    Just wanted to clarify. Kangaroos are NOT a feral pest, they are a native animal to Australia. They form an integral part of the ecosystem in Australia. I studied environmental science and work in conservation and land management in Australia. It is true that eating kangaroo in Australia is a more sustainable form of meat than beef.
    Actual feral animals introduced to Australia that are non native and overgraze landscapes include rabbits, goats, deer, pigs and a few others.
    I absolutely love your videos Mark and watch them religiously.
    Since I live in Australia, I did think that the choices of food places for this episode were a bit average.
    To end on a positive note, I’m happy you are in oz and creating content here!

      Thank you, I came here to say this. Kangaroos are not feral pests that destroy the natural environment as stated by your guide. Farmers don’t like them but let’s be honest farmers are not friends to the local wildlife.

    • @ajsaces5211
      @ajsaces5211 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes they are feral pests. Maybe you guys do need to speak to people on the land to get the real view of kangaroos. Sipping on a latte in Fitzroy probably obscure your judgement.

      ajsaces, I am a country person , lived on the land all my life. Been a professional kangaroo shooter, and I can tell you now Kangaroos can be pests in some areas however, they are native animals and not ferals as pigs, goats etc.

      I was SHOCKED when she said that. They are only a "PEST" to farmers farming EUROPEAN crops - which are a huge food source that naturally the NATIVE Australian Kangaroos will try to eat. TBH this entire episode really irked me because she basically presented the "Educated Melbourne Hipster Elite Affluent" version of "Australian Cuisine". Even the bloody Dim Sims looked "Bougie"...

    10 years ago when I lived in Melbourne this was my market of choice. Less crowded than the QV market, and with some amazing stalls. I remember the butcher with great dry aged beef, the chinese butcher with amazing home made broth, and the veggie stall with a guy specializing in so many potato varieties. It looks like they renovated the front. Australia is still lacking in native food restaurants, they don't use traditional ingredients, like bush fruits and herbs very much, and you won't find kangaroo or wallaby very often on the menu, you have to cook it yourself. But I didn't mind, I tried recipes, and yeah the seafood is stunning. They haven't depleted their oceans (yet) so it's affordable and there's stuff you'll never see in Europe. I remember pink ling as my fish of choice, I once made it grilled with a habanero and roasted pineapple salsa, stunning. Near my place on Rathdowne Street, there was also a little shop making their own mozzarella and burrata.
    And when it comes to restaurants, Melbourne has amazing stuff to offer, just not australian food. There's a great sichuanese place, a birmese restaurant, nice ramen, even a cool hungarian place. It is an amazing city. Quite safe (at least before the drug issues in St Kilda), very pedestrian friendly, with so many places to see on the week end.

    As an Aussie who grew up in Thailand (หัวใจไทยหน้าฝรั่ง), I have to say that a huge amount of the things you taste in this video (although they seem DELICIOUS) are "Melbourne Hipster" / "High Art" cuisine. Most Australians, sadly, do NOT eat Kangaroo and Emu that often (even though it's readily available), it's most CERTAINLY not available at most pubs (the Chicken Parmy with Kangaroo looks amazing, but 75% of pubs in Australia just serve a classic Chicken Parmy), and even the "Dim Sim" you tried is basically "Gourmet" / for tourists. I do hope you get the chance to ACTUALLY try what REGULAR Australian people try on the reg - including something like Phad Thai or Gaeng Keow Wan! :D
    Also - when that girl says that Kangaroos are a "Feral Pest" my blood nearly boiled off the stove. They are NATIVE ANIMALS. The only reason they are "PESTS" is because they invade farms growing EUROPEAN crops, because naturally those are an incredible source of food. To call them "PESTS" is to equate them with introduced species, which is not only deeply offensive and insulting, it's just plain wrong. To call them "Feral" also - is completely uneducated, since these species are native to the Australian continent.
    I appreciate her hospitality and kindness, but rest assured, the experience she provided to you of "Authentic Australian Cuisine" was highly skewed to a highly educated, affluent, and WHITE demographic very specific to MELBOURNE only. I appreciate that it was delicious and enlightening, but you need to know that this woman's outlook represents less than 10% of the entire population.
    Crikey - you could interview and follow the average Asian or Indian Australian and get a far more authentic experience than this inner city elite haute cuisine tour of "Australian Cuisine". Did you notice that the sign above the South Melbourne Market also said "Selamat Datang" in Malay/Bahasa for tourists? There's a reason for that.
    Even the "Dim Sims" you ate were WAAAAY more "bougie" than what the average Australians' experience of a "Dim Sim" is.
    EDIT : I"ve also NEVER SEEN a "Bogan Burger", and the way it is basically a hipster burn and insult to the working class is not lost on me.
    EDIT 2 : I also GUARANTEE you that less than ONE PERCENT of Australians have tried a "Wallaby Tartare with Egg Yolk".
    อาหารนี้ "ไฮโซ"

    • @ddonlee
      @ddonlee ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You have a point there. I'm not from Australia but I have been there several times. I don't go to expensive ' hipster' places. I normally enjoy watching Mark trying food that the average person would eat. Though all the food looked delicious.

    • @bogantellectual
      @bogantellectual ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I grew up working class in Melbourne and I'd disagree on one point. The South Melbourne Market dim sims, meat pie, and jam donuts are extremely commonplace. Remember that South Melbourne (and their markets) only became gentrified very recently, but those three dishes haven't changed one bit in decades. My boomer parents would say the same.
      Sofia's enthusiasm & general knowledge was very good, but I did wish they included least one POC tour guide or talk a little more in depth to a POC chef. Especially at the Aboriginal restaurant. Though on another comment Mark did mention going to Sydney so hopefully he meets some more diverse locals there. And hoping he actually goes to the outback as well to see traditional food in traditional contexts, and to hear some stories.

      @dingo7055 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@smalltownhomesteadAC Actually the British "Invaded" the country, but you go ahead and call me racist some more. The British built a nice outpost, immigrants (not just Asians, but Europeans and people from many other parts of the world) made it an amazing, diverse and culturally rich place that is the envy of the world. I am, you are, we are ALL Australians. (Not just the British).

      @@bogantellectual I appreciate your input, and I do get that this is probably a local Melbourne thing, so that's cool. Just even when they said a Dim Sim, I saw what was offered and was like "WHY AREN'T MY DIM SIMS THAT GOOD?".. Clearly it's an outlier, but I think most will find that Australian's experience with Dim Sims are something WAY crappier than that, but in many ways equally delicious in a naughty way. I can agree the Meat pies looked legit as well as the jam donuts.
      Thanks for your comment, it really reflects some of what I was thinking too.
