This was very helpful. My cats have scratched up some wooden beams in my house and I've been desperately looking for a way to fix them. The only missing link for me is figuring out how to paint it over to look like wood so that the fixes match the rest of the house...

Just a fyi.... Cats don't walk with their claws out. They're retracted and walk on their soft pads. They were most likely using that area as a scratching post, but scratches don't occur from just walking around. The owners were negligent with not putting something there to prevent & deter.

I have really enjoyed watching you and Hilary doing your house up. We are now on our 5th house, we are a lot older than you, but this last one has been hard going. It's much bigger and therefore everything is more expensive and takes longer. We are in UK , btw. My husband is actually a builder but it's still just as difficult and after a hard day at work building it's difficult to get motivated in the evening. Our current project is our eldest son's (he's 25) rom. We changed a round bay window into a square one, the size? 2.4 m long by 1.66m drop!! The wooden blinds alone have cost a small fortune. Anyway, I digress, great to watch you and glad you've started your own channel. TFS x

I need to do this, but in door frames. Some of them have curved edges, will the putty knife work around rounded edges on door trim?

I wonder if one could use a sponge to wipe it off so only the scratches are filled in and then use Minwax on it. It is a shame to paint the nice wood trim. I suppose one can treat the trim to get it looking newer and keep the scratches as character marks.
