The rivalry wasn't real, it was invented by the record labels. And you guys went in to this claiming to have an open mind and to not be judgmental, then immediately started dissing them for the way they look. Look at some of their other stuff.

The rivalry was embraced by both bands, but both bands were great. Oasis had better better songs and better presence, better live etc. but blur are great, as said before blur initially won the battle but oasis won the war. Both band respected each other, apparently the main reason for the shit between them was actually because Damon’s then girlfriend Justine frischman of the band elastica (who were also great), had a thing for Liam and some thing may have happened etc etc. Spencer’s face during this makes me laugh still.

im a massive oasis fan, but to be fair, blur were awesome in their own right. this was probably the worst way to get into them. dont be turned off, they have some incredible stuff (e.g. the album 'the great escape') and damon albarn (lead singer/guitarist/songwriter) is a musical genius...for real. his work on the chinese opera 'monkey: journey to the west' is amazing.

  • @TheGregcellent

As a massive blur fan, you've picked an awful one to get in to them with. This is a tongue-in-cheek satirical look at a working class London life, with an actor singing the verses. In a lot of ways most of Blurs material is very eclectic so it can be hard to find where to begin. I'd say songs like There's No Other Way may be more up your street, but there's other great songs like Charmless Man, The Universal, Beetlebum, etc. and they span such a wide musical spectrum. Don't give up on Blur yet!
    P. S. This show was recorded for NYE, so they were probably getting in to the spirit of things, you know what I mean? 😉

Not sure many "fans" gave 2 sh9ts at the time either to be honest. Definitely the majority of fans at the time would have been fans of both bands. It was when they hit the chart war where peoples aunties and mothers were buying the singles. By the time I was a teenager and talking to people about music, the Britpop conversation was framed as "are you an Oasis person or a Blur person?" but it was rarely as big a conflict as the media made out. Most people liked - or at the very least were able to appreciate - both but preferred one to the other.

A decent blur song is “for tomorrow”(live at Glastonbury is a good version) or “Sunday Sunday”, "Charmless Man" The difference is influences Oasis were influenced by the Beatles and the rolling stones, whilst Blur were inspired by bowie, the kinks, syd barrett and XTC. Ironically 10 years later you had the same thing in the US with the dandy warhols and the Brian Jonestown massacre.

    Better off watching the video.
Its a great track because it was weird that they got this known actor with a very working class accent doing the spoken word part and then Blur/Albarn do the chorus.
Don't buy into Blur being crap cause Oasis said they were. They were just riffing on cocaine in the 90's. And Liam isnt really open minded when it comes to music. Things are either "rock 'n roll, man" or their not. If they're not, he doesn't like it. Half of "Blur VS Oasis" was contrived by the red-top news media and it helped sell both bands a lot of albums.
I liked both bands but I was only a kid. Music is music.
Blur have a bigger repertoire of diverse music. Oasis just stay in a Rock n roll lane.
Also, Gorillaz (Damon Albarn's project) had Noel Gallagher playing live with them. And Albarn almost lampooning Liam on stage by doing Liam's stance, lol.
    Great Blur tracks to check:
    Beetlebum
    Charmless Man
    On Your Own (brilliant one)
    The Universal
    Coffee & TV
Please check out those fan favourites. Video album versions too.

They're both great bands but Blur were way better musicians. Oasis never really moved beyond 60's inspired British rock n roll whereas Blur were far more eclectic. If you listen to their albums Oasis were pretty much treading water past Morning Glory but Blur's albums were far better, other than Leisure and Great Escape each album was a progression and creatively and musically far superior to Oasis. Also I'm not really sure it's a class thing, I'm working class and in my 40s and although I love both bands I'm far more likely to play a Blur album than an Oasis album nowadays!

The guy doing the talk-singing is not a member of Blur. Basically the album this is from is the band trying to embrace Britishness over the American grunge sound that was so popular in the early '90s. They brought in Phil Daniels who is a British actor and icon of British music for appearing in the film "Quadrophenia" (a movie set to WHO music that is a big tribute to the 60's mod era) and got him to talk in thick cockney slang about the average day as he looks around at regular London life. It annoyed a few people that middle-class guys were piggybacking off of a working-class actor playing an exaggerated character but it was all in good fun. Also its one of those songs which is very fun to attempt at karaoke
