wow I'm so glad I found this and realize that this lovely man is nothing like what I perceived from that cheesy man with the golden glass on the box! Thank you Ralfy! This master of distilling II bottle is so different from everything I've had so far, and I'm really enjoying it. Though I missed the distillery(twice), Arran was the first island I went and it will always have a special place in me.

I have really enjoyed an Arran 12 year which I bought from Whisky Exchange in London recently and now looking forward to the older stuff in the future...

    Hi Ralfy,
I appreciate James’s explanation about distilling a new-make and then creating whisky out of it. I don’t understand, though, why - if the process is standardized - e.g. probably most of the distillers collect hearts between 63.5 °C and 75 °C - we get so many different whiskies? Not two of them are the same, whereas: similar casks are used, similar malt, the same source of peat, even locations of distilleries are similar. Why do the tastes differ so much? And what is the secret to create an excellent whisky? Because if it was only careful distillation and well-prepared casks, then creating good whisky would be fairly easy.

Is the whisky from Arran any good, and what are the best expressions to look out for?

Does that make Arran a similar distillery to Tobermory and Jura in so far as the spirit is nowhere near it's best at ten years?

Hey Ralfy, I know you get a lot of mails like this, but could you make a review about the new Arran 14? That one should be quite interesting!
Or if you don't want to review it, have you tried it yet?
