Hello, German here. "Half a school year" is vastly understated. We spent at least two school years on the topic. One in elementary school to get the gist of it and how horrible it was. And one in middle school with more political and gory details... That doesn't mean that it didn't come up here and there outside of these two dedicated school years, though.

If you want to learn more about the Gulags I highly recommend "Gulag: A History" by Anne Applebaum.
They actually did have alot of population problems in the Gulags especially during Stalin's purges so they would regularly incite riots inside the camps so the guards and prisoners could kill each other, not to mention the forced labor till you died and the random execution quotas.
