I am watching this video and beside me glowing pink salt lamp I bought in Wieliczka Salt Mines some 14 years ago. I have travelled the world, but this Salt Mine I remember still as one of the most stunning & incredible places in the world. This place is much more than expected.
A similar salt mine for Wieliczka, and located near, but 40 years older, is the salt mine in Bochnia, founded in 1248. Till the end of the eighteenth century both mines constituted one enterprise. The exploitation of its salt deposits in Bochnia was completely stopped only in 1996. You can also tour it. The specificity of this mine is the underground sanatorium for people with respiratory and pulmonary allergic diseases. Patients spend nights at Ważyn Chamber, located at a depth of about 250 meters and having a specific microclimate. An underground sports field with an area of almost 300 m2 and a mini playground are attractions for those who prefer active leisure.
Legend says that a Hungarian princess promised to the Polish king threw a ring into a salt mine in Hungary. On the way to Krakow she made a stop in Wieliczka. The service awakened her, scared by a rumble from below the ground. She immediately ordered them to dig in this place and there they extracted large lumps of salt. after shattering in the middle of the salt block they found a ring thrown into a mine in Hungary

I went there back in 2018 or so. It was awesome to say the least!!! The only thing I didn't like was the elevator ride to the top. We were packed so tight I couldn't raise my arm to scratch my nose. The Polish people were so friendly and willing to help. Will try it again.
Hey Dave! I remember the elevator ride up as well haha! Must be part of the experience ;) Hope you can visit again! An absolutely awesome place, as you say.
Moria. You fear to go into those mines. The Dwarves dug too greedily and too deep. You know what they awoke in the darkness of Khazad-dûm... shadow and flame...
I got here by accident and I don't regret it. I am 36 years old, I am from Poland and I have not been to Wieliczka yet. Even more so, coming back from the mountains, I could visit this place more than once. You inspired me with this unique place. I greet you and your country.
Being there for the first time as a kid on a school trip, probably somewhere in the late 1970s, walking at the end of the group I got lost on my way to the elevator, of course... There was some panic, more among my teachers and guides than me, but it all ended well after 45 minutes or so. At that time, everything wasn't marked and lit so well down there, and from time to time you could turn and enter into a wrong corridor. As far as I remember, the mine was still in commercial use back then, and salt was produced there until late 1990's. Anyway - I was back to Wieliczka few times in my life, and I always advice my friends who plan to visit Poland to go there. BTW - great job, thank you!
I was there 3 years ago. I got crazy dizy and out of breath from descending those steps. Those steps go on forever. You are not expecting the steps to wind down as long as they do. It seem like 10 flights and turns into 100. Amazin place tho. loved the chapel n sculpture of PJP. We met a couple from Chicago there. Of course, they were visiting the homeland. We're from PA. Polish descent tho. Poland is ballin. Love the country. People are friendly. I can't wait to return. I really want to explore Krakow more. ANd, go up country to the baltic region.
Your videos are bringing me so much joy during a challenging time. I can "travel" vicariously through your past experiences for now!! And Poland is definitely on my "going there next" list, as I have many Polish relatives.
Oh wow, I've not two weeks ago! It was super interesting and the guide had this rather deadpan kind of humor which kept things from getting too stale. He kept telling about how we can safely lick the walls to test if it was really salt, while also reminding us that the salt mines are visited by thousands of visitors, who probably may have done the exact same thing as we were going to (licking the salt). I licked it a bit. It was indeed salt. 10/10 Would go again.
A Polish company which operated continuously for 500 years. One of those rare examples of Poland's wealth and culture which was not vandalized, burned, bombed or stolen by the neighbours... and forgotten.
Oh my, this brings back memories. I went there almost 14 years ago with my classmates. I'm a native resident of Poland and we used to go there on our field trips. (I'm not sure if schools are still doing this). I've spent the night there. It was really great.
I've used the underground locations of the Wieliczka Salt Mine as inspirations for some fantasy fiction I'm writing. It never hurts to take inspiration from the real world.

Hello and thanks so much for your lovely comment! I felt like a child visiting the mine because of the overwhelming feeling of wonder so I can only imagine what it would be like to visit as a child and how incredible it would be. Perhaps you'll have a chance to return to the mine again! As I'm sure you can tell in all our videos, we absolutely love Poland and this was a real highlight on our travels around the country as well. :)

Wanna know another uses of old salt mines in Poland? :) Inowroclaw city, salt mines below whole city, flooded with water several decades ago. Now they sell this water as mineral water in bottles, it has as many minerals as a dietary supplement :)
Great video, as usually. Poland has quite a few underground attractions. Another one I strongly recommend is the Bear Cave in Kletno, in Lower Silesia.
Truly incredible and thanks for taking me along. I wouldn't get there otherwise. Too many stairs, but happy to know there was an elevator up for all .. leaving no one behind! A pretty breathtaking experience indeed!! 🙌❤
Yes, I was delighted to see that most of the mine that we saw (maybe all of it actually) was accessible. Fantastic. We were also happy to find out there was an elevator to the surface so we didn't need to face those 380 steps again haha ;)
OMG. I remember I was in Wieliczka in primary school so... more or less than 20 years ago and it’s so amazing that it’s still there yet it’s just 20 years. Mind blowing, when you realize that’s just not even whole 3% (if I’m counting this correctly) of its age... Yet, it’s almost whole my life... I think that I should visit this place again... I’m so happy you went to Wieliczka It is an experience it is mind blowing, the St.Kinga Chapel is breathtaking it is beautiful you have to touch to believe that everything is made from salt . It’s worth the short train trip from Kraków .😘Love All your videos
Some people compare Wieliczka mines to mines of Moria 😄 The tour only shows a small fraction of the mine, with salt chapels, salt statues, salt halls, old mining equipments and constructions, underground super salty lakes and more, and with restaurants, cinema and shops at the end. There is also an underground museum, including a museum of art (it's an additional tour you can take without extra charge), and completely separate geological and speleological tour into a more wild parts of the mine (its more expensive and much longer). There is even an underground sanatorium for people with asthma. And all of that is still a smal fraction of the whole mine, some of the rest isn't save enough, or have to much water, to little oxygen or is simply being preserved. And there are more mines like this in Poland (salt mines, silver mines, coal mines etc.), opened as a tourist and educational attractions, but Wieliczka is the largest one (at least the part available for tourists).
Not to mention that the tourist route only goes through a fraction of the entire mine. There's more. The miner's route leads through parts of the mine where typical visitor wouldn't go. If you choose it, you'll get all the miner's equipment, like hard hat, lamp, gas detector, delve into darkness wearing miner's clothes and do miner's tasks on the route. Very exciting. Check that up too. And besides Wieliczka, there's another salt mine nearby, in Bochnia. It is worth seeing too, it has attractions that Wieliczka doesn't, like underground river with boats.
When I was a child we went on a school trip there. There were not many tourists back then and we used the old elevator from what I remember, which didn't feel very safe. I went there recently and was surprised how popular this place became with foreign tourists. Glad you enjoyed your trip :)

I was there. Every time I thought they have just shown me the most impressive chamber on the planet they guided me to another. In elevator you can feel the wind as you go up. Everything is so unreal.
There used to be a hospital ward down there, in Wieliczka, it specialized in asthma condition and other respiratory conditions, a lot of world celebrities and world's statesmen have been patients there, the place has constant tempreture and humidity, therefore a four week admission has produced an evident cure for these ailments, it still may be there, however, some three hundred feet below the actual mine.
Does this place blow your mind?! 😲

Your reaction was soooo emotional to me. I did cry !
oh Eileen, thank you for this video.
As soon as I saw the lift back up to the surface I was sold! 👍
haha fair point! ;) We were very thankful for the elevator, even if we were packed like sardines 😆
Been there several times. Never get tired of it. --- awesome.
That's great and makes a lot of sense! It feels a bit like the Lord of the Rings in there to me...
Myself and my friend are visiting the mine on the 20th, I can't wait
👍
Thank you for showing us!
Hey Heather! Glad you enjoyed seeing it too!

I really like your film work. Pictures, editing, background music and emotions. It's very professional and unusual on youtube. Thank you!
Thanks for your lovely comment! Film and TV is our background :)

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is an amazing place. I would recommend!
How incredible......I’m so glad you showed how you got there .....the costs of the tours are nuts. Train seems like the better option.
I was there when I was a kid. It was very impressive indeed.
Wieliczka is really amazing. I love how Americans are excited about it:) makes me even prouder of my country!:)
👍 ja zabrałem tam ostatnio moją znajomą z Filipin i bardzo jej się podobało, była zachwycona! Niestety nie udało się mi nic nagrać wtedy, tylko nasza wizytę w stolicy.
No words! Incredibly beautiful and mind-boggling 💕
Absolutely! I feel the same 😍
POLSKA TO JEST PIĘKNY KRAJ ;)
tak :)
I’ve been there in November and it’s such a dreamy place filled with history. Love it
Thank you so much for this video!!! I grew up in Poland not too far from Krakow. I visited the mine when I was a child and don't remember a whole lot, so this video is really priceless to me. I'm so incredibly glad that so many international tourists come see it. Thank you again. You guys are so fun to watch and listen to. Cheers!
Wow thanks. For the first time someone probably appreciated Poland... 😃
We love Poland and made lots of videos there if you'd like to see more :) They're here in this playlist: bit.ly/PolandPlaylist
I've been here this year in vacation :)
PS To everyone: This place 8:03 looks 100x better in real life

Yeah I grew up in Poland I visited so many cities and places never heard much about Wieliczka salt mine ... that place is definitely #1 on my list. Thnx for your video and opinion.
That's great it's at the top of your list now! I'm sure you'll enjoy visiting. Where in Poland did you grow up? We've made a lot of videos around Poland if you're interested to see more: bit.ly/PolandPlaylist :)
Wieliczka to wspaniale miejsce.
Hopefully I won’t lose directions next time xD
9:00 those floor tiles remind me of the tiles at the start of Raiders of the lost ark where Indiana Jones has to step only on certain tiles or arrows fire from the walls lol.
I love those movies!!
Come and visit the oldest mine in Poland. The flint mine in Krzemionki is from 3900 BC, much older than the piramids in Egipt.

That's awesome! I'm glad to hear that and hope you enjoy it :)
Great video as always. Your channel sort of inspired us to sell everything and start vloggin! We were in Krakow, and the salt mine, earlier this year. Keep travelling, we love your content !
Yes my country is beautiful and the safest country in Europe God bless Poland
I'm glad you went to Wieliczka Solt Mine, amazing experience! Last time I took my filipina friend there she loved it.

I 'm Pole and I thank You for this movie. You shoud come to Gdańsk this time.
Thank you! We'd love to come back and visit Gdańsk and more of Poland. I'm sure you can tell we love it from all the videos we made there :)
Glad You liked it - always welcome in our Country :) cheers!
Thank you :)
When I was a child we went on a school trip there. There were not many tourists back then and we used the old elevator from what I remember, which didn't feel very safe. I went there recently and was surprised how popular this place became with foreign tourists. Glad you enjoyed your trip :)
Amazing!!!
It's absolutely EXTRAORDINARY!
Such a shame my dear Eileen i was born in Krakow and lived in that fascinating city for 26 years and never made itt to the Wieliczka salt mine..
You inspired .me and iw will go there when i visit my country nex time.
All the best for you and your boyfriend !!!

I was there. Every time I thought they have just shown me the most impressive chamber on the planet they guided me to another. In elevator you can feel the wind as you go up. Everything is so unreal.
👍
Byłam tam. Rzeczywiście ładnie....
It's good to mention that by being in there, the salt is cleaning your lungs when you breath. There is a similar place in Romania.
It was great. All the best from Poland!
Thank you! All the best back ❤️
Greetings from Poland!
