Excellent tutorial! Back in 1996, when I was 14yrs old. I had front row seats to, David Copperfield’s “Dreams & Nightmare” tour (same as his TV Special.) @ The Martin Beck Theater in, NYC... He performed this trick exactly how he did on TV, & he had monitors for us in audience to see the trick. However, he wasn’t facing the front. His left side face the audience, and being so close, sitting in front row. You can CLEARLY see him taking each indifferent card from the back & pass to the front in order to do the “change”. At 14 years old and a student of magic... I was SO happy to know the secret!
A variation on putting down the four aces: have all of your aces at the bottom of the deck. When you flourish your final ace to be set in the center and square it to the top of the deck, deal from the bottom of the deck. This way, you avoid the aces sticking to the sticky cards.
I love Shin Lim's ace vanish version of this in his 52 shades of red routine. The cards are actually gimmicked in an amazing way that I wont' expose here.

Unfortunately, I had no cards, I drew some on a paper and put them on the screen, he ended up saying those won't work and changed the magic trick. Freaked me out!

The reason this is my most popular video may have a good deal more to do with the fact that it's almost 15 minutes long, not that it's my best content. TH-cam recommends longer and longer videos to users (see Pew Research link below). If you use TH-cam a lot (I do daily), then I would recommend you watch Tom Scott's video on the algorithm (here: th-cam.com/video/leX541Dr2rU/w-d-xo.html ) perhaps read a bit on it (Pew Research has some helpful articles: www.pewresearch.org/internet/2018/11/07/many-turn-to-youtube-for-childrens-content-news-how-to-lessons/#an-analysis-of-random-walks-through-the-youtube-recommendation-engine ), and--if you get the chance--watch Werner Herzog's documentary "Lo and Behold" (on Netflix). I'm certainly not an authoritative voice on this issue (research for yourself), but we need to diversify our internet inputs or we'll get pigeon-holed into internet echo chambers. I certainly hope you enjoy the magic, I just thought I'd share some thoughts.

For the vanish Copperfield was clearly using his left hand, not the right hand, to make the magic happen. There are multiple ways to remove or replace the top card using the hand holding the deck. You can see Copperfield's left hand doing the preparation moves.
That is a great tutorial, thank you so much! I just have one question that kind of always seems to bug me when I watch explanations like these where the trick uses props: what do you do if your audience wants to examine the cards?? Like what's the excuse for not giving them to the audience? How do you get out of that?
Machoucha Cha I usually do tricks that don't use any gimmicks (95% of the time) so I don't need to bother with that. One thing you can do is tell them of course they can, but you would like to do a few more tricks first and they can see them after and then as you perform more try to look for an opportunity to ditch your gimmicked cards. Remember, you are the performer and you must exude this "I am in charge here" attitude. Never say no to the audience instead direct them to somewhere else or wait until an appropriate time. Be creative. It isn't a bad idea to through in a deck examination during a few times when it doesn't matter so when you move to a gimmicked trick, they will have satisfied their curiosity. Whenever I do the svengali deck I keep another identical regular deck in my pocket. Once the trick is over I put the svengali deck back in the box and in my pocket and if someone asks to see the deck I say 'sure' and pull the regular deck out. Hope that helps, thanks for commenting.
The only difference in the way he did it and the way David Copperfield did it is that the three cards you lay down below the ace at the bottom are face up, not face down. Either way, I love this trick.
Instead of the double tape, I think is better use the Krylon Mate Finish spray, you can put in the face of the duplicate aces and in the back of the gimmicked card.

Interesting. I had read that he used double stick tape in an article once. Magicians wax may have been the culprit or some rough smooth cards. And I thought double sided was invented in the 1940's. Thanks for commenting.

+Noah Scahill I'm at college so most of my time is spent studying. I actually don't practice magic very much anymore and only perform occasionally. I try to practice singing 5 hours a week for my voice lessons but it can be spotty. When I have breaks I kind of gorge on my hobbies. I honestly don't have any great tips here, but if you love it, you gotta feed it.
Are you certain that this is how Copperfield make the trick? Or this is just one method? I believe Copperfield puts all aces facing up before "disappearing" them... Anyways great vids, keep them coming they actually improve competition and better tricks Anything you have on Farquhar?
memokona I don't know how Copperfield does it. This is just a method for a similar plot. I know how Farquhar does his trick that fooled Penn and Teller. I don't think it would be something that most magicians could recreate so I don't think it is worth teaching.

I just notice something very interesting from DC video, you know, he "shoot" the last ace on top of the half of the deck just like you do in your video, then he put the other half on top... and "sandwich" the ace slightly, roll it and lay it on the board, but he never "square" it, at the moment he slide it to the board the card was already halfway off the deck, how can he make a four drop like that? You know what!? I just figure it out, he made not a four drop from the top but from the bottom! =D
he means that it is a difficult trick, and that nobody can do it like Copperfield. Copperfield has hodden secrets for this trick ;) So like the guy do it in this video, Copperfield dont make it the same ;)
How do I get my hands to go "off-screen" with my audience who is sitting right in front of me? And can I have the amazing piano bashing music so I can play them while performing? I believe it will mess them up so badly, they will just clap for the act to be over.
Every good card trick has a weakness. The weakness of this trick is showing four cards in plain sight to look like one card. It might work in low quality video (Copperfield), but you'll get busted in real close-up

I am a professional magician and i really dislike other magicians posting tricks on TH-cam that just anyone can watch. You obviously care more about hits and likes rather then the magic itself. I think it's horrible you expose tricks like this.
I think you're missing the entire point which is the practice is what allows for a smooth presentation. Some people may say the fun part of magic is the wonder, others may say it's the trying to figure out , how it's done. This tutorial isn't exposing really anything where people know it's a "trick," rather showing a method of how to perform a trick. You still need practice, dexterity, timing and showmanship to sell any magic tricks or illusion. As for "magician's code," never to reveal a trick, how are you going to teach others to pass on without somehow showing how to. You can argue that someone doesn't "deserve," to learn an advanced card trick like this but reality is, someone is eventually either going to figure it out or make a very similar trick using different means. This tutorial is just a basis and you can as he mentioned do your own twist. I read other comments where someone says it's okay to "show, how it's done if people are "paying," giving it value. To me, the value is not always monetary. Also, the comment on "not yours," to give, is ridiculous. Unless the person came up with specific equipment designed for the trick I fail to see how a deck of card, double sided tape would constitute "copyright infringement," or stealing someone's patent.

If you want to learn magic then that's fine but do the way all respectable performers do it by going to a magic store and BUYING a book that teaches you the fundamentals. Learning the basics teaches you that time and effort are required to learn any routine. These videos are fine if the performance is the only aspect of it but when you expose the method you not only destroy the mystery behind it but you also destroy the routine for many performers who use it in order to earn a living. Has that thought ever crossed your mind? This is about ethics and respect. If you watch a magic special on tv and you're really interested in knowing how it's done, go and buy the routine for yourself. When you spent weeks or months perfecting it you suddenly adopt a new respect for what you just accomplished. How would you feel if you devoted months to mastering the routine and the very first time you perform it somebody shouts "hey, I know how you did that.......", and then proceed to explain it while you are standing there? Would you appreciate that? I doubt it. You would be very upset about the money you now wasted on a routine that everybody knows the secret to. You won't be performing that routine again. Some of these magic illusions have existed for hundreds of years and have been guarded by magicians for generations in order to perform and entertain the public. Today, very few people have respect for traditions. The attitude today is "I can do whatever I want because it's my right". Wrong, people who expose magic are NOT magicians. They are nothing but selfish hacks who are looking for attention by destroying the hard work of others. Nothing more. When I started out learning magic I would approach other magicians for help. I would never expose anything to anybody and that rule still applies today. What's the point of having magicians perform for people if everybody knows in advance how an illusion works? Secrets are secret for a reason.

You failed to comment on why big name performers no longer tour or make tv specials. Clearly, if they had no issue with this as you clearly don't, they wouldn't have ceased to do both. Damien, you are wrongly assuming I didn't know how to perform this trick. I was not curious about the mechanics of the trick, I was curious to see if the person revealing the trick would show his face in the video. He didn't, of course. The explanation of the trick is really poor, it says nothing about how to stage the performance, it explains nothing about how magic works. The genius of David Copperfield resides in the cure for detail, his demeanor, the story, the music (and many more secrets of live performance), not just his technical skills (which are amazing). None of these appear in this video, just an insufficient mechanical explanation. The person that recorded this video does not have the skills to perform magic, he is not a magician. This is just poor performance in exchange of a few youtube likes.
toquinho79 Brother, I understand your frustration. However, this is the nature of the internet. There is no way to stop exposure, period. Magic will just eventually have to evolve into whatever is next for the art like it has for generations.

These videos are fine if the performance is the only aspect of it but when you expose the method you not only destroy the mystery behind it but you also destroy the routine for many performers who use it in order to earn a living. Has that thought ever crossed your mind? This is about ethics and respect. If you watch a magic special on tv and you're really interested in knowing how it's done, go and buy the routine for yourself. When you spent weeks or months perfecting it you suddenly adopt a new respect for what you just accomplished. How would you feel if you devoted months to mastering the routine and the very first time you perform it somebody shouts "hey, I know how you did that.......", and then proceed to explain it while you are standing there? Would you appreciate that? I doubt it. You would be very upset about the money you now wasted on a routine that everybody knows the secret to. You won't be performing that routine again.
Some of these magic illusions have existed for hundreds of years and have been guarded by magicians for generations in order to perform and entertain the public. Today, very few people have respect for traditions. The attitude today is "I can do whatever I want because it's my right". Wrong, people who expose magic are NOT magicians. They are nothing but selfish hacks who are looking for attention by destroying the hard work of others. Nothing more.
When I started out learning magic I would approach other magicians for help. I would never expose anything to anybody and that rule still applies today. What's the point of having magicians perform for people if everybody knows in advance how an illusion works? Secrets are secret for a reason.
***** Adapted to the digital world? You clearly didn't read my comment because the "digital age" has nothing to do with the ethics involved in magic. You failed to comment on why big name performers no longer tour or make tv specials. Clearly, if they had no issue with this as you clearly don't, they wouldn't have ceased to do both. Also, if you find no issue with this type of video then explain why so many magic creators have gone out of business?
Either you are completely naïve about what has happened to magic, or, you are one of those who goes out of their way to help continually destroy magic and enjoys doing it. So, which one of these two options represents you?
No self respecting magician would ever expose any trick to anybody simply for the reason because the fewer people who know how it's done the stronger the effect is. Just because times are changing means nothing. This is simply an excuse to continue destroying what has been irreparably damaged.
Unless you are able to comment on all of my previous points, you have no valid defence.

To borrow a grammarian's analogy, I'm a descriptivist not a prescriptivist. Usage determines meaning. Effect, not method, determines the magic. I never teach magic the way the right way--just a way. There are probably better methods than mine, but this one works for me. Thanks for watching.

Damien, you are wrongly assuming I didn't know how to perform this trick. I was not curious about the mechanics of the trick, I was curious to see if the person revealing the trick would show his face in the video. He didn't, of course. The explanation of the trick is really poor, it says nothing about how to stage the performance, it explains nothing about how magic works. The genius of David Copperfield resides in the cure for detail, his demeanor, the story, the music (and many more secrets of live performance), not just his technical skills (which are amazing). None of these appear in this video, just an insufficient mechanical explanation. The person that recorded this video does not have the skills to perform magic, he is not a magician. This is just poor performance in exchange of a few youtube likes.
toquinho79 Brother, I understand your frustration. However, this is the nature of the internet. There is no way to stop exposure, period. Magic will just eventually have to evolve into whatever is next for the art like it has for generations.
