  • You're listening to the official audio for Joni Mitchell - “Intro to Goodbye Pork Pie Hat / Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”. Recorded live at the Bread & Roses festival at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA in September of 1978, it's one of the first times audiences hear the song. Originally composed by Charles Mingus as a tribute to saxophonist Lester Young, Joni added her own lyrics to it as a tribute to the famed bassist and composter. The new song was officially release with their album 'Mingus' nearly a year after this performance was recorded. Find this and many more rare, unreleased gems on the forthcoming ‘Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 4 - The Asylum Years (1976-1980)’ out October 4, 2024 via Rhino. Shodows & Light is my all time favourite live album and the version of this song on it is my preference, but boy her voice on this. ❤️👌

Cool, but why is the intro heard twice? Hope this glitch is not on the cd in the box set.

Herbie Hancock on piano deserves a mention, don't you think?

Herbie solo with Joni, heaven! If there is more of that stuff on this coming archives issue, it'll be Christmas before Chritsmas. In fact, i'd love a full Mingus outtakes, to hear how it all came together. This is the 3rd version of Porkpie (along with the Shadows & Light version) and they're all top notch.

Aw, Mitchell and Mingus! When it was released, critics and fans were shocked. Time has allowed us to catch up with its beauty. Truly a collaboration - two geniuses painting a canvas! The stunning vocals are like a jazz instrument and the lyrics - amazing! I love this album from note one until the wolves howl and this closing song. I love the intro saying it represents the past, present and future - little children dancing in the streets! It took us years to understand what Joni already knew! Thank you for posting this song.

In retrospect, Mingus grew very organically from where she’d been going with Hejira and Don Juan, but it did feel like a shock at the moment and lost her part of her audience. I knew someone who had every word of every song from the first six albums memorized, and she sold her copy of Mingus to a used record store!
The album was emblematic of who Joni Mitchell is as an artist, though, and showed she was not in thrall to an audience or commercial considerations, and followed her vision where it led her. Hence her true greatness.

@@paolobiscotto931 Perfectly said. My sister had a similar experience with Mingus. She wanted another Court and Spark or Blue. Mitchell never repeated an album, and yes, it adds to her greatest. No pun intended, but she is not just “one note”.

Really interesting when you reflect how the brilliant the Mingus album and that Joni didn't continue collaborating with 1950s & 1960s Jazz legends which could have been a real incredible genre. Joni worked with Max Roach. Thinking of the possibilities: Abbey Lincoln; Shirley Horn; Benny Carter; Betty Carter; Gerry Mulligan; Horace Silver, etc

Joni's voice was an astonishing instrument at this point: the "Mingus" melodies were a challenge, and she rose to it. I think she's become an even better interpreter as the decades have passed, but the technical perfection here is undeniable.
