    Hoping you still read these comments. My chain kit has come in bits like yours but we didn't manage to remove the wet belt all that carefully. How did you assemble the chain kit correctly? I see the crank sprocket can only go on one way with the small dowel but what about the fuel pump sprocket? There are no timing marks?? Thanks

    • @Badgertronix
      @Badgertronix  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm pretty sure it only goes together one way round. Sorry it has been a while so can't remember exactly.

      @@Badgertronix ah ok. I couldn't see a timing mark/pin on the fuel pump side when I took it all off. Everything was covered in oil though. It's only that part I haven't figured out. Wish it had come built up but hey ho

    • @Badgertronix
      @Badgertronix  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The fuel pump isn't timed so it doesn't matter how it goes on. Yeah it is annoying how it doesn't come built up

      @@Badgertronix Ah, that's fortunate then. I will make sure the crank part sits on neatly then I should be set. Hey you don't have a video on fitting a clutch to a semi automatic Aygo do you lol. That's my next headache.

    hello my friend, your daring lol, seriously, after you have done the job you will find its not that bad.
    unbolting the pas pump from the engine block and removing the blank bolt from engine block to fit the crank pin will be frustrating no doubt but once the engine mount is out the way you will have a lot more room, any thing i can do to help, let me know, good luck

      thanks for the words of encouragement. Unfortunately this car has electric power steering so has a different shaped bracket that makes it difficult to get access to the blanking bolt. Doubtless I will come knocking once I get really stuck. Cheers!

    HaHa Jonathan! You're like me when you said that you're not a professional mechanic and you just make it up as you go. I like the way that you research your projects thoroughly beforehand and you get the right tools for the job. I'm quite sure that the project will come along quite nicely and all will be good. Will be looking forward to this project as it does sound like an interesting one. And thanks Jonathan for the shout-out on the timing belt job; I really appreciate it!

    • @Badgertronix
      @Badgertronix  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This project has been on the back burner for a little while, the information wasn't that easy to come by. I'm sure it will be a rewarding project once it's all finished but it's going to take some work to get there. Your timing belt series was fantastic and as you can see from this one there are a few similarities ion how Ford have done things. Will be great having you along for the ride. Cheers!

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I did notice the similarities with the timing pin and bar to lock the crank and cams down. Just keep getting the information and once you get to do the project, you'll feel pretty comfortable at that point even before you tear it down. And I'll be there along for the ride too :)

    My father and I did this job today on my 2009 mondeo. We used the fai kit and used all the correct timing tools etc. The job went fairly well although it was a bit of a pain to do the job due to limited room. On the mondeo it is really simple to pop out the driver side headlight so we did that and it gave us a small amount of extra room which was good. Just a few things we came across. It is really awkward to get the 10mm bolt out of the hole where the crank locking pin goes. The bolt dropped when we loosened it out and there is absolutely no way to get it back so we had to go to the scrapyard and luckily got one off an old engine in there. The wet belt tensioner is a pain to get out as the power steering pump completely covers it so that has to be loosened off which is awkward. Anyway we got the job done and the car fired up and we thought all was well until we seen a small pool of oil under the car a couple of mins later. The brand new crank seal is leaking. It was fitted absolutely perfectly with the proper aligning tool and the timing cover is all lined up too. We chanced popping the old seal back in and surprise surprise, no leaks. So we found that the fai crank seal was utterly useless so maybe just something to look out for mate. All in all though it went okay and I am much happier to know I have a chain down there rather than that dreaded wet belt. We also fitted a new auxiliary belt while in there because it was cheap and why not. Good luck with it mate let us know how you get on. Cheers. Oh just one more thing. There is only 130k km on my mondeo and the wet belt looked so bad. The belt has so so many cracks in it it actually scared me a little bit.

    Hi mate. Just bought this kit myself and was wondering how I set up the cogs and chain. I understand the pin on the small cog has to line up with the one on the crankshaft but what about the big cog? Does this have to be orientated in a certain way? Your advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance

    One very critical point is to make sure the oil pickup is clear. Nothing like doing all this and later find out that there are "rubber" crumbles half blocking the oil pickup in the pan. After all, that's one of the major problems with this design; oil starvation.

    The happy water pump made me smile. I like this one better than the sad 😅 Btw -- I got a chain kit from BGA now at an affordable price, since I first bought a real cheap one from China, just to check the difference in quality. But honestly I can't detect any difference concernig the outer look and feel. They both seem to come from the same factory. I suppose the secret lies in material and tolerances. Anyway, I'll trust in the British product a bit more. Hope it will also give me a smile--or even more.

      +darkwaterblue you can probably do it in a weekend. There's a lot of disassembly before you can start the belt swap though. I've been taking my time and been busy elsewhere so it has dragged out a bit.

  • @Mr.M1STER

    Hey mate, me again. How did you get on? I will have to do this conversion to my new mondeo (2009) because it has the dreaded wet belt. The car has 130k kilometers on it so I would say it is probably due. I will more than likely price the parts at Ford unless there is a huge price difference then I will look into spurious.

    A friend of mine is thinking of buying a couple 1.8 Ford Focuses which need the timing belt replacing soon for his buisness. I warned him about this whole wet belt thing and he's asking if I would do them. From what I can see of it I'm considering pulling the engine/gearbox and doing them outside. Doing the clutch and DMF at the same time. I honestly couldn't see how I would get to a lot of the bolts and even if I could I can see it being a miserable experience with lots of epic rants and tool throwing.
    The same guy just got some brand new Focus 1.5TDCI for the managers at his place. They are still going to the Ford dealer for servicing and do lower mileages than the work vehicles. I'm really curious to see how they turn out after 100k. They seem like a bastard spawn of Ford/PSA but seem more torque-y than the 1.6HDI engined focuses I have driven.

    • @Badgertronix
      @Badgertronix  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +zoidberg444 one you get past the initial access issues I don't think the job will turn out too difficult. I love the 1.8 engine though, torquey and economical and probably the most sensible car I have ever owned.

    i dont know if you realise but the chains only have a service life of 60,000 which is the same as the belt on thing to watch out on many of these engines is a lot of people only change the top belt

    • @Badgertronix
      @Badgertronix  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +joel vaughan prior to the introduction of the welt belt there was no change interval for the chain. Presumably this was changed to the same 10 year, 120,000 mile interval as the wet belt because it's too hard to tell if you have the belt or chain. My Ford dealer didn't believe me that there was a lower belt/chain that needed changing.... Cheers!
