As we said, this was the pure by-product of Niki taking Ron Howard around the circuit. The video was a pure afterthought and just allowed you guys to share the journey. Sorry if it didn't suit everybody's taste but there's plenty more on the site if you want more conversation - like Lewis and Nico doing their own Nordschleife laps...
Damn. Mercedes being as German as it can get. Perfection, professionalism and quality is woven into your DNA I guess. What is it with Germans? The air you guys breathe? Is it just in the soil you guys walk up on? Massive respect! Germans and the Japanese I'd say are the epitome of perfection.
@@krishnayashwanth84 wow thank you a lot brother!! As a german i'm obviously proud to hear this! But you know, every country and its culture is truly amazing and special.
If you look closely they actually cut the turn itself and Bergwerk; I was so confused for so long why he never did the turn at the bottom of the hill. :S we've been duped! Maybe they stopped and chilled there for a bit before carrying on?
Isn't that one of the biggest draws to professional racing? People don't go to races to see people drive carefully and never take their cars/abilities to the max, and sometimes beyond.
Nathan Yeung I know this comment is very late, but according to the movie Rush he only drove fast in races because there was a big reward (money, recognition, victory). There are no such rewards on the open road and not in this video either.
@@mecongberlin it's actually no big deal to him in his autobiography he wrote that he has no memory of the accident itself, so when he saw the film of the crash for the first time he saw it as if it happened to somebody else, he didn't feel any emotions regarding it as he visited the place after the crash as reporters said he should go back there. He just said something like "aha, the barbecue place". They then thought he was so cold and without emotions, but he really didn't have any connections with this place in his mind.
I'm surprised that Niki still drives that hard on that track since it is the place where he crashed and lost his ear and other parts of the skin on his head during that horrific accident in the 70's... Nice to see that he can still do it though :-)
Robin van Dijk he wrote in his book that he has no bad feelings towards the ring, also he has no special emotions in that particular corner. in fact i was amazed how well did he took the accident as his fate and refused to get his 'face' back when offered.
That's another proof of how tough he is, enough to accept that even that tremendous crash is part of his life and surely changed it very deeply: you're not the same person anymore after you came across an experience like that, your attitude towards life inevitably changes, YOU change. So it's just silly to desire your FACE back, that's just surface and only a stupid man would reckon it's important when what's deeper has changed forever... Plus, I think that when he was younger he was kinda proud of his scars, look at how he always showed his burnt side to cameras.. ;) And he'd fully have a right to that, for these scars are the proof that he's been stronger even than Death, a far greater trophy than any World Cup!
flyingtrashbin I think the Ring was mad that he was - and will remain - the only person to beat the 7 minute mark on the full old track, so tried to take him out the following year. But he rose from the ashes...now the Ring fears HIM. (Um, Mr Howard, I wanna be a screenwriter :) )
Fair play to him. Going round that bend where he had his crash must still be hard for him. Ok, going at low speed but it must still bring back unwanted memories. Big balls! I wouldn't g.o anywhere near the place if i was him
+Sion Lewis He returned to his career after the crash. Some people just work through it, accept that it's an occupational hazard an grow a pair. It's what we've done before everyone having their feelings hurt all the time.
Fantastic. Niki was entirely relaxed yet you could hear the motor bellowing. Onboard ride with one of the quickest and bravest drivers ever on the Ring, and one of the drivers who contributed to the legendary reputation of the Nurburgring. The chap in back getting thrown around was having some issues, but good on him for holding the camera more or less level.
Why do they hire people who can't bear the speed in a show like this? The cameraman is almost like having a panic attack as he is so annoyingly sighing throughout the whole vid...
Yep... you guys got it! Check out Niki's comments later in the lap once he's warmed up and starts chatting. The stuff around Bruennchen, in particular, is absolutely fascinating...
Loved it! Hell, I'd watch Niki Lauda drive a golf cart stoned on Beta-blockers. I felt bad for Ron Howard - He's in the passenger seat thinking 'This old man is gonna get us killed'. Relax Ronnie... that's NikiMotherFuckinLauda behind the wheel. Even if Niki Lauda became the oldest living man one day, he could still probably lap my ass at Nurburgring. Love you Niki!
I doubt Niki was laying any Ghost to rest driving around the Nordschleife again. He put those behind him back in 76 after climbing back into an F1 car still in great pain from his injury's of a few weeks before . A real drive and Hero who we will never see the likes of again. Most of the great drivers make driving at speed look like a Sunday drive out .
Camera guy was scared shitless. And btw, Niki, while driving on the limit, explained the corner where he had his near fatal accident. Once a driver, always a driver. From cradle to crypt.
Hi Rd Rg, sounds like you need to listen again! The lap was captured on iPhone as a pure by-product, the main point was to take Ron Howard around the circuit. He gives plenty of short insights as they go round, and if we didn't leave you eager for more, maybe you wouldn't enjoy the treats we have coming up for the rest of the week...
@mercedes Just before the left lauda turn (4.10) lauda say something, then the video is cutted after the next right corner? Why? What they told in the place of the accident? Thx for this video And to see Niki dance gently and precisely with the wheel of this wonderful vessel
Did this at much slower pace in a C180 hire car in December, that pedestrian crossing just before Ardenauer Forst is best treated as a real one with someone on it, cause even at walking pace the steering gets squiggley twixt the following left hander and the Ardenauer Forst right hander, its where much of the Nurburgring Crash footage seen all over the tube is made.
funny that people are saying Niki is driving slow, Topgear's commercial car lap record is merely 9-10 minutes and Niki is already 63 and this is also a 9minutes ish lap while the top gear drivers are like 3-4x.
You know what would be cool ... Just imagine being able to sit in the back seat and play on the new PS6 "GT 7 Nordschlefie Special Limited Addition" on the S-Class Mecedes in car video system.. while Niki drives ....

With an old Ferrari 312T2 from 1976, driving on the Nordschleife almost kills people named Niki Lauda. Interesting how smooth his steering input is, and how he uses an absolute minimum of lock. World Champion for a reason.
Look at they way he's driving like an old man.
Niki Lauda: There's no need to drive fast, it just increases the percentage of risk.

+O James This is way faster than it looks. A nine minute Nordschleife lap is faster than a lot of wanna be racer guys in their Porsches can manage.
Niki Lauda ist kein guter Mensch, er kann fahren wie er will. Es gibt viele gute Fahrer, die auch den Respekt verdienen.
