DW, you couldn't have picked a better person to represent Poland, and Krakow than Eva and Vilk. Excellent spokesperson in whatever she does. Good job, a truly honest and real personality.
I have been following Eva on YT for quite a while, from crossing the Black Sea over the USA and then to Poland, her birth country, where she recently bought land. She is an inspiration for many, so it was very nice of you to feature her.
Eva, this was such a great video. My first serious girlfriend in high school was Polish. Her father was my boss where I had a summer job. He actually invited me to dinner one night as he wanted me to meet his daughter. Her mother was a very strict Catholic and very traditional. She would not let her daughter shave her legs until she was 16 yrs. old. I first met her when she was about 15 and she got a lot of teasing because of it. She was a beautiful girl, but also had a heart of gold. We dated for about a year then I went off to college and life just happened and I never saw her again. I asked my dad once why people liked to tell jokes about Polish people. He told me when he was overseas in World War II he went through many towns & cities in Poland and that Poland was the first place where he saw stores that had "electric eyes" that automatically opened the door when you approached it. He said the Polish people were very friendly, loving people and only ignorant people tell jokes about other people they don't bother getting to know. I'm proud that he helped liberate Europe from Hitler's rule. My dad was at Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge. He passed thru Buchenwald Concentration Prison a few days after it had been liberated. He lived to be 100 years and 4 months.
interesting post. I think I know where the perception of Poles as second-class people comes from. Poland was partitioned in 1796. One of these invaders was Germany, whose policy of ruling over Poles was based on discrimination, Germanization and denationalization. However, despite Germany's power, Life in the 19th century was very difficult and many Germans emigrated to the USA in search of a better life. On site, they spread their views about Poles and infected the local population with them. There were many more Germans and they enjoyed greater respect, so the effect was that Poles were classified in the same way as those under German occupation. Germany had a huge impact on the impoverishment of Poles, on their perception in the world, and in the final phase they committed the systemic murder of millions of Poles. It is not surprising that Poles still have great problems with trust in Germans.
@@invit87 You've avoided to mention what Russia did to Poland? I have ancestors from both sides, who lived under Prussian rule, and Russian rule. And you know what? those who lived under Prussian rule were happy, that they don't had to live on Russian side. Those on Russian side, hated Russia what they had been doing to Polish people in their concentration camps in Sybir. BTW Krakow was in Austro Hungarian rule, which has nothing to do with Germany
@@marektln but the conversation concerns the reasons for the poor perception of Poles in the West. Russians have never managed to convince the world of negative stereotypes about Poles. Probably because they also had to fight for their good name.
You are asking a very good question about "Polish jokes". I think Poles were very easy target to pick on since they were were Catholics as opposed to Anglo-Saxons; Slavic people where a big portions were farmers in Poland, and did not speak English. Another factor that happened is that some of terrible jokes that were told about Black Americans were replaced with jokes about " dumb Polacks" in the name of political correctness. But the facts are as follows: Poles are one the most intelligent people in the world including Copernicus, Frederyk Chopin, Maria Curie- Skłodowska, Polish mathematicians who broke the Enigma code or Polish physicist Stanisław Ulam who contributed greatly to the Manhattan project that invented the first atomic bomb. My advice is that if someone ever tries to tell you a "Polish joke" just ask them why they are doing that and if you really think that "Pollacks are dumb" ...and a person telling a joke gets confused and they usually stop telling those stupid jokes.
@@patrickstick8249 I've been to so many countries and Poland in my opinion is better than half of them very clean, safe and so much to see . And prizes aren't bad . And definitely isn't a poor country maybe you live under a rock .
I came to Krakow in the far October of 2011 as Erasmus student! I was sitting in the rynek glowny and I understood after 2 minutes that I would not leave it anymore. I called my mum in Italy ( I am an Albanian guy raised in the Tuscan town of Empoli) and i told her "I found my place in earth". 13 years later I created a family with a Polish lady and recently I proudly got The Polish citizenship! Greetings from Krakow Ewa! PL
I LOVE Eva! She's the most amazing & authentic & truthful traveler! So glad to see her doing videos for DW - whose travel videos I rely on for useful information & travel research!! 😇
Nice Eva! Krakow is truly spectacular! I studied Polish there three times in Szkola Letnia at Jagiellonian and loved every minute of it! It is my favorite city in Europe! Such history and atmosphere and culture and beauty! Great to see you show it off! It is a must-visit place!
Having been to Kraków twice (for conferences), first as an omnivore, second as a vegan some 9 years later - this was (culinary) heaven both times. The city has a special vibe, the culture, churches, museums, parks, places, restaurants, pubs - very beautiful and all in all easy to access for foreigners. Thank you for showing some of this to us. Plus, I would recommend Poland's touristic sites for vegans wholeheartedly. Had a great time hiking at the Baltic Sea in summer, had the most amazing dishes, pierogi, sushi, pizza, burgers, "fish" soup, ravioli with fake prawns etc. In my view, Poland is a touristic gem to be discovered, be it the Baltic sea, mountains, cities, hiking and biking paths.
This past spring, my wife and I took a river cruise down the Elbe River, I made sure that we added the overland extension to Poland. Krakow, Czestochowa, and Warsaw. My Dziadzia left Krakow for the US before WW I and went back when he was 70 while it was still under Communism. So, I went for my 70th. I loved Krakow, as did my wife. I'm proud to say "Jestem Polakiem Amerykaninem" (My Polish isn't very good)
"Dziadzia" made me suddenly choke up and my throat tightened. It's been a while since I was able to call anybody that word. Almost forgot it existed. All the best to you and your family. :)
Thank you for this video, Eva! I used to live in Kraków (Podgórze) sixteen years ago and it was the most memorable, magical and freeing year of my life. I will never forget this special city. Your video brought so many memories to me. ❤️

A beautiful girl with her best friend in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe ❤. My city. I was born in Cracow and spent best days of my life here. Thank you for this video, made me hungry though 😊
I was in Krakow about twenty years ago. I was travelling though Poland, then down though the Slovakia, into Hungary, then Ukraine and Romania. It was a wonderful month long trip. Krakow was great, with lots of Buffalo vodka!
Who would ever have thought Poland would be one of the strongest economies and governments in Europe from just 30 years ago? Poland is without doubt a beautiful country. You are definitely a compliment to Polish history and people, and are proving that every day. Keep up the good work. Now I have to find some good veggie food.😎

Oh, through experience i can confirm that Poland, especially by the sea is very dog friendly. We spend our family vacation in Poland in the summer of 2022 and 2023 by the sea and never had an issue. We could take our dog to the beach and he was welcomed at every restaurant we went to.
