    It's been a good long while since I heard Chris say "it's a whole new thing." That must've been back with the P1 and 918!
    His take on the whole project has given me a new appreciation for it. The One sounds for all the world like it was a waking nightmare from start to finish (and apparently might still be so), but if Mercedes-AMG of all people had thrown in the towel we'd all say it's impossible to put an F1 engine in a road car... but instead that _have_ done it, which is awesome.

      @@jsleeio You're forgetting the AMG One did it's lap in winter, in poor conditions with the track damp in some areas and on I believe Kesselchen corner about 3:15 into the official TH-cam Video lap record, it had to lift because there was mud on the circuit from 250kph to 200kph, normally that's a flat out corner especially in that car. So no, your opinion is wrong, the fact it was 14s quicker than GT3RS in those conditions is insane, and if they did a dry run no doubt it's got another 10s on the board, with ease.

    • @v0ldy54
      @v0ldy54 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lovelehstuff the AMG One was said having 700ish kg of downforce (they referred to "half the car weight" at a time when the claimed weight was 1400kg, so maybe it's actually 850 considering the real weigth), which is really not that much for a car that heavy (1700kg).
      The standard T.50 already has a better power/weight ratio than the AMG1 (plus even considering poower alone it's not that far off, especially once the electrics run out on the One) and probably a batter downforce/weight ratio too, however it's still made to be an actually usable road car unlike the 1 so it might not be enough to beat it on a track (but it surely wouldn't be far off on specs alone).
      T.50s is a different animal, it's even lighter (852kgs is just INSANE), slightly more powerful (with 725hp it's LMP2 power/weight territory) and with tons more downforce.
      They said (and considering Murray's LITERAL track record I believe them) they actually LIMITED the peak downforce to about 1500kg, and with a huge aero efficiency being a fan car.
      You know what that means? That it can corner at 2.5g, there is just no way the AMG One is faster than that thing, even actual GT3 race cars wouldn't be able to compete with it in any aspect.

      It's still way too early to claim victory. Do keep in mind that this was still a factory prototype and we're yet to see how it fares in the real world. I'm not questioning or sidelining the achievements of the team at AMG, not for one second, but how such a highly strung machine stays relatively reliable is something we'll have to wait n see. Mercedes themselves have been quite unsure of the feasibility n reliability of the engine and is why they repeatedly sent out feelers out to and even flied in those who put down deposits to ask them if they would opt any other powerhouse instead. I believe they were given V12 n V8 options as well. That's also the reason why they ended up with quite a few cancellations. The fact that they informed US buyers at the last minute that it can only be used under _show and display_ led to further cancellations.

Very odd to work so hard to get that engine to work when nobody particularly loves the current F1 powertrains (even if they are incredible technical showcases).
    Frankly, it doesn't even seem like it's moved the needle much beyond the 918. Put the 918 on custom developed versions of the latest rubber and it seems like they'd probably be in a similar ballpark. The whole 'F1 Engine in a road car' is a bit of a fallacy. Pretty much everything about it is different to the F1 PU other than the basic block and configuration. The F1 track spec ICE is actually producing more in the region of 800-900bhp on it's own (compared to the 560bhp in the :One) as the MGU-K is only allowed to deploy around 160bhp (and only in short bursts) and the MGU-H doesn't actually deploy any motive power directly as it is used as an anti-lag system to keep the turbo spooled in low rev situations. Having a ~600bhp formula 1 car for most of the lap just doesn't make sense!
    The hybrid element is so much more powerful on the :One compared to the race car, with the 2 extra motors driving the front wheels making up most of the difference in power output compared to the F1 spec ICE.
    Yes, the headlines are the same. But beneath the skin, the :One is a whole different animal.

    Some consumer advice :
    - if you want the best on the road: buy a Carrera GT or an LFA or a T.50
    - if you want speed on a race track : buy a Bentayga, a trailer and a race car

    I like the idea of REAL piped in engine/exhause noise.
    It could be as simple as an electric divider screen between the driver and the engine compartment.
    But yeah, the idea of hearing your engine cut out while braking, fearing that you're going to go straight and hit the wall, instead of actually continuing to brake and steer into the corner.
    I'm sure it must feel very surreal and indeed scary, because you're totally out of synch with the car, no feeling of control over it.
    Like it's possessed, because it surely is cursed though.

    IMO AMG One is impressive but not that too special. Sure it has a F1 engine but thats it. The biggest turn off is AWD. It should be rwd. It should have an option to fold the roof. It should be 200kg lighter. Gears shifts should be fast, cuz thats what a F1 gearbox should feel like. Noise should be louder, its an F1 engine, it should be loud.

    Really didn’t - and still don’t - agree with the philosophy behind this car. A great sounding statement doesn’t always translate well into reality. • @DonLee1980
    @DonLee1980 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It's amazing how they've made the car work, but yes, much of it doens't make sense. The F1 1.6L V6 only makes a little more power than the 2.0L in the "normal" C63 engine. But the F1 engine needs to be warmed up before it can start, and will need a full rebuild after 50,000km, and the whole complicated system is likely to have a nightmare of reliability issues. The other problem is, why did they want to use such a small engine? to keep things light? no, the car weighs considerably more than a mclaren P1 by 200+kg. A car that has a 3.8L TT V8 active aero AND a hybrid system. In fact, recently, Mclaren has offered a new battery upgrade for the Mclaren, in turn reducing the weight of the car by nearly 60kg. So if Mclaren can make a modernised hybrid of the P1 x Senna, the car could have a TT 4.0 V8 with 800hp with an additional 250 electric horses, the car would still weigh 200kg less than this Mercedes. But it will also be able to turn on with a touch of a button, and even when the electric hybrid runs out, the car will still be bloody fast, however, the Mercedes ONE will lumber around like having a GP2 engine when the hybrid runs out.

      That is exactly the point Chris was making. It doesn't make sense but it's cool that it exists.
      If merc wanted to build the fastest road car for the track, they would have used a different engine but the goal was to use an F1 engine. It's the only road car with one which will ever exist With the heritage and success of the Merc F1 team, the value will shoot up even more like on the P1 or any other hypercar I can think of. So for collectors who want something special, this is the car to get.
      Also, it has shown how fast it is on the Nordschleife... I'm wondering why Mclaren doesn't post a time on there, despite they are testing and attempting runs...

    • @DimitarStanev

      @@timlolxP true, it’s not supposed to make sense. More of a technical marvel. In terms of power and weight, it’s not much different to the SF90, and we know how fast that car is both in a straight line and on track despite almost no aero, and doesn’t even have a carbon chassis.
      However imo, the Valkyrie is much much more special, which is debatable I guess, but for sure it’ll be much faster.
