The conversation on D-day veterans had me tearing up, man. My Nana was in France for most of the war. She's a daughter of the Resistance and the few stories I've heard her tell are just unimaginable. Love Jack's books but I have one beef with him. He has really short chapters so it cons me into thinking I can knock out one more 5 page chapter before going to bed, then a fight inevitably breaks out and I have to spend the next 45 minutes reading about the fight and the aftermath. Wrecks my sleep schedule.
But seriously the books are awesome

My grandmother was born and raised in Honolulu, she was 11 when pearl harbor was attacked. My great grandfather worked at the harbor and she told me that after the initial attack he was given a rifle and told to shoot any plane that wasn't American. My great grandmother, grandmother, aunties and uncles brought food everyday for weeks during the rescue attempts and cleanup. She said the most vivid memory was that the rescuers had a hard time pulling people out of the water, in part, because so many sharks showed up. She told me that story, and others, many times before she passed.

Great episode, My grandfather was at Normandy and I knew at a younger age it would be a shame to lose his stories. So a buddy of mine and I built a website in honor of him. I interviewed my grandfather with a tape recorder as he told me stories of his time during WWII. We then put it to WWII video footage of the war. This was then put on youtube back in 2013. It took me 2 months to put everything together , unfortunately my grandfather never got to see the final site, he died one month after my last recorded interview. Time is of the essence with this great generation that we still have some limited access to, don't waste it. Miss ya grandpa "Lucky Sorrentino" , you will never be forgotten.

When I got home after the Navy I interviewed my surviving grandpa about his experiences in the Navy during the war. He was a radioman/gunner on a PBY Catalina flying antisubmarine patrols out of Rio de Janeiro. We recorded it and sent it to the WW2 Museum in New Orleans. My other grandpa unfortunately passed when I was a teenager but was also a Navy radioman in the Pacific.

My step-father was a merchant mariner during WW2. He could join a year earlier than the Navy so he started riding oil tankers from Houston to England. He told of watching tankers in his convoy get torpedoed and burn. The fire would silhouette the other ships and make it easier for the Germans. I cannot imagine the terror of working on a floating bomb, down in a hot steamy engine room knowing if torpedoed you had zero chance of getting out escaping the burning oil and high octane aircraft fuel and hoping to get picked up by a destroyer since the other ships could not stop to pick you up... if you were still alive. The merchant marines had a higher casualty rate than the D Day soldiers. I heard the few stories he would/could tell and now wish I had recorded them. (Along with his growing up during the Great Depression. )
Of course his service was not recognized until many decades later so during Korea they drafted him. Thankfully, sorta, they sent him to Germany. He had issues having watched his friends get killed by German subs for many decades later.
Today he is buried in a National cemetery. Both his MM service and his Army service are on his tombstone. Miss ya, Lee.

My grandfather was a medium tank crewman in WW2. He was a career soldier, staying in like 24ish years. Like 3 or 4 of his kids were born in Germany. He did WW2, Korea, got out just before Vietnam, but got recalled and ended up going. When he passed in '93 from cancer due to Agent Orange, we got the whole run around about a fire and then a flood conveniently destroying all his paperwork. Someone did manage to dig up one piece of paperwork, but I'm not sure how. His demobalization papers after WW2. He was in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardeness, Central Europe, battles and campaigns. I don't know what his unit was, it says Army Ground Forces Board No. 2 Detachment but that doesn't sound like a unit. Anyway, because this is the only piece of paper we could find, he only got recognition for his time in WW2. I think I remember hearing he did an MOS change in the 24 years, but without paperwork, there's no telling. Wish I knew more but he refused to ever speak of the military after his time of service.

@@jeffbrowning4684 Nope. He wrote "Rogue Warrior" while he was doing time for some BS charges about "Mishandling Navy resources". Thing is, the hate Navy brass had for him was widespread. He was neither friendly nor easygoing. Bullied Navy commanders to get his way while he was shaping ST6 up. At the time, the Army, Navy and US Air Force's brass were comprised of former Vietnam era commanders who hated that their resources were syphoned away by a " bunch of ragtag misfits that didn't answer to their command". The main example of this was none other than the late Norman Schwarzkopf(He didn't mind having a Delta escort while in Desert Storm, though) The fact that Marcinko went to the extreme when he commanded "Red Cell" and his outfit showed the defficiences of Naval Base security and leadership certainly didn't help. The very second he stopped being under the umbrella of "answering only to National Command Authority" the brass went after his skin. Got him on BS charges which would cost him six months in the Brig tops and stepped them to eighteen with loss of rank and pay. Yet they couldn't dishonorably discharge him and kept his pension."Rogue Warrior" was published after he got out from the Navy. All told, he served for 25 years.
