Burgers aren’t supposed to change colors…
But if you fish with artificial lures and you’ve ever seen a fish suddenly turn away from your lure, that’s probably what the fish was experiencing.
See, in the water, certain lure colors undergo color shifts.
This spooks the fish off and you don’t catch as many fish as you could.
Most experts recommend just a few lure colors, but when you go into a tackle store you see aisles and aisles of different color lures.
This is where the old saying, “Fishing lures catch fishermen not fish,” comes into play.
All of these options and colors are to get us buying more and more lures, not to help us catch more fish.
So I created this video to share with you exactly what an underwater lure color shift is, what lure colors experts recommend, and how you can avoid wasting your money on lures that just don’t work.

If the lure's perceived color changes under water, then so must the perceived color of the small fish, shrimp, and crabs that the fish eats. The fish should already be experienced with the color changes and not be spooked by it.
I dont think color is the main reason for the fish being spooked. Fish are known to strike unnatural color lures. It comes to the quest how dumb fish are. Fish are not that dumb, they are clever enough to remember dangerous things. A fish hooked on a fluorescent lure before would very much remember the color to associate it with danger as its unnatural color. Natural color might fooled em twice, but 1st timer would strike a fluorescent lure out of curiosity, aggression etc. Colors do change in different depths, but if we took a red color fish out of the water, and copy the color exactly to a lure, logically that lure will look the same in the water as the fish...
@@lolz9418 they somehow seems to know not to mess the hook, its ok to touch everything else but the hook. Before there was braided line, we had puffer fish biting off the mono line rite on the water surface, but never touch unbaited hooks no matter how shiny they were.
So just to save ya'll some time. TLDR Use natural colors, because there is a possibility that bright unnatural colors can possibly spook fish. Here's why as the fish get closer to your lure it can possibly get spooked by a color change or shift, due to how colors fade out in varying depths of water. This loss of color is not only from vertical depth but also horizontal depth.
But then electric chicken is one of the best hitting lures out there. I'm just saying...

So,...consider this. When you see a critter change color..especially if it goes from dark to hi vis. In nature it most often is a trait of a poisonous or toxic bad tasting animal. Those colors/shifts mean something to the predators.

The thing about black and gold is spot on. When my creek is murky or chocolate milk (which is often) black and gold anything tends to do much better. When the water clears up, white, silver and light grey (white or white-ish colors) tend to do really well.

Brilliant marketing plan. I'm certainly contemplating joining the club. I look at the videos on a regular basis and practice some of the techniques while fishing the week-ends. Received my Shadies today. I'll try them out this weekend in coastal NC.
Fish are naturally camouflaged just like land animals and bottom dwelling sea creatures. After watching this and several other research projects and documents, I am convinced the shift color is what spooks the fish. People pay a lot of money for realistic painted lures but now I find it a waste of money given that these fish are probably not that visible to other fish in order to survive.
Why do you think I’ve had such terrific success w white tails hooked on a chartreuse gig head? What happens to chartreuse color under water? Thank you

I use z man diesel minnow with gold flakes and regular wasn't until i gave up artificial lures but ive watching u guys a they make a big difference all the other colors i lost alot of money but no more white or black thats it i wish years ago i would have u guys i would saved alot of money thank so much

NO DOUBT that Slam Shady color is awesome for all fish inshore. I've also used it in fresh water for striped bass. I really wish it was made in panfish sizes too.
The only other color I have that much confidence in is New Penny.

It depends on the water depth & colors disappears in order of the primary colors. Red then yellow then blue as seen in a rainbow.

For me it's sillouette,vulnerability,fashes from the fishes scales,to replicate distress,is this why jigging works so well,if only you could replicate up and downs and going in circles that's the key with lures not colour. The only thing I know that can achieve this is livebait.👍

That is an interesting theory. But I don’t see how what a scuba diver sees underwater correlates to what a fish sees underwater. Human eyes can see in color, and from my understanding fish can only see in black/ white/ grey scale. One thing I’ve noticed from personal experience, freshwater bass fishing is that bright colors usually get bit by more aggressive fish. It is almost seems that bright colors make aggressive bass angry and annoyed. Just my opinion though ✌️
One author was a scuba diver, the other was an optometrist. Both noticed the color change thing, and both researched it (and published their findings), but in slightly different directions from each other. It’s the combined research of the two of them, put together, that these guys used to develop their color.
I am actually ready to buy a pack of the original Slams. I hope there is a Black/dark red version available soon because that option should work well on the walleye at night, or just fishing an inlet at night as well.

What causes an underwater color shift?
Water absorbs different wavelengths of light at different degrees, plus the tide going in and out can cause changes in water color

Yep, there is a hook sticking out of your bait. Yet the fish is fooled by motion, action, color , smell, etc. Thus the essence of fishing.
