Barnes is spot on.. instead of picking players to suit your tactics and formation, Southgate had players playing out of position because of their name but kept players who actually play those positions on the bench. A team full of superstar names playing out of their positions doesn’t work, you need balance and you pick players to fit your system.

@@El-hefe_ if you're going to use stats yeah make sure they're right. And as for being right. Grass is always greener isn't it.
I mean what kind of manager starts the premier league player of the year. Who has hit the woodwork a couple of times, had a shot cleared off the line, had a goal disallowed for offside and an assist disallowed for offside. On a different day/month he has a couple of goals and an assist.
Pep obviously doesn't have a clue either does he. You know the guy that sold Palmer and kept Foden. But obviously you know more than actual professionals who get paid to make decisions.
While I would have liked to see Palmer play a bit more and maybe have a start or 2 throughout the tournament. It's ridiculous to suggest Southgate should be sacked because he didn't play a very good player over another very good player.

  • @Pad13
    @Pad13 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

I can accept losing if we give our all and played to our best level. I cannot accept losing cos we are poorly coached, set up and instructed. We have a serious chance of winning something with this group of players… especially given the general level of the competition. We can’t waste another tournament under Gareth. He’s clueless.
In the 90’s and 00’s we had serious talent and sometimes we were well set and others not at all… but the competition was insane. Brazil, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Portugal. We might never have a window of opportunity like this ever again. Any other country would have sacked Gareth after the Italy final… we offered him another contract. I fear we will do the same again.
The whole country seems to see where he’s going wrong so why can’t he? He started the tournament with 3 no.10’s, nothing on the left and an experiment in MF with Trent. Why the hell are we tinkering at the main event!?
Ok so he’s insistent on playing Foden, Kane and Jude. I was calling for a 3-4-3 to make sense of that situation… was so chuffed when he actually made the change. Then I realised the only reason he did that was to go like for like with the Dutch (confirmed by Foden in interview). Then the lineup comes out and he’s still ballsed up the lineup. Why wasn’t Trent utilised as the right wing back? Why Trippier on the left? Why in a tournament without any width on the left, did Gordon go unused?
When Germany lost a semi on home soil in 06 they ripped up the rule book and completely restructured everything top to bottom. 4 years later a group of their kids are blooded into the WC and another 4 after that they’re winning the thing. You watch what they do now they lost in the quarters. You watch what the FA does! Too many people are blowing smoke up Southgate’s bum hole that the FA will probably think he’s the right man for the future. “He’s brought the team together” they say… this is hardly like managing the Scousers from the 90’s and the class of 92. Lads playing for teams that kick lumps out of each other during the season. If you can’t create harmony between the likes of Saka and Foden then you’ve probably got a personality disorder. These lads grew up together winning things for the England youth. They’re already all best mates… playing in a time when almost all football players are friendly with each other.
I’ll give Southgate one thing. Only one! Those were some slick pens. That’s his doing. Hats off for that. The rest was turd!

We needed pace upfront last night and we had virtually none. Gareth got the team selection wrong; he should've started Watkins and Palmer, maybe even Gordon too, but he went with Kane who looked unfit and Southgate even admitted to knowing that in the post-match interview. The argument that England has the best players is very subjective. Cafu recently said that Brazilian players who play in England think they are the best in the world because of the hype in England. Brazil's midfield is the worst ever Joao Gomes- Wolves, Bruno Guimaraes- Newcastle, Douglas Luiz- Aston Villa, Andreas Pereira-Fulham, and Lucas Paqueta-West Ham all playing in England but thinking they are world beaters. England lack creative prompters, compare them to Spain, Ruiz, Rodri, Predri, Gavi, and Zubmendi are better prompters than anyone on the England team. Don't focus on "position" your prompters can even be right backs like Philipp Lahm, a left back like Alaba, or a center mid like Rodri. Look at the top Champions league teams England has no player who is the creative hub of the team ala Rodri, Kroos, Modric, Tchoumeni, and the list goes on. England when cornered will revert to their DNA which is long balls. Dominating possession in your own half means nothing....

People are gonna keep debating players but this isn’t the problem, the biggest problem is the manager and it’s not a selection problem, it’s an anchor player problem… you choose one player who’s your anchor player and all other players are selected to play around that player… and the style is centered around that, for example if your anchor player is Kane, Jude/Foden/Saka shouldn’t start, you need LF&RF next to Kane focused on running behind and scoring… the midfield becomes a working 3-man, Rice-Wharton-Gallagher, Trent/Trippier start on the sides to bomb up and down providing wing support…,
That team plays similar to Klopps main teams which was centered around a striker who dropped more and created for the LF&RF,
that team is completely different to a team centered around Watkins/Foden/Palmer/jude as the front 4 cause then you got 2 CDMs supporting that front 4 and defensive RB&LB

It’s time the role of the England Manager is changed, has less power and should become a coaching only role allowing a technical structure to be put in place as there is in club football where hierarchy establishes a style of football and then picks players who fit that style. The coach then works with those players to ensue that style is met. This means players aren’t just picked by one person - the manager - who only tends to pick his favourites or swayed by popular opinion.

John already said Gareth is not the man in an indirect manner.
John said player power is so great that Gareth did not pick the team that should have played rather than the ones other people wanted to be played. We dont need a weak manager, therefore, who is forced to use players because they have more power than the manager.

  • @MrCrashturner

If Southgate has a preferred formation and tactical approach. Then bring players in that can play that system. Players should be picked solely on merit, no favourites. That is the issue we're in now. Maguire and Rashford were rightfully dropped. Southgate had Gordon and Bowen on the bench. Both players who like to run and can be very effective alongside Kane. He opted for Foden, Saka and Bellingham who don't do that. If that is what he wants to play then that's fine, but pick a striker who can do that. Kane was not fit. That was obvious for the world to see. Yet he still persisted with him. Watkins comes on and makes an immediate difference.
It's the Gerrard and Lampard situation, yet again. Jude is not a 10, and he's not a 6. Foden is not a winger. To compensate for that, he had Jude wide left, and Foden as the 10. Takes off Mainoo and drops Jude alongside Rice as a double pivot 6. He's not strong enough mentality to deal with the fallout of dropping one of them or taking off Jude, and he doesn't have the tactical fortitude to find a system that works with them both.
This has nothing to do with the result in the final. England were poor throughout the tournament. Up against tactically superior coaches, Southgate is consistently found out.

In fairness, I have never been a fan of John Barnes, but what he is saying is totally spot on, more or less. This is how football-or any sport-should be played. Don't just keep picking the media-hyped flavour of the month; pick players that will fit into a system. We don't because we don't have a system. We are our own demise, continuously giving players way too much credit - they are not great players end of. All this "world-class" talk has to stop. The Premier League is not the best league; it's just the league with the best marketing; there's a difference.

southgate has got to walk if the FA won't do it for him. if he can't bench foden and kane because he already has this idea of his "best XI" and they will play no matter what, despite coming out later saying kane wasn't fit the whole tournament, that's a disgrace sorry, we need to move on. this is international football, its for the whole country there's no room for selfishness. why is it that "we cannot drop kane". he didn't get in the box the whole tournament, we wasted this moment we get every 2 years at most. why did gordon only play 4 minutes the whole tournament, I bet he would've ran at an aging dani carvajal. palmer also being asked to do a hero job for 15 minutes each game and never getting a chance to start at 0-0. it's not about getting to finals, we need to get over the line now and we need an attacking manager. i like the guy, but his time has to be over. ride off into the sunset.

I have to disagree with Barnes on not picking players in form and sticking with those who fit your system. This isn't a club side, this is where it is an honour to earn that shirt and cap! So many players throughout the years in the Prem got overlooked who had amazing seasons just because those in front of them were big names! You can't sit here and tell me Rashford should have been in the squad ahead of Gordon or Sterling ahead of Bowen....it makes a mockery of trying to earn your spot and represent your country. Now if after say 10 caps, it isn't working for that player then I can understand leaving them out. This squad failed because we had a pragmatic manager who played 4 defenders in every game, made Rice sit in front like a 5 and Mainoo didn't really move much further forward either. As soon as we have a forward thinking manager I think players like Foden will play a lot better.

Play to a style which is reflected through the age groups. 'Jamaica' John doesn't have a problem with a foreign manager in charge of England. Personally, it made my stomach turn, watching Martinez sing the Portuguese national anthem. Imagine, say, Klopp taking England to a final vs Germany. He's not going to sing along with our dreary anthem, surely. Subconsciously he'd be thinking 'God, if my team beat Germany, how's that going to look? Anyway, I'm not a little Englander, much deeper than that. Southgate has done a terrific job in many aspects and the groundwork is in place for a better tactician to take the reigns. He's a lovely bloke but his football is overly cautious and quite frankly, boring. I'd appoint Potter, as soon as Gareth resigns and say, 'You've got one tournament, then we are appointing the next in line. Enjoy and good luck'

@@thrilla72 Yes, Sherlock. I do realise that. Secondly, Klopp wouldn't be managing the UK. My point is simple. I like Klopp, and his football but managing a country that you are not a 'fellow Countryman' of - brings unnecessary pressures to both party's. Barnes is right about Rashford and Sterling but not Harry Maguire. England's system is too limited with Harry Maguire as he's too slow to play a high press and his set piece attributes don't compensate for his other frailties. Defensively With Gueye, Walker, Stones, Shaw and up front with, Rashford, Sterling, Saka, Watkins & Gordon, England have the players to play the high press. This would then bring an opportunity for players like Alexander Arnold to play in midfield because of his ability to find runners. There was no point in playing AA with Kane & Foden as they don't run in behind.
