  • With the wet belt to timing chain conversion kit supplied by Lymm Engine Components I have finally finished the process of getting it installed.
    Lymm Engine Components are one of my go to suppliers and they specialise in engine parts. Always great personal service from the team as well as worldwide delivery.
    This is a big job and the video should give you an idea if you've got the tools and ability to take it on. This is not designed as a DIY video so use any information included at your own risk.

    Recently we've seen two of these belts let go in customer's cars. Now every one that comes in for whatever work has a recommendation to replace or upgrade. What a stupid idea, literally designed to fail.

      Terrible design that just doesn't last. Has to be a hard sell to customers, it's not going to be a cheap job

      Ford 1.6d from 1986. Better. Timing gears and a little belt.

      is it possible to remove the wet-belt tension pin/bolt earlier in the process to check whether there is already a chain installed? i've heard that the belt only came in from some point in 2008 (ive got a early 2008).

      Absolutely. Pull the tensioner then you'll know what you have

    That's a big job. Some would say beyond the skill set of a DIY'er but your a smart man. You had the space, parts, tools and know edge to get this job done. Hopefully that new kit will be worth the investment and you'll never have to do this job again. I have to admit, I did skip a head a little but if I had this engine I would certainly have paid attention to the details. Leon and Rob are two great guys. I love this community because of people like them and you. Getting that kit was a big help too. Great video Jonathon.

    WOW this video is brilliant. I was going to pay a garage to do the work as it was too much for me to do. Bad news a few days before my clutch went. My aircon had also packed up a few weeks before, so I decided to scrap the car and buy something else. Now I can see why the garage wanted so much money!

    Excellent! Between your "on the job" video and Alan's 'scrap engine' video, I've just done this on my latest car.
    I lost my last 1,8 tdci Focus due to catastrophic engine failure.

    My name is Justin and I have a Ford Focus mk2.5 1.8tdci from 2008 (KKDA / KKDB engine). I watched a lot of your videos and I really appreciate them.
    A few months ago, just before the distribution changed, the wet belt broke and I destroyed the engine, so I bought a "new" (used) one about 93,000 miles from the UK (KKDA engine). This engine ran excellently on the donor car. From this engine I took the actual engine with the injection pump, without turbo and EGR. Of course I changed the whole distribution on this engine, which was on the chain with a new distribution (F.A.I. chain conversion kitt) and one the Contitech belt kitt. Preventively I changed the cylinder head gasket, although the old one was impeccable. I also rebuilt the injectors. When it is cold, especially in the morning, the engine has a slightly irregular run, emits smoke and has a hesitant ride. As soon as the engine reaches 40 degrees Celsius, it spins very nicely and has an ok run.
    Now comes my question: is it possible that the injection has a little advance, that is, to inject a little too much diesel? Is it possible to adjust from the screws that are on the injection pump hub?

    I've got a UK 2008 Transit Connect van booked in for timing belt replacement this week. Ford main dealer says it has a chain but we'll be having the tensioner bolt out to double check. You've created a great video here. Sense quite an affinity because I've owned and maintained several VW Passat 5-cyl and really enjoyed your Audi 90 rebuild.

      @@GlossaME There's a tensioner bolt that you can take out. It will either have a flat end or a slight dome. I can't remember exactly which one is wet belt or chain but a but of Google will let you know. The wet belt came in at October 2007 officially but Ford were fitting stock engines so it's worth checking. My 2008 reg is a chain.

    Nice. I watched Alan's video on this and I've spoke to a forklift mechanic i know who did this on his Transit connect. Watching your experience doing the job has been very helpful.
    That wet belt is awful, like you said. Yours is best case scenario. There are now 3 people i know who want this correcting on their own vehicles. I'm surprised how much access there was to do it with the engine in situ.

      +zoidberg444 there's been a lot of talk online about the problem but before Alan's video no real idea of how to fix it.
      For as much of a pain in the bum this job was to do and film hopefully it proves useful. These are great cars but they're getting older and into the aftermarket or home mechanic where information isn't always that easy to find.

      I'd heard rumblings. At first i almost didn't believe that they had used a belt. Then i heard Ford were pushing "belt in oil technology" on their new ecoboost engines like that small turbo unit in the new Fiesta. Most other Ford diesels which i had seen had died from something else before being bitten by this problem. Although by the looks of your belt there isn't much time left to deal with it.
      Certainly i think there is more hope for these 1.8 units going forward. Ford don't put them in the Focus or Mondeo any more. Mondeo is 1.6 or 2.0 only. The new Focus's have gone from 1.6HDI with the odd 2.0 to mainly this new 1.5 Tiger unit. Apparently they make that in the UK. I know the guy who's in charge of the tooling contract for the factory where they produce them. I've driven newer 65 and 17 plate Focus's with that engine. It seems like it has more torque than the 1.6. God only knows what problems they will start having in a few years though.

      +zoidberg444 I much prefer the 1.8 to the 2.0 with all the emissions junk. I think I would be scared to get a more modern diesel, just too complicated. Modern petrol cars have closed the gap economy wise

    Fantastic job Sir! Changed the water pump and top timing belt on my brothers 2007 mk2 focus tdci. When I pulled out the tensioner bolt and found it was black in colour and its end was domed I breathed a massive sigh of relief as I knew we had a chain and not a wet belt. However, just taking the water pump off requires most of this dismantling procedure. Took us two hours of grunt sweat and swearing to get the lower half of the engine mounting off due to the chassis leg preventing removal of the bolts. (We ain't mechanics either). Honestly for the time it took we might as well have hoisted the engine out! There is still a fair bit to do but access is not so much a problem once you get this far. In my humble opinion, if you need to change the water pump you might as well go the whole hog - if you have a wet belt.

      It's a fair bit of work in such a cramped engine bay. Definitely easier to pull the engine I think.

    Just had one in apparently diagnosed with a bad ECU... Which might well be... but to start with... the belt or chain is snapped!

    Great work mate.
    I also tend to do as much work as possible, myself on my cars and I would probably tackle this job myself with more confidence after watching your video but due to lack a of having a garage/place to work on it I am having to take it to a local garage for them to do the job. Just need to find one with a good rep.
    Thanks again for all your efforts and taking the time to share your experiences as they really do help out other guys like us who enjoy the rewards of doing the work ourselves, saving a few bob and also (by doing it ourselves) having the peice of mind that the job is done and done right ;-)

      I know what you mean. Jobs like this I have to have them worked out in my head before I feel confident enough to tackle them.

      My local Ford dealer didn't believe me these cars had a wet belt that needed changing so finding a good garage can prove tricky.

    Hi, thanks for the video. Iv been looking at as much information I could find on this job, as I'm doing it tomorrow. Alan's stuff is great, as you said, but yours showed me exactly what I'm in for, as I'll be doing it in the driveway with engine in. Just one question, if you don't mind. So after breaking the bolt in the wet belt cover, how tight did you tighten them. I can certainly do without it happening!!

      +darkwaterblue great timing. It's a different experience with the engine in the car! It's time consuming and fiddly but not too difficult if you're organised.

      It's a workout just getting to start the timing belt side of it. Interesting you had the same bolt snapping issue, that sounds exactly how mine went.
      My upper seal was still good thankfully but definitely something to keep an eye on.

      After watching Alan's video which is very good, I saw that the wet belt is actually the drive belt for everything from the inside to the outside. What a complicated system that is! Obviously the Ford engineers got up with the Volkswagen engineers to help them design this system LOL. Have a good one Jonathan!

      +stuzman thanks Terry it was quite an involved process! As you worked out, the cam and crank use the fuel pump as an intermediate pulley so the belt and chain join them together. Definitely a Ford, VW, BMW kinda conglomeration! Looks like very similar locking tools to the ones you need for your Ford timing belt. Cheers!

    Just watched your video ive just brought a ford c max 1.8 tdci 115ps 09 plate is this the same engine as mine then it's got 132000 on clock and no signs of receipts or anything being done to it thanks.

    Another great video, I did this job a few month's back maybe the uk version is slightly different but I managed to get the crank pin in without taking off the alternator and so maybe worth a try before taking it off. and the only thing's I did differently was putting loctite on cam, fuel pump and crankshaft pullys bolts, and I aligned the crank pully using the long pully bolt to guide through the seal.

      +FRUITBAT2006T Trevor is yours a Mondeo or Focus? Either way it will be identical to the UK version. I don't think that there is anyway I could have done that without removing the AC and alternator. Both are right in the way. I did use a bit of Loctite here and there but must have edited out that to try and keep the video shorter. What condition/mileage was your belt in when you took it off? Cheers

      HI, sorry for the delay it was a c max and I removed the bottom hose the fiddly bit was getting the blank plug back in after taking out the tool I taped it to the socket with tape. it had done 100,000 miles and the lower belt was showing signs of cracking oddly the top belt still looked new but I changed it of course.

    Another great video, is there a replacement interval for the oil submerged belt that Ford recommend.
    Ford seem to have gone backwards because the earlier 1.8D had 2 dry belts that was replaced at the same time.

      +Kevin Haynes thank you Kevin. The replacement interval for both the wet belt or the chain is 10 years or 125,000 miles. I wouldn't worry about ever changing the chain but you see what my belt looked like after 9 years and 100,000 miles.

      Despite what Ford said officially via there service intervals, the heavy duty dual chain setup just does not fail. My local independent Ford specialist has been around for more than 15 years and whilst they've done a few rebuilds on 1.8 TDCi's that had the lower wet belt snap, they've NEVER had to replace the lower chain setup.

    The wet belt should be consigned to history, it's the worst of both worlds. The inconvenience of a chain and the longevity of a belt. Personally I wouldn't even bother tinkering with it.

    very few mechanics change the lower belt and ford didn't used to give a change interval for it.
    They can and do fail which causes engine damage that WILL include piston damage because the valves crack the edges of the swirl chamber in the piston crown.

    Hey buddy, watching you and Allan do this job has encouraged me to take on the challenge doing my car 👍. I noticed you said you use loctite on the 2 cassette torx bolts, did you also use it on the 4 Allen key bolts that hold fuel pump adapter to sprocket?. Also what torque would you recommend to torgue them to along with 21mm pump shaft nut. Cheers George tintanaudio specialist.

      @@Badgertronix Thanks for getting back to me mate, Allan has only mentioned "really tight or fully tighten". I'll have to use abit of loctite and use the same strategy / method 😁. I've done the wet belt replacement 6 years ago at 90,000 miles, wish I'd done the chain conversion back then. It's just the 4 Allen key bolts that meanly concerns me, I quess I'll use a little loctite and torque maybe 24nm. If you gather any additional information please let me know, I'll be stripping down on the 12th February after I get a few booked tint jobs out the way 😎.

    glad my march 2007 focus 2006 engine mk2 1.8tdci is CHAIN wet belt approx may 2007 mk2.5 focus on 143.000 recent cam belt change + water pump + aux belt tenstioner . HEARD wet belts can brake 80.000 less scary

    Hello good, I have the same engine, but it is supposed to have a lower chain.
    Can it be detected if it has a chain or belt by difference in noise in the motor? Does it sound different depending on whether you have an oil-bathed chain or belt? Thanks. Because otherwise how could you know without having to drop the entire distribution?

    Torque to yield bolt for the crank pulley means it should have been replaced. Why didn't you use a torque angle gauge to tighten it to spec?

    gee thats a long video. i made this crank locking pin you show at 4.30minutes in my apprentice on a cnc machine from stainless for our 1,6 D fiesta ford from 1986 my dad blew it up within less then 10k from new with no water on autobahn till it stopped on its own. head was cracked and then new head on the camshaft snapped as it was also bent .. That was a steep learning curve i had lol.

    Hi mate nice video. I've ordered the same kit and not sure how to set the 2 sprockets up. I understand the crankshaft one has to be positioned with the pin on the sprocket but I'm not sure if I need to set the fuel injection sprocket up in a certain way. Any advice would be great. Thank you

      Hi mate. I wish they sent the chain pre assembled it would take a lot of headaches out of the process. I just assembled it alongside the belt I removed to make sure it was all in the right place. There's no orientation to worry about as the fuel pump end is held on by a taper and is not timed. Bolting the little hub to the girl pump sprocket is a bit if guess work. I positioned it so that the bolts butted up against the sprocket in the direction of rotation so that timing couldn't alter if they slipped. It all makes sense when you've assembled it

    Hi mate I've just completed this job myself on a mondeo. The cars running but noticed I have an oil leak from around the fuel pump. What's the relevance of the plastic white ring that comes with the new seal as I just thought it was there to keep the shape of the seal and removed it before pressing the seal on? Should I have put the seal on with this in place?

      The white ring is there as a guide to help get the seal on without damaging it. I don't think I kept it in place when I put it on as it was a really tight fit. Just be careful it's not leaking onto the top timing belt.

      +bertje00 it would be better to have the tool otherwise it's going to be hard to align the timing cover properly and it might end up leaking. You might be able to improvise with something else but the tool will make it much easier. Cheers!

      I used a new gasket. It's a one time use metal gasket so you have to. I also added a little sealant

    If the cam timing was out slightly would it cause the engine to have judder? i know it bends the valves if it's out too much.

      It probably wouldn't run too well. Maybe hard starting, low power. If you use the proper tools it's hard to get wrong

      +MostlymoparIH I did most of this whilst Charlie was sleeping, which is handy as he rarely helps with concentration.
      It is a big video but my Artistic Director couldn't figure out a good way to split it out.
      It made a 10Gb movie that took about 3 hours to upload and process. It made the lights flicker in the house and the internet started to creak and groan but got the eventually
