  • Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey is one of the most popular sites in this historic city. This wonder of the ancient world has a long history as a place of worship: as a church for 916 years and a mosque for 482. The building you see today is the third one built on this site. The first was constructed in the year 360 AD and the second in 415 AD. Both burned and paved the way for this one, which is now one of the oldest buildings in the world.⁣ We were shocked to discover Viking graffiti in the upper gallery! Definitely not something we expected to find.
Hagia Sophia was a museum when we visited, but it has since become a mosque.

I was fortunate to visit Istanbul in 2012. What a magnificent city. Breathtaking. Magical. I also saw the Viking graffiti when I went to the Hagia Sophia. What an incredible feeling to be standing on the same spot where a Viking once stood and etched his name. I wonder if he ever thought that his name would last for hundreds of years? Fascinating.

Hopefully you will have many more for your travels around Istanbul while you were there, whether in the old part only or over into the other sections of Istanbul also, however long you were able to stay while there. The Army Museum in Paris "blew my mind" because I had never taken much interest in French history. It led to a lot of post visit reading and an appreciation for how much French history touched and informed western culture. It is not a visual spectacle like bigger more famous museums, it just caught me completely off guard, to an embarrassing degree. 😅 I think the Musee d'Orsay did the same thing to me because I thought Impressionism was just a bunch if nearsighted painters. Again, embarrassing. 🤣

Hagia Sophia is a Christian Byzantine cathedral, Emperor Justinian named Saint Sophia (meaning in Greek, the Divine Wisdom) to this church after it was rebuilt from previous fires in 537 AD.
After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople and its occupation by force of arms from its original owners, it was converted into an Islamic city and its name changed to Islam Paul, and it became subordinate to the Ottoman rule under the leadership of the conqueror Muhammad Al-Fateh, who ordered in 1453 to convert the Hagia Sophia Cathedral into an Islamic mosque after a large Christian church continued 919 Years old.

That explains Swedish looking Turks and Greeks. Also, there was a Goth colony since the 4th century in Crimea where Swedish was spoken until the 17th century. They were called Crimean Goths. However, they united with Crimean Tatars against the Russian aggression and became Crimean Tatars.

Yes we all wondered what did this Viking was doing there. Was he there for business or pleasure? Maybe went to bet on the chariot races in hippodrome LOL..I heard around the 7 th, 8th or 9th century the Byzantines had a Viking guard in the empress courts.. I guess they were usually blonde, I'm like the people who run the Constantinople area were shorter and darker.. and man these Vikings must have been really strikingly impressiv muscular bunch of armored guys. did really make heads turn when you get a few dozen of these rugged-looking for guards..Comming from the North, Kiev the Rus and Scandinavian lands brought in some great diversity around Metro Constantinople region. I think it was a city of almost 2 million

@DMB Y Rus vikings attacked in 860, looted the suburbs of the city (outside the Theodosian Walls) and then turned back. The vikings had no way of getting through the city defenses...they never looted the city itself!

Fun Fact: If you have viking blood you can still feel the Gods presence, lurking in the shadows. Gods like Horus, Horagalles, Thor and Indra are all one and the same, sons of the Father (in Christianity) or Odin. Pagan gods , like Zeus or Je Sus in Christianity was the beginning of an era of monotheism. If you have viking blood or Longobardi blood you are probably drawn to the Christian religion in one way or the other. What you feel is the forces of Thor and Odin. The Sea Serpent or Midgard serpent is the same as you find in some Abrahamic religions, like the serpent in the garden of Eden. And the Sumerian Ningishzida and the horned serpent in native American culture are all the same as the Midgard monster.
