Robbed at Gunpoint in Johannesburg, South Africa

  • I never thought I would wake up in bed to a gun at my face. I thought that sh*t only happens in the movies.
I wrote more extensively about my experience in this blog post:
    www.passportheavy.com/robbed-a...
I travel the world to highlight the beauty in places that might not often be shown. I really want to show the world how beautiful Africa is as a continent. It is the blood that runs through my veins. Before I go any deeper, I just want say that Jo’burg is not all of Africa.
I got love for South Africa and I met so many dope people. It’s unfortunate because I never intended to release negative media on any destination, let alone, a place in Africa. I’ve felt compelled to do so because first of all, I create content as if I am making it for my friends and I want people to have a good time and be safe doing so.
I am glad that in a situation like this, I am not sponsored and I don’t have to make some canned ass response or not even talk about it. I would feel bad about putting people who follow me in danger without knowing all the details.
There is so much beauty in this place but this devil is alive here as well.
Sorry for all the doom and gloom in this post but this was my reality for Jo’burg and it’s worth sharing my very real experience of it so that others can be aware and take even more precautions if they choose to travel that way.

If you have questions about robbery you ask on my IG I will answer what I can.
If I can't get all responses you can email at info@passportheavy.com.
If you wanted to read the article on Davido getting robbed:

I'm South African and visit South Africa and particularly Johannesburg regularly, those criminals were tipped about you guys and probably followed you for hours till you went home. It's shameful to say that my home country is dangerous, no one is safe, local or tourist, it doesn't matter. If you have something flashy, you'll be targeted.

Man, I'm sorry that happened bro. I'm glad all of you are okay. I've been to Jo-Burg a few times and almost moved there. From my experience, the country is a beautiful place, and most people are amazing, the food is great, the culture great. But every single person I met knows of at least one close friend or family member that has gotten robbed there by gunpoint, kidnapped, or worse, sooner or later. Not friend of friend, or heard in the grapevine, but straight up know someone personally who's been through it.
The problem is the government doesn't do enough to stop it from happening again and again, and again. It's a shame. I'm glad you guys are safe.

@Red Carded That's a "her" issue, not a hotel issue. Hotels are, for the most part, the safest place to stay. If you have someone come to your hotel, without hanging out with them first...that's your own fault.

FIRST I WANT TO SAY, IM SO HAPPY YOU AND YOUR CREW IS ALIVE & WELL.💕 BUT I'M GLAD YOU SHARE THIS EXPERIENCE BECAUSE THIS CAN HAPPEN ANY WHERE IN THE WORLD. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE LOCALS (THE THIEVES) SEE YOU AROUND TOWN, THEY KNOW HOW TO FIND YOU AND ROBBED YOU. I WATCH THESE VLOGS OF PEOPLE TRAVELING AND IT HAPPEN ALMOST THE SAME WAY IN ACCRA, GHANA. YOU LIKE TO ENJOY THE FINEST THINGS IN LIFE, BUT OTHERS WANT IT TOO. STAY SAFE MY BROTHER IN YOUR TRAVELS. PEACE!

I lived in South Africa for many years and crime is very REAL there. Thankfully i was never robbed but i've seen some pretty scarey stuff (Murder, Robbery, Car hijacking). You just have to be street smart there. I now live in London. Glad you guys escaped unharmed. God bless you.

      @jovanblom7742 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Well, Jody can speak for himself, I'm sure, but to me, "real South Africans" are people who recognise and realise their true humanity in the way that they treat their fellow human beings - after all - South Africa is the birthplace of the concept of "Ubuntu". Or rather, let me say, that the word "ubuntu" came out of South Africa, but the concept is Africa-wide, and, I suspect, maybe even worldwide. Only through how we interact with other humans can we become truly human...

@Monarc I was appalled by the race baiters, Serag Badr and Black To Grace. What a P.O.S. they are. The topic was about robbery and how that is not condoned, but the two dipshits had to make it about race.

I can feel your pain around this. Great job sharing and starting the healing process. Like i wrote on FB might want to consider a few EMDR therapy sessions (ptsd/trauma therapy). It will help with any nightmares, intrusive thoughts, anxiety, triggers, panic, insomnia, or compulsive behaviors that emerge from this event.
Protect your mental wellness. Hugs, lots of hugs. And way to go making it out alive. This was no small thing.
