    I toured with a SuperSonic 22 for 5 years, using the clean channel only. One of the best amps I’ve owned. That sweet spot on the clean channel, pushing it with pedals or cleaning it with volume is just addictive.

      Son played a vintage 22 at Carter's in Nashville and it became the favorite amp I've ever heard and I'm in my 60s

    I have a Supersonic 60. In my opinion the only harsh sound from it was the vibrolux side of the clean channel which was too bright even with the treble at zero. I discovered that snipping out the treble cap that's wired by the the treble pot fixed the problem and became a great sounding channel. All things considered I consider it a great live gigging amp if one doesn't want to use pedals because every base is covered with the level adjustable effects loop which can be used in a couple of ways by jumping a cable from send to return. I always like your demos, good playing and get a good sense for how the controls effect things

    I’ve had a SS22 since 2016 and I agree with everything you’ve said here, ESPECIALLY with the Gain 2 knob. I used to not really understand that concept and always had to keep my gains all over the place depending on where and what I was playing. My Gain 1 is usually around 8 o clock or around “2” or rarely higher than “4” and I can adjust my Gain 2 accordingly. I absolutely love mine - it does the fender clean thing at low volumes, and agree on the “saggy” aspect. I completely fell in love when I did the simplest thing that I had never really done before - use the volume and tone knobs on my guitar 😆

    I've got the SS22 head and 2x12 cab, and ABSOLUTELY love it! The burn channel has so much variety to it, and the clean is just beautiful!! Also makes a great pedal platform. Love the reverb too. Go the head and cab people, it blows the combo away!!
    FYI - try some drop D with the burn channel on 'plays itself' !!
    My usual setting though is Gain 1 = 4, Gain 2 = 9, with my eq set for a little more treble, a little less bass, and all the mids. I find this a great driving sound for playing a les paul or 335 through.
    Peace

    I own a 22 and have played a 60, both are great amps. You just got to know your way around them. These amps, like my early 2000s Fender (Custom Shop designed Pro Series) "Custom" Virbrolux Reverb 2x10 Jensen combo are not made to be pretty, little, hiss free amps for the bedroom or recording. Instead, they are made to go out and rule on the gig with cut through that is quite dynamic and lovely at the 22, 40 and 60 watts level for your various gigs , genres, and sizes of venues. The CVR is a rowdy little beast capable of tremendous clarity and cut through, and works well as a pedal platform, while the Super-Sonic series has more of the modern bells and whistles with channel switching and the dual gains. You can have channel switching on the CVR using an A/B pedal and two chain of effects if you want it. I think the CVR is more like a Carr. Set the amp volume high, keep your guitar volume down for clean, turn it up for solos, or step on some pre-adjusted pedals. The 40 watts will really cover some sizable gigs with great cut through. The Jensen P10R AlNiCo speakers give you a beautiful clarity and presence. I play MOR pop rock, mostly 60s and 70s. Corny sweet 60s pop, classic rock, southern rock, new and old country and the like. But don't be fooled, these amps can roar.

    I bought my SS22 combo in 2016. I find it very versatile for all the cover tunes our band plays. I use a distortion pedal on the Burn channel to get a bit more bite. The Vintage channel sounds great, love this amp. I play with a Fender sss Strat.

    I’ve had a 60w SuperSonic head for well over 10 years, and still can’t find anything to beat it… ‘Normal/Fat’ was labelled ‘Vibroking/Bassman’ - ie, ultra clean or bluesy… The Bassman setting is great when it’s cranked, but I must admit, I use the burn channel more. Strat on the front pickup and hit the strings hard, and you’re in the zone. The burn channel cleans up really well, and when it’s combined with a Boss OD-3 overdrive, it’s amazing. Especially with the matching Fender 2x12 cabinet.

  • @HooksBill

    I was skeptical of this amp because of all the talk about it being loud, hissing and verb tank rattle. This is a raw amp. I think if I only play through my boutique amp for a while I get used to this almost perfection. But when I play through this supersonic 22 head and my Friedman 212 cab w/ V30's it really sounds quite musical and fun to play through. It's almost a love hate relationship with a lot more love than hate. I'd recommend this amp for the fact that it's actually quite good and may surprise you. It's probably not what you would expect.

    • @JHKNVY02
      @JHKNVY02 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can clean up the noise, but to 100% kill it or nearly so, you'll lose the effect loop. That's the culprit. The tank can be replaced (Fender has a new version) and that will fix that issue. If you don't use the effects loop those two changes will give you everything you're looking for.

    I really like this amps predecessor the fender pro sonic . Killer amp . The burn channel on the super sonic is based on that amp but it's sort of detuned and not as high gain . JACK if you get the chance to play a pro sonic do it you'll love it .

    I have the supersonic 22 and also a deluxe. The cleans are remarkably similar if you AB them. To be honest I rarely use the drive channel though UNLESS I i have an outboard drive. The drive channel seems to handle it better. Your settings for the Texas Blues though sounds nice

  • @twirlyboggs
    @twirlyboggs ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I bought one when they first came out and still have it but yeah went through a lot of pains with it with noise and Reverb problems (cutting in and out) and I finally brought it to someone that had the fender tech bulletin and fixed the Reverb finally!( so sorry when I picked up the amp I asked what they did and the tech that actually worked on it was out that day) and then as far as the noise floor goes,
    I put a 12 ay7 in V4 position.
    DONE!

  • @damonlorraine4213
    @damonlorraine4213 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have had this amp for many years. I mainly use the clean channel with pedals in the front to get to the almost undetectable tube break up. I can't seem to get a full sound out of the gain channel side of the amp. It is probably operator error, but while I like that side it seems to be to much midrange and not enough full house sound as compared to the clean side with a nice preamp pedal, which comes out as fuller. I'll keep experimenting, but I think this is a great amp nonetheless. Most of us are putting a guitar microphone on the front of the amp these days and running everything through the PA and monitors anyway. You other giggers might have different experience than I, but the days of the wall of speakers driven by massive wattage amps seems to be over. Small gigs less so, but for huge performances the PA throws the sound--at least beyond the stage. Am I wrong? Feel free to pile on.

    I really enjoy your review's (a lot of details and great tips). I have this amp for about 8 years and I love it. the only problem in my opinion is the reverb (it seems to be a little bit noisy comparing with my fender twin reverb). One thing that works pretty well for me is using the EP booster in the clean chanel instead of the fat mode. best regards from Brazil

    Tried this, couldnt get the cleans good enough or the distortion good enough. And the loud pop between switching channels makes it unuseable live. So, back it went! Pay a few extra for a deluxe reverb and let some decent pedals do your overdrive.

  • @charlesfick729
    @charlesfick729 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have both and use both on live gigs big and small. I like the effects loop on the pedal, I use my echo in the loop. It never gets dirty and banged up on the floor. The sixty head I use with either a big box (1960A) loaded with original warehouse guitar speakers even before they were a bonified company, the small 4x12 is loaded with vintage 30’s, great sound with my Tokai Les Paul. The 22 kinked out. I was using it at a recording session ata low volume when suddenly it jumped to full volume and sounded like I had a cord plugged in and was touching the end of the cord, volume and tone controls were unresponsive. Gotta get it fixed….I miss it…

    I've had this amp for a few months, bought it used. It is awesome but it is SO LOUD, definitely for home, and for small venues/bars I've played, I'm having a hard time finding a practical use for it even though I think it sounds awesome. I find myself going back to my Princeton Reverb which I can use more to it's full potential, albeit sometimes with a pedal, where the SuperSonic, I agree, doesn't need anything additional unless you do want to play something like slipknot

      I had my Amp Tech modify my amp and I really like it. I don't use an attenuator and I can play it in the office and not bother other folks. I also push mine with a pedal (clean boost) and can drive the amp at very low volumes, shockingly so.

    • @JackFossett

      Thank you! Thats hard to say - in general, I'm more apt to take a clean amp and use a pedal board. However, for channel switching amps, I have a few Mesas and a Marshall JVM combo. The Supersonic holds its own against them certainly, its just not something I need to invest in. A long time ago I owned a surf green 22 which I foolishly got rid of - if I come across one of those limited ones sometime, I may just pick it up.
