ZZ Plants can survive for long periods before needing to be watered. I water mine every 5 or 6 weeks. One thing to watch out for when using the water meter are the rhizomes. They can be easily punctured. Your care tips are right on target.💚🌿

I use a few air purifiers in my house in the winter. The plants closest to it grow like crazy, a zz plant being one of them (it grows slow but I think fast for a zz)! I think they really enjoy the wind from the air purifier or something! Honestly I didnt think they would appreciate it but they really like it! They are near a west window and the other purifier is near an east window. The ones further from it don't grow as profusely even though they are getting similar sun. I think it maybe simulates wind a bit because the smaller leaves on some of my plants can be seen kind of moving like there is a breeze.
I was watering the zz when the soil was completly dry but I don't think it likes that. It needs to stay dry for a while before I water again and I noticed more growth watering like that. I water it maybe once a month only and its in a 6in pot. I havent completely figured out the zz yet, I think it can grow even faster than it does.

If you like South African tropicals like the ZZ plant you might be interested in the Natal Plum (Carissa macrocarpa). It has that same slight rubbery leaf texture as ZZ does but a dwarf variety with tiny deep rich green color in small bud like clusters. Used as an outdoor ground cover in our Zone 9/10 South Florida, it is a hardy drought tolerant container plant and will cascade in a beautiful waterfall shape and look great in a stylish modern container. Plenty full in Florida distributors, My City Plants NYC might be a resource.

      Hi! Thank you for watching!
Less is more for ZZ plants.
I would recommend using the soil meter amzn.to/3Q0NUXg for establishing a proper watering frequency.
      - Test the soil once every 2-3 weeks.
      - When the meter reading is 1, wait for 2 more weeks and then water your ZZ plant.
Here is my video about how to use this tool: mycityplants.com/plant-care/how-to-use-soil-moisture-meter/
No misting but washing leaves regularly, getting rid of dust is important.

Great video Juliette! I'd love your advice for a small zz plant in my low light bedroom: the tip (4-5 mm) of a few leaves have turned yellow. What could be the cause? I might have been slow at watering it this summer, but pretty sure I watered it at least once a month. My hunch is that it would benefit from being vaporised with water about once a week. What do you think? I have a new gorgeous medium-size zz plant and I want to make sure it will be happy (in my low light corridor).

    • @Mycityplants
      @Mycityplants  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Malichka,
If you can not read a book in your bedroom or a corridor in the middle of the day without turning the light on, then the light exposure is too low for any plant to grow.
Yellowing can be the result of insufficient light or improper watering.
I recommend getting the Soil Moisture meter mycityplants.com/products/soil-moisture-meter to help you to establish a proper watering frequency.
Test the soil once every 2-3 weeks with the meter.
When the meter results are in zone 1, wait for 7-10 days more (small plants) and 14-20 days more (large plants) and then water your ZZ plants.
May your ZZ plants grow healthy and happy!
      Thank you for watching 🌱

Hello, I’m anew ZZ Plant parent :) I’ve had it for about 3 months now. I bought a ZZ online and when it came, it was super wet and most of the soil fell out during delivery.
I repotted them in a slightly larger pot, cleaned off the leaves and stems, and cut any mushy roots it had (there were very few, the other roots are in great condition) and it’s starting to recover. I haven’t watered them yet as I know they store water in their rhizomes but I’ve noticed one of the rhizomes is wrinkly. Idk if that’s a concern.
My ZZ was very moist when it came so I wonder if it was overwatered and that’s why? I’ve also noticed some traits of edema showing up on some of my leaves and some of the tips are black. I’m not sure if it’s because the plant was so wet when it arrived or if it’s just acclimating still to the new environment. Most of the leaves are healthy though and the other rhizomes are healthy too.
Any ideas of where to go from here?

    • @Mycityplants
      @Mycityplants  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sani,
Sounds like you did everything right with the repotting and root pruning.
ZZ plant was wet probably because it was watered in the store or garden center right before you got it and, based on the issue description, was watered too much for some time.
ZZ plant bulbs get wrinkled if the plant is overwatered (sounds like this is the case with your plant) or if it dries out too much.
Also, old bulbs get replaced with new ones naturally so no worries if one or two will dry out and wrinkle.
Make sure the ZZ plant is in good quality well draining potting soil and pot has drainage.
Place it in the spot where the plant gets bright light (indirect sun is best but a couple of hours of sun bathing will be ok).
Fertilize your plant Spring - Summer.

      Hi Carlos,
      Thank you for watching 🌱
      - Make sure your ZZ plant gets a good amount of light.
Brighter the light, faster the plant will grow.
      - ZZ plants prefer a tighter pot - 2-3 inches larger than the root system.
      Drainage is important !
      - Allow the soil to get completely dry ,all the way through, before watering your plant.

My medium size zz plant is a conundrum to me. I had it for several months and it keeps getting yellow leaves and quite often, even entire yellow stems, but I’m not sure why. It’s not getting under or over-watered, it has some natural light and a grow light nearby, it isn’t near a cold draft, and I took it out of the pot to check out the roots in case something was happening inside, and literally NOTHING. I have no idea why the plant keeps loosing entire stems or producing yellow leaves. It’s my firs zz plant and I thought it would be a breeze but I think there is something wrong with it and I can’t find the issue. Very frustrating, especially for a plant that everyone raves about because it’s supposedly “easy going” 😒🤷🏻‍♀️

      Hello Florecita,
Usually yellowing of leaves and stems is due to watering issue. Can also be the result of fertilizing issue (too much).
      - Soil porosity + drainage are important!!!
      - Water the plant ONLY when the soil is completely dry, all the way through.
      - When watering, make sure to use enough water so it can reach lower roots.
*** Get the soil moisture meter: mycityplants.com/collections/indoor-plant-tools/products/soil-moisture-meter
Test the soil once every 7-10 days.
Wait for the meter reading to go down to zone 1 + add 7-10 more days before watering.
      - Do not allow the plant to sit in water after watering.
      - Do not fertilize until Spring. Feed every time you water from March-September.
*** best to use half of the recommended amount of fertilizer (unless you are using this plant food: mycityplants.com/collections/fertilizers/products/all-purpose-fertilizer)
May your plant grow happy and healthy!
Green Luck, and thank you for watching 🌱

@@Mycityplants These are fantastic tips but I’m actually already doing all of these things and still the yellowing is happening. The soil is one third all purpose, one third cactus, one third perlite, so it has good aeration. The pot is only a bit bigger than the roots (not oversized to allow too much soil). The plant is getting water every 3-4 weeks when the soil is completely dry. The saucer under the plant is actually not touching the bottom of the planter so the plant never seats on water (in case I forget to empty the saucer which so far I haven’t done). I use a moisture meter regularly. It has only been fertilized once because when I saw the first yellowing I wasn’t sure if it might was the fertilizer so I stopped. The roots look great so I didn’t see any type of infection or rotting. The temperature in my home is around 70 degrees so it isn’t under any extreme temperatures.
It is literally a conundrum. I don’t find any logical reason for the plant to be doing this. Very frustrating.
But thank you for all your tips. Those are usually the best things to check for when any plant have issues :)

      Hi Tammie,
After repotting plants go through some level of shock and it might take time for plants to acclimate, especially if repotted during semi-dormant period.
Plants are now in the active growth phase and you might see some new growth soon on your ZZ plant.
Make sure to allow the soil to dry out completely before watering and place your plant in a bright light spot.
Wishing your plant a fast recovery and hope it will bounce back soon.
      Thank you for watching 🌱

    • @Mycityplants
      @Mycityplants  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi!
      - Trim ZZ plant leaves near the petiole (where the leaf joins the stem)
      - Use multiple leaf cuttings instead of a single leaf for better results
      - Allow leaf ends to callus over (few hours)
      - Place healthy cuttings in a narrow glass with enough water to cover the ends
      - Position under bright, indirect light
      - Change water weekly or when looks cloudy
      - Repot in soil once new roots appear

Yes, you may place leaves with shorter new roots in the soil but for a better result I recommend to wait a bit longer.

    • @Mycityplants
      @Mycityplants  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Juan.
It takes about 3-5 years to grow a ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) from a 1-2 stem plant into a fully grown plant. They usually grow 6-8 new stems per year (most during active growth period - Spring-Summer) and spread outwards by about an inch or so in diameter per year.
Plants that are getting bright light grow faster!

      Hello Laura,
      - If you have not yet fertilized your plant - it is time to do it!
Feed your plant every year from March till September.
We use this plant food mycityplants.com/products/all-purpose-fertilizer and all plants are loving it.
If you use any other fertilizer, best to apply half of the recommended dose.
      - Make sure to allow the soil to dry out completely before watering and place your plant in a bright light spot.
      - It is best to use the Soil Moisture meter to establish a proper watering frequency.
ZZ plant should be watered when the meter reading is in the 1 zone + wait for 7-10 days (small plants) and 2-3 more weeks (large plants).
Here is our video about how to use this tool before and after watering: bit.ly/3TI2sMb
Plants are now in the active growth phase and I hope your plant will grow some new leaves soon!
