I went to a Copperfield show as a child, and he did this trick. I got to be the kid by the board. He did perform the trick a bit different when I was apart of it. One of the coolest experiences of my life.
People will always guess and try to explain this. The truth is what makes Copperfield such a legend is that, especially with this effect, his magic says something. Regardless of how he did it, we all have loved ones far away, and the idea that magic can bring the closer or bring us to them is a very powerful message, which David captures beautifully and brilliantly. Watching Copperfield is bewildering, everything seems so impossible. You can’t even tell what, of the many things you’re seeing is illusion. Cheesy, huge and impeccable.
I was at a live show in our city. The production crew picked my son out of the crowd to help with this illusion. They asked me and my wife if it was ok if he was in the show. We were honored and very excited to have him help. They asked us to sit at the end of the isle and that David would come down from the stage and explain everything my son needed to do just as he is doing with the boy in this version of the illusion. This was the best illusion I have ever seen and my son took part in it! Not an actor, just a kid from the audience.

Some nice tries here, but nobody gets it exactly correct. Actually, I am an illusion designer and I happen to know how this illusion is created. I actually designed a smaller-scale version of this same illusion for another performer on commission. They do not use a blank Polaroid and arm and a digital composite. The Polaroid you see Copperfield holding on the beach is exactly the same Polaroid. The initials on his arm are exactly the initials written by the audience member. You are actually seeing the real, live David Copperfield on the screen above the audience. This illusion is actually created with THREE different components that are all cleverly merged together ALMOST seamlessly. While there are not cut-aways, there are shots from the beach during which Copperfield and his volunteer are NOT on-screen. A portion of the "live" broadcast is actually live from a beach. A portion is actually a rear-projection image. A portion are actually the real, live, people who are "teleported" all the way to... backstage. *** STOP HERE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED *** Go back and watch the video from Copperfield's appearance on the beach forward. You will see Copperfield in pre-recorded footage, followed by LIVE Copperfield. You will see pre-recorded volunteer, followed by LIVE volunteer. The "switch" occurs when Copperfield tells him to run down to the water. The last words from pre-recorded Copperfield are "come on back". Then the pre-recorded Copperfield stays out of frame as Michael runs back to the camera. When he arrives, LIVE Copperfield steps in front of the rear-projected footage and the zoom in on his LIVE arm masks the fact that pre-recorded Michael now steps off to his own right and LIVE Michael steps in front of the rear-projection footage. It is quite cleverly choreographed. I will hand it to Copperfield's designers because attempting to do this digitally wouldn't have been nearly as effective.

It’s a fake story. When this show came to Seattle, I went to both showings back to back. The person traveling with David was different in both shows, but both stories were exactly the same as the one in this video.
This is one of those tricks that keeps me up at night, thinking of ways it's done. Like, I understand certain elements, but as a whole, I'm baffled. I lean towards the theory of a backstage TV studio... and then the guy walks through the water. It's just unreal. This is a phenomenal magic trick.
+spaceye it's a combination of pre recorded footage and live feed. It's a continuous camera shot but the TS and photo part is clearly green screen from backstage as the lighting is different from the authentic footage. The dancing tie trick is far more mysterious to me.
+Mehedict I try to give him the benefit of the doubt that since he always claims no camera tricks it isn't simple special effects. Although obviously some of it has to be pre-recorded, but the mark on his arm and the photo matching... yeah photoshop effects could do that even then, but giving him the benefit of the doubt I am taking it wasn't done on a computer. You could basically do his effect yourself if you had a large led tv and knew what to prerecord and were smart about how you then in real time stepped into the recording. So there are two yous. One of them recorded hints earlier and of course we don’t see his arm. We see him in the sand. The guy whose arm we see. We never see him standing in the sand. But we see his arm.
Although I can't solve the mystery of the illusion per se, I feel like there's a lot of misdirection involved. When a magician puts a big emphasis on specific ways to validate his illusion, it draws the crowd's attention from the trick elsewhere. It makes sense to keep their eye on certain things so they don't notice other details. It's easy to say the random audience members were planted, but I just take that for granted. Everyone plants. Either way, I was impressed by this illusion.

I see what you are saying and agree that it looks like two people jumping off the back end of the platform. However, I saw him perform this illusion in Las Vegas several years ago, and the person that disappeared with Copperfield was a little girl around five or six years old. I don't know how a child that young could physically participate in such a rough and dramatic "escape" like that.
I played the part of the kid when he came to Pittsburgh when I was little! I was chosen before the show, and given the option to participate or not. We ended up getting better seats, and I got a signed picture of David. It was definitely an experience I won't forget. (mostly because of something funny happening before we even went in the doors).

I remember watching the breakdown of the trick in another TH-cam video a few years back. 1) The 'beach' is on a sound stage likely below - common in Las Vegas (Now You See Me film made reference to it) - Notice the camera doesn't do a full 360 pan on the 'beach' 2) The floating platform where they disappear - There's a trap door where they slide in through the '2 inches thick' crane arm which is actually expandable in the middle. Notice at 7:18 the platform moves (1st person slides in) and again at 7:21 (2nd person slides in). - The moving spotlight on the cloth is meant to distract the audience to think that it's David holding the flashlight - The back of the crane is likely covered in mirrors to make it looks like it's hollow. A common illusion in magic acts. One of David Copperfields signature moves for large scale tricks is also staged actors in the audience. Notice how the person who caught the Frisby, The Kid and the 3 other 'random' people all came from the same section of the audience.
It was more of a greenscreen stage than a soundstage. Let me explain. The beach is 100% real, but was prerecorded. In the video, we are watching two different versions of David and Michael, a prerecorded and live version. Live David and Michael are being filmed in real time against a greenscreen with the prerecorded footage of the beach. Here's the breakdown: Starting at 8:10, prerecorded David and Michael appear on the beach. Prerecorded Michael runs toward the ocean. Prerecorded David is out of shot. Then at 8:30, live David appears for the first time. The camera zooms onto live David's arm. Prerecorded Michael is out of shot. The camera zooms out and we see live Michael and live David together. At 8:54, live David gives live Michael the camera. This is the last time we see live David until his appearance in the theater. The camera follows live Michael up until it pans to his father. Then at 9:09, prerecorded Michael embraces his father. Afterwards, prerecorded David disappears from the beach, and live David appears on stage. Rewatch it, but pay close attention to the camera angles. We see prerecorded David and Michael's feet on the beach, but never live David and Michael's feet. That's because they're in front of a green screen. I do not know how the disappearances and reappearances work.

The clouds in the background look exactly the same in the ONE CONTINUOUS shot from Hawaii, since the moment the guy starts repeating everything Copperfield says (including the initials from the randomly-selected audience member), until we see their feet in the sand running towards the waves. The shot from Hawaii is visible the whole time. There is no place to cut away when the camera pans down to the cover on the sand and then to them running in it. Any cut would be obvious. Then those SAME CLOUDS are seen behind the TS AND POLAROID REVEAL, as the camera jerkily moves around. You couldn't do this in a movie this seamlessly today, let alone over 20 years ago: and this would have to be done INSTANTLY, with no time for processing. Also Copperfield literally says that he is NOT doing any green screen effect, camera, or computer trick. I doubt he would go out of his way to literally lie like that, when he doesn't have to.
@@animalanimation5110 The clouds look the same because they are the same. The clouds are part of the prerecorded footage. That footage was displayed on a greenscreen. The camera movements were choreographed to be synchronized with when David and Michael reveal the photo and initials. The greenscreen setup is essentially the same as a meteorologists greenscreen for showing the weather. All you need to do is point a stationary camera at a greenscreen, but play the footage from the beach instead of a weather forecast. Then with careful coreography and synchronization, David and Michael step in front of the greenscreen to give the reveal, then step away and let the rest of the footage play out. The camera pointed at the greenscreen never once moved throughout this. The choreography was done during the footage from the beach. There is no need for edits, cuts, or transitions. As for David's remarks on the integrity of the illusion, all I have to say is that he's a magician. His job is to lie to the audience to fool them, because that's what magicians do, fool us.

But years before they did a trick where he had the audience toss a foam brick behind their back then the one who catches it tosses it, then the next one who catches it tosses it... etc. Writing something they give him each time... I was one of the ones to catch the brick in that trick. And I was not a plant. I did dive for it, in large part to see if it was plants (thinking they in theory could have practiced tossing that thing beforehand knowing where it would land... although unlikely). The trick went on without a hitch and I was not a plant. Which would lead me to think the people in this (at least the ones he used to verify with the photo, etc.) were likely not plants. Although it is possible they were plants, that photo was close enough that it could have been taken somewhere else. Just seems hard to believe all of them were plants.
+Ghais Alhassan Exactly, I tried to be an asshole with one of his tossing people something in the audience and basically intercepted who was about to catch something and was in on the trick... I did not mess it up. He also would have had to get a large chunk different in other locations since some of them are filmed. He definitely uses plants, but don't think for something like this they all are.

The one you were in looks like the old written prediction kept in a box onstage during the whole show trick. 3 non stooge people think up random answers which matches the prediction taken out of the box. No reason this one has any resemblance in method.

I saw him August 2024 in Las Vegas he doesn't do this but he does something similar. He walks up a platform. Curtains goes up and he disappears. Reappears in the middle of the auditorium
7:21 the platform wobbles up & down. I reckon he and the audience member are whisked away through the floor of the platform right then, before any of the visuals that follow. No one even suspects it. He's fast, real fast.
Not the floor they were standing over the audience. I think they get thrown backwards somehow when the curtain flys back, there’s a reason it flew that far backwards.
The footage of them in Hawaii is pre recorded! If you in 6:56 the 'TS' is completely different from the 'TS' that David has on 8:35! Its not written the same way...

In my opinion, the S from the TS that was written on his arm in "Hawaii" looks different from the one on stage. The writing of Amber is completely different as well.

svein ivar gundersen I believe the Hawaii scene was pre-recorded with the audience members being in on the trick as well. I saw a video recently of a magician discussing this kind of trick, such as practicing throwing an object in the crowd to an audience member. After repeating the throw over and over with his back turned, he was able to land the throw every time. Also I'm sure back then, they didn't account for people being able to take instant pictures, comparing the different markings such as the TS.

The difference is that I knew it was fake all along because I had this PRINCIPLE, based in reason and logic, which states that a single person cannot move faster than the speed of light, nor time travel, and thus the empirical evidence I saw was incomplete.
Ok, what is the most simple explanation for this illusion (which you'll probably ignore, cuz it's too simple to be the answer)? That Firstly; most of chosen participants in this show - the ones who help running the story - are actors and actresses, and Secondly, David & the black boy have substitutes...yeah, THESE are the answers!

Watch closely. At 7.26 onwards, u can see two people falling behind. The camera is purposefully stationed front on rather than on the side to hide this.

I remember watching the breakdown of the trick in another TH-cam video a few years back.
1) The 'beach' is on a sound stage likely below - common in Las Vegas (Now You See Me film made reference to it)
- Notice the camera doesn't do a full 360 pan on the 'beach'
2) The floating platform where they disappear
- There's a trap door where they slide in through the '2 inches thick' crane arm which is actually expandable in the middle. Notice at 7:18 the platform moves (1st person slides in) and again at 7:21 (2nd person slides in).
- The moving spotlight on the cloth is meant to distract the audience to think that it's David holding the flashlight
- The back of the crane is likely covered in mirrors to make it looks like it's hollow. A common illusion in magic acts.
One of David Copperfields signature moves for large scale tricks is also staged actors in the audience. Notice how the person who caught the Frisby, The Kid and the 3 other 'random' people all came from the same section of the audience.
It was more of a greenscreen stage than a soundstage. Let me explain.
The beach is 100% real, but was prerecorded. In the video, we are watching two different versions of David and Michael, a prerecorded and live version. Live David and Michael are being filmed in real time against a greenscreen with the prerecorded footage of the beach.
Here's the breakdown:
Starting at 8:10, prerecorded David and Michael appear on the beach. Prerecorded Michael runs toward the ocean. Prerecorded David is out of shot.
Then at 8:30, live David appears for the first time. The camera zooms onto live David's arm. Prerecorded Michael is out of shot. The camera zooms out and we see live Michael and live David together.
At 8:54, live David gives live Michael the camera. This is the last time we see live David until his appearance in the theater. The camera follows live Michael up until it pans to his father.
Then at 9:09, prerecorded Michael embraces his father. Afterwards, prerecorded David disappears from the beach, and live David appears on stage.
Rewatch it, but pay close attention to the camera angles. We see prerecorded David and Michael's feet on the beach, but never live David and Michael's feet. That's because they're in front of a green screen.
I do not know how the disappearances and reappearances work.
@@MuchMoreMatt There is just one problem with that theory. The clouds in the background look exactly the same in the ONE CONTINUOUS shot from Hawaii, since the moment the guy starts repeating everything Copperfield says (including the initials from the randomly-selected audience member), until we see their feet in the sand running towards the waves. The shot from Hawaii is visible the whole time. There is no place to cut away when the camera pans down to the cover on the sand and then to them running in it. Any cut would be obvious. Then those SAME CLOUDS are seen behind the TS AND POLAROID REVEAL, as the camera jerkily moves around. You couldn't do this in a movie this seamlessly today, let alone over 20 years ago: and this would have to be done INSTANTLY, with no time for processing. Also Copperfield literally says that he is NOT doing any green screen effect, camera, or computer trick. I doubt he would go out of his way to literally lie like that, when he doesn't have to.
@@animalanimation5110 The clouds look the same because they are the same. The clouds are part of the prerecorded footage. That footage was displayed on a greenscreen. The camera movements were choreographed to be synchronized with when David and Michael reveal the photo and initials.
The greenscreen setup is essentially the same as a meteorologists greenscreen for showing the weather. All you need to do is point a stationary camera at a greenscreen, but play the footage from the beach instead of a weather forecast. Then with careful coreography and synchronization, David and Michael step in front of the greenscreen to give the reveal, then step away and let the rest of the footage play out.
The camera pointed at the greenscreen never once moved throughout this. The choreography was done during the footage from the beach. There is no need for edits, cuts, or transitions.
As for David's remarks on the integrity of the illusion, all I have to say is that he's a magician. His job is to lie to the audience to fool them, because that's what magicians do, fool us.

+fahad khan It's impossible to have that large number of people without some asshole that blows the trick, and say it was unreal, and staged.
+fahad khan It could be. There are tricks he did where I would bet money that the audience was a plant. But years before they did a trick where he had the audience toss a foam brick behind their back then the one who catches it tosses it, then the next one who catches it tosses it... etc. Writing something they give him each time... I was one of the ones to catch the brick in that trick. And I was not a plant. I did dive for it, in large part to see if it was plants (thinking they in theory could have practiced tossing that thing beforehand knowing where it would land... although unlikely). The trick went on without a hitch and I was not a plant. Which would lead me to think the people in this (at least the ones he used to verify with the photo, etc.) were likely not plants. Although it is possible they were plants, that photo was close enough that it could have been taken somewhere else. Just seems hard to believe all of them were plants.
+Ghais Alhassan Exactly, I tried to be an asshole with one of his tossing people something in the audience and basically intercepted who was about to catch something and was in on the trick... I did not mess it up. He also would have had to get a large chunk different in other locations since some of them are filmed. He definitely uses plants, but don't think for something like this they all are.

The one you were in looks like the old written prediction kept in a box onstage during the whole show trick. 3 non stooge people think up random answers which matches the prediction taken out of the box. No reason this one has any resemblance in method.
auteurAM I know, my point was that throwing that stuff for the audience to catch would he hard to stage and ensure it worked, and based on my experience that technique for audience participation is not rigged.

I saw him August 2024 in Las Vegas he doesn't do this but he does something similar. He walks up a platform. Curtains goes up and he disappears. Reappears in the middle of the auditorium

7:21 the platform wobbles up & down. I reckon he and the audience member are whisked away through the floor of the platform right then, before any of the visuals that follow. No one even suspects it. He's fast, real fast.
Not the floor they were standing over the audience. I think they get thrown backwards somehow when the curtain flys back, there’s a reason it flew that far backwards.

The footage of them in Hawaii is pre recorded! If you in 6:56 the 'TS' is completely different from the 'TS' that David has on 8:35! Its not written the same way...

In my opinion, the S from the TS that was written on his arm in "Hawaii" looks different from the one on stage. The writing of Amber is completely different as well.
+AR John yes the TS is different..its harder to see difference in the picture..could the picture be a copy ? if both TS and the picture had been real they have to had an hawaii look a like stage behind the scene..many possibillities here :)
svein ivar gundersen I believe the Hawaii scene was pre-recorded with the audience members being in on the trick as well. I saw a video recently of a magician discussing this kind of trick, such as practicing throwing an object in the crowd to an audience member. After repeating the throw over and over with his back turned, he was able to land the throw every time. Also I'm sure back then, they didn't account for people being able to take instant pictures, comparing the different markings such as the TS.

The difference is that I knew it was fake all along because I had this PRINCIPLE, based in reason and logic, which states that a single person cannot move faster than the speed of light, nor time travel, and thus the empirical evidence I saw was incomplete.

That Firstly; most of chosen participants in this show - the ones who help running the story - are actors and actresses, and Secondly, David & the black boy have substitutes...yeah, THESE are the answers!

Obviously they are not in Hawaii. Backstage, rear projection, live and pre recorded. They get pulled backwards on the platform to backstage.
I'm an academic empiricist. I believe only what can be empirically proven. Well... David Copperfield just empirical proved he can warp to Hawaii if he wants to.

Watch closely. At 7.26 onwards, u can see two people falling behind. The camera is purposefully stationed front on rather than on the side to hide this.

I dress with jeans and shirt and tennis shoes. I do think think it matters much. I actually caught one of the Frisbees and helped out onstage for the grandfather trick it was an amazing show
