Vikings: Great Heathen Army - Battle of Ashdown 871 DOCUMENTARY

  • The Viking Age was relatively short, but it has left its distinctive mark on the history. The warriors, raiders, pirates, seafarers, and traders from Scandinavia influenced the fate of more regions than any other culture before the Age of Discovery, and no other land more so than the British Isles. In this series, we will talk about the Viking invasions of Britain and we are going to start with the invasion of the Great Heathen Army. The first half of this invasion was concluded at the battle of Ashdown between the forces of the Vikings and Wessex in 871. It was the first battle during which one of the first great kings of England - Alfred the Great proved his mettle.

      Hear ye hear ye: look for the name "Peter Madsen". If you EVER get a chance to browse that Danish cartoonists' work, seize the opportunity! He wrote/drew a long series of high-quality comics where he retold the Norse legends of the gods in a... mostly.... "even kids can read this" format. But he included topics like the pre-HBO origin myth of Ragnar the Leatherpants/ Shaggypants/ the Dragonslayer/ Lothbrok.
      Signed: someone who's not even Danish, just a bloke who got to read his first 5 books as a kid and still feels grateful for it

      There's a ton of interesting things that happend back then.
      And t he vikings where operating far and wide.
      Italy, Byzantine, Ireland (Dublin was founded by vikings), the Netherlands, the western islands of Scotland, Russia (some of those states where founded by Vikings), Greenland and Iceland.
      Heck, the vikings even crossed the sea over to Newfoundland in Canada (and they *may* have gone as far south as the US, although no evidence of them actually doing so has ever been found)

      Really?
      Sure that it wasn't just a local boat of some kind?
      Something that the native americans built?
      I mean, sure I wouldn't be surprised by a found in Maryland or even as far south as New York-New Jersey...
      But honestly Luisiana?
      That's quite far back then...
      They'd have to sail all the way around Florida to get there...
      And there's no records in the sagas of the Vikings encountering that kind of climate on their journeys to "Vinland"

      Hard to describe in short. Basically it's a war and politically orientated fantasy alternate history. I have to use the word fantasy because of its much different nature than what we know, but I'm keeping it realistic so its better relatable. And every video you guys make, every remake of a battle is potentially a foundation which I can build a story on, and for that I'm eternally grateful to you guys :)

    10:13 I don't know why, but I find it funny that the dude had to pray first before advancing.
    Aethelred: Now before we engage in battle I must pray to the Lord that we shall gain victory...
    *Alfred moves his troops to engage the enemy.*
    Soldier: My lord, our allies are engaging the enemy we must support-
    Aethelred: Shh. Can't you see I'm praying here?
    .....
    Soldier: My lord, our allies need help now!
    Aethelred: Shh. I'm not done yet.
    Soldier: But sir-
    Aethelred: Shh.
    .....
    Aethelred: Alright I'm done. :3 Let's move out!
    *one epic fight scene later*
    Aethelred: See? I'd told you we would win! All we needed is some faith. Praise be to God we are victorious!
    Alfred: You left us hanging.
    Aethelred: I know.

    • @GhostRider659
      @GhostRider659 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It turned out alright though didn't it? By holding back at first, Aethelred was able to strike a decisive blow that won the battle. The Danes got baited in and got hit for it. Not to say it wasn't risky, but taking the Danes on head on would have also been risky.

    • @paulmentzer7658
      @paulmentzer7658 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sounds like a plan, like when Ceasar reviewed Checken entails and said the entails were unfavorable. People were superstition and the entails were a way Ceasar convinced his men it was a bad day to attack, when Ceasar's men wanted to attack.
      By the time of Alfred and his brother, praying had long replaced the ancient Roman reading of entails. Thus it was easier to tell his men to wait till the end of the prays before attacking. The prays would also be done by the soldiers waiting, gave them something to do while waiting.
      The result of the delay is seen in the result of the battle. Alfred had engaged the Vikings, while his brother's force was hidden by fog. Thus the Vikings took Alfred's force as the whole English Army and engaged Alfred's force in front and on Alfred's left flank.
      This would have taken time to take place, when the Vikings were totally engaged the praying army hit them in their rear, crushing them.
      This was a well throught out plan. Engage the entire Viking Army with half of the English army, then once the Viking army was engaged, hit the Viking Army in their rear with fresh troops.
      The problem was how do you keep the Army back, when that army knows their fellow soldiers are fighting for their lives? Ceasar used entails, Alfred and his Brother used prays.
      Remember the English army of this time period is primary Infantry whose main occupation was farming. These were part time soldiers, militia, through well trained. But being militia want to fight not wait for the opportunity to strike. Ceasar had the same problem, and his army were trained professional soldiers not Militia backed up by a handful of professional soldiers.
      The pray appears to be a way to keep the unit together till it was time to strike. If Alfred objected to it, he would have sent riders to demand a charge by his brother. No, this was a plan to use the fog and ground cover to destroy the Viking Army. Alfred would engage the Vikings and wait for the Viking to hit his left flank, knowing once that was done, his brother would hit the Vikings in the Viking's rear. The result would be the total destruction of the Viking' army. The problem how do keep the men of the Second Army from attacking till it is time? Alfred and his brother knew when dealing with Miltia, you must understand their limits, one of which is refusing to obey orders when each militiaman wanting to fight. Thus the pray to keep the troops occupied well waiting for the Vikings to make a mistake and giving the Vikings a perfect mistake to do.

      Yes. There were already inaccuracies in the first 4 seasons, but in the following seasons they were already well above the limit of acceptability... Hot air balloon and flight in season 6! Hot air balloon at the end of the "Dark Ages" (aka early Middle Ages)?!?! The first hot air balloon rose without a man in 1709, and with a man in 1783! Pathetic.

    Who shall sing me,
    Into deathsleep sling me,
    When I on the path to Hel go,
    And this track I tread
    Is cold, so cold, so cold.
    I sought the songs,
    I sent the songs.
    Then the deepest well
    Gave me tears so harsh
    From the Slain-father's1 pledge.
    I know everything, Odin,
    To whom you gave your eye.
    Who shall sing me,
    Into deathsleep sling me,
    Whence I on the path to Hel go,
    And this track I tread
    Is cold, so cold, so cold.
    Early or in the day's end,
    The raven still knows if I fall.
    Once you stand at the gate to Hel
    And when you have to tear free,
    I shall follow you
    Over Gjallarbrú2 with my song.
    You will be free from the bonds that bind you,
    You are free from the bonds that bound you!
    "Cattle die,
    Friends die,
    So, too, must you die.
    Though one thing
    Never dies;
    The fair fame one has earned.
    Cattle die,

    Judgement of a dead man's life."

      It was never exactly accurate history to begin with. Ragnar was shown in both Lindisfarne and Paris! He couldn't have lived long enough to do both by his 60s. The route to the West was also known before Ragnar supposedly 'discovered' it as they showed it in the tv show.

    • @Rimasta1

    • @00Trademark00
      @00Trademark00 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Nothing in that show is historically accurate, their clothing and armour (both of the Danes and of the Christians) is absolutely horrible and nothing else than 2010s "medieval TV" fashion, the way the battles are depicted is just silly (as it is in almost all movies - battles are depicted as massed duels). The way people act in the show is not just ahistorical but often doesn't even make too much sense. Then there are the hundreds of "shield-maidens" (there could have been some, perhaps, but their number in the show is just ridiculous, also they show at least have them portrayed by actresses who look like they could be warriors rather than 50kg girls). It is quite a fun series (albeit just before Ragnar's death I found the overall quality much worse, the writing and acting has deteriorated a lot) but it should be seen as fantasy set in a quasi-historical world.

      God bless bullshit. What makes your god any better or real than any other god. Gods were created by humans to calm them,and give them order out of the chaos that is life. There are no gods, or god. Jesus was the first hippie, who questioned the power of Rome,and he was a jew. To shut his mouth, so the peasants would "know their place" the Romans killed him. I am sure he was a charismatic, well meaning ,and good man. Alfred did not crush the Vikings. The Vikings did what they had alweays meant to do, and that was to give their starving people soil and land to farm and then assimilate into the population. They even converted to christianity to make that possible so no more blood was shed. Make no mistake about it. The Anglo Saxons had just as much blood on their hands as did the Norse,Danes or Swedish . There is a reason they were called the Dark Ages.

      Empatheia Multiversalis Common misconception, Anglo saxons were actually a mix between Germanic and Britons, most of them were britonic genetically, but culturally more germanic.

      Syed,
      Germanic descent comes in later, as the Roman Empire is falling. Broadly speaking of course. It occurs in the 4th and 5th Centuries as Germanic peoples migrate West, South etc and establish kingdoms. Byzantium is a strange case, as it embodies both Roman and Greek influence, but also Eastern Influence as well due to it's location. I would say it is indeed part of Western civilisation, but heavily influenced by Middle Eastern culture, Kingdoms etc.

      @GeoBBB123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Really? I think Byzantium influenced the Middle East as much, perhaps more, than it was influenced in turn. Certainly early on.

    • @CaptainSpadge136
      @CaptainSpadge136 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it's hard to ascertain who influenced who the most as regards history. But it is certainly true that Byzantium did influence the geographical region of the Middle East. When an empire exists for that amount of time it cannot fail to do such. However, when an empire exists for such a long period of time, it is under constant pressure and influence from other developing and rising powers in the area e.g. Sassanids, then the following Muslim empires. One thing that is vitally important to the influence and knowledge of empires was the Library of Alexandria, lost to the Byzantines due to the Muslim conquests. This was one reason that Medicine in the Islamic empires was far more advanced than that of Latin Christian nations for centuries. Thus, the crusades were much more vital in the development of the Western Nations than a mere conquest of Holy Land because they brought back with them numerous technological advancements, such as weapons for siege warfare. Sorry for going off on a tangent

      David Brelu-Brelu Both history channels cover Scandinavia extensively because it is a region with allot of interesting events that changed much of the history in Northern Europe and it is a region which does not have much coverage in history channels which makes it a good place to cover as many people are familiar with Vikings.

      This is the only drawback I have with these channels. They tend to overlap a lot. The reason is because they want to put out the most popular ideas, but that means they end up with the same series.
