    Almost 20 years to improve the GL1800, and this is what they come up with. Less fuel capacity smaller seat, and much less luggage capacity. You can have it. I'll be back when I'm in the market for a heavy sport touring machine.

    Reminds of the discontinued in US, ctx1300. It makes me wonder if Honda put the cart before the horse with the ctx 1300. Maybe if Honda would've waited to bring out the aforementioned ctx1300 till after this new Wing, the ctx may have had a longer life, in the US. Just a thought.

    Was all ready to trade My ST1300 until I saw this Bike at Honda’s Daytona Bike week display. Epic fail for me on the range and storage. I really think Honda is going to have to offer a Grand Tour at some point. Why they never refreshed the ST is really a shame. BMW offers the R1200RT and the K1600GT(L). Both are similar in options with the obvious difference being the engine. The ST would have made a great entry level tourer with just a few minor upgrades/options. With this new Gold Wing offering my ST became my favorite long distance STeed again.

    • @phildunaway8568

      Agreed, I'm a BMW R1200RT rider, and would have loved to had another option to the BMWer, it's good but I really like the ST1300, and I think if they would have tweeked it, it would have sustained better sales. Live and Learn, I haven't seen the GoldWing but I like the videos I am seeing so far. Looks like they are trying to bridge the Gap between a Gold Wing and a St1300 IMO

      Listen again you missing something.............Comfortable, but fighting to kind of not slide to the front when coming to a stop, really did feel like I was sitting in a chair, by the end of the day my knees were a little bit achy.
      She describe the windscreen as a little bit of airflow but kind of kept you from being too much in a bubble;
      I can feel the air going up on me.......
      *To say one thing that might be a suggestion is the arm handles in the previous model they where nicely located and there was enough room to get my hands around it with this new model it was a lot more difficult, I had to really lean forward in sport position to get my hands under there just to hold on!
      ** I don't think wife would be so happy by the end of the day with sore knees and the whole sport tour over Europe. Just saying! :>)

    The one thing that nobody seems to address, on all the reviews that I've watched and that I find to be a huge comfort issue for me when riding from Austin to Big Bend or to Arkansas is the use of Highway pegs. I can't imagine going on a 8 hour ride without them. I don't see anyway for after market pegs to added to this bike, do you? Also I appreciate you have a second rider as my wife is riding more these days. The Goldwing does not seem to have much arm support as compared to BMW's GTL. Shanda, any comments on that from the passenger comfort? I know they have an additional small armrest that can be added, but still does not seem long enough to provide support.

    The current generation Wings are tanks. The 2018 looks like a motorcycle again. Considering the standard model (no trunk F6B style). The revamped front end has been long overdue. Nice review.

  • @exothermal.sprocket
    @exothermal.sprocket 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    What about front end feel/feedback? That's been the usual difference in conversation between the BMW Telelever front suspension and a conventional telescopic fork design, as it's been said that a wishbone style front end eliminates feel and feeback from the front tire traction. I can see how a magic carpet ride works well for this kind of motorcycle, but there's a reason why other manufacturers haven't done this on "sporty" motorcycles.

    • @covingtonwildman
      @covingtonwildman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lifted_Above I own an 18 Wing, and from experience, the front end is awesome, all the road feedback you want, non of the harsh jarring typically found with telescopic forks. It's very planted, and readjusting your line mid corner is easy, should you need to. It rides, and feels like a silky smooth big sports bike, but with all the amenities.

  • @cazgerald9471

    The wing is supposed go be the premier touring bike. Not a sport tourer. A loss in storage, range and bags that open to the side instead of having a top lid are major drawbacks.

    I got to see and sit on the Wing, Venture and Grand America at IMS Cleveland. I think it is a great bike for ST1300 riders looking to move up, but most Wing owners there seemed underwhelmed. As a current LT rider looking for my next ride, I was not impressed nor was my wife. The only bike that impressed us from looks and sitting on it was the Venture. If only it had a proper engine. I'll stick with my LT for now and hope Yamaha comes to their senses and puts a modern liquid cooled V-4 in the Venture since it now is the only true luxury touring bike left.

    • @gabbyhayes1568
      @gabbyhayes1568 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ LTVoyager. What, no mention of the K1600 GTL as a future possibility?

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gabby Hayes I have twice rented GTLs in Europe. They are like the new Wing in the sense that they moved too far towards sport touring. I ride two-up on every trip and want a luxury touring machine. Also, the BMW dealer network is pathetic so I would prefer a brand other than BMW. Unfortunately, their machines are so much better than their contemporaries, that it is hard to switch. For example, everyone is raving about the Honda front suspension and electric windshield. BMW riders have had both for 20 years. These are old tech at this time.

    • @yayoi1
      @yayoi1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't knock the new Venture till you try it. You might like it...

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will test ride the Venture if a local dealer has one available for test ride. However, I have ridden a few air cooled V-twins and I have not liked any. All have been way too hot compared to my LT and my former ride, a Voyager XII. The likelihood of me liking the Venture is less than 10% as it now stands. Change to a V-4 with water cooling and 1400cc or so, and I would probably be in line to buy one. In a motorcycle, the engine matters ... a lot. And neither air cooling nor V-twins excite me and worst of all is both in the same engine.

    • @kdmcc7
      @kdmcc7 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rode the Venture also the Eluder, about a month ago. Had high hopes, but the are terrible handlers , and feel 200 pounds heavier than the Wing.
      Problems with fueling too.

  • @LTVoyager
    @LTVoyager 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Where do you get only a 10-15% reduction in storage capacity? Published figures I've seen list 150 liters for the prior Wing vs. 110 for the new Wing. That is nearly a 27% loss in capacity. 10% would have been much more tolerable. Losing more than a quarter of the space is not a "small amount" of storage loss.

    • @jennydiazvigneault5548
      @jennydiazvigneault5548 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      40 litres is like losing a whole case. For the worlds premier touring bike thats not good. Its trying too hard to be a sport bike. My days of strapping down backpacks and duffle bags are over.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Americans need to give up 40 liters of crap when they ride around on bikes. That's my opinion.

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      110 L is fine for the solo rider. For the touring couple who travel beyond their home state, it is pretty meager. It is pretty clear you don't travel long distance, two-up.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not a savvy adventurist, but I have traveled across states solo. I took too much garbage with me.
      I do listen to podcasts and watch videos from savvy adventurists who've traveled a lot of their lives, some around the world. What it takes to travel some distance is a lot less than most people automatically think. If you'd like to catch the same podcast programs and expos and other things on the subject, I'd be glad to link them.

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've traveled fairly extensively already, both in the US and Canada and Europe. My wife and I spent last September riding around the perimeter of the US covering 8,500 miles in 29 days. And I can tell you that for that sort of traveling, 110 liters is not a convenient amount of storage. We generally do laundry every 7-8 days with the storage in our LT (130 L or so) and going down to 110 would mean laundry every 4-5 days and probably leaving behind tools such as air compressor, jumper cables, etc., which isn't a good idea when traveling in remote places such as Newfoundland or parts of the western US. Honda messed up offering such meager storage in a bike like the Gold Wing. Save the minimalist storage for sport touring bikes like the ST 1300. Don't try to make the Gold Wing nearly the same as the ST1300.

    • @RidersDomain
      @RidersDomain  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We didn't have any complaints about the seat comfort! The only comment on driver comfort would be the knee angle- for taller riders the pegs may be a little high. But the seat itself is awesome! The modern design is very ergonomic.

    The loss in storage capacity is a major downfall to this version. I think when people pay good money for this bike they’re looking for ultimate storage capacity. Something that another ST bike can’t provide.

      I have had 7 Wings and 5 Beamers. I currently own a 2017 R1200RT, a 2006 GW and 1975 GW. I had the first two up for sale to buy a 2018. However, I stopped at the dealer last night and looked/sat on the 2018. Looks good, feels good, lots of BMW technology on this bike. Lots of knee room on this bike for a guy that is 6'1". I walked away really disappointed with how much trunk and saddle bag space they took away. The trunk doesn't even come close to holding two full face helmets. Neither does the saddle bag. My BMW and '06 Wing can accommodate my helmets easily. If you ride one-up, this isn't a problem. However, riding two-up leaves you carrying your helmets around or them sitting outside in the weather. There are NO options in hanging them under the rear trunk either like on the older wings. This is a deal breaker for me. Why design a TOURING motorcycle and strip it of the very thing you need the most....storage room! I can pack more stuff in the two saddle bags on the 1200RT than I can in all 3 compartments of the new wing. DUMB move Honda, VERY DUMB!!!

    Honda had to change the GW for the younger crowd. The people that normally buy GW are about to end up in a retirement home. Gas tank is smaller but you get more mileage out of it. If you need more cargo space buy a duffle bag. Cool motorcycle.

      OOoookay. But sit on one and take one for a test ride before laying down the official law about it.
      Personally I don't give a rip about this category. I'm leaning toward ADV bikes. They are the SUV of the motorcycle world, can do just about anything you throw at them, and plenty of leg room and comfort to boot, without weighing a ton. If I was going to spend double, I'd have the 1290 Super Adventure S which adds the 160 mph top speed capability and spaceship electronics/control package to the game.

    • @RidersDomain

      The buttons are supposed to be waterproof, you would just need to be careful spraying directly at the buttons with pressurized water.

      You should be fine riding in the rain, it's spraying water directly at the buttons that could potentially give you trouble. Everything on the outside of the bike is designed to be weather proof. That being said I wouldn't recommend riding in a monsoon, waterproof buttons or not.

    • @RidersDomain

      That's a big jump, all depends on how comfortable you think you'd be on a bike that has much more heft to it. It's got a seat height of 29.3 inches, a few less than the 31.7-inches of your MT. How is seat height on the Yamaha for you?

      @RidersDomain  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it stands to be much more comfortable than the MT, but as far as handling like the TMAX, it's going to be a different ball of wax. It's an 800-plus pound motorcycle, double the size of a TMAX, with an 18-inch front and 16-inch rear wheel set-up compared to the dual 15-inchers on the scooter. It's not going to be as nimble or light as a TMAX, in other words, and will be a totally different type of beast when it comes to managing tight spaces in parking lots.

    If I was standing 2 feet from this guy, with a beard trimmer in my hand, I wouldn't be able to control myself.

    Good review, however making less storage seem ok because it’s fun and sporty on a long tourer is IMO disingenuous.

    Also smaller fuel tank is major problem for long range riding.

      Lim Wiching true, but gas mileage is better with lighter bike, so it’s a wash with prior years.

      It goes as far with the smaller tank due to being more fuel efficient. I would have liked if they kept the same size tank and gotten more distance between fuel ups. I find with my current 1500 that I would like to see it get another 100 km per tank. Towns are a bit far apart up here and I have to use premium gas due to water in regular gas.

      Yes gas mileage is better due to lighter bike, but it still small tank with 5.5 gallons (20.2L) for a Flat 6 cyclinder touring bike. early owner report only managed getting 200-220 miles per-tank, what kind off short distance. Honda at lease should keep same fuel tank with old model, even increase fuel tank to 7 gallons.

      i think for cross state or long distanance riding, maybe need carry external fuel storage containers (about 1-2 gallons)

      I agree. My older wing would be lucky to get 180 miles on a tank. Why put a small tank on a bike with an engine as big as a small car. At least keep the same size.

    Honda kicked an own goal with the dumb design of the side bags. Why on a 40k bike are those bags not detachable, just like they are on BMW.

    It is completely unbelievable that Honda made the trunk too small to easily fit a full sized helmet, let alone two large helmets and some additional items! It is completely unacceptable to have to go to the after-market for ANYTHING for a $30,000 motorcycle. I will not buy the a Gold Wing until the storage space issue is fixed.

      Goldwing was broke it was years out of date, so they copied the front suspension of a BMW, when will Honda create a unique engineering development of their own?
