    Oh snap this game looks awesome I ve never even heard of this game! Also when you were describing the game you could say that it has gameplay density, you know you want to ;-)

      Hahah it's true! Just like you say with shmups, it definitely has gameplay density. I don't think I actually said it out loud in the video, but I felt like it played a lot like how a 3D shmup would. Or maybe one could even call it that.

    My wife watched me play this game, last night, and I explained the whole deal with the navigators and their respective endings.
    Today, I dropped this line on her: If you were my M.I.S.S., I'd make you my missus.

    Just bought it two weeks ago and your video convinced me! I immediatly recognized the work of the team behind Saphirre on PC Engine. Same character design and the music is similar. The 3D animation is very smooth and fluid, the game is fun to play. Thanks a lot!

    The only thing even remotely approaching a complaint I could have about this game is the slowdown when setting off a bunch of explosions at once in a tight area.
    It honestly doesn't really bother me; I'm quite used to old 3D games, where such slowdown happens quite often, but I understand how others might not feel the same.
    But still, this game is just so much dang fun.

    This game looks like the Saturn equivalent to Love and Destroy for the PS1, right down to the Saturn being better at 2D so it uses sprites for the characters but Love and Destroy is fully 3D except cutscenes

    I love this kind of stuff. I don’t care much for new modern games, give me new old games any day. The PS1 and Saturn host two of the most fascinating and experimental libraries of any console, I love the ambition.
    Hidden gem feels like a term the internet has killed off but this game is a legitimate hidden gem.
    As former exchange student I’d probably get a massive kick out of the basic spoken Japanese.
    I’ve played Indy games with similar combat and camera but they always fall way off the mark. This looks like it plays how this kind of game should play.

    Hey Bofner, great to see a new video from you, it's been too long. Very interesting topic! I only heard about Bulk Slash myself fairly recently, when Sega Lord X mentioned it a few times in his videos. The Saturn is my favourite console (not just because I've always been an incurable Sega Boy, but because I feel it's the console that hits the perfect sweet spot of power to do things and limitations to require coding discipline that enabled genuinely creative and imaginative games) and I like to consider myself a fan of it, but I had no idea this game even existed before then, which surprises me. The UK Official Sega Magazine which was my gaming bible back then was strong on imported content too but even they overlooked it - so, an actual breakdown of what the game involves with this video is very useful and informative. I'd have been all over this game if I had the opportunity to play it at the time, things like animated FMVs drove me wild back then (sometimes I'd boot up Guardian Heroes just to watch the opening movie). Interesting that you criticised Burning Rangers too - I like the game, but I do agree that a good concept was inadequately served and the game was just beyond the poor Saturn's capabilities, it's one of those that genuinely would benefit from a remake with modern technology and the comparison to how Bulk Slash used its 3D better is valid. Score Attack-style mecha games are I think still fairly infrequent so a Bulk Slash 2 that you mull over towards the end could have a genuine commercially viable USP to it as well.

    • @Bofner
      @Bofner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's a shame how overlooked this game is. I found it by literally just looking through a list of titles on the Saturn, and I'd look them up if the title and box art was interesting. I basically just got lucky haha

    The red book audio thing is really just a myth. Far more games use the scsp than redbook audio. Usually it is your arcade ports that utilize redbook because the games themselves are tiny space wise. In a game like bulk slash though, redbook audio would cause it to be a 2 disc game, and that would be 2 discs both containing the same audio tracks.

  • @kapparomeo
    @kapparomeo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Another question occurs to me: while Bulk Slash does indeed weigh the fruit trees low with a bountiful crop of waifus, and the first M.I.S.S. is right by your starting point on level one, it's still the case that she is not preloaded into your mech and you don't actually need to pick her up. Can they be killed by stray bombs? Is it possible to complete the game while not actually collecting a navigator at all? Is there any "forever alone ;_;" secret ending if you do manage to beat the game without any of the girls?

    • @Bofner
      @Bofner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can definitely beat the game without picking up a MISS. Even when you have them unlocked from the beginning, you can choose to go by yourself. You don't get navigation help though. I'm not sure if I've beaten the game like this though, but I know its possible. I'll have to play through and see!

    • @chanhjohnnguyen1867
      @chanhjohnnguyen1867 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a game I'd really like to play, but right now just isn't possible for me. I live in Japan and am atively studying Japanese, so if I'm going to play Sakura Wars, it's going to be in Japanese, but the quik time decision making needed for the game and my slow reading skills means it won't be one I acn play for a long while still

    • @Bofner
      @Bofner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the Saturn CAN do all sorts of fancy hardware tricks like scaling and rotation. It can even do transparencies, but you might have noticed that in Bulk Slash, they went for mesh shading instead. Apparently getting transparencies on the Saturn is rather tricky
