Nasty trifling brother in law and his nasty woman were living at my mother in laws and stopped paying bills. I invested money to update her kitchen and installed an island. Because they had to leave due to not paying rent, they destroyed the house, the plumbing and carved up with wood on the side of the island with a knife. It is his mom’s house! They poured grease down every sink and toilet and backed up the system. I will have to repair the side of the island and repaint the entire thing. Just nasty and hateful. I appreciate this tutorial.

Yes usually. I would have to see to get a better idea of what it needs. But yeah normally you can sand with a lower grit to remove the old stuff and work your way up higher i usually go 80,120, then 220 on the sandpaper grit. Stain and then gloss if it has gloss.

This looks like it came out much better, but that job screamed to be block sanded.
The door wasn't damaged as badly as the trim, and from what I saw the trim area still looked very irregular when you painted it. Why not use an orbital sander on any flat surfaces, and then on the trim, recoat with skim of water putty and final sand? The corner profile 90 was still left low, and it would have hidden all of those pock marks.
