was terrified. I played it around the year 2001 alone, in the dark and at night and in English, I speak Spanish, so it took me three times as long to solve a lot of things. It is my favorite game, I have it above Silent Hill 2 because of the experience that marked me forever, with SH 2 I was already prepared. It was the third game I played after buying my first console, I had only played Crash Bandicoot and twisted metal and arcade games on other machines. I definitely wasn't prepared for it, it couldn't exist, it couldn't be a game and it wasn't, because it was an experience.
38:49 got me good too. It was playing in the sewers leading to amusement park, and the further you went, sounds were becoming more 'aggressive'. I was scared shitless at the last part of this section. I started playing this game recently for the first time, and my mind got blown. I can't even imagine how it was to play it around its release date, wish i had a chance to experience it.
if you enjoy this, I recommend checking out industrial music- bands like throbbing gristle pioneered this style and made some incredible albums. I recommend checking out Hole in the Heart, Second Annual Report, Horse Rotorvator and Virgins (most similar to silent hill) if you're looking for a palace to start.
If you're looking for something similar to noisy-industrial/weird percussion music of SH1 and 2 I suggest you check music of Controlled Bleeding, Z'ev, Nocturnal Emissions, Chu Ishikawa, Militia, Vivenza. Hope that would be of some use to some fans )
At first I thought that the SH2 soundtrack was the best, but after a while I must say this has grown as a favorite of mine. The industrial sounds are much more terrifying than the chill OST of SH2. I'm sad the rest of the games stepped aside from the industrial sound, it adds so much more to dark ambient overall.
The main theme freaked me out when i rented this game from Blockbuster in 1999, at age 12. It gave me the chills when it came out of NOWHERE at the end of P.T. RIP franchise

Silent Hill is a masterpiece in the horror genre I think, and I wasn't raised on Silent Hill nor did I play it when I was younger, I only got into it recently but it's just amazing, I'm not sure what the consensus is for the best Silent Hill game among the fandom but just Silent Hill 1 is amazing so I'm not sure if they topped it or not, it's so mysterious but so intriguing throughout the entire game.
Even if most might say they topped it I'd find it hard to believe, everything after getting to the school is true horror.
Poor Silent Hill... It's kind of at the end of it's road, isn't it?

I've put it for on 'for fun' while driving in the night through forest. Did not manage to listen for more then 10 minutes cause I was getting scared AF and was imaging seeing stuff on the sides of the road. Testament to how great this soundtrack is.

Here we are heading into Autumn 2023, and I've been waiting all year to revisit these soundtracks to fit the seasonal mood -- glad to see you all make it here, too.
I think Silent Hill 1 is the most terrifying one to me. Maybe because I was being initiated in the series, but it feels so dark and oppressive. I think the soundtrack is the scariest one too, so disturbing! The overall experience is different from the more melancholic SH2.
Maybe the low-poly aesthetics leaves some room for the imagination too.
Aesthetically, i think Silent Hill 2 was the one that really lacked, but made up in its story telling. Silent Hill 3 was grotesque and creative, but also aesthetically really pleasing, and that's what i think they were going for.

it took me a month to finish this game because of fear,and i was always only playing it during the evening or night.Listening to certain tracks from this album resurfaces the fears of the past which were around 15 years ago.
Ironwill Yeah, the first time I tried playing, I just couldn't. Only years later I managed to go through it. The fun part is that I didn't think it was horribly scary while playing, but I just couldn't sleep later.

I wish there was more dark ambient like this. Yamaoka's definitely one of a kind.

Despite all the technological advances in the gaming industry. Silent Hill 1 and 2 are undoubtedly the two most disturbing games I have played...Masterpieces is a shame Keiichiro Toyama left the series.

I have no nostalgia for Silent Hill, other than my experience of watching a Walkthrough as a curious teen, but man, what an experience it must have been to play it for the first time! I envy people who got to enjoy the gems of the original Playstation during its prime.

Sometimes in games the people making the music will give crazy titles to the music files, for personal identification. So, later on when people dig around in the game files and find them they just call the crazy names the official track titles.
So sometimes music tracks in games can be pretty ridiculous.
A good example of this is almost any song from any Age of Empires game.

When i was in school i was only able to endure it for 15 or 20 minutes.Then i stayed away days from it,retried only to end with the same result again and again.I was even afraid to leave my room for toilet while i was playing it...

But for real tho, that part of the game was just so heartbreaking! Seeing it for the first time was unsettling and confusing of course, but every time I got to that moment, whether playing SH1 or just watching the cutscene on TH-cam, just fucked me up every time! The ending of the scene kills me! Watching Harry lock Lisa in the room to protect himself, and hearing her sobbing behind the door because she's so frightened and so alone-- *that* definitely made me cry! Especially when you see that it's killing Harry to do this! He's come to care about Lisa throughout the game, just as the player has, but he has to lock her up for his own protection because she's turning into one of the nurse monsters from the game-- if she ends up killing him, then Cheryl will be lost to him.

Games like Alone in the Dark, and Resident Evil just didn't do the horror genre justice like Silent Hill did.
+Dewey F. Alone in the Dark did actually, back in the early 90's. Another game that comes to mind is Ecstatica, though that's more of an adventure game than horror iirc

Whether you want to or not, it's the everyman characters in SH that really help drive it too. You get emotionally sucked in, organically.

The most visceral panic I've ever experienced, I was terrified. I played it around the year 2001 alone, in the dark and at night and in English, I speak Spanish, so it took me three times as long to solve a lot of things.
It is my favorite game, I have it above Silent Hill 2 because of the experience that marked me forever, with SH 2 I was already prepared.
It was the third game I played after buying my first console, I had only played Crash Bandicoot and twisted metal and arcade games on other machines. I definitely wasn't prepared for it, it couldn't exist, it couldn't be a game and it wasn't, because it was an experience.
38:49 got me good too. It was playing in the sewers leading to amusement park, and the further you went, sounds were becoming more 'aggressive'. I was scared shitless at the last part of this section.
I started playing this game recently for the first time, and my mind got blown. I can't even imagine how it was to play it around its release date, wish i had a chance to experience it.
This is, hands down, one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard and love. Great memories from this stuff!

I recommend checking out Hole in the Heart, Second Annual Report, Horse Rotorvator and Virgins (most similar to silent hill) if you're looking for a palace to start.

percussion music of SH1 and 2 I suggest you check music of Controlled
Bleeding, Z'ev, Nocturnal Emissions, Chu Ishikawa, Militia, Vivenza.

At first I thought that the SH2 soundtrack was the best, but after a while I must say this has grown as a favorite of mine. The industrial sounds are much more terrifying than the chill OST of SH2. I'm sad the rest of the games stepped aside from the industrial sound, it adds so much more to dark ambient overall.
When “until death” came on in the game I remember panicking waaaaay more than I should’ve 😂.
That track is so eerie and petrifying. It’s amazing.
The main theme freaked me out when i rented this game from Blockbuster in 1999, at age 12. It gave me the chills when it came out of NOWHERE at the end of P.T.
